I think if I had to to put my finger on where these latest volumes could use improvement, it's the disconnect between the environmental lighting and the characters. The colourists are talking a big game with the rainbow lights over the Performance Floor and even the warm light of the exterior lanterns around the outside of the dome, glowing up the scenery in more complex ways than before. But they still seem to be extremely limited in what they can do with the actual character art if there's not shading or a screentone in the original art to justify a change.
This panel exemplifies it best:
Yellows and purples and reds along both the balcony in front of them and the roof behind them, but every living thing in the scene seems to be lit head on with plain white lights. I can't think of any way for none of these characters to be splashed with any of the colourful illumination. Only the outlines inside King's suit seem to be picking up any of the rave lights the scene wants to have.
The more ambitious lighting is a new and welcome development, but its implementation now feels like a half measure. Either give the colourists the freedom to bathe some characters in the coloured lights, or consider going back to the old way of just lighting whole scenes with a level ambient whiteness.
And if I'm honest I still, even after having the whole day to stew on it, think the red and white of the early version looks better.
They could still have made the rainbow lights work over the red, I'm certain, and then you'd still have a far more vibrant Performance Floor to work with after the fighting starts and the lights return to normal.

They've come a long way since volume 1, that's for sure. I've been looking back at some of the early volumes recently, and they can be so rough compared to what we get now. I'd be really interested to know how big the digital colouring team is and what its turnover rate has been in the decade or so since they started releasing these, or if it's all freelance or what. Which style shifts are the natural result of longtime colourists improving their technique and developing their personal style, and which ones are generational shifts as staff come and go?

I agree, and I can't deny something, while I ''complain'' about it has changed, this 3 volumes are a piece of art, the lightning as you said in the onigashima party might look odd, but I don't see any bad part in the rest. The Roger Laughed is 10/10

Yeah, I worry now I've come across a tad nitpicky after the Performance Floor looked so different from what I expected, but they absolutely nailed Oden's flashback and the rooftop scenes, and there's a decent range of interesting pallets for the halls inside the castle that'll be fantastic to watch burn down in future volumes. The Supernova and Emperors clashing is going to be something else.
And I get a little hit of dopamine every time I look at that first Onigashima establishing shot and the crew posing as a team with Jinbe at last. Overall, these volumes are still great.

I think Onigashima presentation, (the double page of chapter 978) is one of the best digital colored I've ever seen. This guys are pros and this pannels reprent why. The work they have done is amazing, do you think they rushed some part? I mean I don't remember the last time they released 3 volumes so fast.

I used the One Piece Wiki's page to comb through every character in the "Where's Waldo" color spread, and compared them to the anime and colored manga.
These are the ones I found most interesting:!
(Any characters I didn't go over don't have anything interesting going on. Their Waldo color scheme is either the same as an official Oda illustration, or the same as the anime.)
As you can see it's very inconsistent. Some character's schemes disregard the anime's to be in-line with the Where's Waldo color scheme. Some are the other way around. Some like Mizerka disregard both the anime and Where's Waldo color schemes. -

I think they've probably been under more pressure than normal over the last few years trying to set things up for the Vivre Cards and other promo things on top of just getting the volumes done. It also seems like Shueisha is trying to speed up colour releases, with series like Dragonball Super and Jojo part 8 seeing colour releases of volumes six months or less after the black and white ones. Chainsaw Man went from totally black and white to fully coloured within a year of it's last volume coming out.
One Piece's colour version is about as close to the black and white release as it's ever been (a four volume gap is about the same as what we saw as the colour release was reaching the end of Punk Hazard) but the Vivre Cards and the Wally collabs reveal how much back and forth there is behind the scenes on official colours, which is the kind of thing that can only be compounded by tight deadlines and extra work. It's hard not to think of the thing with Yamato's colours in the flashback as a version control issue that maybe could have been pinned down with another editorial pass.

