The main reason Skypeia was good for me is because it was the most pirate-like adventure they had. I mean cmon, running around unexplored places getting chased by natives, what's more pirate than that.
Has Oda lost his touch?

Arabasta ? --; am I the only one that find it very long and kind of boring? with vivi always whining about her country. I think Skypia is simply brilliant and I enjoy it so much.. Enel was awesome too! <3
I love this manga very much however, I have to admit there are many things that changed and I am not very happy with it… like Nami fanservice =_____='' I prefer the old simple/cute Nami. along with many other thanks that bugs me.I feel the exact same way^^ Except for the Nami part. Boobs are great!. The more boobs the better!!!

The Alabasta arc was the most boring for me as well =\ Enies Lobby or Thriller Bark are much better.
-
I have no right to judge about Oda's storytelling skill. All I can say is I'm losing interest in this series after EL arc has ended. [Out of topic]But the forum is still interesting, so I still come back to check out the discussions.
@Fire Fist:
You've obviously never read Shaman King or Tenchi Muyo if you think only men can be badass in fights.
I agree with you partially. You have to read some other series to understand why some of the members here complain about Nami, or even Robin.
I know naughts about Tenchi Muyo, but I hardly see any females fighting in Shaman King as well.
-
Skypeida was awsome, and it was nice a fresh, I haven't seen anything similar to that before.
-
Fate/stay night, while not a manga, had some awesome female ownage.
Skypeia was good, but not as good as Arabasta or W7/EL for me. I do not it was pointless or a drawn out filler though.
Luffy's Fist + Bellamy's Face = Awesome.
And the Montblanc Norland flashback was among the best in the series IMO, right behind Chopper's and Robin's.
-
The peaks Enies Lobby ,at least for me it is.
-
Personally, the only arc that I've never liked was Davy Back Fight. The only things good about it in my opinion were Afro Luffy and Aokiji. Except for Porche and Monda, I hated all the characters.
While I liked Skypeia, I felt that the flashback was too long and the priests were underused. However, Enel was a great villain, and the entire environment was very well developed. I didn't like Jaya all that much, though, mostly because I hated the monkeys and Cricket. Also, I thought that Bellamy's Devil Fruit was a bit boring compared to some of the others. It just felt like a Gomu Gomu no Mi that was much, much less useful.

My opinion on the three main arcs so far:
Best fights arc: Enies Lobby
Best story arc: Skypiea
Best "overall": ArabastaWorst fights arc: Skypiea
Worst story arc: Arabasta
Worst "overall": Skypiea"Worst" doesnt mean really bad, just relatively not as good.
I loved Skypiea's stories, but I have to admit that pretty much all the fights were crap. Zoro didn't clash swords with anyone, Sanji got one team fight which was pretty boring, maybe only Chopper's had any value.
Overall, Skypiea was good but not as good as the other arcs, despite its good plotline.
Arabasta's story was ok, but compared to the others it was cheesy and cliche'd. You have some princess and some bomb thats gonna go off it's just all, ugh, seen-it-all-before. It was done well though, so Arabasta gets the best "overall" effect.
Arabasta had some nice team fights, but Enies Lobby had the best fights for me. Franky's was probably the most awesome, Luffy similarly. My jaw gaped wide open seeing Zoro's twist, and the balance between comedy and combat is done really well.

The Japanese are still pretty sexist. The only artist I've seen who's really pushed for equality in terms of fights is Hirohiko Araki (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.) Part 6 is almost nothing but girl on girl action, except it's every bit as insanely bloody as the much more male-focused chapters.

In Tenchi Muyo, Washu and Ryoko are the most powerful characters. In fact, pretty much any of the characters are more powerful than Tenchi except Mihoshi (who's human), which is why the series translates to "Useless Tenchi".
As for Shaman King, I know Anna doesn't get many fights in it, but in the fights she does fight, she usually destroys the opponent.
There are other series that have women that are badasses. Claymore is one off the top of my head, and Yaone and Lirin from Gensomaden Saiyuki are pretty powerful fighters.
That aside, part of it is Japan's attitude on women, and the other is the need for Oda to follow the "Damsel in Distress" motif that One Piece has been following since the beginning. Oda wanted this to be an Adventure Romance novel, and it is, to an R. When I first started reading One Piece, I rewatched my old Robotech and Captain Harlock anime, and did a double take.
-
Actually nobody in Tenchi Muyo is more powerful than Kami Tenchi. He is omnipotent period. He is the one being who is above the three goddesses.
As far as Skypiea is concerned, it was a very entertaining arc. Certainly nothing like filler. Not to mention it had one of the greatest antagonists in the history of manga with Eneru.

Don't think the staff hasn't noticed and debated that issue to death. Our end conclusion was, it's Arabasta, the most commonly used spelling in the manga. We can't put unsaid words in Oda's mouth and argue Alabaster was right, and Alabasta was used once and clearly isn't the preferred term.
Offical translation in germany is Alabasta. And it was the first which was translated into western language. Whatever you discussed i take the l before the r.. makes more sense.
-
Well. I don't think Oda has lost his touch, even though the Thriller Bark ark is not so good for now, specially for Gekko Moria, which I think is a pathetic character
-
It's ridiculous to say 'HE LOST IT'….define lost and you see why. But he has really dried up after Alsabastard. Yet, Water 7 was pure gold. So it isn;t so much that it is gone, but that he is now trying to fit pieces together to make his vision of the story work and much of it is an ill fit. Most likely he sat down around issue 50 or before and mapped out how it was all working and how many issues it would take.
That's why Water 7 was so brilliant and well paced and then the darn Lobby was an elongated borefest.
I am personally not very enthused about the newest chapter of OP.

i thought enies lobby arc was great
Me too.
Reading Enies Lobby is like reading Kafka,I suppose. One type of people will love, the others will hate it,but surely no one can stay neutral towards it.
-
Enies Lobby was the greatest arc ever^^ Seriously, how can you not like such an action-packed arc like that?!?
-
I found the start of it kinda boring, what with everyone shuffling through all those government/marine peons, but it got alot better after Sogeking burned the World Goverment flag.

They kicked some serious government asses for them taking Robin away to die an excrusiatingly painfull death for the "unforgivable sin" of being alive-they got what they deserved and i enjoyed every bloody broken govt. bone and every frickin busted gov. jaw:devil:

Hmm I guess but Oda-Sensei made up for that with Luffy's battle against Blueno in the meantime. Not to mention Sodom and Gomorrah back stories. Totally didn't expect them to get that. Oh and I loved Luffy's move. The one where he controlled the movements of the marines and used them as human shields. What was it called again?

robot or something like that.
