oh man, my PS3 is just sitting there, in it's box, all shiny and new, looking at me…
at my soul.

I think the first thing that comes to mind is, real or fake?
probably should have included the article

I think the first thing that comes to mind is, real or fake?
That picture just screams "fake" to me.
Although I'm sure that some pissy-3rd-rate-perepherial maker will make your dream a reality in the future ;)
Hmmm, third party eh?
I'm interested in whether or not Hori will put in rumble.
The french PS3 launch:
http://www.jeux-france.com/news19695_la-playstation-3-sort-en-europe.html
Tranlated text: the event only attracted about 20 people at the Eiffel tower and "4 or 5" on the Champs Elysées.
ah ah ah, that's just as expected. i hope it will sell badly everywhere in europe and they'll correct the price in order to make it "abordable".
The ps2 and the xbox seemed to have more buzz than the ps3 and the xbox360.
I am not sure what to make of this. The ps2 is still outselling the xbox 360 and the ps3. They really need a price drop.
that mouse gimic thingy will fail. It is rare that some gimic like that catches on.
that mouse gimic thingy will fail. It is rare that some gimic like that catches on.
Well, it's a third party peripheral, it's not something from Sony. In that event I'm not even sure I'd want to use it just because of how glitchy it might be.
huh

That for the PS3 or PS2? This may give Playstation a bigger chance to make more stretegy games or overhead RPGs (X-men Legends). But that analog control is just plain ugly, it looks like the Wii's nunchuck and XBOX's large controller had a misshapen baby.

and bad-beat, i've read that in london sony gave an HDTV and brought you back home in taxi if you bought a ps3. what about it?
EDIT: oh, i simply hate microsoft's behaviour. funny how they act so childish when they're not in "monopole" state. hey, bill, leave us alone, people bought a wii, not your shitty xboxmyass.
ah, good point greg. Know what though, I was just thinking; my roomates complain, they would rather play games on the computer, cause they like the controls better. (mouse and keyboard) Maybe something like this, will coax people like them to buy a PS3?
Thanks for the link igalsfy, that was funny as hell.
Seriously, what in the shit did they expect????
A super-expensive hunk of plastic with no games. Who would go in for that?
And that XBox thing is funny as hell. Gotta love competition.
you like the xbox thing? you will love that:

now that one is actually smart. i like it.
The Xbox stuff is pretty harmless and quite funny. At least it's better than Sony's usual PR tripe, following that brilliant parisian showing one of their execs felt like he had to open his trap again about how PS3 is the only next gen system available today. They never learn.
and bad-beat, i've read that in london sony gave an HDTV and brought you back home in taxi if you bought a ps3. what about it?
The official launch was at Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street. Sony decided to give the first 120 waiting there a free 46 inch HDTV and then also a free cab ride home. Sony spent nearly £250,000 giving away free stuff.
were you one of the first 120? Because I would've preordered to get a free HDTV along with the PS3
I wish! I just went into my local GAME at midnight to get mine. The guys who went up to Virgin were in line for about 40 hours.
I would say that would be a 'hit' for Sony, this time round.
yeah a free hdtv 46 inch? why cant they just do a price drop? lol
cause that would be the smart thing to do
I think my PS3 question fits here:
On the PS3, there's something called Folding@Home, can anyone explain on what it actually does? Protein Folding isn't exactly my forte.
Taken from another forum…
! > Basically the group in question are looking at how the individual amino acids of a protein interact that give the molecule it's final form. So to put this into English, imagine having several differently coloured pieces of paper (some red, blue, white etc) and putting them together into such a way that you form a 3d structure like a cube, or perhaps a sphere or whatever. The pieces of paper and the positions they are in represent different amino acids and the final conformation (the cube etc) is the final 'folded' protein. What scientists have been trying to figure out for a while now is how the amino acid sequence determines how the final protein folds. We know that some of these amino acids have different kinds of chemical behaviour in a cell, with some of them being hydrophobic (IE: They don't like to be next to water molecules) and some of them hydrophillic (IE: They prefer to be surrounded by water molecules).
The problem is that even though a lot of people have done quite a bit of work on simulating how proteins fold, it hasn't been a very successful endeavor. Programming a simulation that accurately predicts how a protein ends up folding from the linear string of amino acids into the final conformation has numerous problems, inlcuding that other proteins are often involved and that the base amino acid sequence doesn't always fold how you'd predict just looking at it. The other problem is that proteins (in a cell) fold into their final conformation in an incredibly short period of time (in the range of nano-seconds, IE: millionths of a second), but for a computer to simulate this takes a lot more effort and time. IIRC, it takes several days for a computer to simulate the folding of a simple protein and that's not really a very time efficient process. Add to this the fact you will have to run these simulations many times to get the most accurate picture you can and you're starting to spend years trying to figure out how a single protein folds.
Hence, what scientists are trying to do with Folding@home is to basically increase the amount of CPU power available to decrease the time it takes for each simulation to run. The other advantage is they can presumably look at a wider array of proteins as well, giving them a much more accurate overall impression than just running a single molecule.
This will lead to potentially new treatments for diseases like Alzheimer's because many diseases are caused by proteins folding in a way that isn't correct (and we do not understand the exact mechanism behind this). As an example, Alzheimer's is caused when a protein misfolds itself into a conformation where it forms a structure that allows it to 'stick' to other similarly misfolded proteins. The misfolded proteins then start to build up into an ever expanding mass, forming 'plaques' in neuronal cells, which induce cell senescence and subsequent deactivation (or death). If we can understand and predict why the proteins fold abnormally, we might be able to interfere with the folding process to stop it or force the proteins to fold normally again, which could considerably help a disease like Alzheimer's.
Here's a short and sweet version for people like me who don't have the attention span to read all of that.
Folding refers to the process of Protein folding. Folding at home is an application that assists in number-crunching for research about proteins.
Every computer connected through Folding at Home donates a little bit of its energy towards processing information and solving complex problems.
There are thousands of computers connected to Folding at Home at any given time. These computers each give a bit of information to one main computer. It's basically a bunch of regular computers combining their power and time to become one huge research supercomputer.
There is another program that processes radio signals called SETI@home, but I don't think that has PS3 compatibility.

