@Zephray I mean… if it did, it would have already. They were most likely being worked on at the same time.
Sorry, I didn’t mean slow down the production. I meant it could slow down the release schedule. Meaning we don’t get a set in November.
-
@Crystalice1 This is funny since One Piece is on Netflix and Toonami again so the excuse of it not being giant in the English dub is bullshit, my friend.
-
It’s just so hard to gauge exactly how popular it’s become. There are a lot of unpopular properties on Netflix, so I don’t think that’s the be-all-end-all, though isn’t certainly a promising point. I think the property is a ton more popular now than it used to be. But it’s all relative. It still isn’t nearly as popular as MHA and Naruto, which I think are the main two properties to get dubbed games.
-
@Nitwit OP is more popular than ever, but i wouldn’t say the dub is still giant. We can see by the listings that the dub version of film red has wayyyy fewer showings than the sub.
-
@Nitwit We're talking about the games right? I agree it bs, especially since One Punch Man, MHA and Demon Slayor games all got dubbed. And Chris Sabat's Okatron 5000 studio dubs the DBZ games as well I believe.
To add insult to injury they also brought Colleen in to voice Luffy for the OP card game commercial which makes it even more annoying
-
All those series have a large dub fanbase which means the companies profit over them for adding an English track.
From what I can tell on the discourse online, a lot of OP fans simply don’t like the dub while those other anime have a more even split, while DBZ fans actually prefer the dub for that one.
Unfortunately OP fans side with the sub more AND the games don’t sell nearly as much as those other titles IN AMERICA which is why we don’t get an English dub track for OP games.
Popularity matters, y’all.

I was about to say this. Agreed. For some reason, OP’s dub is not as popular as other dubs.
-
It’s mostly luffy’s voice. A lot of people don’t like the scratchy and screechy-ness of it.
Honestly this thread going days without a reply should tell you how much people don’t really care about the dub.
-
I find it amusing that in other dub languages like Spanish and French Luffy sounds closer to Colleen than Mayumi
-
I don’t know why this thread would be particularly active even IF the dub were more popular. There are some things to discuss, sure, but (and the gap is closing) we’re mostly discussing material that has already been discussed twice before and year’s ago.

People at least used to post their thoughts and on-the-spot "reviews" of the dub after every set released, but then certain members started flaming any criticism (valid or not) of the dub, and I'm willing to bet that scared off a bit of the discussion. Not to mention all the AP down time. Most folks haven't really come back to spend the time to write their thoughts except when a major character appears for the first time.
Here's hoping we can get back to chatting more about the dub more regularly without being attacked for any criticism of it. I see a good handful of new and returning names here, so I'm hopeful. Seems like it's picking up a bit.
I know Blake disagreed, but has anyone else felt like Jinbei's voice has been shifting around a good bit lately? I feel like sometimes it isn't quite as deep or is missing gravel. I'm still frustrated by the ten or so episodes where they totally forgot to pitch it down, then didn't bother to fix it for streaming release. I'm not sure if they'll fix it for the bluray, but I hope so.
-
Also some people stopped watching the dub due to Funimation firing Vic. Which is a stupid reason to stop watching the series. I'm thankful that Johnny replaced Vic before Funimation/Crunchyroll started to dub Dressrosa on the tv series.
I mostly haven't been talking the dub recently mostly due I'm waiting for the collection set to come out as well waiting for the dub to come on Crunchyroll.
-
It's crazy how we used to worry about the releases really really slowing down post water 7. But look where we are now, we are a couple sets away from Wano.
-
Yeah i remember them dreadful days especially around Fishman Island, waiting until around the 15th refreshing the Funi store hoping we get a new set

I think it's mostly due to a couple of things...
Residual reputation from 4Kids, the series' length, how far behind the dub is so they just jumped to the sub, and Luffy's voice... but to be fair, I have seen many people be patient with the dub and even prefer Luffy's dub voice. Unfortunately a lot of it is simply due to the nature of the beast.
As for those that have been around a long time like myself, things have changed. There was a lot more to talk about when it was freshly licensed after 4Kids dropped it but the dub's novelty has worn off. 15 years and over 800 dubbed episodes later we keep getting what we expect the product to be. I assume most people don't comment on it because it's sort of like business reviews... y'know, people are more likely to speak up when something is negative. But because the dub has been been consistent with its quality, it's business as usual.
Now that the dub is closer to the current episodes than ever, a lot of the material we're getting was only just recently talked about by lots of people. It might even be seen as redundant to some people due to its accuracy.
As for me, I greatly prefer the Japanese version, but I still do like the dub and I care a lot about it.
-
I have friends who say they hate OP because their only exposure was to the 4KIDS dub as a teenager/kid. Most people who have already written off OP since childhood don’t know the history or understand that 4KIDS OP was not representative of real OP. Why would they learn the history of the dub if they’ve written it off years ago (because of the bad dub)?
It’s really tough to first re-educate people that what they watched wasn’t really OP, then to get them to give it a second try with an open mind.
I think the dub and show is taking off a bit now in part because there’s a new, younger generation of anime fans who aren’t prejudiced against OP because of 4KIDS. People in their thirties are way less likely to be into it than teens and people on their early twenties because they didn’t have that bad initial experience.
-
I'm thinking the viewership for the dub must be good, or at least consistent for them to continue to produce it. Otherwise they wouldn't put all the effort to put in all this effort with no return. I'm still hopeful to one day we'll get the earlier movies dubbed.
I hope Film Red does well outside of Japan, it was awesome to the Time Square promotion they did