I get the feeling they might ask Oda about what characters are the most relevant, and that he just tells them to "go crazy" in coloring the non-relevant characters if anything.
-
Wanda seems to have been cropped out of the photo with all the Straw Hats and Carrot welcoming Jinbe to the crew in the first page of chapter 977. Was this done for the scans only or for the actual colored manga books?
-

Also a strong possibility, especially looking at what Robby and Greg said on the topic in Greg's thread.
@Gecko:

Wanda was never cropped out of that page as much as she was cropped back in by one of the non-English Mangaplus releases. As I recall (though it's hard to find magazine raws this far after the fact) you could only ever see the very tip of her hat in the Jump scans and the English translation, and the release of the volume version (which I can confirm for both Japanese and English) is cropped even tighter so you can't even see that. The colour version is cropped to the same point as the Japanese digital black and white release.
-
Another fun fact: Hana's hair and kimono being blonde and green, even though the manga is meant to have them as brown and purple.
-
So, the Vivre Card databook showed an early design for Luffy's Beast Pirates disguise with a brown cape and white horns, among other changes:
While the final colour volume used a much more striking red design:
But for one panel on page 12 of chapter 980, Luffy's cape was left in its early brown colour (while his horns and gloves stay consistent with the final design):
Makes you wonder how late in the process the final colours for things are decided on, and how many iterations some parts of Onigashima had to go through.

Volume 99 Colored Version will release in 2nd Sep !
-
Dare I once again get my hopes up for one colour volume coming out alongside (the digital versions of) each black and white one, at least for a little while? Or will this be the last before another ten month hiatus?

While I would totally love to see that happening, it doesn't strike me as a smart business decision. Why by the new b&w volume when you could get the colored version? Even if there's people who prefer b&w over color or would by both, it's a bit of a financial gamble. Keeping both versions releases seperated by a few years seems the more efficient way to milk the audience.️
-
@Ivotas You've misunderstood. It would definitely go as you said if they tried to release colour versions of current volumes.
What I want to see is a consistent gap. Volume 103 comes out in black and white, volume 99 comes out in colour. 104 in black and white, 100 in colour, and so on and so forth. Just keeping that four-volume gap the way it is and having an idea of when to expect the next one rather than being in the dark until two weeks before a new volume drops.
-
@Captain-M Oh, that's what you meant. Sorry for misunderstanding. Yeah, that would definitely be great.
-
Some Volume 99 pictures!!
-
Thanks so much for the preview, Redon! I've been very, very much looking forward to this one.
-
Oh, totally forgot it's out. Of to by my copy then.^^
-
Not for a few more hours by the look of it, unless I need to start using a different ebook site. Redon would have his inside sources for these early pages.
-
Anyone know if v97 and v98 have been translated yet by anyone? They aren't on Nyaa

Nah, you're right. BookLive lists it at available on the 2nd of September. That's in 28 minutes for where I am. They seriously cannot expect me to wait this long!
-
@Ivotas I know the feeling. It's been the 2nd for 40 minutes already here! I think the clock ticks over for Japan sometime between 1 and 3 in the morning my time, always making these new releases just barely past my bedtime.
At least I get to wake up to something nice

They better not do be playing with my feelings at release it between 1 and 3 am Japanese time. I've fully prepared my heart to purchase it in 6 minutes. I don't think I could handle the disappointment.^^

I just looked for them, and either I'm blind or they haven't been translated. I've been thinking about translating this volume in the same way and working back to volume 97, just so if he releases between now and then I wouldn't be duplicating work. I'll update if I actually start on it.
-
I like that bounce-man doesn't have a red glow like in the anime. I wish it was the same with snake-man.
I wonder if we'll ever see the normal version of tank-man.
-
Thanks for the link Redon!
This is a gorgeous volume with a bunch of standout pages. The rooftop brawl, Onigashima's clear highlight, does not disappoint. I love the red and gold highlights on Kid's scrap mech after I'd been picturing it all in shades of metallic grey, really adds a bit of flair. The colour coding means you can even see one of the red shoulder pieces following him through the castle early in the volume. I can't say if that's unintentional or not, but it's still cool.
I'm curious about the rationale behind the purple flame clouds lifting the island. I'd pictured them more fiery, personally, but it's not like there's no precedent for this, with Momo's escape from the Punk Hazard garbage dump using these soft yellow/orange clouds.
I wonder if the colour-coding will stick when Momo finally gets to lift the island at the end of the battle.
We can also see Enma's auras remaining purple through this part of the battle despite the green on volume 102's cover. I'm hoping the plan is that it shifts to Zoro's personal colour when he finally takes full control of the sword during the King fight, which is one of those little ways the colour version has an opportunity to build on the black and white storytelling just a little.
-
Awesome Redon, thanks! : )
-
@ea77 Interesting, I wonder who did this scanlation for volumes 97 and 98? As always I'm super grateful to whoever did it. As far as I can tell, it is just the VIZ translation (with the spreads cut in half which is frustrating). This def makes it less important for me to do this for 97 and 98, but I may still work on volume 99 before it gets uploaded as split spreads.
-
vol 97 is now on nyaa, edited by anonymous

