edit: the title of this movie is "The Frog Princess" if the title of this thread threw you off
Shit! I just knew they were gonna pull a wild card on us sooner or later!
I'm pretty dang excited about this. :>

Heh, my mother who's practically a Disney fanatic always goes on about how there was never a "Black Princess".
I had a feeling this sort of thing was coming.
I'm more surprised that its a not a 3-d movie.
What the hell
DISNEY'S BLACK PEOPLE: THE MOVIE
it's all about the princcess collection, and all their friends. The more the merryer. Gotta tap into the market with the black comunity. They have money too, and we need stuff for them to buy as well.
Disney is all about money and marketing. Disney doesn't care about catering to other cultures and backgrounds, they just want money from more people.
not sure what to think about that tinker bell and friends thing they got going either. always questions disney's motives
…..I'll probably end up watching it in the end too.
And hey! I thought they were done with the classical animation? Well, I perfer classic anyways. I'm just surprised since they said they were all about the CG now.
Hmmm, seems odd until you read the concept. The story is a retelling of Frog Prince and takes place in New Orleans. She also happens to be a frog.
I bet Chef Paul Prudhomme'll make a cameo.
Yeah, I actually think the premise sounds promising. I love that they set it in the French Quarter of New Orleans, that's kind of neat. And I love that they're going back to 2-D, I miss seeing it. Thanks for the heads up, taboo!
Well…..that is.....a blatantly honest title..
Well…..that is.....a blatantly honest title..
The title is The Frog Princess, but everyone's focusing on the fact that it has a black female character.
The latest episode of South Park couldn't be more poignant.
DISNEY'S NIGRA PRINCESS!
…seriously, it's nice to see something that isn't stupid 3D shit. :\ 3D is nice once in awhile but 2D will always be superior.
So it's in New Orleans?
does the movie take place underwater or something?
I imagine part of it does considering the amphibious and reptilian cast.
And given her dress in the one shot probably 1920's.
Invader Pichu's avatar: the movie.
The movie comes to a tragic end when the Bush administration sends a hurricane to kill all of the black people
the real culprit is Global Warming!
Then who shall the villian be?
Well this thread sure turned political quickly.
Hehe…you guys are too much.
Anyway, I'm with Taboo, I'm quite happy about this. I've been lamenting the loss of the 2D animated fairy tale tradition, and this looks like one of the more interesting things I've heard coming from Disney in a long time. It could end up being lame, but it's promising so far!
Hmm…interesting. I wonder if this will be a good story. Well, actually, it probably will be, just the sequel will be total crap. Most Disney sequels are total crap.
If that girl was real i'd probably date her.

And black people aren't going to watch a movie just because there is a Black princess in it. White people might just to see what its about.
There needs to be a full feature length version of Coal Black an De Sebben Dwarves
no, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying Disney thinks it needs to make a story with a black protagonist to interest little black girls in Disney. I'm not saying, there should not be stories that cater to differnt people, I'm just saying Disney does it for all the wrong reasons.
They hire great artists and story tellers to make great movies, but it's the company who is still in charge, and gets to dictate what it wants. To make a movie that will make them lots and lots of money.

Deplorable as it might be for a studio to make a film for reasons other than artistic expression and box office returns, Disney has been doing that sort of thing since before Walt went below sea level. Disney Land charged entrance fees from the day it opened, and those fees are only going up, up, up.
I honestly don't care if there are political motivations behind the story, as long as it's a good story and well made. And nobody really knows if that's really the case anyway. Disney's always liked to put a different spin on fairy tales. Do we need to look at everything under a microscope?

To me, one of the best animated movies by Disney was "The Emperor's New Groove". Just, everything about it was great.

