! Hot Damn! Starcrushed was something.
Star vs. The Forces of Evil
-
-
! Beautiful does not even describe both episodes. Starcrush especially really gives you everything a season finale should.
! She could have at least whispered Toffe's return just in case. -
! Yep, that was a great season finale. The Starsong seemed kind of filler-y at first, but it had a great payoff. And everything with Moon Butterfly was fantastic.
! So yeah, overall, Season 2 was pretty strong. Was hoping we'd get to see a bit more of Toffee, but I imagine we'll see a lot more of him next season. Which, actually, could very well be the last season. -
oh boy shit was gooooooood. Second season is solid gold man. Hope they keep the great work on season three or better call it season toffee.
-
Gave the show second chance starting from the Season 1 finale and forward. At first, the show still maintained the weak writing that I always thought it had and pretty much it not doing enough with the whole "wacky multi-dimensional adventure" concept. But then came the "Ludo in the Wild" episode, and geez. I was not expecting to genuinely like an episode and laugh at its jokes. Ludo quickly went from a very WEAK(in personality) dull antagonist, to something compelling(and he gets better and more sympathetic too). In just one episode too.
If it wasn't for this episode, I would have dropped the show again. Second episode I liked was the Goblin Dog one. I don't know what it is, but it felt like one of those unusual Adventure Time episodes, and that was almost enough to sell me of the possibility that the show could do interesting stories that are "a little weird" as the title song says.
From there, the writing just got better. And it also became really REALLY good at developing and giving just enough spotlight for its side characters. Heck, I even find this one aspect better done here than in other modern cartoons of similar caliber. Here's hoping it does alot more with this , because it's pretty much its strength despite its weaknesses. So yeah, looking forward to season 3.
-
I adore what they did with Queen Moon.
She's immensely powerful even without her wand, but she's compassionate to the point of caring for Ludo's well being. Best of both worlds for a balanced ruler.
I'm so happy that she stepped out of the standard "strict mother" trope and started being more of a person. A badass one at that.I also want to see more of Hekapoo. Her design is awesome and I loved her debut episode quite a bit.
-
@MDL:
I also want to see more of Hekapoo. Her design is awesome and I loved her debut episode quite a bit.
Running With Scissors wasn't exactly her debut episode in case you are thinking that.
-
Yeah, I should have said "her first episode in the spotlight".
-
Someone has to ask it. So this is a serious question:
Does Star Butterfly - or Mewnians in general - poop?
-
That's up in the air because of when Star and River were amazed and in awe of an Earth toilet.
"Humans… put things in there."There WAS this exchange in the Mewnipendence Day episode (paraphrased):
Ludo: "We can watch her wherever she goes! Kitchen, bedroom, even in the bathroom!"
[Toffee grimaces]
Toffee: "Umm…"
Ludo: "Maybe we don't keep the bathroom..."But that could easily just be referring to when she strips down to take a shower or something.
-
Given the near Dark Age tech level of Mewni, they could poop and just haven't invented an equivalent to the toilet yet.
That's a sentence I wasn't expecting to type today…
-
-
You know who isn't in that intro?
Jackie.
Wonder how that relationship works out.
-
BTW, we never posted this
One more month, y'all!
-
Stop being so perfect, Janna.
On second thought, don't. -
I will miss the original intro with it's more dynamic shots and energy.
-
just saw the 2 hour premiere and i was blown away.
! not as much as Toffee was when Star blasted him into a slimy corpse with her fully restored, newly upgraded wand. man, that had to hurt on so many levels that i can't help but laugh.
-
So it hasn't aired then? I'm in the UK so they don't air star. Need to try and find out where I can watch it.
-
it aired over here just a while ago. but there's another airing at 2pm est. on disney XD.
-
is there anywhere that streams it online though? Because on my Disney XD in the UK it is not airing at all.
-
! Welp. I guess we won't be seeing Toffee and Glossaryck ever again.
-
Man! I miss the movie hard. :(
I hope everyone is having a good time with the two-hour film.
