After Eventhubs and its toxic attitude, it sure is nice to mosey on over to Apforums and see people being cool or funny and not losing their minds and being mean spirited. So many people talking about how trash BONUS characters are in a game so loaded with characters and content. Sure, people are paying for the bonus, but it's you're choice to buy or not buy. There are certain characters that I would be more excited for (and trust, I was certainly let down by Steve) but ANY character is just gravy at this point. You can literally play as any character from 64 to Smash 4 and people are still complaining.
-
Well I'm on the train that this is the dumbest "character" in the world, visually grating in every possible respect, and can't think of anyone who would be less fitting. It's always disappointing to think "yeah I'm never touching that." But sure, I guess it's going to float many people's boats.
-
Oh yeah, it hideously clashes with everything. Even Mr. Game & Watch, a 2d being, is more natural.
But I'm done fighting reality.

It doesn't take much reading between the lines to interpret Sakurai's comments into suggesting Nintendo basically twisted his arm into including him.
-
Twist his arm even more for Goku or Luffy.
-
If this was announced back when Ultimate was first revealed, I may have been more upset about it.
But now, after getting so many dream characters in this game (especially Banjo), I'm totally fine with it. Minecraft is such an enormous and influential game that it makes sense to be represented in Smash, and while I know a lot of people are pissed about this inclusion (which I find kind of hilarious, honestly), I've seen a lot of people really excited as well, especially the younger crowd. His moveset looks weird and creative enough that I'm excited to learn more about it and see how he plays (you can actually build?! What?!) and I like how the stage incorporates different biomes and locations.
Sure, he's visually jarring compared to all the other characters, but it's honestly so weird I kind of like it. I actually lost my shit a little when it did the dramatic zoom in on him activating his final smash because it just seemed so surreal to me.
Besides, we still have four more characters to go if you felt let down by this choice.
-
He looks like the most unique character yet, which I appreciate. I don't care for Minecraft, but it absolutely deserves the rep here and I'm glad to see it.*
-
I'm never gonna get my grass starter Pokemon am I?
-
I feel like Challenger Pack 8 trailer will start with another shadow approaching Donky Kong's house.
-
Ok.
I'm sure other people wanted this and it looks unique. I'll give it a shot. not what I wanted tho by a long shot.
Oh well, there are 4 more slots and 4 more characters I wanted.
Geno, Dixie, Shantae, Sora.
Lets go.
-
There's 4 more characters left so I'm glad that's out of the way
-
Geno, Dixie, Shantae, Sora.
I wouldn't hope for two 3rd Party characters from the same company. (Specially if same said company has already gave 2 of their characters already.)
-
Since Disgaea 6 will be a switch-exclusive, I sense a sword-wielding demon in Smash's future.

I personally love how he looks completely photoshopped in in the mural artwork.
-
wait wait wait, is that four different characters? Or just four different skins of the character?
-

Different skins, just like Hero/Bowser Jr.
-
Even if I don't like them visualy, the smash team just puts so much personality in each character that I can't help but feel impressed.
-
Took a look at the video and I'm probably gonna try it out, damnit. I have a soft spot for characters that hit hard to make up for other shortcomings (slow, bad reach, low jumps)
I played a little bit of Min Min and then didn't touch the game again. Probably gonna pick it back up for Steve
-
I never played Minecraft so I didn't care about that character but I must say I was very impressed by the work they did. The Mojang team must be beyond happy.
-
It doesn't take much reading between the lines to interpret Sakurai's comments into suggesting Nintendo basically twisted his arm into including him.
If Minecraft had truly been forced upon the team at the protest of Sakurai it'd have been easy to just knock off a generic fighter with the Steve template and call it a day, but the absolutely insane dedication shown here-including by Sakurai himself- doesn't really speak to that. More that the team has gone wild with the unique opportunities coming with this brand.
Also, at this point I think they're knowingly playing up the established "beleaguered Sakurai" angle; Parasocial relationships and all that.
-
I don’t think the characters getting a lot of dedicated attention and detail says anything about how Sakurai feels about the character, otherwise that would imply he personally super cares about every single character given it has been a constant for smash characters to get a lot of love.
I think that’s just his personal approach to game direction with this game, and wanting to decline Minecraft was probably also because of this: he knew that to do a Minecraft character justice he would need building and crafting mechanics that would be challenging for the team to do properly.
In terms of what he really cares for, you can tell that someone like Terry Bogard was far closer to a character he thoroughly was into. I don’t think he dislikes Steve or Minecraft, but I don’t think it does as much for him as Terry did. That presentation is the most love I’ve seen go into a DLC character. -
When I saw the reveal Steve didn't look to fit my style.
Apparently I was wrong because Steve is really fun. -

I think there's hope for several more Microsoft IPs.
Square Enix just seems incredibly stuck up and uncooperative.

What other IPs Microsoft have left?
Master Chief and the guy from Halo?

