Great series I really enjoy it. and I can't wait for more chapters to come out.
Fairy Tail

-
I can't belive its already around a year that this manga has been going on for, i remember it was this forum that wanted me to check this manga out and its just amazing
-
Hmmm…could this be it? Could this be the manga that will me look forward to every week like OP can?
"Make me feel it! Make me feel alive again!"
No seriously, no bullshit, how is it? 50 chapters isn't much to go on but it's enough. Is this a comic with heart, attention to detail and sweet sweet battles?
Because everything else I try just zeroes out.
-
It's a bit cliche (main characters powers are Fire, Ice, Armor/Swords and Summons)
So far theres been 3 major fighting arcs with little breaks in between them.
The dark guild arc started when one of the "big 4", Erza (Sword lady) recruits Natsu (Fire guy, main character) and Gray (Ice guy) to fight off Eisenwald guild. The bad guys have pretty cliche powers, Wind, Shadow, but some of them were pretty cool.
Next arc was the one that seemed to set the manga apart, having not truly main characters fight main villains of the arc. Develops Gray in a big way.
The current arc is promising to be so awesome, with hopefully developing the large Fairy Tail guild casts powers. Right now its just a big brawl and looks like it will be a rescue the damsel arc possible though.
-
you're forgetting Lucy, she has key summuns(creatures) called stellar spirits, and fanservice of course
-
give it a try at least
its not OP level but it could be one of the top 5 mangas in a year or two
waaay better than Naruto imo

Does it show potential to be? OP is OP because Oda is Oda. OP is the manga made for fans by a fan.
It's so good and Oda is so dedicated to working with his fans that everything else I'm told to read just ends up paling in comparison in one way or another be it JUMP series or monthly series, what have you. I really feel like getting into Fairy Tale because the tanks just have this warm ethereal quality to 'em that beckons me, but if it's a dry series without at least showing the signs of potential for depth (ie. OP we already had a growing crew, Devil Fruits to wonder about, the mystery of GL, sidestories for past characters, heavy-duty drama, etc.) then I don't wanna dedicate myself to it. Not asking for plot details, just whether it shows these qualities or not.
-
Chapter 27… doesn't look familiar for any of you guys? With a frozen demon from the Nothern Continent and a goth-lolita and a guy with a lion face?
...
It's a good series, otherwise. I can't wait to see what the Smoker look-alike Luxus' power is. Hopefully something to do with Lightning.

I'm not trying to bash the series or anything of that kind, but..
Just saying, Greg, don't get your hopes too high. Because, to me [and apparently only me =(] it certainly isn't getting high as much as many people I met claim it to be, not only in this board. I could say it's an average shonen, which makes it bad. When I got to the feel it's overrated it made it even worse in my eyes, but that's not fair to the series, is it.Bleh, it doesn't make me feel good posting this.. at least now I know that if Greg likes it I must be messed up in my brain, because his reasoning with OP is just like mine.

No real depth. They're hinting at some Mage Council having some huge importance later on, but that's it. Each of the stories before that are all self contained, wrapping up at the end of their respective arcs. It only started though.
Anything else I can tell you is worthless. Whether you like the characters, can tolerate the fanservice, and enjoy the pacing/panelling of the fights and events is up to you…
-
Hmmm, okay. I'll give it another 40-50 chapters (ie. another year) until I come back and see if it's kicked in. I'm a firm believer that judgement on a series (unless it's just pure shit) shouldn't be passed until around 9-10 volumes because that's usually the point where the author knows their series has staying power (unless they want to wrap it up early) and can tell the story they originally wanted to tell.