-
! I'm not sure how to feel about this movie. I can ignore the lack of details on how this affects their relationship because Mewni was the bigger story point but the way it ended rubbed me the wrong way. We've spent the whole story so far building up Toffee and letting him be mysterious and threatening. Finally he comes back and it lasts about a minute before Star Deus Ex Machina's him out of existence with an op power-up. The entire resistance part felt like filler and the way the war ended in Moons flashback was so pathetic. She blasts of fire his finger and so the monsters just leave? Toffee as well just gets up and walks away no problem. It felt so unnatural like they couldn't think how to end either part with him. It also feels like the new opening is out of place now seeing as a lot of its elements like her wand and possessed Ludo are wrapped up. Also Ludo being thrown into the portal again just felt like he's gone in a complete circle and is back to where he was at the begining of season 2. But when'll have to see for that.
! This movie did some good things though. The animation was really good. The emotional scenes were handled well, especially the scene of Marco punching a hole through Toffee. There was also a lot of good set-up in regard to Mewni-Monster relations, Eclipse as the true villain, Glosseryks fate and Moons fate. Hopefully these all pay off in the future. -
It took me almost four hours to watch this on a damn buffering and I have a completely unrelated question.
Was the deal with corn? Why is corn so important to the mewmans? Why is corn the only production of Mewni? -
Overall, the SvtFoE movie/first eight episodes of season 3 were pretty great, but…
! Yeah, that flashback with Moon Butterfly and Toffee felt really rushed. We barely got any establishment for why Toffee and the Lizards were fighting the Mewmans in the first place and then they just give up really suddenly and awkwardly. Definitely could've used another episode to flesh that out.
! Also, I'm really hoping this isn't the last we'll see of Toffee. Not just because he's a cool character, but…what I'm getting from that ending is that all he wanted was to get his finger back? If so, that really doesn't make him seem very nefarious. I mean, yeah, the way he went about getting his finger back was pretty scummy, but then why was it so important to him in the first place anyway?
! Really, this just left me feeling really confused about his motivations. -
There's one thing I don't get…
! What's so special about Toffee (back then before he started to consume magic) that for example Rhombulus cannot just crystalize him? I mean, if even Eclipsa got crystalized and she couldn't do anything about it, at least before her deal with Moon, then I don't see Toffee and these lizards do any better. Sure they had their regeneration, but… that's it?
! Or give them coupons for Quest Buy which will expire just in time. -
Season 3 is coming November.
-
This got me to marathon the whole show.
Timing was pretty good. Not that Princess Unicorn Head was utterly unbearable, but…
I feel that she's something that the writers willfully avoided developing or doing anything different with.
So most of the time, I was just more invested in the character's interacting around her.
I think I had an ironic laugh for it once, but not as good as Star's shoutout to Ferguson and other forgotten guy in season 2.Not sure whether to feel worried about Jackie's absence in the opening.
Hoping for no relation. -
Marco is the most likeable character?
-
Marco is the most likeable character?
After giving it some thought where sleep would usually be, I gotta give that title to Buff Frog.
-
Oh boy. This is gonna hurt.
!
-
Coming back in about a month!
-
They are bringing the Insecurity Tumour again?
-
Yay! One episode a week!!!
-
So what's everyone's thiught on the eps that've aired so far? (spoilers up til "Marco Jr"):
[hide]"Bogbeast of Boggabah" - ehhhhh. Fillerish. River's kinda one of those hit-and-miss characters for me and while I actually found him quite entertaining in the movie he kinda just dragged out his presence here. Do like the revelation of what the 'Bogbeast' is and what it entails though… somewhat.
"Total Eclipsa the Moon" - Now we're talking - love the usage of daughters to potentially bring Moon and Eclipsa closer. Also as much as they're playing up her enigmatic and morally gray qualities I just can't see Eclipsa being even an antagonist figure for Star which brings us to...
"Butterfly Trap" - the box returns! And it confirms suspicions that the Council's been having some nasty tricks/secrets of theirs for a while now. Curious to see where the revelation with Eclipsa since Butterflies don't really have a legitimate call on being heirs to the throne. Also Star not being related to Eclipsa (and Meteora/Heinous phew) :( oh and Star freeing Eclipsa
"Ludo where art Thou" - uuhhhh, really creepy, almost reaching Gravity Falls level of discomfort, or even Bojack levels. Dennis' admiration of his brother is kinda unhealthy, giving a rosy view of S1 Ludo though admittedly I have no idea how much of that is pressure from their jackass parents and anti-Monster prejudice
"Is Another Mystery" - Huh, they finally tackled the class element of anti-monster prejudice with Tom, it's all bullshit in the end. Hope this isn't the end of Buffrog (AND KATRINA).
