World of Light was pretty fun overall. There are a loooot of spirits to fight but the most tedious part is the loading screens. Towards end game most fights are doable in 10 seconds or so, even on hard mode. I had no idea that so many spirits found on the Spirit Board are also in WoL. I may have wasted hours of time, gold, SP, and rematch items on Spirit Board when I didn't really have to. Now I have plenty of dupes of 3 and 4 star spirits that I guess I can explore with. Online isn't too bad from my experience. Out of my 80 or so quickplays, maybe 10 of them have been shaky to bad connection wise. My most fun match so far was a loss. I was Isabelle against a pretty good Villager in that side-scrolling classic Mario level. I was spamming the shit out of Isabelle's Down B because he was too good at avoiding the fishing pole. So he pretty much had to move into the bombs or die from the level. I felt scummy as hell but it was fun almost winning after 6 or so minutes. And the match was overly calm since neither Villager or Isabelle really make any noise.

Sure would be great if the Ninten and Paula fights weren't "someone paired with a Ness that spams PK Fire and Freeze and also gets PK Starstorm randomly".

You mean the average Ness player?

Checkmate fake mother fans, Ness doesn't even have pk freeze!

OK, seriously, fuck that Pauline battle.

If you still haven't beaten it yet, there's actually a really easy way you can cheese it using a staff

I had to look up how to unlock the Mii Brawler in WoL. How I'm supposed to know which time I have to set that damn clock?

I figured. That one that didn't tell you some prophecy nonsense. Started to detest them so fast for some reason…

I wanna get them all, but probably not max out all of them. When you factor in how many Legend spirits there are, that could take months to do.
Anyway, I've got about 125 left to get.
-
I maxed out the 4* ones, the rest I'll be leaving it to doc Lewis.

I dislike the smash Reddit so very much. Competitive players drama, the same complaints over and over, week old memes, and a relevant post out of each 30.
-
Got everyone in WoL, but I haven't finished it just yet. Been doing some side challenges, and so far, things are definitely more manageable than Smash 4.
i never want to see master core again -
Any tips for a noob hunting 4* spirits on the spirit board or world of light? I've gotten a small number of 3* ones but I have no luck on any 4* yet.

Well for the Spirit Board, you just need some patience, a little luck, and all the reshuffling board items you can get your hands on. You gotta clear 10 of them for a challenge, so if you see any, you hone in and try to beat it ASAP.
I think the last one I tried was Donkey Kong and Lady, which is a WORSE version of Pauline's. Peach can't die (it's easy for her to because it's stamina) and DK has like 250 HP. All on 75 m. >_>
-
Get a few in world of ligth first. Facing Pauline or Geno in the board would be maddening. Getting to retry them without having to keep a stock of the rematch item is invaluable.
The skill tree is like having like 20 extra secondary spirits equipped, and it only applies in world of ligth.
All of the evolving lvl3 spirits, and a fair number of the lvl2 ones, become lvl4, take advantage of that.
Remember that characters and spirits from the same series (only primary) give you a boost on your numbers.
Try not only to counter the battle, but also to play to your strengths and of your chosen character. Like a super armor Pikachu is just a novelty, super armor Ike is a monster.
-
The challenge where you have to beat advanced battles thrice with no spirits is tricky, but mercifully it's only for that level.
i'd break my controller if i had to do legendary battles with no spirits.
-
Also, don't forget battle items and don't be afraid to use the rematch board item.
-

1. There's a skill to equip more secondary spirits?
2. What do you mean by super armor? I usually main Fox and Captain Falcon. -
1. There's a skill to equip more secondary spirits?
No, not literally. The skill tree in WoL just gives you extra skills like support spirits would. But again, it's only in WoL.
2. What do you mean by super armor? I usually main Fox and Captain Falcon.
Super Armor is a skill you can get from certain support spirits that makes you harder to flinch and be thrown, but at the cost of slowing you down. It's fairly rare, but it shouldn't take you too long to get it.