the thing is it was before revelation of Oz, Perona and Absalom

@Fire Fist:
That's my whole point…
Huh?
Are you saying Mashima somehow copied something of another mangaka's work before it was even drawn? Or the other way around? Cause I'm sorta confused by the point you were trying to make, Ace.
I do have one problem with the series though where it's clearly obvious that Gray will either be fighting and/or falling in love with Urtear mainly cause of her family association with Ur, just like in his previous series with those two characters who could control silver (forgot their names). Sorta the same with the love-triangle I see in the future between Natsu, Lucy, and Erza….. unless he's learned his lesson from Rave (where he introduced a love-plot near the end of the series and tried to play it off as a big surprise even though it was so so so obvious from the very beginning).
One of the main reasons I love the series that I do (One Piece) is because there's no crappy love-plot. Hunter x Hunter, the same reason. Although good love stories are welcomed, Shounen mangas just can't seem to get it right except for DBZ and YYH.
-
But we had Love Stories in One Piece, between Usopp and Merry….
-
ED@Kaimei-Karasuhebi:
But we had Love Stories in One Piece, between Usopp and Merry….
Well that's the story of a boy and his boat, the only thing that can top that kind of love is one between a boy and his dog.
And even that was done better than 97% of all Shounen (the 3 percent excluded being DBZ, YYH, and Shaman King which I forgot earlier)
EDIT: I guess you can include School Rumble too, even though I was talking about Shounens that are more action-based.
-
The only thing I look forward in Fairy Tail is the whereabouts of the Dragon….
Ironic, is not it?...
-
the series is still very new..its too early to judge it.
sadly many kids tend to rush and judge stories way early. I'm getting sick of the net. : D~
personally, I LOVE it so far~~<3 -
Fairy Tail does kinda reek of generic, but it's executed in a way that keeps it really entertaining and captivating.
Decent artwork doesn't hurt.
-
Just read the first chapter of the story. Liked it so far. Don't see why everyone says its a One Piece rip off….
For once the main character is at a high level of power. I mean, from what ive seen so far.
Can someone tell me if the series' main focus is on magic, or does it put some emphasis on other material?
I dont want to spoil myself by reading the whole thread. I already spoiled myself by finding out that
! The fairly tail guild or whatever burns down.
-

sadly many kids tend to rush and judge stories way early. I'm getting sick of the net. : D~Ditto. Like Greg, I prefer to wait until a good 100 chapters or so have been released before I make a solid opinion. A number of series I like started off slow (One Piece, Buso Renkin and Rave for example), while others started off good but after an arc or so started to get a bit shaky and been both good and bad in places (Naruto for example). However, so far I'm loving this series and looking forward to the English release next year.
-
I'm really looking forward to the English release, the tankobon covers are so good looking, but I really didn't want to import them, meaning it'll be considerably easier to get hold of them.
Also, needs more Erza and old guy.
-
I need to catch up on this series, but I DLed the latest raw. I'll be pissed if Makarov is down for the rest of this struggle, because goddamn he was blind sided by some crying goon.
-
Ooooh now it finally gets interesting! There's more Dragon Slayers or whatever they are called? That's kinda cool in a boring kinda way.
-

It's similar to One Piece in artwork, to a point, and also because the main lead is very Luffy-like in personality. Namely, he's brash, friendly, not too bright, and prefers to solve things with his fists over words. There are plenty of parallels you could make between Fairy Tail and OP.
Yes, the main focus is magic. Everyone has varying levels of martial arts ability, but the majority of power in the series lies in magic. Thankfully there are lots of different types of magic so it doesn't grow stale quickly.
-
wow I actually read everything (up too what is scanlated)
and i actually like it although i must this really reminds me of a toned down version of op
-
It does remind me of One Piece, but in a good way. I mean, Natsu and Lucy remind Luffy and Nami a lot, artwork is similar and the general feel of the story is alike, with lots of adventure and companionship.
I don't read much manga besides OP, but when I picked up Fairy Tail I immediately read all the scanlated chapters and became anxious about when the next one is out. As if I didn't have enough addictions already.
[edit]
I think what nailed it for me was the dialogue in the Omake issue 22, when Lucy says the guys came along since they wanted to see her in her swimsuit and then they go:
Natsu: Whoa! Look at this bug!
Gray: Don't eat it!
Natsu: I'd never!Totally ignoring her. Great stuff.
-
^ When I translate, I often put Luffy instead of Natsu, Nami instead of Lucy xD; And when I translate OP, I do the other way around… -__-;;

