Man, voyage six. We’re so near the end I can start to taste it.
Welp, today marks 1 year since Season 10 Voyage 1 came out digitally.
Almost ten voyages in a year. Wow. Never thought that would happen.
:D let’s shoot for twelve next year haha
Crazy to think by this time next year we could possibly be in Wano
At least to me, they have more than made up for that awful drought after FIshman ISland , i never wouldve thought we would be not only done with Punk Hazard but through most of Dressrosa at this point.

Nah. Not possible unless they release more than one per month. But I feel pretty confident about being in WCI by this time next year!
3 DR sets left
3 Zou sets
8 WCI sets

Haven’t made up for it just yet. Haha. Even if they were putting out a set every two months during that two year drought, they’d still be further than we are now. So they definitely haven’t yet made up for lost time. Not to say that this monthly release schedule isn’t incredible, though.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I went to re-listen to it. RogerBase said that “soon funimation will be dropping news” about the 1000th episode celebration. So maybe we won’t have to wait 7-8 months to figure out what it is? Maybe they’ll just celebrate the whole year up to it by releasing the films one after another.
…nah. They’ve got to be so busy trying TJ stay ahead of this insane monthly schedule. I will be genuinely surprised if they find time to work on the films alongside the episodes and all their simuldubs, too. That’s like half a dozen movie projects. Need to stop getting my hopes up unnecessarily. Haha. Probably just giveaways and stuff.
I think they more so meant from a satisfaction stand point rather than literal episode numbers. We are close-ish on that front though. if we got a voyage every other month all this time the first WCI set wouldve just came out.
So do we get "liscening" announcements from funi still or does Toei just pump out the dubs through funi?
I don't think they've done a "we've licensed Season X and it's episodes ##-##" announcement in years. They've been announcing each Voyage shortly before (or as) they're released on VoD, although they did announce that Dressrosa was coming by the end of 2020.
Finally tweeted about it, they really know what we’re waiting for this time lol http://https://twitter.com/onepieceanime/status/1387864798407401478?s=21
The blog post says May 5th.
Funimation uses the immeasurable power of typos to finally not release something on a Tuesday.
Kaku will need to be recast come S11 V9. He has about 2 lines via transponder snail. Though its possible since its more implied than outright stated they wont even realize and just cast a random dude lol. Alex Organ stopped doing anime a few years ago to focus on theater. Kinda unique situations cuz theres 2 kinda easy immediate people you could cast. One being Chris Wehkamp, he's replaced him in almost every role where needed, and the other being Jerry Jewell as he played him in unlimited adventure. If I had to bet on it I'd say the former is more likely. Wehkamp would probably make a better voice match and isnt as prevalent as Jewell currently (although he's Bastille).
@Blake:

He actually has done voice work for Black Clover more recently
I’d be somewhat surprised if they can’t get a guy to record two lines for them, anyways.
Man, my rationing is so hardcore right now that I won’t watch the corazone episodes until July (because I’ll want to binge all seven at once while also watching one every Tuesday and Friday). Haha. Will definitely have to peak ahead and listen to his voice, though. Haven’t been looking forward to a voice this much in a minute.
I said that because it was my impression that he completely quit it all together. If what midod said is true though then yeah I suppose it’s possible. Probably also easier since everyone’s home recording now.

I’ve been meaning to mention this for a while, but you should start marking potential spoilers with a spoiler tag.
Or do those not exist anymore?
I honestly just don't know how, and like, I'm pretty sure at this point literally everyone here knows the story far beyond where the dub is at. Besides in speculatory discussion like this we'd have to mark practically everything as spoilers.
I’ve yet to hear from a dub-only watcher in the thousands of pages this thread and its predecessors have amounted.

What do y’all think the likely hood is that they’ll skip the early OP movies if they ever go back to dub them? I imagine they’ll be too hard to sell on their own since they’re so short and old. They’d have to sell them as combo packs, which for some reason just seems less likely than them tackling only the feature-length films as stand alone releases.
I don't think they'd go through the effort of doing the older movies if it weren't all of them. I doubt there'd be much more interest anyways, all the movies they havent licensed are at l10+ years old. People only care about 1 or 2 of them really, and even then thats relative. If they were going to do something that ultimately wouldnt be super succesful anyways they might as well get it all out of the way. I guess my real answer is that I dont see it happening at all lol.
If they do dub the older movies, I wouldn't be surprised if they either wait until they are back at the studio full time (COVID being a thing of the past that is) or they wait until they catch up closer to the sub episodes. Who knows, the older movies license/dub could be one of the things they announce when the Anime reaches episode 1000. Highly unlikely though, a guy can dream can't he!?