Right. My girlfriend's half sister who's a teenager really likes One Piece and she discovered it because it's one of the highest ranked anime on streaming sites. She also has many friends her age that also like it. I also see One Piece everywhere now thanks to younger people who didn't have to deal with the barrier that we did in the 2000s.
Of course, the recent mainstream push of anime really helped it, same with others. If you had told me around 2009 or 2010 that one day JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Hunter x Hunter would be super popular in the west (along with One Piece recovering its reputation significantly) I wouldn't have believed you.
-
Funny enough my first exposure to OP was random 4KIDS episodes in Alabasta, I got some laughs out of it. I didn't fall in love with it until the first airing of Skypiea on Toonami. And I didn't see the beginning of the series until the Voyages first released. Time sure flys
-
We are also at the part of the arc where all the main players have voices, so there’s less new stuff each voyage.
Katakuri’s donut song was really good. My wife was taken aback.
-
It's ironic because as an 11 year old, I loved the 4Kids dub (alongside Naruto, Bobobo, YuyuHakusho, and whatever else was on Toonami). It wasn't until 2006 when I imported Jump Super Stars and saw Afro Luffy and was like, what the heck is this? So I went online and discovered Subbed anime, and caught up with the anime and manga (I was reading in the printed US Shonen Jumps at the time). Ever since 2007, when Skypiea and Unlimited Adventure on Wii came out, I've been loving the Funi dub, and have gotten so many people into it, family, friends, my wife. It's wild how far its come, with the Times Square takeover, the Newspaper articles in the past couple years. I always spot people with One Piece car stickers, shirts, or other merch walking around. Its general perception has significantly improved
-
It definitely has recovered since those days.
I hope film red does good tho. It’s been getting a lot of promotion for an anime film. If it tanks, the DBZ, My Hero, Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen fandoms will never let us hear the end of it.

Lol, I’m thankful I’m not really involved in the toxic anime community that does this type of shit. I really only follow this forum and some OP people on Twitter, who I boot once they get annoying. I’m thankful I have other hobbies with less toxic communities (foreign film, underground comics, etc.). I think the toxicity is always going to be present in the anime community, where much of the fan base is comprised of teenagers, who just have more time and energy to troll on the internet. Same with the gaming community.
And yeah, the donuts song was great; that actor is nailing it perfectly, as is Brûlée’s. (If anyone’s been a little weaker this arc, it’s BM, Oven, and Jinbei for me.) When I was reading the arc, I was deeply skeptical of Katakuri and his being the final fight on WCI until he revealed that side of himself. It made me love that character, and it was the best OP fight for me at the time. I’ve also been surprised by some of the real slick animation on this recent set. Everyone thinks of 870 and forgets there’s a very well-animated episode or two of their fight before that one.
Based on the promotion, is it safe to assume Anthony Bowling directed ADR for Film Red?

You really shouldn’t concern yourself with the opinions of random petty people online; if they want to talk some shit they’ll come up with any reason to do so