"Marco Jr" - first off, lol at all the shippers going crazy before finding out what the ep was really about
Second, it's a nice touch towards the end on how Marco's getting out of touch with his parents (heh at the details concerning his age) Now, in light with "Is Another Mystery", let's hope they don't screw up the Tom/Marco/Star dynamic...[/hide]
Also, titles finally revealed for the final eps airing on April 7 and they're:
[hide]"Divide" and "Conquer"[/hide]
-
! Oh dear Lord. They are making a Pony Head Episode next.
! A Pony. Fucking. Head. Episode…Eeeeew!
-
Oh look at those finale synopsis
!
Shit is gonna get real. -
Finale is out boys and Holy Globgor!
! Glossaryck things wouldn't haven scalated to the point where they are now if you hadn't been a dick and talked like you did since the beginning.
Also no expecting Eclipsa's husband name to be Globgor, you bamboozled me Daron nice one.
So Eclipsa has the wand, her daughter and now her husband.
Star still can do wandless magic which is nice, and Moon is still MIA albeit very alive.
Besides the faults S3 had the final did deliver.
Now we wait S4 and the eventual meltdown of a breakup between Tom and Star, since Marco told him he kissed her.
Oh and can't wait for Ludo be back, another wild card to add to the plot. -
! HOLY FUCK THAT FINAL BATTLE WAS INSANE!
Star's one on one fight was epic enough, but then Eclipsa showed just how powerful she is.
That was fucking chilling, the way she easily shut down Meteora with her deadly spells.
This finale blew me away, easily my favourite part of the whole show. Season 4 is gonna have to do a lot to top this. -
! But what about the spells living inside Star's wand?
-
I'm so sad that the series is over. At least until season 4 comes out….
On Disney Channel.
This will take awhile.
-
! Star still can do wandless magic which is nice,
! Can she? Thought her final attack was a kind of removal of her wandless magic power.
-
! Can she? Thought her final attack was a kind of removal of her wandless magic power.
! Didn't Moon kinda pulled the same move against Toffee, and well you know, kept her magic.
Maybe this is just the end of Fire Butterfly Star form. I'm sure that there's more Butterfly forms to master.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Someone spoiled the queens of Mewni form the spell book:
!
Sorry for the bad quality but the photos are from twitter and I coulnd't make the background transparent in the power point.I ordered them from most butterflys along their name to least, not chronologically. -

! I'm pretty sure she just pulled a Vegeta on that.

! For now it's safe to say that's a queen(male). I don't know when the Spell Book is out, until then the mystery remains.

I'm very late to the party with season 3 (I'm just up to Eclipsas return), but hot damn the writing has improved so much since the early days. The animation was always good, but the directing has really been stellar so far, with real heft and beauty to the dramatic moments. Bringing a strong central theme into focus has also helped the serialization flow more smoothly (just like it did with Steven Universe), and theres lots of laugh-out moments to go round ("I thought she was a pescetarian!")
Not much to say, other than I'm glad I kept watching this show. -
Check back with us when you've caught up, since the real meat of the new writing/direction truly starts with Eclipsa's return.
-
"What about Rhombulus is he a monster? He's got SNAKES for ARMS!"
"Oh heavens no, he's on the Magic High Comission!"
"What about the Pony Heads then? They're literal flying Pony Heads?"
"Oh no, we've had ties with them for years!"
"Then what about RichPidgeon? His kingdom is brand new! And he's a pidgeon WITH LEGS! How is he not a monster?"
"Well, he's rich"Oh my goodness, I've been waiting so long for this. So good.
-
My favourite part of that scene:
"It makes absolutely no sense that lizard people are monsters, but Lekmet the giant magical goat-man was not."
"Too soon, Star!"
