I think the dvds will be pretty damn awesome. After all, they'll be fully uncut and contain a new uncut dub and the original Japanese version. The subtitles will either be accurate and use correct names or completely horrible and use changed names. But overall the dvds will be utterly awesome.
The Future of One Piece anime…In America! FUNIMATION TAKES OVER!

So I don't have to do an hour of searching th pages here, would someone care to give me the gist of what Funi plans to do now that they have it? I'm surprised I missed the announcement. Appreciate it.
-
I just hope that the quality is good. I noticed that the KF versions of the early episodes didn't have great quality. Hopefully these DVDs will.

Interview with Lance that started the madness:

Has anyone seen Mato? He's been gone for a while.

He said he wouldn't be able to get on much during the week.

@EvilGamerX:
Awesome proof to show Gunfall is wrong!
How it is written in the manga! Shows that it is 2 names.
ガン・フォールIn that case it could be Gan Fall OR Gun Fall. Just put a space in the middle of either.
-
It just occurred to me that I need to update the first post of this thread.
It's probably best to just go straight to the FUNimation FAQ thread for a good synopsis though.

Well you could cut out all the crap on contacting anyone but Toei, Funimation, and Oda and then I think it will look better.
-
Heso!
Well I am not sure if there is still more images of the use of the R in Zoro but here is an interesting one. It is from the ED Dreamship.

-
Oooh, hahahaha! If they keep the endings and keep him Zolo that is gonna be hard to do.
-
Just another random thought:
Has anyone tried coming up with lyrics for any dubbed OP/ED songs their going to show? Y'Know, like a brainstorm or loose outline. If it's anywhere close to Yu Yu Hakusho's "SMILE BOMB" or Rurouni Kenshins "FRECKLES", then paint me excited.
And yeah, that whole "Zoro" case just keeps knocking on the back door, wanting to be let back in. You think that with all this hard evidence TOEI would roll over and give us what we want.
-
I just really don't get why Toei is doing it, I mean, they flippin animated that "ZORO".

I really don't see how they couldn't in light of all the overwhelming evidence. It would be just plain simple stubborness.
BTW LC, love your video "Owned Piece", have it favorited.
-
Not all that stubborn, I mean … I kinda figured if a new dub would come, they'd keep Zolo just because it's what the manga uses and what 99% of the merchandice in America uses.
I don't think Viz wants to go back yet again to change his name to Zoro

I have an animated gif of that.
(it will certainly be a pain for them to edit that when they release the DVDs)
Oh, and I thought of another instance with Zoro. In movie 5: (this was supposed to be an old sword that he carved his name into)
-
Well, they could easily edit the sword thing.
-
I personally would like them to leave the songs in Japanese for the dub. That way when any FUNimation episode plays on Cartoon Network people will know that these episodes will be different from the previous dub right away. But I wouldn't mind hearing dub songs either. Here's a dub version I came up with for "We Are". Some of it is inspired/ripped from a fan-dub I heard:
Let's gather all our dreams and our destinies
And together we'll find the things that we've been looking for
ONE PIECE!
A compass in your hand is just a source of delay
We can take the helm and find a new path to hunt
A dusty treasure map full of legends of the past
Will no longer be a thing of myths if we can prove it true
Even when your fears and sorrows continue to pull you down
You can find the strength in the friendships that you have
It's alright if you believe!
Now let's gather all our dreams and our destinies
And together we'll find the things that we've been looking for
I've got a pocket full of coins
So maybe you wanna be my friend?
We Are, We Are on the cruise!
We Are! -
Well, with the dub that'll be airing on TV we wouldn't be getting "We Are!".
We'd be getting "Hikari E", followed by "Bon Voyage!".
-