That’s been confirmed:
-
Ah! Wild that Mike gave him that responsibility. I know Mike tends to take the high-profile jobs/films.
-
@midod Still, after all the promotion, I don’t want it doing significantly worse than those series’ most recent movies - it’d be embarrassing.
-
For me, it’s never been about the people liking it. It’s about what I as a fan get if more people like it: old movies and tv specials dubbed, games dubbed, more merchandise in the states (at typical stores like target or hottopic), more collaborations (Uniqlo, lush, etc.), more events (Comic-Con traveling Sunny, NYC Times Square, etc. So yeah, do I care about more people liking it for popularity’s sake alone? Not at all. I care because of what bonuses popularity brings.
-
^ Exactly! It's general popularity has risen to the point that we have Hardcover Versions of the Color Walks, English versions of the Ace Novels and Sanji Cookbook, as well as almost all the TV Specials and Movies dubbed on Blu-Ray, and the Official Trading Card game in English.
I don't think we'll ever get the Vivre Cards translated, but I do hope we get the Law and Heroine Novels, the Ace and Sanji manga spin-offs, HOPEFULLY the OLD movies dubbed, and wishful thinking maybe a dub for the next big video game (After Odyssey, though a future update including the dub like they did for My Hero One's Justice 2 wouldn't hurt)
-
That’s my main reason too. Popularity is important. Without it, we wouldn’t get shit. Lol. They probably spent a lot of money promoting this movie. I don’t want it to underperform compared to the other series most recent movies because that’s gonna send a message to everyone involved - Toei, Crunchyroll, movie chains, etc etc.
-
Yeah we're definitely in a much, much better place now. But boy, did it sure take an awfully long time to get here. It's kind of crazy to think that pretty much anything 4kids-related was only in the public eye for a grand total of 3-4 years, but caused so much upheaval for so long. The 00's bubble popping certainly didn't do us any favors in relaunching the brand, and Toei's lack of communication and fickleness surely didn't help either, but at least they're putting their all into things now.
And about the dub's "popularity", I wouldn't put a lot of stock into it. Many, or perhaps the majority, are assuredly watching it without any qualms on platforms where it's available (which, again, hasn't always exactly been widely viewable thanks to Toei and Co.). On Netflix for instance, data shows that people (in North America anyway) are more likely to finish or watch more a foreign program dubbed than if just a subbed option is available. Anyone that tells you otherwise is just part of a very loud and vocal group, as I'm sure we've all encountered.

Honestly, my priority is for old movies, then old specials to get dubbed. That’s very far and away my wish over all the other stuff.
-
@Zephray well, maybe not Boruto, and MHA is ending next year so that is another problem if you have hopes for Mashle and Undead Unluck anime getting games which looks unlikely unless we pray to the gods
-
@Sano Johnny is also friends with Vic so take that what you may.
-
@MooseAP Attack on Titan was also huge in the states yet the games never got dubbed to this very day. I guess you can say no one liked the games from Omega because not many people know they make games outside of hack-and-slash DW-style games. And keep in mind some Omega games got dubbed with a freaking Zelda game getting an English dub. lol
-
Huh! That’s a good point. I’m surprised the AoT games didn’t get a dub, considering its popularity. I guess there are other factors we aren’t fully considering, like rights, # of voice actors per project (which adds to budgets), game studio, etc. I’ve always wondered if the large cast for OP games is a deterrent.
-
@Zephray Yeah the fact that the dub was behind several arcs and that each arc introduces hundreds of characters, i figured that would have made it a nightmare to dub the games
-

That’s absolutely true. Casting for games would be a headache when you’re behind. That said, I was more thinking the minimum costs for dozens of actors to each come in and deliver a line or two, since the games tend to have dozens of characters show up, each with probably only an hour or less of recording work. OP just has so many characters. Paying for minimum time for 40 actors is a lot more than paying for 20, you know?
But I think I’ve had this discussion here before, and people have pointed out that other games have large casts too, like MHA. It just runs the budget up on dub production costs, y’know?
-
It’s worth mentioning the last MHA game literally didn’t even have a dub at launch. It was shadow dropped on a patch after a bunch of fan demand, fairly unique case.
-
Minor note of interest:
Watching through the...Voyage 7(?) episodes on FUNimation's site. Episode 861 is the first episode where the English credits following the episode say that the dub was produced by Crunchyroll instead of FUNimation.
-
Its kind of weird we aint got a date yet for the Voyage 8 episodes?
-
@G1Ravage On the Home Video release that have already started with Episode 720.

This is what I was saying earlier. They might push it back a month to stop it from conflicting with the film’s release. We’ll see next week, probably.
-
Just a few more days till Film Red!!! 🥳🥳🥳
-
Wow she is so incredible, really sad it won't be in the official version
-
Amazing🥰!!! Like I've said, the best we can hope for now is that Amalee's versions are available on the Bluray release.

I remember when Unlimited Adventure came out and it covered material that the dubbed show didn't get to yet and most of the cast changed by the time they actually got around to dubbing Water Seven and Enies Lobby a few years later. The only ones I recall staying are Franky and Lucci's VAs, but that's also because they were the biggest newcomers and the rest were pretty much inconsequential.
Some terminology used in the game changed for the dub too, like how Gear Second's name wasn't altered. That being said I still really can't get used to "Second Gear" to this day lol...
Especially now that the dub has progressed well beyond that point it just makes the game look like inconsistent and contradictory to the final product. With being so behind and having large casts in mind I get why they don't try dubbing the games anymore.
-
That said, within the next few months they’ll have casted the majority of anyone who would appear in the next game or two.
Any confirmations that they’re recording Wano yet? I don’t pay attention to VA Twitter as much as some of you. Didn’t even notice Bowling confirmed that he’s directing the film.
-
S13v8 is now fully available on the Microsoft store
