Hiatus x Hiatus III: Goodnight, Sweet Princes

-
…And suddenly a Leorio Chapter
Actually thats probably less likely than a genre changing event
-
Leorio is in the fucking boat, so we are kinda owed a chapter (or half of the arc) of him.

Are we though :ninja:
-
Given the fact that we're currently on a boat full of characters no one actually gives a shit about, I'd take the super sad twist that will change the manga industry with a barrel of salt. Nothing will make the audience sad over anyone dying on this fucking boat short of Kurapika or Leorio and even then I don't see that as being bold and revolutionary as much as Togashi getting bored again and throwing in a random death to spice things up.
Last time he said something like this we had Hisoka vs Chrollo and 2 Spiders deaths.
Hisoka vs Chrollo had a very unsatisfying resolution and the two spider deaths were nothing but a waste of the characters.
-
Togashi should it have reduced the numbers of princes by 9 at most..
18 is just too much to handle it.
-

I agree that the fight's resolution sucked, but I couldn't care less about the death of these two characters. I'm actually glad that the Spiders are dying
-
The resolution was too diplomatic. And an asspull, but never mind. In retrospect, the suspense in that fight was mostly caused by outside factors, seeing how you didn't know what Togashi plans to do with the manga, if anything at all.
Never got that attached to any of the Spiders, honestly.

I don't have trouble keeping track of it at all.

I'm hot love the Spiders.

-
It's not that hard when you can easily catch up once every return from hiatus.
I personally just skim through this and a few chapters here and there to remember new characters and i'm all set.
-
None of the characters matter and they're all gonna die because of a bomb on the ship or something in like a volume or two.
-
Exactly it's not that it's physically impossible to keep track of the characters, but that they don't have anywhere enough development or interest to cause me to do it naturally by just reading the chapters.
-

Plus with hiatuses being so frequent, any and all investment you get from these character is washed away anyways. And than you have to read up on them once again.
-
Honestly, I think this arc is amazing and I love every single detail of this ultra-complex tale - but I also think the last two ASOIAF novels were the best, so maybe my taste is unusual. Once this arc is finished and everybody can take it in as a whole I think people will look at it with much more favorable eyes.
-
i'm wondering if people here actually believe we are supposed to care for any single charachter with a name we meet or it's just a lazy excuse for bashing the manga. Of course 90% of bodyguards and mafia goons won't matter in the end, but having names and some charachter just helps the immersion, it's an intrigue plotline and and a chaotic environment just sets the tone.
-
^This. Exactly this. We aren’t supposed to care about every named character, just like we aren’t supposed to care about every single memeber of the Yonkou’s crews.
The only thing I think Togashi could probably do better is make some characters more visually distinct. Most (all?) of the bodyguards wear the same black suits, which can make it trickier to remember the more important ones.

People don't complain about this, and the problematic handling of the storyline by Togashi doesn't help.
It's not about emotional investment, I think it's apparent enough that nobody cares about any of the guards (except the hunters), it's more about keeping track of them, they are huge in numbers and they keep moving and switching places, how is the plot supposed to engage us when we can't remember where characters are? -
The princes, bodyguards and the mafias?
Yeah apart from some the Mafia and bodyguards name even then I can easily tell who they are by their designs. But I've already re-read this arc about 40 times.