Well they're gonna get to the "We Are" episodes eventually.
Speaking of which, when FUNimation gets to the first 143 episodes and if they do get the chance to be aired on Cartoon Network, when do you think they should start airing and in what time slot? Assuming FUNimation gets to those first seasons sooner than later, I think they should start sometime in January on a weekday slot, kind of like what "Naruto" is doing now, so that Cartoon Network can basically speed-run through.
-
I just hope people can forget 4Kid's dub exists.
At least we're getting dubbed openings. If they are anything like KF's translations, I'll probably be very happy with them.
4Kids dubbed Believe! but it was terrible, the girl repeated the same lines over and over again, nothing like the original song, it just used the same music.
And I think if CN finds it to be worthwhile they may run a marathon of all One Piece to get the tone right.
What's especially going to be tough is stopping people getting confused. Because of 4kid's marketing, many kids watch the show. That means they may hardly notice the voice changes, and they'll probably get confused when the plot changes back.
I mean, after all, references to Little Garden were completely missing, and kids can remember little details. So to a large number of the old audience that was fine watching it, since they just know it as "that cartoon with the stretchy guy" it'll be hard putting things together.
I mean, if I was about 5 or 6 and suddenly Mr. 2 was fighting Luffy, but everything points to it being before Arabasta, it'd be confusing.
Oh well. If they're too stupid to realize it's different or the dub sucked, let them be amazed at the genius of the FUNi dub.
Who knows, if it does really well they might allow them to air a mix of the Uncut and TV versions.

A possible English Hikari e that was posted a while back:
@ultimateclima:~I remember when I started to begin my search
A blast of water came this way
To the everlasting world I see today
With an overflowing passion in my chest
I’m ready for an adventure
Seeking the light that can’t be kept at bay
When the summer sun shined bright the heart told me to sail towards the light
“Fly away gum blue sea”
The door to the new world has opened It’s up to me to follow the new path
“Fly away gum blue sky”
Swaying through between the waves I know I can escape despair
For the horizon right on the other side
Yea yea yea yea
Is where I’m goin
I remember when I started to begin my search
A blast of water came this way
To the everlasting world I see today
With an overflowing passion in my chest
I’m ready for an adventure
Seeking the light that can’t be kept at bay~ -
Remember that Mato said that it's not 100% confirmed. They might use the original Japanese language, or for all we know a completely new song on the Cartoon Network version (like Naruto started out with).
-
Well, they could easily edit the sword thing.
If they edited the sword, then it wouldn't be an UNCUT and UNEDITED DVD then, wouldn't it.
-
How is the sword any different from the Wanted Poster then? I wasn't talking about that.
-
I just hope people can forget 4Kid's dub exists.
No one will ever forget the poison suction

No, that actually WAS the original song, "Dreamin' of You", Believe is just a cover by FOLDER5, which does a lot Euro-beat covers. (See also, Jango's Dance Carnival)
-
About Little Garden, Funi should basically just air Water 7 and Enies Lobby with all the stuff related to that left in, and kind of just pretend theres no contradiction with anything and that everyone knows what Little Garden is. Then show Little Garden later. Thats what I would do.
-
I think he means if Movie 5 were to be dubbed by Funi that it would be Zolo on the sword
-
Guys, even if "Zolo" stays in the uncut version, they are not going to edit the pictures to say "Zolo". They'll proboally just refer to him like that, but still have Zoro on the signs.
-
Oh yeah and is Funi going to release edited DVDs as well or just the uncuts? I don't see why companies bother to release two versions of anime.
-
@Lobster:
Alright, so Funimation says they are releasing 2 to 3 box sets every year, containing 13 episodes… I wish it would contain more... My Invader Zim Box Set contains 25 episodes... Ohh well, I just hope that they give us good high quality, with widescreen. Animated DVD menus, translated interviews with Oda, etc…
I sure hope you mean widescreen from 207 and on, and fullscreen before that. Because cropping the first 206 episodes would just suck. (Like the new DBZ-season boxes. Pretty much everyone are angry with those being cropped.)
-
@Skull:

They said they were doing uncuts all the way.
-
They said they were doing uncuts all the way.
Thats good. Every time I look at what Viz released for Naruto I ask myself "who the heck would want these edited Naruto DVDs"?
-
The tons of fans who only watch the dub. It's a good move if you have a series as popular in the States as Naruto is. One Piece isn't anywhere near as popular in America, so selling only one type of DVD is a better choice in its case.
-

You'd be surprised, they actually sell pretty well. Last year, the edited version of Naruto volume 1 actually made Best Buy's top 10 list for anime (at number 1 at that :/)

Parents buying it for their kids?

