@RomanceDawn I suspect losing the TV deal with Toonami and meager DVD sales were part of the problem, but it didn't help that the dub was hundreds of episodes behind and could not present itself as a viable alternative to the subtitled episodes being simulcast.
Though this is hearsay I've picked up from this thread mixed with speculation on my part. I don't know the full story and whether or not it's even true, I just know conclusively that Punk Hazard forward were brought to us in the Crunchyroll era and there is subtle evidence that it's a bit of a different product now than it was back in the Funimation days. And it's being pushed much more than it was in the past, to the point that I'm surprised the latest arc isn't being simuldubbed.
It's pretty wild how long the gaps were between seasons sometimes. And we would be left wondering if FUNi was losing the rights, etc.
