Raratouille was a great reminder of what an animated film could be. Brought me back to the days of Alladin and Beauty & The Beast.
I've read the alternate ending to Robin Hood. I don't have the DVD, so tell me is the alternate ending on the DVD animated, story boarded, or only mentioned by a Disney employee?

storyboard ,but I believe it had the characters saying the alternate lines from the ending

I find it very hard to beleive that nobody else has mentioned this already. And yes, I kno it's aired already, but not here in Britain. -
Man I remember watching all those good fun classics from the 80s and early 90s-
Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers <3
Duck Tales <3
Darkwing Duck <3
Gummi Bears <3
Tale Spin <3 (Fuck the haters)
…and Gargoyles which is becoming a fav. of mineI give them credit to also improving my english.
-
And a foruth season of Kim Possible huh? I BET YOU they wont be a couple in it, that just wouldn't work.
Wish i had been on the other side of that bet.

Oh, and those cheap cash-in sequels and spin offs DTVs are officially over. Expect to see no more ever again, except for a few that are already pretty mcuh finished.
I read about this on News Channel (on the Wii)! Even though these quick straight-to-DVD sequels are the only 2D movies Disney ever makes anymore, I'm glad they're dead now. I kinda always thought these cheap sequels betrayed the artistic vision of the much older films, which were actually much better animated and didn't go crazy with CG effects.
-
Crazy withy cgi effects… That reminds me of that rock giant from Quest for Camelot (not a disnety film btw). Egad, talk about a poor bledning of cgi on 2D animation.
Tommy Swoes, your Skeeter avatar scares me.

I'm sorry. It's not supposed to be scary, it's supposed to be funny.

anyone heard of the film The Black Cauldron? I saw this on TV months ago and never saw a VHS or a DVD of this movie out in stores and it is a Disney film
-
I remember that movie. I saw in third grade. The main villan was some skeleton guy right?
I heard it did poorly* and was too violent.

yeah the Horned king.
TOO Violent? thats why it never went to DVD?
I thought the movie had the same amount of violence as some of the other old disney films. -

This classic was mentioned way to late. Though most of the characters in "The Black Cauldron" simply suck (the pig, the hero, the doggy thing), the Horned King is one of the most terrifying villains ever seen in an animated movie (and there WERE bad-ass villains in the old Disney movies, like Chernabog from "Fantasia"!).
Other favorites of mine are "Sword in the Stone" (I'm not sure if the name's correct, I speak of the hilarious funny movie with Merlin, his speaking owl Archimedes and the witch Mim) and the great "Hunchback of Notre Dame", one of the less animated movies where the musical sequences are not disturbing.
Yes, I even dislike the songs from "The Lion King".
-
When I was a kid I really liked the books that the Black Cauldron was based on.
I have a bootleg VHS copy somewhere (that I got at a comic convention a long time ago). I think even the bootleg was edited though.
Official DVD and VHS releases came out in the late 1990s/early 2000s, but they were edited versions.

really? I thought the "Hellfire"sequence with Frollo and those hooded creatures were scary

Yeah, and that's why that song rocks so much. And even the german translations of all the songs kick totally ass, and generally, I'm totally against translations of songs.

The Black Cauldron was epic failure on a lot of levels…it's not horrible but incredibly forgettable. I saw in theaters and remembered nothing after I saw it. I finally saw it again a couple of years ago...and still don't really remember much... I hear the original book is really good though.

The book series (there were a lot - I think the Black Cauldron was like the second one, but the movie combined the first two or something) were the only books I would take the time to read when I was a kid.
Not sure how they would hold up today though, but for a kid like myself they were awesome.

Copied from wikipedia
Shortly before the film's release to theaters, newly appointed Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg ordered several scenes from The Black Cauldron be cut, due to the fear that the graphic nature of them would alienate children and family audiences. The bulk of the cut scenes involved the undead "Cauldron Born", who are used as the Horned King's army in the final act of the film. While most of the scenes were seamlessly removed from the film, one particular cut involving a Cauldron Born killing a person by slicing his neck and torso created a rather recognizable lapse due to the fact that the removal of the scene creates a jump in the film's soundtrack. Additionally, a scene involving Taran taking the magic sword and slaying his foes while he escapes the Horned King's castle for the first time was removed, as well as another scene with Princess Eilonwy partially nude as fabric was ripped off of her dress as she is hanging by her hands with Taran and Fflewddur Fflam. Another scene cut featured a man being dissolved by mist.[1] The removal of these scenes was to prevent the film from receiving either a PG-13 or R rating, in which Disney doesn't approve. The final version of the film was the first animated film from Disney to get a PG rating from the MPAA.

Well, if Wikipedia is correct:
Shortly before the film's release to theaters, newly appointed Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg ordered several scenes from The Black Cauldron be cut, due to the fear that the graphic nature of them would alienate children and family audiences. The bulk of the cut scenes involved the undead "Cauldron Born", who are used as the Horned King's army in the final act of the film.

As of this day, the original cut of the film with the removed scenes restored has never been released on video or DVD. A version of the film with more cuts has appeared on the Disney Channel and the Toon Disney channel.
EDIT: Oops, I was too late.

I saw The BC. It really is an epic failure. It's not that it's a particularly bad film. It's just that it's so bland and uninspired, and then you compare it to any other Disney animated film before it…. It lacks any charm.
I can't believe that before the point where I first saw that film, I had been waiting years to see it.
-
and the great "Hunchback of Notre Dame", one of the less animated movies where the musical sequences are not disturbing.
Finally some Hunchback love!
The film wasn't perfect, but it's one of my favorite Disney films (and films in general) EVER!!!! Frollo is the perfect villain, a complete evil freak, and yet he's also somewhat relatable and beleivable. Maybe it's a tad dark for a kids' movie, but it really walks that fine line quite well.