Fastest-selling console ever? Nice.
I would be more impressed with this figure if the amount of wiis availible on launch day were the same as the PS3.
prepares for Sony PR blitzkrieg declaring themselves winner of the next gen wars
oh shi-
Only 2 Days and 5 Hours left…
I would be more impressed with this figure if the amount of wiis availible on launch day were the same as the PS3.
Excellent point but…doesn't that in and of itself say something about Nintendo?
Let's not forget, people were crucifying Sony for supposedly not meeting launch figure numbers and even though they managed to miss it by 200,000 units worldwide, there was no shortage and they soon filled the gap.
Now I see that Wii's are difficult to get a hold of and yet everyone is singing praises of joy instead of putting the same song and dance of doom and gloom over Nintendo's head.
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5080&Itemid=2
i don't really know how to judge that… for now i'll say it's stupid.
Just so everyone knows, here are the four reasons why I haven't given up on Sony yet -
1. Final Fantasy - As far as we know, the PS3 is the only console that is getting FF XIII (developed by the FF X / Advent Children team) and FF Versus XIII (developed by the Nomura-led KH 2 team). I like me some Final Fantasy, so this is still a major selling point on this hardware. If Sony manages to keep hold of the FF XIII duo, then all hope is not lost for their expensive silver brick.
2. Level-5 - Level-5 is the team that gave us the brilliant Rogue Galaxy as well as the two Dark Cloud games (the first was decent, the second was excellent). They also further proved their cel-shading mastery when they co-developed Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2 three years ago. Level-5 has one game announced for the PS3 (White Knight Story), and have gone on the record as saying that they never want to work for Microsoft ever again (following the True Fantasy Live Online debacle four years ago). Level-5 might be the strongest 3rd party developer that's firmly allied with Sony and not Microsoft; they're working on some DS games at the moment, but who isn't?
3. David Jaffe - The creator of the Twisted Metal and God of War series is the crown jewel of the SCEA family, and both God of War games have been enormous successes. The PS3 already has a blockbuster waiting to happen in God of War 3.
4. Fumito Ueda - He only has two games to his credit - Ico and Shadow of the Colossus - but they were both critical successes and each earned a strong cult following. Ueda is to SCEI as Jaffe is to SCEA; an up-and-coming game designer that made his mark with some excellent PS2 titles. Ueda's currently working on a PS3 game, and once it's officially announced the PS3 will have another highly anticpated masterpiece of interactive art design.
So yeah, those four reasons - FF, L5, Jaffe, and Ueda - are why I haven't given up on the PS3. I'm only saying this because Sony has been getting a ton of bad press and unlucky breaks recently, but we shouldn't give up on the PS3 just yet.

damn it
but I agree with all your other reasons especially the last one
Just buy them both and be done with it.
Just buy them both and be done with it.
I'm a college student that has to pay for his own books, apartment, and food. Buying them both isn't an option for at least another three or four years.

Moreover, Square-Enix has been known to jump off any ship with a ding in the hull. They abandoned Nintendo almost instantly, and they'll possibly do the same for Sony, if sales look bright on the Nintendo front, though they'd most definitely just release it on both systems.
In addition, Capcom's 'agreement' to keep Resident Evil as a Nintendo-exclusive series ended up being a load of horse crap. Corporations go to where the money is, even if it makes them look moronic.
Never played Dark Cloud, so can't comment.
Agreed. Twisted Metal is pimp and an absolute gem, and God of War is extremely fun to play [even if it tends to lack replay value].
This is the reason to buy a Playstation 3. If Fumito Udea's games remain exclusively on Sony consoles, buying a Playstation 3 is required; it's not a fuckin' option whatsoever. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are two of the greatest game ever created.
@Cyringohn:
- Maybe if FFXIII didn't look like a shitty mixture of Ghost in the Shell and Witch Blade. Not a fan of anything Nomura does, since it tends to be cliché and involves some sort of inner-conflicting bishounen protagonist with a sword-esque weapon.
thats like FFX to a captial X

There's probably zero chance to see FFXIII released on both PS3 and Wii, they can't port it on Nintendo's console. But given how PS3 sales in Japan are abysmal I could see them releasing it on Xbox360, same thing with Metal Gear Solid 4. And it's a given Dragon Quest is going to end up on Nintendo consoles now, DQX will probably be a Wii exclusive.
Agree about Ueda's games being enough to make PS3 a must buy. Seeing what him and Jaffe did with the relatively limited hardware of the PS2 it really bodes well for future installments in the Ico and God of War franchises.