Okay so I got the game for Christmas, and I'm officially obsessed with spirits. Like gotta catch them all obsessed. I want to level them all up too.
I love this game.
I was surprised how addicted I got to the spirit board. Unfortunately I found out that a bunch of difficult spirits I burned rematches on could be found in WoL. I ended up skipping Pauline in WoL since she's found pretty early on, eventually forgot about her, then was stubborn in Spirit Board until I beat her. I felt stupid when I realized how much time I wasted but it was satisfying at the time lol.
Another guilty pleasure I have is the horrible All Star mode. It gets way too hard very quickly and if you kill them too fast the game lags a little bit. My high score is 70 with Ganondorf.
! It loops around after you beat them all so there's no end to it. Good thing there's no mural challenge for it.
-
Okay next question, what do the sweat drops mean when I'm done training someone at Doc's gym?
-
??? I don't know what you are talking about.
In the training some spirits have red arrows pointing up, and some blue arrows pointing down, and some none, red trains faster, blue slower.
-

I just pulled some spirits from the gym and they have what look like water/sweat drops in the corner of their icon. I have no idea what they are.
-
I never bothered to look up those arrows in the tutorial. Are they explained there?
-
No idea, spirits don't sweat.
They have their wisping aura whenever you see the complete image, if you see it here, then that's it: https://www.smashbros.com/en_US/howtoplay/spirits.html
There is the progress bar that is blue bellow them when they are training.
There is the favorite mark that you can place with Y-button to avoid dissimising your favorites, but that is yellow with little stars.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
It is never explained, I just put someone with red arrow and someone with blue arrow of the same rarity, and saw the red arrow one level up faster.

So, Spirit Board. I find simply impossible to not hit the shield of anything Advanced-level and above (and I always hit just the border of it). So whenever I am trying to free a Legend, I know it is impossible to do it and I don't even try…
... so I just close my eyes and shoot at a random moment...
... so far, I am yet to fail to free a Legend at the first shot. I don't know how it works, but it works. I would be a great sniper if I was blind. -

You can buy as many as you can until your gold runs out. I wouldn't recommend the spacers. Sometimes at the fast speed it makes it worse to look at.

That whole capture mechanic is the reason why I don't play spirit board, now that I've finished the challenges. It may be the worst designed element in the entire game. It's one thing for you to lose and be punished by not being able to rematch immediately without an item - which is already something I take issue with since you don't get to learn the matchups or consistently repeat challenges you enjoyed - but if you win you might just be punished in the same way, too? Winning might even lead to worse punishment, since you could waste items and SP and still not nab the spirit. They don't make it easy to replenish those resources, either. Once you've beaten WoL and finished the challenge board, you have to grind out SP from Toadette's ruins (which can only be done every few hours and might not even get you a lot) or gimp yourself in spirit fights with weaker spirits to earn marginal amounts of the stuff. If you do the latter on the spirit board, then you're probably wasting a good amount of SP trying to get spirits hard-won in battles you made harder for yourself. The items you can get from winning battles, game modes or the shop, but they're always random and shopping requires either gold or more SP. Gold is easier to get than SP - especially if you have nintendo online - but is still a resource you can blow through and have trouble replacing (and honestly not worth spending on items if you still have music and mii costumes to unlock).
So if you're down on resources to begin with, you might as well not even play any spirits above novice, since it could end up in a big waste of time and effort. If you have the resources, you have to make decisions on where you want to spend them, which discourages going after spirits you don't recognize. And even when you have the resources and find a spirit that you want, there's still a chance that it ends up in a big waste of time and effort, plus a depletion of those resources. If you manage to win and actually get the spirit? Congratulations, you get one sticker.

It… it really is in our hearts!

When I play games, I have a problem with using items I can't get freely at any time. I always think I will need them more later and end up never using. I suppose with the slugglish shields I shouldn't have this mindset since you can still have many of them, but still I just leave them there.

The fact the damage you cause to the shield is carried over to the next fight makes me fine with the way it is designed. I mean, it is an alternate way to get those spirits instead of battling them on WoL - where you can just defeat the character and that's it -, like a shortcut so you don't have to explore the huge WoL to get there, so I'm fine with the drawbacks.
Usually I get frustrated easily, but with Spirit Board, since I think it is fair, I am just "damn, you! Next time I get you" whenever I hit a shield. I don't even bother forcing rematches and wait for them to naturally appear again… I suppose if I was using items/using points for extra shots, I would be annoyed seeing my resources being depleted, but since not... And yet I am so addicted to SB right now I need to force myself to play WoL once in a while. -

You should only need sluggish shields and shield spacers on Legends and some Aces. After playing through WoL and a lot of Classic Mode, I managed to accumulate maybe about 20 of each. That should be enough to handle all the Legends and Aces.
-
So that's the reason why WoL+ exists.
-
WoL+ is the way to get tons of SP, It was more of a chore than "fun". I agree, catching the spirit with the minigun game was just meh, like I had to face a harder battle than regular WoL, and then I have to do this as well?
Once scarcity ends it is whatever.

