New nakamas( well, nakamas pets) zeus and Prometheus(sanji since he needs power up and is fire). Someone could get napoleon too, Brook because he has soul powers and is swordman.

Using a standard font, the average bible has around 1,200 pages
1,200 pages of nonsense, but somehow we managed to do 968 pages of nonsense as well, the bible has a serious competitor right here.

I've got a question for anyone who's reread Impel Down, Marineford, and Post-Marineford recently. Now that Jinbei has essentially joined, how has your view of those arcs changed?
On one hand, those arcs now work as something of a Strawhat origin story, similar to Whiskey Peak & Alabasta for Robin, and Water 7 for Franky. On the other hand, unlike those last two, one of the big appeals of those arcs was that Luffy was completely separated from the rest of his crew, but now that isn't totally the case anymore. I just want to know if that new layer makes up for losing some of their old charm.
It's a fairly minor detail, but one that I've been thinking about lately.

I actually re-read the chapter where Luffy met Jimbei in Impel Down for the first time, and… it's actually rather lackluster in hindsight. Crocodile gets freed, Jimbei asks to be released, and he's let out. Then everybody tries to escape. There's not really much of a focus on Luffy and Jimbei's relationship beginning to bud, but they help each other in major ways as the story progresses.
-
People thought jimbei was a sure thing but I predict he'll DIE and Zeus ans Prometheus Will Join. Much more interesting in depth characters than jimbei.
-
I will say, the Straw Hats getting pets does sound interesting lol
-
My interest in a pet died when Surume didn't join.
-
Chopper's gag bounty is enough evidence that they aren't getting any pets.

Wait until he gets his real bounty. I hope he becomes a big focus during Wano
-
It's funny I never considered the possibility that Oda had Carue frozen during Drumm arc to give more spotlight to an other pet.

Once Marineford ended I fully accepted all the arguments I was initially against and completely embraced Jimbei. So every single time I went back over Impel Down and the War I looked at everything the two did together with a different perspective.
I know it doesn't seem like much but considering what we know now it's cool to see how amazed Jimbei was regarding Luffy at their first meeting. We know Jimbei's man crush for Luffy only grew stronger over the years but you can see how it started at Impel Down with Jimbei's internal dialogue. Then after Jimbei begs to be set free, Luffy just stares at him for a moment and decides he should be saved. It's only two small panels between them staring at each other but every time I read that part I start to get the feels.
Luffy had no reason to trust Jimbei but in just a few moments Luffy made a decision that would completely change both of their lives.
Then later on in a very special moment Luffy bites Jimbei. So heart warming, it's all enough to make a grown man cry.

Lately I've been watching it again from Sabaody to get reaquainted with the Supernovae, and I'm at ID now. My thoughts are kinda the same as they were when first reading it: on the surface, there was not much to indicate that Jinbe would be more than simply a strong support character such as Hancock or Ivankov. That was sorta the theme of Marineford, how all these powerful forces allied around Luffy and WB to save Ace. Others had suspicions about Jinbe's role before he even showed up, but I personally started believing it near the end of the arc as Jinbe tried to get Luffy away from Akainu.
One important clue the anime gave us to Jinbe's importance was the original casting of Daisuke Gori, who had previously played Dorry the giant, Rockstar from Shanks' crew, and some OP movie roles. There were a few times where notable actors who had played smaller roles on the show were cast in SH roles later. Ikue Ohtani was young Sanji before Chopper, Cho was Barbarossa and Henzo, and perhaps most famously, Kazuki Yao played Jango and Bon Clay. It's perported that Oda had Yao specifically in mind when designing Franky, so I wouldn't have been surprised if he had the same idea in mind for Gori as Jinbe. Sadly, with Gori's passing, that wasn't to be, but it was nice to get a glimpse of it.

I could have sworn I remember Oda saying the next Straw Hat member would be an old villain.

It was basically alluding to how Luffy would be teaming up with boss characters to storm ID and Marineford.

