Whitebeard stronger than Roger?

Chill, I know that he tied with Gol D. Roger and all, but I think that he was stronger than Roger in his prime. Now why would I say something like this?

First of all, Edward Newgate was called ‘Whitebeard’ during the all his pirating days and those of Roger. So that means he probably was an old man when he started pirating, and was past his prime, because I fail to believe a young man would call himself Whitebeard. Secondly, WB told Shanks that he was 100 years too young to tell him what to do; if we take that literally it would mean WB is at least 137 years old, making him 115 when Roger died.

So, Roger was probably in his prime when he was PK, and Whitebeard equalled him as an old man, so my guess is if WB had fought Roger when they were both in their prime, then Newgate would have won.

I'm pretty sure that I've even seen similar lines in other manga, so it's probably a Japanese colloquialism. A quick check of Google reveals that it is so. Hyakunen Hayai means "a hundred years too early" and is just a way of indicating that the person being spoken to either lacks the strength to challenge them or lacks the authority to make such a request.

Newgate could theoretically be that old, but it's probably just him rhetorically slapping down Shanks for acting above his station.

PHYSICAL Strength, yes. Strength in other areas, Roger was stronger. Roger became Pirate King, Whitebeard did not.

When was that said.. As far as I know is that whitebeard was the only one to ever fight with roger and it finish in a tie.. Going by that I think that roger was stronger because why would he be pirate king and not WB, and that only on to tie roger in a fight, i look at it as more he tied him a few times but not everytime

Yeah. People keep making up their own theories about who had advantages over who and as far as I'm concerned it's really quite simple.

1. Oda said Whitebeard is the only man to ever fight Roger to a draw. i.e. Roger was never beaten. This means Whitebeard was capable of equalling Roger.
2. End of discussion.

In terms of the details, we'll never know anything else until we're told differently, and all the speculation in the world won't get us closer to the answer. Just because Whitebeard has scars and is on a respirator doesn't mean Roger did it to him. Just because Roger always smiles the Luffy smile and Whitebeard always scowls doesn't mean Roger was stronger and Whitebeard was weaker.

As far as we know: Roger > Whitebeard.

And that phrase IS a japanese colliquialism: I hear it in video games, anime, movies, and manga all the time.

No, I think that Roger is ahead of Whitebeard. Think about it, Roger is the man famous for being Pirate King, while Whitebeard is the man famous for being "a match for Roger." Yet, Whitebeard has no One Piece and no Pirate King. That and he's injured or something. Whitebeard probably leads a pretty sad life because of all this.

Being able to match Roger doesn't mean that Whitebeard ever beat him. It could mean that Whitebeard was the only one who could fight with Roger on equal ground.

After all, Roger had no injuries at his death, while Whitebeard is scarred and stuff. Really, Whitebeard doesn't look like a winner, despite being the strongest man in the world.

I don't think that "they're equals" works for this one, unlike Shanks vs. Mihawk. All signs point to Roger having the lead, despite his death.

EDIT: Also Whitebeard isn't the direct translation of his name. To be more precise it translates to White Mustache but I think that sounded too corny so the translators chose Whitebeard.

See, that's a common misconception. One Piece is a post mortem thing. Roger is basically an Odaverse Levasseur, saying, "Find my Treasure, if you can figure out the mystery!". One Piece is everything Roger amassed during his life. Before he died, it was just treasure.

If nobody except Roger got One Piece then he is the only credible person for information on it.

There was an interesting THEORY (not sayin its fact folks) a while back that said One Piece might be the True History Robin is searching. This is based on the fact that she needs all of the "pieces" and make it into ONE. (for those of you who didnt get it…One + Piece = One Piece.) Not to mention Gold roger said youll have to search the whole world for it and seeing as how all the "histories" are spread out this also supports the theory. And I highly doubt One Piece is just strength fame and power. And whos to say WB has no power...

But my whole point is that One Piece is a post-mortem thing. Before Roger died, it didn't exist. It's whatever Roger amassed during his life, and then he basically did what Oliver Levasseur did, and said, "Find it, if you can! I left it at that place!"

ROGER never calls it One Piece. Everyone else does.

No, the time isn't right. Olivia's ship was destroyed by Saul's fleet shortly before the Ohara attack (20 years) ago. If anyone helped Roger with the Poneglyphs, it would be Robin's father, who I actually think is Roger himself.

After all, it would make absolute sense for Roger to be her father. She was the youngest person to have a devil fruit that we've seen, and the timeline actually fits.

Anyway, back on topic. They were equals in Fighting. Period. End of story. Roger had the advantage in everything else.

It's kinda funny that we're all trusting the words of a clown. But in any case, Buggy clearly says they tied in a fight. Not in intelligence, not in fame, not in anything else. Just fighting.

if there aren't the key why only roger went there? why didn't WB go there since he was roger's equal? why will luffy go there? what is the only connection roger to luffy which can't be found in any other crew?

yes olvia returned 2 years after roger has died but the fact is that olvia was missing for some years so she could have joined roger's crew in his last year as a pirate

i think the proffessor stated how many years olvia was missing but i am too tired to search it now
