Mashima used fanservice a lot but he actually has his women get hurt and battle through pain to win. Its been 12 years since oda gave a main female character a main fight which is how most of the problems in the series are solved by. All the guys can be beaten almost to death but the women come put of things mostly spotless.
Here's a telling interview with mashima about wendy.
- I guess, there were various opinions about hurting Wendy.
M: She's a little girl, so I'm sure there were people, who were against. My editor also told me, that it's too much. But Wendy is not someone, who needs protection, she's a warrior. Warrior's duty is to fight, and when she fights, she gets injured and that is to be expected.
- You said that during preparatory meeting too, didn't you?
M: I wanted to draw Wendy as someone, who fights along with her friends. Even if she's a little girl, if she don't get injured along with her friends, then their friendship is falsehood. It may be painful, but there's no other way. She gets injuries, she has painful experiences, but I think that's what mean to be friends.
When the men face consequences into putting their lives on the lines and the women end up fine. Its a bit insulting tbh when you got cases like rebecca / tashigi, where they end up needing men to save them and dont show their resolve to fight and win, or rather oda pulls away from that before they can finish the fight.
Or in nami and robin's case he just doesnt show them giving their all where sanji/zoro/luffy are almost at deaths door. This wasnt as big of a problem before EL/TB but its been 10 years since that so I think its fair to call it out for what it is.

@darktravis:
Nami has occassionally bouts of fan-service.
Lucy and Erza are TnA smogasboards.
If you are against a large amount of fanservice in battle then would you take away the nami-califa fight? Have her stand on the sidelines while everyone else is giving their all to save robin?