I agreei like that movie and also The Incredibles
Randy Newman? Isn't that the guy who sits around singing about what he sees?
Randy newman? I hates that guy. And this movie is supposed to have jazz in it so he might just screw the music part up.
I won't understand the songs if Randy Newmna sings it.
It's a story 'bout friendship~
~ With music by me ~
'Bout a frog and a Princess ~

~ Something like that!~
Randy Newman rocks. He ain't no Jazz musician though!
Come on, Newman did a terrific job with the musical score in Toy Story.
I'm still surprised they actually decided to do a theatrical 2D film. This is theatrical, right? They're not going to change their minds and release it straight to video, are they?
Black princess, white princess, whatever. Deep down, she's going to be nothing more than a typical Disney princess, as most are just copies of previous disney princesses with a few tweaks. It's basically black Snow White.
So because she is a black princess, she is a ghetto princess? Boo@ that line.
It looks interesting. Might see some closet racist pop out.
As a hug Disney animation fan I've been following this for a while. John Lasseter and all the folks at Disney are really pushing for this movie to reinvigorate the WDFA. This one's been put on the fast track, with Rapunzel and American Dog both undergoing serious retooling.
Alot of people want this film to bring about the 2nd Disney Renaissance, and if they do it well (and do future films well) they very well could.
Randy Newman isn't my ideal composer either, but in the end he's not the worst choice either. Randy is not doing the vocals, only the score, and the jazz bits he did for Monster's Inc were pretty good. ALSO he's not working alone, he's using the Dirty Dozen Brass Band which is an AWESOME authentic New Orleans jazz band. Alan Menken's music would be more traditional Disney stuff, but John Lasseter is making a point to keep this movie fresh and unique.
The jazz inspired 1920s New Orleans should make an interesting setting. Personally I LOVE the roaring 20s and can't wait to see what Disney plans to do with the setting. (We can already see the influence in the style from the concept art)
For anyone interested, here's a cast list that was released for auditions:
ALSO, and this is important, the story is NOT a retelling of Frog Prince. It's based on the Frog Princess, a Russian fairy tale.
And some of the front-runners for Maddy are Anika Noni Rose (Larelle in Dreamgirls) Jennifer Hudson (Effie in Dreamgirls, Oscar winner) and Alicia Keys.
Behind the scenes politics aside though, this is actually shaping up to return WDFA to its proper form. After Tarzan we've only had 1 commercial succes from the WDFA (Lilo and Stitch).
edit: and before I forget now that John Lasseter is in charge of the WDFA, he hopes to bring back classical animation and Disney is using Frog Princess as their first step back into the medium.
So Frog Princess has alot on its shoulders:
Yeah I'm really hoping to see classical animation comeback. I'm tired of the same CGI bullshit that comes out once every a couple of months with the same plot. Which usually has to do with a bunch of animals with one being extremely energetic and squirrelly.
I'm actually interested i this project now. You are starting to please me, Disney.
Cochise, who's that in your avatar?
Hmm…sounds interesting. I'm mildly intrigued by it.
(Side Note: Fuck Walt Disney and his antisemitism.)
He's dead Jim…
Hahaha, this is why I love AP and always will.
Anyways, I was watching my newly purchased Peter Pan DVD the night before last and it advertised this really stupid looking 3D movie simply titled "Tinker Bell". About the fairy world and all that shit, but one thing caught my eye just because of this topic, one of them was black.
Now, there could have been black fairies before, I just thought it was interesting. I actually don't see this as a big deal. I mean…didn't Disney do "The Proud Family"?
reads post I'm worried with how I worded things...

I think Proud Family was picked up and funded by Disney. It was originally meant to air on Nickelodeon, but they decided not to.
I'm not so sure about a fairy, but there was a centaur named Sunflower. Funny story there– Disney denies ever making such a character.

Hollywood Montrose?
Glad to see IDsney is going back to 2D/
about the Tinker bell movie..its in tie to the new Merchandise lineup called Disney faeries..
Cant wait to see the Trailer for the frog princess movie though
…I really think people are overthinking the whole "main character is black thing."
Yeah, seriously. If anything, when they were coming up with the main character of the movie, they thought of how much attention would be brought to it instead of this nonsense of "trying to bring in a black audience." So judging by some of the behavior in this thread… it worked pretty well.
Here's the (scant) wikipedia article on the original Frog Princess tale:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Frog_Princess
Meh, it could work. I personally have nothing wrong with Disney choosing to create a black princess, since it was due. We have a tendency to over villain-ize Disney the company, but from everything that I can tell it's animators are really devoted to their craft. Don't put the sins of the evil corporate drones on the poor animators.

I really can't wait to see this movie! Finally, the guys at Disney may do something right by bringing back the beloved 2D movies!!
This is really exciting news
….unless it's another 3D Disney movie plot put to paper because their 3D department was suffering.