I though that was used back in Water 7 and people kept recycling the phrase(which would fit with Franky), but maybe I'm remembering wrong.
-
I actually think the Jinbe stuff is even a bit sweeter in hindsight. Luffy was separated from his crew, but he was able to form an emotional bond with someone to help him get through those events, and I'm glad it's progressed into what we have now.
-

Nah, it was before Impel Down and claimed "Luffy is going to team up with a former villain" which people turned to "the new nakama will be a former villain"…
-
oh I guess I was wrong. As much as I like Jinbe, I'd still rather something more unexpected and interesting like an old villain.

Well today its clear as a bell because the build up to Jimbei joining was longer than the manga has actually existed. Back during Arlong Park who could have ever guessed that "Super Arlong" was going to end up on the crew? He was the last of the original War Lords revealed, allowing many people to let their imaginations run wild about how powerful, how ruthless and how amazingly cool a Whale Shark Fishman War Lord villain would turn out to be. Then the chapter that we got a shadowy mention from Sengoku about how Jimbei apposed the war and was captured, one man dared to shake up the nakamate discussions forever.
Even then it has been constant bickering and arguing for the better half of a decade. I can understand the sentiment of Jimbei being boring(I don't think so in the slightest) but after so many years of people assuming they really understood how the selection process of a new crew mate went down only to have a big muscle fat Fishman throw that all away slowly over the course of many years just shows how unexpected he really was.

I think his stern and very serious demeanor which could be described as "boring" is actually an enrichment for the Straw Hats in this regard, since we have in my opinion a slight advantage for the more light-hearted or uber-goofy members or generally "less serious" or extraverted members (people who fall under one of those categories include Luffy, Nami, Usopp, Franky, Brook, Chopper, even Sanji) and Jinbe represents a good counterpoint.
Of course like all members he is occasionally depicted in an exaggereted funny manner, but his general personality remains.
-
Are we still in agreement that what we need after Jinbei joins is for a female grandma tomboy ninja (or possibly Yokai) to join?
-
I'm in agreement that Jinbe should be the final strawhat.
-
Nope we're getting 11 since oda likes soccer or something…. Also Luffy said 10 people so plus him that's 11.
-
@Dahaka.:
I'm in agreement that Jinbe should be the final strawhat.
Jinbei should be the final "male" Strawhat.
-
Actress Pudding with side job as cook assistant is looking the most likely this arc. Carrot continues to copy strawhats, and no other candidates exist.
Wano's going to have too many characters to focus on a new nakama that's never been seen before, I feel this is the last arc to introduce the next nakama, even if said person doesn't join until the end of wano. It's just better for someone who's played a part in the story and is well known joins in wano than a completely new character showing up.
-
We are already getting Jinbe this arc and his joining is already handicapped by half of the crew not being there, why would we need to get another SH at the same time further lessening the impact of Jinbe joining?
-
Jimbe officially joins this arc, Pudding may not officially join until the end of wano. She's been introduced this arc and still likely has that upcoming flashback, possibly saved for elbaf. Jimbe has also already met and interacted with every strawhat back on fishman island and said he would join in the future so it's not a big deal if half of them aren't here.
-

It lost impact just by how damn long his joining has been dragged out.

It doesn't mean it needs to lose even more impact. Taking so long didn't hamper the impact Jinbe joining, this arc focusing on everybody else but him is what's the problem.

Jimbe joined in spirit back at Fishman Island, all this is just fluff until he gets on the boat for good

See, that's why he should have just joined back at Fishman Island. Now he has to join during a Sanji arc. His only other option now is to go die.

But he shouldn't have. It would have undermined the tension of Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, and Zou by having two Warlords on Luffy's side, especially before seeing Gear Fourth in action. And Jimbei's bounty was bigger than Luffy's until Dressrosa (not that this really matters to Luffy himself, but Oda is never letting a crewmate's bounty surpass Luffy's). Staying behind in Fishman Island helped build-up Whole Cake Island.

Tension? What tension? Punk Hazard was the island of no consequences, and by having Jinbe joining you effectively make it clear the warlords are no biggie by that point. And the easy solution to the bounty issue is to make it so that Jinbe had a lower bounty. Sure you can say that it helped for WCI build up, but his part of the arc has by far been the least interesting so that's pretty whatever.

