I just got Paper Mario: Color Splash, and I really don't understand why so many people disliked this game.

That's a totally different game on a totally different system, though. People shouldn't give up on the entire Paper Mario franchise just because of Sticker Star.

I think people just want another original Paper Mario or Thousand Year Door. And while Sticker Star and Color Splash certainly aren't that, I think they're perfectly fine games on their own merits.

Of course not….they followed that up with Paper Jam before eventually seguing into Color Splash. Though depending on who you ask Super Paper Mario was where the downward spiral started.

Was Paper Jam really that bad?
Was Paper Jam really that bad?
It was the blandest Mario & Luigi game ever without any original characters/species and only New Super Mario Bros-themed locales. And I'm not exaggerating at all when I say that AT LEAST one-third of your entire playthrough will be Toad collecting mini games. The only real positive things going for it are Paper Mario being fun and very creative to use in combat, and the humor.

Would know since I haven't played it yet, just been reading into the fan feedback.
There's this puzzle game for PSOne that I used to love to play as a kid called Roll Away ( "Kula World" in Europe), and after not finding it anywhere to obtain via legal means found an emulator to finally see why it was I liked it so much.
The game is excellent. Highly recommend it to anyone actually able to find it. Starts out easy and curves fairly well, there's no intrusive tutorials, mechanics are introduced and then slowly expanded upon phenomenally, and it's one of those games where you feel amazing when you finally figure out a puzzle.
Just finished Mega Man 9, immediately continued with Proto Man.
It's weird that he was never playable before this. Bass has his game with Mega Man & Bass (btw, fuck that game) and he only appeared in 7 & 8 before that. At least Proto Man is kinda cool, Bass is just an edgy version of Mega Man. Anyway, it's definitively harder with him, since his mid-air shield block hasn't been useful so far and being able to slide and charge up your beam doesn't really compensate for taking more damage.
Overall, The games pretty good though. There's some cheap stuff in it though, that long stretch with the extendable platforms and flying scissors in Hornet Man's stage can go to hell, but it was downright easy after all the bullshit I dealt with in MM & Bass. Not a fan of the shop though, I didn't like it in MM 7, 8 and Bass to begin with. It just way more satisfying to find stuff in hard-to-reach spots, here they just decided to make them really rare.
No way I'm doing the achievements, I already do that for Shovel Knight and I don't even know why. Once I'm done with Proto Man and the Superhero Mode I'll continue with Mega Man 10.

Sure you won't reconsider? Those weeks of soulcrushing torture I went through in order to beat MM9 without getting damaged were totally worth it. Totally.
I'm watching Mario Kart 8 Deluxe play itself.
Because Gold Glider.
That's the spirit of the game

nah, I'm good, I can do without the torture.
For real though, it is satisfying when you get an almost impossible achievement. I always had mixed feelings about them, since so many games just litter them with completely superfluous and stilted challenges, some arbitrary "die this many times"-type or something just as dull. But getting through Shovel Knight without collecting any relics & health power ups feels like something people would've done anyway and it does make the game more challenging in a reasonable way and still keeps it fun.
Not getting hit once in Mega Man isn't one of them though. I mean Jesus Christ, that would be a pain in the ass even in one of the easier games like 6 and 8.
…Yes. Yes it would a pain in the ass, especially with all four parts of the wily stages in a row.
sobs softly

A lot of old action games are really rewarding like that. You should give Battletoads a try.
I actually played Battletoads a couple of weeks ago, I quit when I reached the Turbo Tunnel. It's definitively doable, but at that time it was eroding all my patience, so I'm just delaying it until I played all the other games I always wanted to play.
The Castlevania titles are loads of fun, just finished the first one a couple of months ago, they are def my favorite, but NES titles in general are more fun than I expected them to be. Never owned one, gaming started with SNES and Sierra PC games for me.