.
Hahaha well I only watch the dub, I’m only caught up with dressrosa
More dubbed content is good for the brand!
It certainly can’t hurt. More to advertise and more sales to grab are always good.

It might be that we should open a different thread for folks like you, then. As Blake said, I’m not sure we’d have a ton to talk about in this one if we had to avoid spoilers. Most of the talk is about the future episodes coming out.
I mean if I were dub only I’d be kinda bummed if I was getting spoiled, perhaps could make a thread ‘Funimation DVD speculation thread’ where we can discuss casting wishes, how future scenes will be adapted etc. Then this one to discuss the actual current releases?
How about we just count "spoilers" as events that happen over merely characters that show up (with some exceptions cuz the former and the latter can overlap). I dont really find things like "we hear kaku" to be a huge spoiler.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Toei uploaded a "recap" of the watch party which basically has all the content except the episodes. I find the need to take down the stream in the first place to be kinda silly since you can literally watch the sub episodes for free anyways, but better than it being gone completely. They cant do the same thing as the dressrosa one as if that was a special feature it'd spoil all the dub watchers
Oh I’ve been on this site for some time now. I’m used to some spoilers, so there’s no need for another thread if I’m the minority. Kaku was one of my favorite characters pre time skip, so I was definitely suprised to hear that he shows up again. I can agree that mentioning a character isn’t a a huge spoiler, but discussing and reflecting on big scenes that they’re in should be considered a spoiler. for example, saying crocodile comes back in impel down isn’t a spoiler, but saying that he fights as luffy’s ally could be.
Since you know now I must once again stress that its a VERY minor cameo, you dont even see him. I didn't even know about it before I researched it despite being caught up.
Apparently the Toei upload of the Watch Part Recap is region locked, but
isn't (in the UK at least). One day left! and man, I'm just preying they actually have all the episodes. I have a bad feeling.
Wasn't the phrasing on their latest ad, "Episodes will start to drop" or something similar? Doesn't inspire one with confidence.
Nah, that was just a way to cover up the mistake the last time. Both the toei and OP accounts on voyage 6 just say "arrive" and "launch".

All right, thankfully all there.

Okay so withholding most thoughts until I’m done, haven’t even gotten to the flashback yet, but I wanna go ahead and say Hack has been recast. Looking into it while I can not find a precise reason Garret Schneck wouldn’t reprise him, I can guess. I didn’t realize this before, but he is 80 years old.
I knew he was older but that came as a surprise, hopefully he’s just retired, no death has been reported. Now the reason is very much understandable, but let me tell you his replacement sounds so little like him that I legitimately thought the dude was an extra. The first time you hear him it’s a still where it’s ambiguous who’s speaking.
Now we don’t hear many lines from him but he’s just super generic. Like not even the same age range, not even a vague similarity. Now granted Hack isn’t actually old, he just looks that way, and once again the actual performance can’t be judge due to low line count, but it’s a super jarring change that really breaks immersion.
He also voices Zeff currently, so he’ll most likely need to be recast a second time.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
I promise to shut up about further thoughts until someone else speaks after this but heres a dub Cora clip, multiple people have already recognized him as Ray Chase.
Interesting. I’m playing the new Nier game (top four games ever), and he voices the protagonist after the time skip.

Weird that this arc has had so many recasts despite it all filming within half a year. It isn’t like these characters went on hiatus.
But I guess the smaller characters aren’t a big deal.
Mike Pollock is Doffy's dad too? Pleeease upload a clip when you can
Some bad news, I was unaware Tsuru had lines in this batch but I'm 90% sure she's been recast. The other 10% being the possibility of maybe them wanting her to sound younger since its a flashback? but she lost all the gruffness she had from when Pam Dougherty played her in adventure of neulandia. So this means big mom will likely be recast too.
I suppose I can go ahead and post a clip of homing, I usually like to post in order but lots of notable voices further in this time around lol.