Doomguy, Battletoads, something from Elder Scrolls, Commander Keen, Dangerous Dave, something from Fallout…
I think I'd die laughing if Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement somehow made its way into a Smash character reveal trailer.
-
Hey!
Is there a group of people here who play SSBU somewhat frequently? I'm always looking for more friends to play with in arenas.
-
I do! Finally got a lan adapter a few weeks back.
Friend code: SW-5397-2122-6813

Fucking sepheroth joined smash
holy fucking shit
-
Hey, FFVII will get a Third Music Track.
-
Amazing. They went nuts with this trailer. The fact that such reveal wasn't leaked is fascinating.
I didn't expect that and I'm hyped. I hope we get a lot of FF musics in this pack (not just FF7 would be fantastic).
I still want Dante the most to have Bayonetta and him in the same game but that addition make the season 2 pass almost worth it for me. I'm still going to wait until the next reveal to be sure.
-
Definitely out of left field, and I really hope we get more music this time. Otherwise I just think it's okay. I don't think FF7 needed more Smash love, at least not before other unrepresented franchises or other 1-character franchises (would have much preferred Dr. Robotnik for example).
That said I'm relieved it isn't one of the many, MANY characters people have been frothing over that I dislike. And unlike Steve, I'm at least curious to try Sephiroth.
-
I love his in game model!
-
I have to admit, I didn't expect him to be in the game. I actually want to try Sephiroth out.
-

-
Well, he's looking fabulous as always.
I'm still a little miffed that Amaterasu from Okami still isn't there.
-
Edgey mcEdgelord eh? Well, I DID like playing him in Dissidia… so very very tired of FF7 being the only FF game that ever gets rep though.
I'm still a little miffed that Amaterasu from Okami still isn't there.
Fantastic as Okami is, it was a flop. Critically acclaimed, but still a flop that killed it's studio.
Capcom doesn't seem to have any idea what to do with it either. But I think we'd be more likely to see Megaman X, Chun Li, Arthur and Firebrand, Viewtiful Joe, Strider, or a Monster Hunter rep before we saw Ammy. (I don't think Phoenix Wright would make it before her… he was already a wonky joke choice in Marvel vs Capcom)
I don't think Dante or a Resident Evil character would ever make it in but hell Bayonetta and Joker did and Snake is a legacy character so...
-
There will be a presentation on the 17th from Sakurai to go over his moveset. So, probably release early during christmas week? iirc this is a very similar timeline to Cloud five years ago (also released around christmas).
Interested in seeing what bloodbath goes down from the new mii costumes. I'm glad I'm not too invested in Geno or Sora, I could see them getting costumes to go along a square enix character pack.
-
I will never forgive Dissidia for not including Balthier.

And yet they've re-released it on the PS3, the PS4, the Wii, the Wii U, AND the Switch. Why would they keep doing that if it wasn't so beloved?
If I can't have Ammy I wouldn't say no to Chun-Li.

This post aged poorly. :ninja:

Actually it was about having two 3rd Party characters in this Fighter Pass.

I thought God Hand killed their studio.
-
I love his in game model!
It's real neat! I've never liked the hyper-real iterations of the FFVII characters, so this has just enough cartoonyness for me
-
I have zero nostalgia for FFVII so this is another 'Ken and Ryu' situation where I didn't bother with the first char so won't really with the second.
If this means more music tracks from FF I'll be interested in that.
For me any hope of getting Rex has gone. I can't see Sora getting in now since we have 3 Square reps. Nor Lara Croft or a Nier rep. (Not that I expected these. Just probably woulda been more interesting)
-
I just want Sephiroth's final smash to be Supernova.
-
The great thing about Sephiroth being in is even if you think he's the most annoyingly overrated bishie ever, you can now beat him up using Luigi or Donkey Kong
-
I’m surprisingly ok with him. Steve broke all that could have bothered me, it needs to be something even more bothersome for me to care.
The trailer was good, loved Mario’s “death”, but I was annoyed that the generic doomsday villain that killed everyone except Kirby now was soloed by sephiroth. We haven’t got this kind of reveal video since Banjo&Kazooie, right? Terry’s was the retro one, min min and Byleth was in their game style, and Steve was practically in-game only.
-
And yet they've re-released it on the PS3, the PS4, the Wii, the Wii U, AND the Switch. Why would they keep doing that if it wasn't so beloved?
Because at this point forward-porting it is easy and makes them money. It's not like they've remastered the assets or fixed anything or made the opening cutscene skippable or made use of a given console's special features or added new bonuses… (like they did for the Wii controls) its just direct ports. (They put a tiny bit of work into making HD for the PS3, but didn't truly upscale the textures or anything so its looking its age now.) Much like the umpteen re-releases of MegaMan. It's fairly cheap to re-release it, it has some fans,, there's no reason not to.
Heck, Okami on the PS4 doesn't even have new trophies, it shares the same list as PS3 so you can't even plat it a second time.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
I thought God Hand killed their studio.
Nope, they were already done before God Hand was released… is a large part of the reason that game was so unpolished and unfinished. They put it out just top put it out before their doors closed, but even reviews at the time taked about how it was a shame it was Clover's last game.
Its crazy because Okami was super praised and even won several game of the year awards but it was just... too niche. Maybe if it had looked realistic instead of like a Japanese painting it would have done better? But then it would have also aged super badly..
-
Part of what makes Okami amazing is BECAUSE it looks like a Japanese painting. And a big part of the gameplay is ink drawing, so it wouldn't have worked with another style.
Because it's so stylized it can last longer too, as looking "realistic" was never its thing.
-
I know that, and you know that, but to the average player it just looks weird. Tons of awards and praise didn't translate to sales.
Also, while the stylization means it hasn't aged like other PS2 era games, so it was still pretty solid on the PS3, it HAS aged. I started playing it again recently for the first time in a while (Ghost of Tsushima got me in the mood for it) and a lot of the textures, even for being in painted style, don't hold up great in HD or on a bigger screen. Some of them are really jaggy or faded, or look fuzzy like they're jpegs that got sized up and blurred… also a lot of times the brush stroke inlines ont eh background would get positively huge compared to the characters and would look weird. You can do the same effect but still have it look better on modern hardware. (Also more plants and particle effects and general filling out the landscape so its not all flat areas surrounded by mountains)
Most of the characters still look okay because they were textured with flat colors, but the backgrounds... not so good.
Playing Ghost of Tsushima I just kept thinking "man, imagine if Okami had this."
