Actually, this isn't the first time I've seen this idea mentioned. I remember bringing it up in the thread earlier this year.

Fecal testing was proven more effective than blood or swab tests in March or April, so yeah the idea of testing sewage has been around for a while.
It's apparently been done to predict other viral outbreaks in the past.

The CDC has advised people not to travel for Thanksgiving, but I'm concerned that it's been drowned out of the news cycle by Trump's election shenanigans.

I think there are some people who would listen but may not be aware of the increased danger and recent spikes.

This virus has been running rampant around the world since January at the earliest if people are still being irresponsible after all this time they just don’t give a damn. Yes a good amount of the stupidity has to do with morons at the top controlling the influx of information and espousing propaganda. But as we’ve seen with other things like people continuing to live in Southern California despite the rash of wildfires or living in chronically flooded areas people just can’t help themselves.

To be fair, a lot of people living in fire or flood-prone areas really need government help to move elsewhere.
It's hard to want to leave your home for good, and by the time disaster strikes it's too late and your house is no longer saleable.

Yeah, but at least it helps make sure people are safe from the virus, so there's that.

Hopefully they can help convince more people that vaccines are safe in general. Especially since it's Democrat and Republican ex-presidents. This is good news in my opinion.

Regarding the vaccine, is there any news on side effects?
The side effects are apparently similar to flu vaccine side effects but potentially more unpleasant.
High fever, exhaustion, chills and muscle aches that could at worst keep you out of work for a day or two.
-
My general reaction to the flu vaccine is feeling "meh" for a couple days. I suppose that would mean the "meh" would evolve into an "ugh" or something.
-

Nani? Vaccines have side effects? I never knew this. Honestly, I never gotten a side effect from a vaccine before, I guess I'm just the rare one in regards to this. (I had a flu vaccine in October I believe and no side effects for example.)
-
All medicines can have a side effect. In a vaccine's case it's because you're essentially getting a very small, weakened dose of the illness and thus your body is acclimating to it.

A fair amount of Swedes are wary of being in the first round since the last vaccine given out for the swine flu gave people life long narcolepsy

In any case, there is a percentage of people who do not tolerate drugs and vaccines well. There are people with hidden diseases that a person does not even know about. In general, there are a lot of different subtleties. In addition, since the time of the swine flu, medicine has moved forward. In general, before vaccination, the "victim" must be carefully examined, at least a clinical blood test and temperature measured.

I've never had a blood test before getting a vaccine.
When I got the flu vaccine this year they just did it in the storage room at the back of the pharmacy. -
Although the possibility of a person having an unknown - for them - condition that generates a harsh side effect to certain drugs that's absolutely bullshit that one would need to run a clinical before vaccination.
It's true that's not advisable to take a vaccine in case of ferver, because well the body is already fighting something givin' it a buddy is not a good idea.–- Update From New Post Merge ---

I mean I won't be able to get the vacc anyway because of age and lack of a relevant pre-existing disease, but if I would I woudn't be overly worried about side effects.
What's more important is whether or not the vacc will prevent me from being infectious myself if I happen to catch the real thing. If it doesn't and it "just" lets me endure the infection with milder or no symptoms, then I have no rush to get it myself.
However, if it actually lowers the virus load in my nose/throat I want the vacc right now, no questions asked. Pump it in every orifice please. -

Today's COVID-specific news from https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/2020/12/07/day-1418/
Day 1418: "Nullifying the will of the people."
! Biden selected California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to serve as his secretary of Health and Human Services. If confirmed, Becerra would be the first Latino to run the health department. Biden’s transition team also announced other key public health roles, including Dr. Vivek Murthy to be surgeon general, Rochelle Walensky to be director of the CDC, Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith to be COVID-19 Equity Task Force co-chair, Dr. Anthony Fauci to be chief medical adviser on COVID-19, Jeff Zients to be counselor to the president and coordinator of the COVID-19 response, and Natalie Quillian to be deputy coordinator of the COVID-19 response. (New York Times / CBS News / Politico / NPR)
! Rudy Giuliani tested positive for the coronavirus and has been admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center. Giuliani, who has frequently appeared maskless, traveled to Michigan, Arizona, and Georgia last week and met indoors with state legislators to advance Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud. The Arizona Legislature, meanwhile, will close for a week “out of an abundance of caution” after Giuliani possibly exposed several Republican lawmakers to COVID-19. And public health officials in Michigan ordered several state lawmakers to begin quarantining after they were in recent, close contact with Giuliani. “Get better soon Rudy, we will carry on!!!” Trump tweeted. (New York Times / NBC News / Arizona Republic / Washington Post / CNN)
! * Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar promised that every American will be able to get a coronavirus vaccine by the second quarter of 2021. The FDA, however, hasn’t authorized a vaccine, yet. (Axios)- Trump plans to hold a “vaccine summit” at the White House on Tuesday. Both Pfizer and Moderna – the two drug manufacturers likely to receive emergency authorizations for a COVID-19 vaccine – however rejected the invitations. (STAT News / Bloomberg)
- The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee invited an anti-vaccine doctor who promoted hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment to testify. Dr. Jane Orient is the executive director of a group that opposes government involvement in medicine and views federal vaccine mandates as a violation of human rights. (New York Times)

Trump for reasons opted not to purchase extra doses of the vaccine from Pfizer
Also apparently they’re snubbing a summit being held by the administration. I’m sure all those conspiracy theories regarding the virus and unnecessary shade at the Pfizer had nothing to do with this.