You mean how Zoro, Robin, and Brook were defeated by the Yeti Cool Brothers? Or Luffy getting knocked unconscious by Caesar? Or Law being wild card? Or Vergo's presence? Or Smiley and the poison gas? There certainly was tension in that arc. Not Enies Lobby-level tension, but on the same level as Thriller Bark. Zoro even needed to remind Luffy to get serious. And the arc before Punk Hazard had the Straw Hats completely demolish their opponents in Fishman Island. Why add a new crew member as powerful as Jimbei that early on when the Straw Hats just came back from the timeskip and haven't been pushed to mostly reveal the extent of their abilities gained post-timeskip yet? It's only redundant and detrimental towards being invested in the stakes of early New World islands.
And that is the issue with Jimbei. Doflamingo was the last Warlord antagonist. Jimbei being present alongside both Luffy and Law diminish his threat level. Sabo and Fujitora almost did that already, but they handled side-threats like Burgess/Birdcage, were inactive, or pursued the protagonists.
Jimbei's lackluster part of this arc doesn't mean that his joining being delayed is bad in and of itself, that's my point.

What tension is there in any of the main characters being defeated? They're just going to be alright later. You're gonna have to seriously handicap one and have them sit on the sidelines to add any sort of tension there. The poison gas is like one of the top examples of no consequences, everyone affected by it was made better after it was originally displayed as this super deadly thing. People like Law aren't really big wild cards. Maybe in their goals, but not so much in how they interact with the protagonists. Enies Lobby's tension came from how it may affect crew dynamics later on, plus it put the crew as a whole on the government's radar. I don't expect that much tension from every arc, but all PH really had was drug addicted children, which was a whole new low for a One Piece villain.
And Doflamingo wasn't even that threatening despite the lack of Jinbe. He just whipped out strings in ridiculous ways, so you would expect Luffy to whip something up himself to match that, in this case gear 4th. I don't think Jinbe being there would have made a real difference since he could easily be preoccupied with other stuff like helping the citizens instead of assisting against Doffy. You could even send him away with the Swirly Hats and then he gets into tensions with the Big Mom Pirates that way. There are plenty of ways to play it out.

So you're saying that there was no tension when Crocodile defeated Luffy? Or when Luffy was too exhausted to fight and Lucci was about to kill Usopp? Or when the Straw Hats were about to be killed by Oars and Moria before Nightmare Luffy showed up? Or the Noah crashing into Fishman Island? Just because we know the protagonists will win or escape in the end because they're protagonists does not mean we can't be invested in seeing how they make it out of seemingly impossible struggles. That's what makes these types of stories entertaining. Not so much whether or not they win, but how and why they win. And Jimbei being present spoils that because it makes their adventures easier when we haven't even seen them go all-out yet in the New World. And of course Law was a wild card, everybody talked about the possibility of betrayal and it was revealed in Dressrosa that his plan was to solely kill Doflamingo rather than help defeat Kaido. The same goes for Bege. Enies Lobby didn't only create tension out of how the crew would be affected, but also how the crew could defeat CP9 and escape the Buster Call that destroyed Robin's home island. Just because you know something will happen does not mean you can't be excited over seeing how it happens despite all of the opposing factors at play.
Of course Doflamingo was the threatening. He trashed Sanji in less than half a minute. The arc kept shoving Law about to be killed by him left and right for hype. We had his clone getting decapitated to show how cunning he is. We have the whole Birdcage countdown to make things even more dramatic. None of the other Straw Hats were preoccupied with helping random citizens, only allies. Jimbei doesn't offer anything needed to anybody, only Luffy and Law since they're the ones that need help. We expected Luffy to have some sort of answer to Doflamingo since he's the protagonist, sure. But we didn't truly know what he could pull. And that is where the suspense came from. Doflamingo kept countering Luffy until the latter brought in Gear Fourth, and that was the payoff on the suspense. Not only that, but we had that whole ten minute recharge time and Doflamingo chasing Luffy while everybody almost hopelessly defended him.
Jimbei being with the Swirly Hats gets in the way of Bege capturing the Swirly Hats. Also, having Jimbei go away for at least seventy chapters after only being around for an arc or two sucks. Not that Oda won't do it since he had most of the crew leave during the Baratie arc, including Usopp who just joined, but still.