That's amazing, really perfect casting all around this set. If you can, please tell us whenever you're finished what ADR directors did which episodes because I'm curious
….also Luffy's Red Hawk in 698 would be great too heehee
I'll get to the big moments eventually, just be patient lol.
As for directors, 694-697 is Bowling, 698-699 is Mcfarland, 699-702 is Bowling again, and 703-706 is Bowling AND Tyson Rinehart??? No idea if he's a full time or assitant, in the past it has not specified, but thats interesting. Whats ALSO interesting is the very low number of Kyle directed episodes we've seen.
Some general thoughts on voices and performances and such -
Kid Law: Super impressed by the performance, absolutely nailed it.
Corazon: At first I thought he sounded a tad young??? which i know is weird cuz the mans 26 lol, but I think the seiyuu just sounded a bit older. That being said I think any dub voice for him wouldve been initially jarring, but god damn this man can act. Despite his usual lower sleepier tone he is not at all afraid to play with his higher range a bit to deliver lines and it works really well.
Sengoku: So much more to hear here than Stampede. He sounds so different to then that I'm not even sure if its Philip Webber still? Its hard to tell though because again, how little dialogue he had. He's less deep and more old sounding, and all around a bit closer to Ed Blaylock. In no way has the same wisp he said, still not a 1:1 voice match by any stretch of the imagination, but it works well enough.
Homing: Mike Pollock feels so natural here and Im so happy he's part of the dub considering how many ads he did for the 4kids dub back in the day.
Kid Doffy: Good generally, a bit higher than i wouldve expected maybe and 1 or 2 odd line deliveries but works.
Laws dad: Okay I know I'm kinda stretching cuz rlly despite the importance to the characters history they arent huge roles but I think he sounds very cool :).
We don't actually get all of the Doffy flashback stuff here (though we get most of it), but we do get a brief kid Vergo line who is surprisingly voiced by Wes Frazier despite how they went in a different direction with Law.
However this set is mostly defined by the sheer quality of its content. The first episode or 2 are a tad slow but we quickly get a lot of highly anticipated moments, all topped off with the heart breaking flashback stuff. Extraordinarly strong episodes here. The pacing doesn't even really feel that slow for most of it.

Actually really surprised at the positive reception for Cora. Even people who normally dislike dubs are saying they like it.
@Blake:

I don’t remember how he sounded in Stampede, but I’m pretty certain that’s still Philip Weber
Lot to react to here, but I’m most disappointed to hear that Pam is potentially recast. Will definitely want to see that clip, or if you have an episode number for that, I can look through the episodes manually. I bought the set but won’t be watching it for a while because of rationing.
Kid Law sound great, and I can’t wait to hear how well Ray Chase acts.
She's like right at the beggining of 705.
Damn, yeah, I think you're right. That sounds different.
Cool that Mike pollack returned to do voices for the dub. In the 4kids dub he did that spell about the cursed fruits recaps and deer tales for recapping choppers boost forma.
Oh yeah I forgot, little interesting thing. At one point Corazon says "shit" which I'm pretty sure the dub usually isn't allowed to say. Granted it's already TV-14 so it doesn't effect the age rating or anything but wether ur allowed to say that is usually dependent on the show and dub, and it seemed one piece was on the "no" list. Who knows though now that I mention it y'all will probably point out like 50 instances where its been said lol.
That's a TV broadcast thing. They can say "shit" as long as it isn't on TV, which unfortunately it isn't.
The thing is though dub hasnt been on TV in forever, and its just being said now (unless im a big stupid dummy and there are other examples).
Man, so many recasts. I'm willing to be the higher rate of recasts has to do with them working on a faster schedule. They can't afford to wait for difficult to get people to record one or two lines.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Do you remember what episode Hack's new voice was in? And Sengoku?
I honestly don't know what you mean, every recast has been either an elderly actor or someone who's seemingly dissapeared from dubbing work completely. With this set we have… 2? Earlier on we had Hajrudin. Thats not ideal I suppose but certainely doesnt have to do with the schedule.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Hack was 697 I believe? and Sengoku was more or less in every flashback episode but I think he talks the most in 703.