I wore a face mask for the first time yesterday, and not to be a karen but i'm amazed you guys manage to wear them everyday. I was constantly gasping for air mid-conversation, i could barely get out a sentance before drawing a a big breath and even while sitting i felt like i was being choked. Working in those things must be a special kind of hell

you get used to it, it was really unbearable in the summer though.

Yeah, while I do think the level of just how sucky it is depends on the type of mask you're using (and also on whether or not you have breathing issues or some such), it's at best rather uncomfortable and irritating. Even by the time I'm done with a grocery trip, I'm feeling quite "done" and am grateful to be able to take it off once I reach my car. I've found myself thinking many times "My god it would suck to have to wear that all day", haha. (One issue I personally have is that I breathe mostly through my mouth as opposed my nose and always have, so I always feel my own breath all over the lower half of my face with my mask on. It's actually kinda nice in the winter, tho, when it's cold!)
And don't get me wrong, I totally understand why we're wearing them and am not trying to say "We shouldn't have to!" or anything like that. Wearing them beats potentially giving someone COVID unintentionally, of course. It just doesn't make having them on your face any more fun.
-

Look into getting KF94 masks.
They're designed to let out CO2 so it's not as bad as the cheap polyester surgical masks. -

It just becomes part of your routine, I guess. (and I use cloth ones my mother sewed, so maybe I'm getting a different experience) But it DOES add an extra stress on your everyday life, so things that normally would be done without end up taking more energy. I get more exhausted from a 7-hour shift as opposed to the 9-hour ones I could knock out of the park. And there's also the social stress of it all, i.e. me and everyone else fucking mumbles.
-
I'm just fine with the mask, both the cloth made one and the surgical ones, don't have no problem walking my dog 3-5km or doing the same on the beach esplanade.
But now that summer is arriving, I better start walking with a spare one because they are bound to became moist rather fast. -
Dear god that's pathetic.

I really don't understand what Trump is doing any more.
Yesterday he said this:"Plus, you develop immunity over a period of time. I hear we’re close to 15%, I’m hearing that, and that is terrific, that’s a very powerful vaccine in itself."
I'm starting to wonder if the goal all along really has been to kill as many people as possible.
-

Were those comments made in the same period that he allegedly stated that catching it was good?
-

I haven't actually watched the vaccine summit but probably.
He's been leaning in that direction all along. -

I don't have real issues with the mask, but what I did notice is that they conditioned my behavior quite a bit. I talk less when I'm wearing one, and if I wear my glasses on top (because they also offer some protection) I noticed that my breathing is shallow because I want to prevent them from fogging too much. This is really the biggest annoyance by far, but thankfully I don't need to wear glasses all the time.
I can only speak for myself obviously, but I think I found a acceptable balance:
-
No mask when I meet outdoors with really close RL friends + 2 meters distance (most things happen online anyway, but sometimes you do want to take a walk at least), and of course no mask in my household.
-
I carry a pack of surgical masks when I meet people indoors I know well or people I'm in contact with regularly (but not super close, like household-level close). They're really cheap so there is no desperate need to be conservative with them as well.
-
I use FFP2 masks in every other scenario, especially public transport / mart. I'm fine with them in a deskjob scenario, but honestly I don't want to imagine how it must be for those working in a kitchen. Unbearable for sure.

Partly refusal to believe that COVID exists or is as bad as they say it is, partly all the Anti-Vaxxers. Idiots.
I'm not happy with my state right now, either. Massachusetts numbers are like skyrocketing. We were supposed to be the smart ones, but people have gotten way too complacent. I can see this working in retail. People are (usually) wearing their masks, but they don't keep distances, they go into a store to "just look around", and they are using way too much cash. NOT safe protocol!!!

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/06/just-50-americans-plan-get-covid-19-vaccine-here-s-how-win-over-restThere’s a thread on a shitposting NFL twitter account that made a thread surrounding the idea of a vaccine and of course there are some skeptics some of whom don’t seem to be right leaning insisting they won’t take the virus because of things like 4 people contracting Bell’s Palsy. Some of them actually arguing they’d sooner die than risk suffering facial paralysis even temporary or any other potential side effects. The one that set me off among the other stupid takes was a guy who made the argument essentially of “if you get vaccinated you shouldn’t care about people who aren’t” apparently not aware of the why having stupid people or the kids of stupid running around without being inoculated is a problem even for those who are vaccinated.
Point being stupidity is a feature for right leaning types and something if a bug for left leaning types.

I’ve largely not kept on the up and up but we’re not doing too much better in New York…..better than some places like Florida and Georgia of course but still too many instances of people being cute with these religious gatherings which of course the Supreme Court rules in favor of and these parties that others are having.

I mean, what the hell do you want? This is literally a ticket to get things at least somewhat back to normal. COVID isn't going to magically vanish and it's suddenly like it was last year. Suck it up, and get the shot, you stupid dicks.