Is that you Zetto? From REO?
Also, on the subject of music, is it more likely for Funi to use the original Japanese theme, or a new one? Because a lot of Funi's properties uses the original songs.
-
The real Naruto fans download the subs…^-^'

I thought the Naruto DVDs were uncut though… Or did they release two sets?
-
Damnit, why are there so many funimation threads >:O I posted this in the wrong one
I'm sort of on the rope on 'Zolo.' On one hand, it is a trivial thing to worry about, but on the other… it's on his wanted poster for crying out loud.
Ah well, it won't stop me from getting uncuts.
-
@Lobster:

There are the TV version DVDs, which are singles with 4 episodes each, and uncut boxsets with 13 episodes each.
FUNi is basically doing they same thing, but decided it wasn't worth it to release the cut TV version.
-
Naruto can have it because Cartoon Network has special standards just for it so the fans don't whine. You know, since that fanbase is apprently way more important. If I was doing the dub of that show, I'd do the following:
It's not that CN holds the fanbase in a higher regard. It's that Naruto was the most popular anime series in America based on the fansubs ALONE. CN wants all those people who watched the free fansubs to tune into Toonami and watch the dub so they keep it as close to unedited as possible to make them happy. Not to mention, Viz spared no expense trying to find perfect voice fits for EVERY character. I stand by my feeling that Naruto is often BETTER in english than it was in Japanese. And Naruto's english voice is perfect, because it has the same raspy, whiney brat voice he has in Japanese. I think the people complaining just thought everyone sounded kewl BECAUSE they weren't speaking english.

Hello all! Sorry I haven't been around, really busy as usual. Besides OP, there are other shows that need attention, so you can imagine how insanely busy things can get. This weekend I have to work like crazy too, so I won't be able to hang around much, sorry :(
gogoedward - I read your post up above but I'm not sure I see a question in there.
Thanks everyone for your help with stuff yesterday or the day before. I can't make any promises for stuff but we're trying our best. If stuff happens (and if I'm allowed to talk about said stuff, of course) I'll let you know.
I'll try to get on late tonight if possible and answer questions. I'm fairly certain I won't have time this weekend though, so it might be my last one for a while.

Then I better get this in while I have a chance.
Question 1
You've stated again and again that "you're the sub guy". Does that mean it's safe to assume that the various changes the big scary list is dictating will not only be present in the Dub, but in the Subtitles as well.
For instance, are we going to read Zolo every time Zoro's name is spoken or read "whatever Boost" instead of Point for Chopper's attacks?Question 2
I know a lot of people have done a lot of searching on how to get in contact with Toei about the Big Scary List with less than great success. What would you suggest. What exactly can we do to help get some of the more obvious mistakes (Mantora… Teech...) corrected. Even if they want to be stubborn about sticking with 4Kids travisties against the anime, even Toei must understand that real words must be spelled correctly. -
How exactly have people been trying to contact Toei Animation in the first place?
-
Well, I think most people have been sending stuff to Mato so he can pass it on. One guy I believe is taking a list of suggestions to a convention. I've been looking for e-mail addresses.
-
There isn't anything OMG NEW here, but ANN has posted a report on Funimation at Anime Boston:
http://animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2007/anime-boston/funimation

QUESTION:This has nothing to do with OP. But is Beck gonna have subtitles trying to decipher what the nonsensical engrish in that show meant or are they gonna leave the "english" dialogue unsubbed? Any idea?
QUestion: I don't know if it's been addressed yet,but does Sanji still have the special ending nicknames in the sub? (i.e. Crap-Geezer,Crap-Swordsman,crap-etc.)
-
Well atleast now people can stop saying that Funi having One Piece is a hoax. Also I can't wait for the big announcement about the future of One Piece. When is Anime Expo? I hope the announcement isn't bad. All I can think of is the announcement being something that will shatter our dreams of a good dub and reveal some horrible news that we'd never want to hear. It'll probably good news though, I hope.