Hmph. Doesn't that kinda prove his point?
-
I like this thread because everyone remains pessimistic. But everywhere else on the internet, there is always someone who has to start a conversation about how much this time it's gonna be special and that we're gonna get 40chapters in a row + 3seasons of anime
We should forbid conversation about Togashi's laziness though, it's toxic
-
Most people here are just tsundere towards Togashi.
-
Why would anyone expect more than a volume's worth of chapters anyway? This seems to have been the pattern for the past few years - just like we only get 2-4 chapters from Miura before Berserk returns to hiatus again. Just enjoy it while it lasts, god knows I have more than enough other books and manga on my plate so I can easily wait a few months while enjoying those in the meantime.
-
Hmph. Doesn't that kinda prove his point?
Well it only took me a few re-reads to get them down.
-
The people who manage to psych themselves enough to reread this arc multiple times are beyond me. I cannot even begin to understand what they find engaging or intriguing about it. I don't wanna imply they're just forcing themselves to like it to justify Togashi's bad work ethic, maybe they are seeing something in it I can't, but comparing it to ASOIAF is just lol. Maybe because they're both super wordy so naturally it means the same thing? But like aside from the obvious fact that manga is a visual medium and should therefore strive to tell its story in a visual way, GRRM knows how to craft engaging scenes, story and character arcs and complimentary themes that carry across his multiple books at a brisk pace in satisfying ways (for the most part). Reading HxH these days just feels like reading a bunch of alphabet soup thrown in haphazardly without any rhyme or reason of where it's all leading. Most probably because Togashi is writing not with the mindset of actually telling a story but of padding a volume because he has no idea how he's actually going to finish this arc. And I have nothing against that style of writing where you make it up as you go along, Araki does it all the time and I love Jojo, but Araki at least tries to make his characters engaging and the story simple and easy to follow. An excessively complicated story with 20 billion characters isn't mature and deep just because it's complicated, if it's not effectively using its characters and plot threads in an engaging way, it's just a bunch of boring, meaningless word salad.

Do not compare Togashi's scribbles to Miura's quality please. And even I concede that Togashi's last batch had better art than usual (most probably because he finally got assistants) but nothing content-wise to justify his absurd work schedule.
-
This meme about Togashi being a bad artist really needs to stop. Ever since the end of the election arc, where it seemed like he started to get a lot of help from assistants, the art has been fantastic. Literally the best HunterxHunter has ever looked. We all know and laugh about the scribbles but there has been significant improvement since then. All the designs for the nen beasts, the Chrollo Vs Hisoka fight, heck even the goofy ship design are great.
Also whenever someone praises the art it’s brought up that he’s just using assistants. How is this remotely a problem? Everyone uses assistants. If you’re gonna bark at him for being ‘lazy and having a bad work ethic’ then chastise him for using something to make drawing the manga easier and more consistent then it really just comes across as you having an issue with Togashi in general

People saying that Togashi has no idea how his arc is gonna end but still believe that Oda had everything planned for the ending of the WCI arc…
Quick reality check, the end of the Bigmom arc was a hundred times worst than Netero's nuke. But Oda is Goda because of context and whatnot I guess -
Do you know for a fact that the very same people who think Togashi has no idea how the arc will end believe that Oda planned out the ending for WCI?
Even so, I think that an author who has consistently dished out over 900 chapters with no more than a couple unplanned breaks deserves a little more vote of confidence regarding story planning than an author who has spent more of manga's lifeline on break than publishing chapters regularly. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
-
What I know is that no one complains very much about the end of WCI, but Netero's nuke has become a meme
In the long run, Oda has lots of things that are setup. In the short run, Togashi is better imo (like, within one arc or less, lol)
-
I think we complained plenty.
I think we'd complain a lot more if that was the last big finished arc of OP followed by several years of hiatus and irregular publishing. Just wouldn't have much else to talk about.
-

On here sure but on the rest of internet the end of WCI is pretty divisive. I'd say it's popularity on the whole there is the same as dressrosa.
-
Sure, but at least Togashi has taken care of his mess and the invincible Ants are now dead. On the other hand, it's still unclear why Zeff is still alive. You can't set up something as hegemonically powerful as "can kill all your relatives in the world" and then trigger an entire arc because of this threat and in the end pretend that it merely ever was a thing.
Anyway, I don't wanna start a debate about the end of WCI. I'm just putting things into perspective and saying that other authors too have (sometimes or often, or whatever) no idea wtf they're doing. Togashi just gets more hate because his manga is wordy, and that it sometimes makes it pretentious (whole pages of words for nothing remotely important). And also because of the hiatus I guess, yeah

We all knew the conflict with Big Mom wouldn't end on WCI, Oda set up a bigger confrontation with her way before WCI ended with the Elbaf stuff and Luffy being too weak to even scratch her.
Togashi is only good for produces TLDR pages with like 70% of each page being nearly irrelevant.
-

It's not about something so simple as a boss being defeated in an arc. Not sure how anyone in their right mind could think BM was going down.
-
Eagerly waiting for those genre changing spoilers, since OP spoilers are out now.