There's a good ~500-600 challenges you can only access from the board. Granted you can buy those spirits in the shop or earn them in single player modes, as a person interested in the gameplay part of the game it does cheese me that they're each difficult to access, retry and complete, and then through the magic of the spirit capture system you might end up having to access, retry and complete the whole thing again.
-
The thing is that while shtty, the trully hard ones are like 5-10, and as long as you don't get them, there is higher chances of seeing them again.
I've been done with it for a week, and I'm not going to miss that minigame.
The fun part of spirits was to sit down and watch and say "oh, so Mario, Peach, Bowser are themselves, Kirby is mallow, and Sheik with a super scope is Geno, neat!"
-
After a few more quickplay battles as Luigi I finally reached the 200 mark.
All 124 challenges done without using hammers and 1301 spirits (all but Partner-Pikachu)
My third 100% WoL run was also a huge success, with Olimar even clearing the final boss by himself without a healing spirit.
All the pikmin aerials deal ridiculous amounts of damage. How high would you rate the chances of a Nintendo Direct in early January announcing a Piranha Plant release date and/or showing us footage of Joker?
-
I have the feeling that Joker won't be number 71, keyword is "first announced", and taking the release schedule as "every 2 months until febraury 2020" things could shift around.
Last Sakurai interview said that he wasn't in a playable state, and that it wasn't certain that all of them would get such a video.

Maybe I'm a masochist, but Spirit Board isn't all that bad. Either way, I would strongly recommend doing a runthrough of WoL first since a good chunk of the Legend spirits are there. After that, just go after the ones without the check mark.
-
Thanks, I missed that interview.
If we get more first party characters, I'm hoping for Porky, Louie or our long overdue Rhythm Heaven rep.
-
Welp. Barely 2 hours onto quick play and I can see why people are trashing this online so much.
This GSP system is terrible.
-
Yeah, I'd say start off by getting as many spirits as you can from WoL, while also getting some easy ones from the Spirit Board and buying some from shops since some of them are exclusive to there. After that, you can devote full time to Spirit Board and summoning.
At least that's what I did.
-

The announcement vid announced that this was Challenger Pack 1, so it's probably coming first.
Then again, who said the challenger packs go from 1-5?

Okay next question, what do the sweat drops mean when I'm done training someone at Doc's gym?
When you pull someone from the gym (maybe also dojos/exploring?), they are in a "tired" state for a little while during which you can't send them back out for activities. That's what the sweat drops mean. I'm surprised nobody else knew what you were talking about since it's something fairly basic. Also pointless… like many things they cobbled together, it serves no purpose other than to arbitrarily punish you -- in this case, for changing your mind.
The shield minigame is still the worst, though. This coming from someone with more shield spacers and sluggish shields than I know what to do with, and I have a 90%+ accuracy rate on legendaries without even using items. But even the extra 10 seconds I spend after the battle is enough to piss me off. There's no reason to add a second layer of bullshit when you've already overcome the initial challenge. And it's even more awful when you consider that everything common is piss-easy to hit, but the stuff you really had to work hard to earn is the stuff where you're most likely to miss your shot. I can understand getting a slight rush from hitting a hard shot, but if you value that more than your time and effort then you have... interesting priorities. It should have been implemented as a stand-alone thing like in previous games. You pay money and a random spirit appears, but you have to shoot it to acquire it. Here it's justified because you're getting it not as a reward but for a small entry fee.
Anyway I have all Spirits now, excluding the Let's Go ones, and it's like whatever. There's too many of them to appreciate them all individually, most of them are completely trash-level useless, and it's not very satisfying to admire them in the gallery the way trophies were. I also completed all the challenges. I used hammers for the last several online ones because even when the lag is bearable the system is still intolerable bullshit and makes me a worse player due to adopting bad habits for the circumstances (kind of how playing against CPUs will make you awful against humans).

There really needed to be a practice mode for the "spirit shooting" minigame to give players a few minutes to warm up their twitch reflexes.
Overall, the game has far too much grinding and incorporates a weird number of free-to-play mechanics.