What about Anastasia…
That was a good movie. With a good villian. "Rasputen". Why does everyone forget this one?

it wasnt a disney film from what I recall.
I think it was made from the same co. that made Thumbelina,Ferngully, and American tailanother old favorite disney movie of mine was who framed roger rabbit?
Classic film -
Anatasia was produced by Fox.
I just remembered this one dream I had a year ago where I was suing Mickey Mouse in court over the rights to Bambi.
-
Anastasia was directed by Don Bluth, who used to be part of Disney in the late 70's. Other Bluth films are Land Before Time (the original), American Tail, Titan AE, The Secret of NIMH, and All Dogs Go To Heaven.

You forgot Rock-a-doodle Cosmic. I don't know why much people didn't like this one. It was always my favorite when I was little.
Uncle Dukie was the coolest villain ever.

Brer rabbit is by Disney right?
I found a brer rabbit DVD today.. by universal pictures -
Br'er Rabbit is an old African American folktale. There was a Disney movie that came out in 1946 called "Song of the South" that adapted the folktales to animation along with a live action movie, but the movie hasn't been available for purchase for a quite a long time due to controversy over perceived racism.
Anyway, the Universal Pictures release you bought obviously isn't Disney. Br'er Rabbit isn't any more Disney than Peter Pan or Snow White is, they're old folktales/fairytales that Disney just happened to adapt, but they aren't the only ones to do it.

I never bought it. I only saw it in the bookstore today. I been assuming for so long Brer rabbit was a disney character from long ago that i never knew it was a folktale

Song of the South, Alladin, Lion King….
Is it me or has Disney been accused of racism quite a few times?
And for those who don"t know the lo down, some consider the original lyrics to the opening song in Alladin (theyll cut off your ? if they dont like your face) to be racist towards Arabians and some consider Scar to be racist towards black people because he was the only dark skinned lion in the Lion King
-
It's ear.
I thought people were more pissed off at the dust spelling out SEX than anything about race in Lion King.
-
It actually spells SFX

I can't beleive the Pocahontas controvery wasn't mentioned.
Not only were some Native Americans offended for the movie using typical western portrayals of their people, but a bunch of people were angry about Pocahontas' design because they thought she wasn't modeled after a real Native American woman, when in fact she was. (not to mentioned voiced by one, for the talking parts anyway)
And even now, 2 whole years before the Princess and the Frog even comes out, Disney is already doing all they can to keep those pc losers happy. They've already changed the main character's name from Maddy (apparently it's too close to "mammy") to Tiana (which is a really bland crappy name if you ask me, I much preffered Maddy)
And it's getting flak for where it's set because of the Jim Crow laws going on during the 20s in the south.
And then people were upset because the name "Prince Harry" seemed to imply he was white, which made alot of people upset for some reason. So now his name has been changed to Prince Naveen, and it's been specified he's from Maldakesh.
People really look waaaaaaaaaay too much into these movies.
Disney has alot riding on this film, but they can't keep everyone happy all the damn time. What they should focus on is not keeping those complainers happy, but rather make sure that the movie is the best it can be.
-

The funniest part is the title change from "The Frog Princess" (the title of the original story) because people actually thought the Princess was being called a "frog", a slur used for the French.

Interracial relationships, especially between blacks and whites, seems to be a sort of taboo in Hollywood, even though its slowly on the rise.
-
Surprised no one mentioned the hidden penis on the original video cover of the Little Mermaid. That was probably the worst thing Disney did.
Did I mention that Monsters Inc. is one of my top favorite Disney films? A interesting plot, lots of creativitiy, a well thought out world, good exposition too. I love the scene where Mike tells Scully to rescue Boo on his own. It changed Mike from sidekick to co-star, a good call on Pixar's part. That, and I love Billy Crystal.
-
Hah, gotta love some good old-fashioned bullshit.

Oh geez, what the hell is wrong with "Maddy"!?
I agree that Disney should keep on their toes about being accused of racism (any studio should), but there is such a thing as "historical accuracy."
Not to mention this movie is based off a RUSSIAN folktale that is actually titled "The Frog Princess." It's not some girl version of The Frog Prince.

I've sort of been on a nostalgia streak this week. So, I found a torrent with some Disney movies and was watching them all week. I saw The Black Cauldron for the first time as well. It wasn't as bad as everyone else here said it was, but it did have a bit of a "meh" feeling to it. I have to say though, Gurgi was the most annoying character. But, that's mostly because I couldn't stand his voice. Seriously, he sounds like Donald Duck and Meatwad's love-child. Not worth re-watching, but it did have its moments.
Yeah, I thought I'd get that out of the way. And I noticed a few WTF moments in the classics that probably wouldn't cut it nowadays. Yes, I know everyone here knows of the Little Mermaid castle penis, or the "SEX" in The Lion King (Or is it SFX? We may never know.). There are some scenes and such that I missed when watching them as a kid. In Pinocchio, I almost laughed my ass off at Jiminy spotting a puppet pantie-shot. I don't know how I missed that before, or if I took it the wrong way, but it looked hilarious to me.

Looks liek some of the Disney DVDs are going back to the vault, which i have no idea how long it will be before they are out

rereading this
I like how Tiana sounds more stereotyopical than Maddy