You should try Master System and Game Gear games too. They're closer to Turbografx games than NES games.
!
Still plugging through Xenoblade X. Some 80 hours in and still on Chapter 6 or whatever  although it's the rare sort of game where I have an interest in engaging in almost all of the different aspects of the game (story's a bit weak though).
Can't tell atm if I just suck with skells or if having one is prompting me to take on enemies I probably shouldn't be engaging at my level. I've already totaled each one at least twice. I also have absolutely no handle on skell overdrive, or how to freakin' heal while in them >.<
Yeah the main story suffers somewhat due to the design decisions of the game, but I forgive it for everything else being awesome, including all the quest-related world building.
Getting a grasp on Skells takes a while. They can definitely easily wreck a lot of things, but they don't automatically make you super overpowered. Each Skell type has different bonuses from Overdrive, with I think the only common thing between all of them being that you get increased probability of cockpit mode (which basically just makes you temporarily invincible and refreshes all your cooldowns). Getting multiple cockpit modes while in Overdrive increases your probability of the Overdrive time being extended, with a max of like 5 extensions or something (I forget exactly). To heal you have to equip weapons with healing arts (I'm pretty sure the shop sells some), other than stuff like Lailah's Overdrive giving you constant healing. It's my favorite model due to having 6000 GP and the broken Overdrive bonus which not only heals you constantly but also makes you immune to every type of status effect (including stun, topple, etc). A good Lailah build can actually destroy anything in the game with ease. But then again a good enough build for other Skell types can also one-shot most things (these builds do take work though).
But I digress. The basics to keep in mind:
Ahhh, so that's what determines the probability of your overdrive being extended. That's good to know, although I still prefer how overdrive works during ground combat. In so far as I've seen the only healing arts you can get are those that recover appendage HP (which doesn't actually affect your total HP). Maybe I need to max one of the other weapons developers :/. Looking at the Lailah series now it does look pretty damn useful. My first build has been on a Formula frame, but I might switch as I picked it to try and go for an all-out offense build (it apparently increases your crit chance and reduces your cooldowns during overdrive). Which might be good except for the aforementioned problems with healing and the fact that even some level ~40 enemies have been perfectly capable of busting through my "high" evasion and dunking on me for 8,000+ damage in a single hit >.<.
Thanks for all the info, I've been trying to build a beam-focused skell to maximise the damage from my e-scythe but I'll definitely look in to adding a few more weapons with shorter cooldowns. Also G-Buster is indeed awesome…but it's so hard to overlook the fun that can be had slicing in to enemies from behind with your freakin' beam scythe. I might look in to switching back to G-Buster though if I continue to run into problems with combat control.
No worries, go for whatever suits you best. If you think you'll do a lot of grinding for good augments or craftable gear later on though (most notably those sweet level 60 Skells), definitely look into Lailah for survivability reasons. And you want M-Missiles ME. Those are godly because they automatically target appendages which you can't even always do in a Skell, so you're basically guaranteed to get every drop that comes from a specific appendage (or at least a chance at the drops when they're not 100% guaranteed). The way to do it right though is to find ones with the magazine capacity increase (I think it's called MSL-MAG or something). You do the same thing for sidearms to make OP Skells (usually Diskbombs or Drones). But I'm giving you way more info than you need right now.
In other news, I replayed Zack and Wiki recently. I still love the game and the puzzle design is overall very solid and creative, but I do have to say the motion controls did not age well… and that's assuming they actually held any novelty to begin with. It's so annoying when I know exactly what I want to do, especially under time pressure, but the goddamn Wiimote just won't behave. And sometimes it's unreasonably punishing in the sense that you die to something you couldn't possibly have foreseen and then have to repeat a long series of things from scratch just to try something different. It can definitely get old. I feel like it should have had checkpoints, and sure it can penalize your (pretty meaningless) score for dying but you don't repeat everything every time. It would definitely beat the current system where you have to purchase tickets that revive you and don't adhere to specific checkpoints (and really do make it feel like cheating).
Decided to take things back to 2004 and go back to playing Snes games on Snes 9x.

Oh man, I had no idea about those M-Missiles. They sound awesome as I will really need to look in to getting some proper appendage crushing weapons, augments etc for farming. I also had no idea that mag capacity effected the number of times drones shot, so thanks for all the info :).
I've only got level 50 skells in the store atm though, so I'm excited to see what the level 60 ones look like when I unlock them.

Level 60 Skells have to be crafted and they generally require some pretty difficult items (the exceptions are DLC character Skells); I think you eventually get the blueprints from affinity missions. And yes appendage crusher augments are also absolutely the way to go, but probably not for the reason you expect – you combine it with ether weapons and the Core Crusher ability which makes you put out disgusting damage.

I actually did play and finished that a few years ago…quirky but fun game.
Played FF6 again only this time I didn't die in the 2nd part of the mine