Is the Wii not compatible for porting PS3 and 360 games? And yeah, the whole 'released on PS3 and 360' scheme seems to be happenin', e.g. Vitrua Fighter 5.
Nope, the Wii is severely underpowered compared to PS3/Xbox360. It's basically a Gamecube turbo, Ubisoft's ports for ex are from PS2/GC/Xbox versions of their games.
No offense to anyone, but, the reason nintendo is better than sony is mostly Price
while systems today for nintendo go from 100-250 Sony overcharges thier systems by charging 500-600 dollars for a powered PS2 with ultra DVD.
Sony will never have a really good Backwards compatable system,I think while Wii goes way back to the retro 80's
then again Sony carries alot of the popular franchises (RE,WWE series,DMC,) and nintendo seems to finally running out of ideas,IMO
OT:I own a Ps2 and Gamecube and was at 1st only a nintendo fan..thought SOny was horrible system

Nintendo probably did it so that the Wii would be as cheap as it is, and, therefore, outsell the PS3 due to a huge price difference.
If the Wii had been $600, it's quite obvious that today's Sony-driven market would eat up the PS3 without hesitation.
http://gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=7672
For me? This is the best news ever because I fucking hate the idea of multiple systems. Plus it means when a price drop comes it will affect only one unit and not the ugly possibility of only one and not another.
HOWEVER
This news MAJORLY sucks for two groups:
1. People who bought a 20 but wanted a 60
2. People who just want to play the PS3 games and not be concerned about online, downloadable, connectivity and other next gen abilities.
No offense to anyone, but, the reason nintendo is better than sony is mostly Price
So nothing to do with the games, titles and capabilities they offer? Just price and company names?

Not to be mean, but you have no idea what you are talking about. Sony actually undercharged and its more than a "powered ps2".
The good thing about the Wii is the creativity. The price is ok 2 but its nothing compared to the 360 or ps3 in terms of "power".
edit:
So nothing to do with the games, titles and capabilities they offer? Just price and company names?
Naw, because if the ps3 was the same price as the Wii. I would find it hard to believe that the ps3 would outsell it by alot.
Price answers for a lot of sins.
There are people who will not pay more than $250 for a console. Period. They won't buy a PS3, but might well buy a Wii. Price got them into that market.
Price also lets them create value in a different dimension. If you're willing to spend $600 on a console, they can't offer you the technical features of the PS3, but they can say that your $600 buys you a Wii with a LOT of accessories and games.
A low price will also grant more tolerance for letdown. If you buy a $12,000 car, and it rattles, you'll be less annoyed than if you buy a $50,000 car and it rattles. Conversely, if you buy a $250 console and the launch titles are weak, you'll be less annoyed than if you spent $600 and got the same titles.
The wii isn't outselling just because of the price, although that is one reason. The main reason is the motion technology and it's excellent marketing scheme. Alot of nintendos customers are people who don't even play games. They were possibly just watching tv and saw some guy jumping around with a remote, then they notice it's a games console.
They see it and think whoaa that's cool and probably end up buying it, the price helps this method even more. Or they may be walking around town and see one of nintendos outside wii stands, they have a go and they're sold.
Nintendo have really thought out their plan this time around and are attracting all the customers the ps3 and 360 can't touch.
Now I bought a wii on launch not because of price or motion technology, I bought it for all the exclusives. I'm sure there are many like me but in a few years I bet over 50% of the wii's userbase will be new gamers. Who have all been drawn in by the excellent marketing nintendo are doing.
I had a nice surprise yesterday when I got this in the post.
!
Wasn't too sure why I had got this in the post until I checked back through my emails and found this.

T'was pretty nice of 'em to do that. Congrats.
Wow, I'm impressed. That's a pretty nice gesture, considering that Sony is acknowledging your significant investment and that Casino Royale is a good movie. Good for you, Beat.
Three more PS3 games that have me very intrigued after some recent additional research:
Lair: great visuals, huge sense of scale, and it's about flying dragons. You know, like Eragon, except that it doesn't suck. Every single video that I've seen of it looks excellent.
Uncharted: This game looks gorgeous. It has absolutely beautiful animation and settings, and it's about hunting for treasure in a jungle or something. It's by Naughty Dog, who make the Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter games.
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction: The Ratchet and Clank games are excellent - I have only played the first three, but all are great shooter/platformers with no weaknesses; it's like Mega Man, except that it's in 3D without sucking. Insomniac also made Resistance: Fall of Man, which is probably the best PS3 game out at the moment, so they know their way around the system.
I'm very interested in Lair! I dunno much about it but the concept I've heard sounds fantastic!!