Still doesn't explain why Zeff isn't dead

The whole Togashi vs Oda debate is so petty and childish that It actually brings me back to my childhood and to the raging consolle war between the first Play Station and the N64. Back then we too had the big popular commercial behemot that released content in industrial amounts, some of which great, most decent, some forgettable, put against the smaller counterpart, which couldn't boast as many titles under it's belt, but kept all' the way a more consistent overall quality/quantity ratio. People were enraged, discussed which one was better ti the death. But in the end, It only boiled down to what each one enjoyed best for his own taste. Needless to say, i was and still am more of a Nintendo guy
-

Except the Zeff thing was taken care of. He was only under threat by Big Mom if Sanji failed to accept his wedding summons. Then Germa took over threatening him but later explicitly agreed to stop. Any serious criticisms of WCI's end have nothing to do with that.
-
Regardless of togashis general story design issues, I think its fair to criticise this arc for not having any real interesting hook at least from my perspective. The spiders and hisoka + kurapika is imo the most interesting aspect but its being practically sidelined for "watch kurapika try survive magic nen attacks from a bunch of princes with little depth while under specific social rules".
-
I blame momentum. The spider arc keept us in the edge of our seat for how many years because hiatus after hiatus delivered high levels of WTF. Say what you will of the ending, but in that god damned elevator chapter, or Wolfin's interrogations were intense.
This one has delivered.. piecemeals of interest, plus tons of "meh".
-
I have no idea how Oda and WCI got dragged into this, so random, and whataboutisms are just lame in general.
Anyways, I'm just glad the Spiders are here to spice the arc up. Maybe we'll see Hisoka before the next hiatus even.
-
Yeah idk we'll see how things go. There's certainly a lot of interesting ideas being brought up but it's definitely hurt by the batch releases. When the story continually expands from Princes to royal guards to bastard kids, it's slowly meandering its way towards having everything setup which definitely hurts the hype. It's kind of crazy when you've got the Spiders, Hisoka, Kurapika, Leorio, the rest of the Zodiacs, Netero's son, Ging, Pariston, and Pariston's crew of temp hunters all on the same voyage.
-
! The editor was indeed hyping things up just for the sales.
Slow chapter. Nothing much happens. -
So, remind me of all the known stands, Nen beasts I mean, and take into consideration that Benjamín and Princess queen bee are Nen users on their own, the cat was her own skill, while the anémona was the stand.
Or was it the other way around?
Ben had the xenomorph thing that we didn't knew what it did
Camilla had the boob anémona that had mind control?
Prince ghandi had the money shitting wheel
Prince Bateman has the weird pairo horse thing
Prince he man has the substance abuse car
Princess host fan has the weird scribble x scribble thing that indoctrinates people
Prince junkie had the penis looking thing
Prince Trump has the fart cloud that also mind controls
Prince the good one has the angry beast that commands loyalty
Princess tsundere is unknown but was being trained in Nen by mellody
Princess earnest has the doors
Princess sweet the dead had mind control induced by nagging
Prince the hamster has the safe space dragon
And wooble has a mysterious shadow -
! People are definitely going to make fun of the editor's tweet…:ninja:
Do bear in mind, the editor's tweet is probably in reference to a chapter we will see in 2/3/4 weeks time.
! Anywhere this chapter is as usual with the whole bodyguard thing.
I don't get the point of sending Fugetsu down to the 3rd deck last chapter and then bringing her back to the 1st deck in the very next chapter!
I guess she now learned her ability & will experiment again?? -