Wait this game has DLC? I had no idea :/ should probably check that out.
That core crusher+ether weapons+appendage crusher combo sounds pretty awesome, I love that there are so many different, fun ways to play this game.
All the DLC was included by default in the Western release. Yelv, Alexa, HB, and Bozé are all DLC characters though. There are also some repeatable DLC missions you can do after beating the game to easily farm resources (cash, Miranium, BP, and even affinity hearts).
Ahhh, so that's why I keep seeing Alexa referred to as a DLC character. Makes more sense now. As a semi-related aside, Alexa is awesome.
I swear there better eventually be some really great explanation for Elma's increasingly insufferable anime-ness. Like she's the reincarnation of the fucking Buddha himself or something >.<
I've played Overwatch, WoW, and StarCraft all day these past couple months and like 5 minutes of other stuff. I've gone full Blizzdrone.
My internet has been unstable for online games for a while so I'm playing northgard For a while
Also I got sick and tired of any "competitive" game cause it causes more anger than fun that it's not worth it anymore
I've been playing Moemon FireRed in preparation for when I do a streamed playthrough of the normal version.
And holy crap, Jolteon is always so much more badass than I remember.
My Butterfree is a powerhouse, it's like lvl 45 and has 92 Special ATK.
It dominated a couple of gyms by itself, and is one of my heaviest hitters.
Jolteon has the same Special ATK stat at 6 lvls lower.
Fuck fuck fuckity fuck fuck.
C'mon video game don't do this to me. I've given you 100+ hours of my life and counting and all I'm asking for is this one thing. All I ask is that you let me take my Photon Saber and jam it in to
! Lao's
fucking traitorous, "woe is me" face. He's right there! Just laying in that stupid pool of whatever just waiting for me. I don't wanna have to sit through another chapter of this played-out-two-chapters-ago story thread. I don't wanna sit through the almost inevitable seeming story sections where he somehow escapes and I've gotta hunt him down and it's supposed to be sympathetic with sad music playing or whatever.
None of that.
Just let me lop his fucking head off.
No sympathy. In the words of the late, fictional Al Capone:
I want him DEAD! I want his family DEAD! I want his house burned to the GROUND! I wanna go there in the middle of the night and I wanna PISS ON HIS ASHES!
Please Xenoblade. Pretty please. I ask for sooo little.
Is it bad that this amuses me?
Hahaha only if your amusement is derived in part from the foreknowledge that there is yet more frustration awaiting me in the future >.<
What chapter are you on, by the way?
Hmmm, I think I just finished Chapter 9? The one where you beat up on a gang of furries in ugly skells.
Been truckin' through my Backlog of games and made some real progress recently.
Beat Splatoon 2's Campaign, but that didn't take long. Was super fun however. Great game. Looking forward to more splatting online with folks, especially the Splatfest this week.
Then I went back and Finished Mighty Number 9 actually.
Honestly, while it's not a spectacular game that blew me away or anything, I felt it was at least a decent Mega Man X-ish game. Like, if this was Mega Man X9 or something, I'd call it better than X7 and 8 and somewhat of a return to form for the series.
But it has a lot of problems. Like a lot. Plus there was hype for it to be the harbinger of a new age of Mega Man style games… Hype that it could never hope to live up to... add in a massive amount of drama surrounding the kickstarter and I see why it pisses people off so much.
The fact that it is a passably decent Mega Man X (it's more like X than the main series) style game probably wasn't enough for a lot of people, It was for me... Or maybe I just had SUPER low expectations due to people calling it the worst thing ever since launch? But I enjoyed it. The Final boss was a challenge and was really fun to fight I thought.
Anyway, now I'm playing Doom 2016. It's a surprisingly good game. Haven't been too interested in the "Doom" series, but I got it cheap on Black Friday when I got my PS4 so I was like "Hear this is good, will give it a shot". Usually I like to play FPS games with a Mouse and keyboard but this controls pretty well. I checked the table of contents for a walkthrough just to see how far into the game I am and it looks like I only have two chapters left, so probably gonna finish that up tonight before the Splatfest starts tomorrow.
I Also find myself in an interesting position here. I have at least one new game coming out every month this year that I'm getting. Sonic Mania is this Month, Metroid II and Marvel vs. Capcom are Next Month, then Mario Oddysey in October, Pokemon Ultra Moon in Nov with Sonic Forces and the Zelda BotW Story DLC both hitting sometime this "Holiday" too. This means in order to keep up and not just break even for the rest of the year, I have to make sure to beat at least two backlogged games a month to keep pace.
I'm thinking NiGHTS into dreams HD is a no-brainer for the next couple before Sonic Mania. It's super short, I haven't played it since the Saturn, I remember loving it, and what better to tie into Sonic's retro-revival with Sonic Mania about to hit? I can even do NiGHTS Journey of Dreams (the Wii Sequel) after Sonic Mania.
But, I still need one other game to play. I've narrowed it down to Uncharted 3, or Star Wars: Republic Commando...
Both are very different, not sure which one I'd wanna play. Thoughts anyone?

It had a lot of very oldschool die-and-learn-from-it moments, which tend to really piss people off today. For 10 bucks on Amazon it's not a bad deal. (For anyone who liked Nights, Rhodea's currently $15.)
The first of three free dlc for Hollow Knight was released. So yeah, gotta play this masterpiece some more. Maybe I will try a speedrun achievement.
It's amazing that players are still discovering secrets so long after the release.
I'm fairly deep (I think, I just got the Epoch) into Chrono Trigger (DS version, if that makes any difference). It's so good. It hasn't aged a day and is almost certainly going to be my favorite SNES era RPG once I'm done.
Anyone else playing Pit People? It's a turn-based game on steam with simple controls, a decent amount of combat depth, and goofy yet dark humor.
@No:

That game from Behemot? Since when it was released?
I finally beat this today:
The final boss was a pain.
I swear this game must have had two different writing teams for the story missions and for the side missions that develop the lore of the world…
The stuff with the garbage eaters and the asexual bugs, the slowly simmering xenophobia and the budding seeds of racial harmony, is great. The stuff where the one-dimensional bad guy you let (fucking inexplicably) leave comes back as a crappy return antagonist to die a crappy death to complete their crappy non-arc is crappy.
Also, the inside of the Nocilucent Sphere is fucking terrifying…
Also, the inside of the Nocilucent Sphere is fucking terrifying…
Yes, that's one of the 4 official superbosses in the game XD
Oh fuck me, and I've only found two of them too
The act of discovering them has been really awesome though. That golden tailed godling above Noctilum is sooo cool.
Currently having a fine old time playing Cave Story on Switch.
Anybody playing West of Loathing? It's fabulous.
If you played Kingdom of Loathing you'll love it even more.