Chapter 50s out
! thank god it turned out that it's not a rescue the damsel in distress arc. She kicked Jose in the balls and escaped lol. Now Jose's pissed. Also, it looks like Lucy's father is important somehow, but I can't read japanese. It looks like we might get a Jose vs Natsu somewhat early. I think this arc will turn into what last arc was for Gray but with Lucy. It's good that Mashima is investing time into developing his characters before getting into the real story.
-
I saw chapter 49 and it was awesome i like Elfman's powers
-
The spread in 48 with "WE ARE FAIRY TAIL!" was extremely awesome.
If Makarov is out for the count (I doubt it), hopefully we'll get to see one of the three super duper magi show their stuff.
-
I just tought something crazy…
What if Gazille is Natsu's Big Brother? I doubt the Dragon Slaying magic is the responsable for making their faces alike. :P
And anyways, Gazille vs Erza would be great, but I feel that somehow that would end in a fanservice stuff with Erza's armors being chomped away by Gazille.
Is the chapter already translated? I don't feel like downloading raws.
PS: Natsu and Lucy reminds me more of Goku and Bulma. I can't see how can you compare her to Nami besides being related to some freakin monster. I mean, Lucy's more of a "Naive Girl who gets in problems" than a "bitch who knows how to deal with the situation". I'm not saying she's stupid, but it's obvious that she's the kind of character that we could relate as we learn more of the fairy tail world.

I colored a page from 47, I love this manga so far.
-
I started catching up tonight, and I'm at the start of the Garuna Island arc. Very fun series.
So far, other than Makarov, Grey is my favorite character. Not quite sure, I kind of like his ice abilities, and he has a good personality as well. I don't care much for WACKY STRIPPING ANTICS, but it's much better than HAY GUYS I'M FIRE LUFFY I'M GONNA GO BE RECKLESS.
'Course, if Elfman gets to do shit he might outrank Grey.
I also looked at the latest raw.
! Lucy nailing Joe in the nuts cracked me up. Also, her dad looks pretty awesome. I hope we see him soon.
! Jose's expressions are awesome. If it weren't for the damn lipstick I'd like him.
! I wonder what kind of backup will come for Natsu, can't he take care of those 5 by himself… I hope we see much more of Elfman, I have a feeling we will since his powers were just explained. -
I like Erza (tied with Makarov), the armor magic is really cool, and her goofy seriousness is pretty entertaining. There are a ton of side magi I want to see more of because of the little profiles at the beginning of a bunch of chapters, especially the giant round guy who draws pictures on himself. What an awesomely dumb ability.
Hey Cap'n Carter thanks for stealing my avatar idea you big poof
-
Chapter 50 was a great segway chapter, hopefully chapter 51 will be just as good. (but hopefully better. ;D))
-
@Mr.:
Hey Cap'n Carter thanks for stealing my avatar idea you big poof
Payback time.
HAR! FUCK YOU! GET ME A COFFEE!
edit: ok, caught up now. Yeah Grey's cool.
I'm really digging Aria's design. The only of the Element 4 I care for right now.
-
It's on now, we's a feuding.
As for the Elemental guys, I like the weird bendy earth guy. I forget his name.
-
Aria of the Sky, Sol of the Earth, Jubia of the Rain. Is Gazile a part of the Elemental 4, or have we yet to see Of The Fire?
-
I'm fairly sure he's one of the four, event though his intro-box didn't mention it.
EDIT: actually, when Erza mentions the Element 4, the 4th silhouette doesn't resemble Gazille at all. It looks like a small swordsman with a typical samurai ponytail.
Right after mentioning the Element 4, Erza goes right into saying "But they say the most formidable one of them is Iron Dragon Gazille," so it's a little bit misleading. So he's the most notorious one in the guild and not one of the four. So he's pretty much the Phantom Lord Natsu in every way.
-
That's good. So we have another Elemental 4 to be revealed, and he's most likely Fire.
Best part about this arc is the fight matchups are so unpredictable. Natsu definitely won't take out Gazile AND Jose.
I'm hoping Lucy pulls a Gray and defeats Jose.
-
Well, unless I'm mistaken she dropped her keys back in town when she was captured. So she's kind of naked (not literally, though that happens every 3 chapters).
It looks like the others went to regroup, but I hope Makarov recovers quickly and kicks some ass, and we get to see Elfman actually DO stuff.
Or better yet, we see some more of the Four S-Ranks.
-
-
No.
same as it ever was
-
Seems like he's naming the Elemental 4 with Latin/Spanish/Portuguese/Italian names.
-
I like Jubia, personally. I dunno, I think I just have a thing for "poetic" characters.
-
I really would like to see the S-class mages to come and save the day.
-
I thought Jubia was Lluvia?
-