That's great news! I'm glad that he's okay! I can definitely be patient for these quality releases, now that I know that he's okay.
-
Hello everyone. I was reading past chapters and just found that in chapter 686, page 9 is missing and replaced by a jigsaw puzzle version of page 5. I believe that's in the raw volume 69 I downloaded from this thread some time ago.
Could anyone share that page for me or show me where to get it in decent quality? I'm speaking about the japanese version. Thank you! -
@MiHawkins Here's chapter 686 pages 8-9 from my archive. High quality, but I don't know how much imgur compresses things in its upload process.
-
@Captain-M good-enough quality! Thank you very much for such quick and satisfactory reply!!
-
There is this Bandai official One Piece card game that I wasn't paying much attention to. But what caught my interest is that the card uses anime screenshots and Digital Colored Manga panels.
In the english version of the Card decks, the talk bubbles have English translations, seemingly ripped straight from Viz.
As far as I know, this is the first time we've ever seen the Colored Manga officially English translated in any form. -
omg the art of this thing is a mess. Half of it is cut straight from the manga, some use stills from the anime - what an ugly hybrid. I wouldn't be surprised if they used pics of merchandise lol
-
I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't a huge fan of the card game's mix of cropped panels, anime stills and promo art. It's all over the place. Some of the original pieces they got done for it are pretty cool though.
And it is great to see some officially translated colour material either way. Feels like an inch closer to the actual release we've all been hoping for.
-
It's not just you. In the card game thread we are pretty much all expressing our dislike for the mashed artstyles.
I'm surprised to see English versions of the card game this early though. Nice to see the color manga with an official translaton. Even if it's in this messes up cash grab.^^
-
I'll echo what you've all been saying about the cards, and add that I find the cropped panels a little jarring when a speech bubble is cut off like on that Kid card on the bottom left. Still cool to see them translated officially in English in some form, odd as it is.
Regarding this latest batch of volumes, has anyone else noticed that at some point recently they started to color Law's hair dark blue like Oda does in the color spreads? I'm not sure exactly when they started doing that, but I've noticed it with these past three at least, and I think I recall it still being black earlier in Wano. Interesting to start now after so much time.
-
@IAmTheMilkman Pretty sure Law's hair has always been blue in the colour manga, all the way back to Sabaody. It's just the anime and for some reason volume 69's cover that made it black.
-
@Captain-M Huh! My bad, thanks for the callout. Just flipped through some of Dressrosa and yes, while his hair is overall darker there (sometimes just black), I guess they have always added at least a hint of blue to it. Maybe his blue cape and feathered boa are bringing out the blue in his hair a lot more now, haha.
-
@IAmTheMilkman All good. It definitely doesn't help that half the time the only hair you can see are the beard and sideburns, and they can be so small you can't even see the colour in them, just outlines. Plus the shadow of his hat darkening them further. Easy thing to miss.
-
I ask after a long time, but hopefully :)
Do you have a valid link to download volumes 94 and 95 in the original version, without image enlargements please?
-
@luffyking Are you requesting full scans of unmodified volumes? If so, please refrain from asking for material that is normally paid for so we can continue to avoid copyright take down requests.
-
@Cinder No, but i found it already :) Thank you
-
I think it's safe to assume that like everything else in the pixelated volume 105 promo video, these new panels use the digital colour manga as a base.
Here's hoping for an announcement about volume 100 soon...