Well sure we can enjoy seeing how they survive impossible struggles. PH and Dressrosa didn't really create that atmosphere though. FI a bit with the ark and the sea kings cause that was bonkers, but I didn't feel much tension in Zou either tbh. I just don't find the fighting action to be a good source of tension in this series lately. With Big Mom's crew it's interesting because that's a step up from what they've fought in the past, and they know they're in over their heads this time. After seeing her introduced in FI, having Doflamingo as a villain made it so that the warlords just felt like pushovers, especially with how easily replaced they are. It was nothing special by that point, so that's why I think it would be fine if Jinbe was in the crew by then. And I didn't find the Enies Lobby fights to be very tense outside Luffy vs Lucci. Escaping the Buster Call, sure. But the fights were ass-pull central, so the tension stemmed more from getting Robin back, Usopp's issues, and escaping.
I thought the clone thing was more cheap than cunning. The birdcage was too dumb for my tastes, no way the whole population managed to save itself that easily. And while we don't know for sure what Luffy will pull off, I don't think it matters since Luffy power ups are kinda boring. Don't even get me started on the ten minute recharge time, that was by far one of the dumbest things in this series.
Just have Jinbe split off with Big Mom's crew to give the others a chance to escape. They end up with Bege, Jinbe ends up on Whole Cake and then it adds an element of bring-back-Jinbe. Jinbe going away for 70ish chapters after only being in the crew for a couple decently long arcs doesn't mean much when Brook got sent off by Kuma in the arc immediately after he joined.
-
It is true that I am easily entertained but I felt the tension that Oda tried to convey pretty much all the time. Except for Fishman Island but it is certainly because I was still watching only the anime weekly at this point.
-
The only tension stems from how things will reach the conclusion, since what the conclusion itself is is known to most of us, except those that still cling to so called death flags. The big exceptions are WB and Ace and most of us saw that coming as well, only not how it would happen.
-

Not… Really. He had a big cool moment in helping Big Mom recover from her first rampage, saving Jimbei out of nowhere, leaving Big Mom,and talking with his crew. But besides that? He's just been... there this whole arc. A basic party member. The arc is still much more heavily focused on Sanji and Linlin's families while Jimbei is more of a side note. He's as significant this arc as Brook has been, basically. Which is still cool, but it feels awkward since every joining arc for a Straw Hat has that particular character practically being the cornerstone of the arc.

… Hmm thats sort of true actually. He didn't show up for about half the arc, but when he did he did have his moments, but as you said it is awkward that he hasn't been the main focus of the arc where he joins. I'm certain Jinbe still has his massive moment to come where he officially joins and starts being drawn on colour spreads, but yeah you are actually right to be honest. Why do you think Oda hasn't given him as much attention?

I don't really know. I think it's a mix of faults in his story pacing nowadays and not really having a way to top Jimbei's prominence in Fishman Island or the blood transfusion scene. Which I don't really find to be a proper excuse given how Totland is literally the land of supposed racial equality and Jimbei is all about Human-Fishman equality, so I think Jimbei could have had a bigger role if Oda really wanted him too.

Yeah, now that you mention it, it was a missed opportunity. I remember last time we talked you told me that his flashback wasn't a Jinbe flashback like all the other straw hats flashbacks, but it was more of a Fishman Island flashback. Oda is not following the same procedure anymore for new straw hats joining.
-
Wasn't Robin also just there during Alabasta?
-
Wasn't Robin also just there during Alabasta?
Yes, but her joining was a surprise altogether. Nobody invited her lol. And she ended up getting Water 7/Enies Lobby dedicated to her, alongside Franky and kind of Usopp.
Nami wasn't the biggest focus during Orange Town either. But then she got Arlong Park.
Maybe Jimbei is the opposite of this pattern. Where his big important arc is before he joins, and he's almost an afterthought in the arc he does join. But that just feels weird and underwhelming, especially after waiting so many years for him to get aboard.
