What the hell, the P5 stuff doesn't make your Original the Character look like Morgana?
@Cyan:

They messed up by not making Original the Character designed with the silver ratio in mind
To hell with Original it's all about that Crispy:ninja:

Yeah now we'll never get to see all those moments involving Knuckles being called stupid, pointless fawning over Amy, and repeatedly pondering your existence while insisting you're human.

wtf is the Oil Ocean Act 2 boss in Mania.
Mania has been great up until this. I even love the two Oil Ocean acts because they flow so well compared to the original and the added elements, like setting fire to the oil with the fire shield and the submarine segments are super cool, but I keep getting randomly crushed in the act 2 boss. 3rd game over already. I love these acts, but I'd like to beat the boss without glitching out and move forward.
My main fear about the game was that it would feel fangameish (bad level design, mostly) and the remixes would be lazy copy&pastes, but they're more like brand new (and improved) acts of the stages. I love the bouncy gel in Chemical Plant Act 2, the Marble Garden elements in Stardust Speedway Act 1 and how the lightning shield is used in Flying Battery. The bosses are some of the best in the games I've played. Almost every single one of them has been unique from the other, even if they're easy and there has been none of the pacing problems as with Marble Zone, Labyrinth Zone, Sandopolis or none of the cheapness of Metropolis and.. Oil Ocean Zone.
The new stages are obviously the highlight, all of Studiopolis, Press Garden and Mirage Saloon is excellent, even the Sky Chase segment because it had a great boss and great (even if short) train sequence.
But I'd like to not glitch out in the Oil Ocean Zone boss and actually beat the game. The boss itself even is cool. I just keep getting randomly crushed or die from falling into the oil.
Edit: Made it to Titanic Monarch and Game Over'd there. Hydrocity and Lava Reef are the laziest remakes. The boats and bubbles are an alright gimmick and I really like Lava Reef act 2 for it's layout, design and music, but those felt like the least changed. Lava Reef's bosses weren't all that cool, either.
But it's definitely a great game, which is wierd to say about a Sonic game. I love the Advance series, the Rush series, Colours and Generations are solid games in my book, but they had level design problems and not as solid controls. The worst Sonic games I've played are actually 3D Blast and Heroes, which are only okay, so I haven't really experienced "bad" Sonic all that much myself (I also only have a Wii, so I'm limited to PC releases).
I'm one of those who has CD as my favorite classic game (currently tied with Sonic Mania), especially after the improvements of the 2011 version. Yeah, there's some level design problems and the original had the strange clunky spindash, but I love the style of it. It's a case of "favorite despite the flaws", I guess. Mania just made me happy by taking that Sonic CD style and combining it with everything good from all the other classics and refining it.
Now, if there'd be a whole game of just the new stages from Mania, with the same level of polish and the same quality of level design, that'd probably end up being my definite favorite.
Sonicu-kuuuuuuuun.
Finally beat Hydrocity. Looped a bit in act 2 and the boss, while really creative, kinda screwed me over with the air bubbles. You have to hit him to make sure you get one. (also kept losing Blue Sphere and my 100+ rings, rip >_>)

did Eggman's VA record these lines before he died, or am I dumb and it's a soundalike?
edit: lol did I post the same thing?
He would have had to record his lines two-three years ago since he died in January 2015. So I doubt it.

then that is a REALLY convincing soundalike.
@Count:
More convincing than Japanese James Woods?
Japense James Woods has all the benefits of James Woods and none of the horrible human being parts.
The same trailer again, but with Subtitles.

Didn't Eggman also brag about taking over the world in three days at the start of Sonic Heroes? Then again, that was really Metal Sonic. So…
! STRANGE ISN'T IT?
Speaking of Sonic Heroes, whatever happened to Metal Overlord?
Speaking of Sonic Heroes, whatever happened to Metal Overlord?
he broke, more or less
Speaking of Sonic Heroes, whatever happened to Metal Overlord?
Metal Sonic reverts back to normal in the final cutscene after he's defeated in that form. And then shuts off.
I've been binging a lot of Sonic Boom episodes lately and I have to say
normal modern knuckles is just so goddamn plain and boring
where did people get it in their heads that he's cool like this, it's so strange

I want to be excited for this. It looks like an arc ripped straight from the Archie comics… but the last time SEGA did a serious story was Sonic 06.
The same trailer again, but with Subtitles.
But I thought Shadow was the perfect weapon.
Shadow is the ultimate life form.
Infinate is the ultimate weapon.
I bet Infinite is just an alternate version of the create-a-character
followed by something something heroic sacrifice erased from existence
Infinite is the gestalt of the tortured souls of Sonic OCs, driven to evil by the unending pain his existence is.
Shadow is the ultimate life form.
Infinate is the ultimate weapon.
I thought the ultimate life form was a fat space salamander.
Shadow is the ultimate life form.
Infinate is the ultimate weapon.
I thought Emerl was already called the Ultimate Weapon. Not that I expect Sonic Team to care about portable titles lol.
There was also the
! Ultimate Annihilator in the comics that actually killed Robotnik.

Was always very confused as to how the prototype was a stationary giant lizard but the end result was a hedgehog with float shoes

they did some testing with a couple focus groups and found that "angsty hedgehog" tested better with the 8-13 audience than "lizard monstrosity"

And here I was hoping that the spinoff would be called "Biolizard the prototype ultimate lifeform lizard"

They also found those focus groups didn't care about the weird liquid that surrounded him as it caused a number of annoying deaths.
So I finally beat Sonic Mania today and can now discuss this game without worrying about spoiling myself.
Great game, they really nailed it with this one. I don't personally think this is the "FINALLY SONIC IS BACK" game because I liked Generations a lot as well but this one is definitely better and not just a great sonic game but a great game period.
My only major gripe about this game is that there are so many old stages and Generations already did the "let's bring back old levels" concept. I really I'd preferred if it was mostly new stages instead and my favorites stages of this game are the new ones.
Press Garden > Studiopolis > Titanic Monarch > Mirage Saloon for me.
Did anyone catch that
! The true final boss theme is the same as Fist bump from Sonic Forces? This game is littered with references not only to past Sega games but future ones too! Referenception

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how Press Garden even works thematically as a stage. It combines a printing press factor with late Edo Japan and snowy weather/ice block gimmicks. How do all of those things thematically connect other than random whimsy?
It's a cool level visually and musically, don't get me wrong. But what the hell even is Press Garden?
The japanese part is supposed to just be a giant Shinobi reference. Everything about act 2 would fit right in a Shinobi game in aesthetic terms

I get that, but I was talking about how Act 1 and 2 connect in terms of level trope themes.
wtf is the Oil Ocean Act 2 boss in Mania.
I actually loved that boss but I didn't glitch out in it like a lot of people seem to be doing. I guess they fixed that in the PC version…?
That said I hate Oil Ocean act 1 boss. Such a stupidly designed fight

A printing press factory being close to a forest that they can use it to make more paper makes perfect thematic sense to me. And gimmick-wise, do both acts need to be connected somehow? I think it makes it even better that they're so different from each other. It makes them more memorable

A Japanese-styled forest of all places though? And the snow/ice theme is another theme that doesn't feel like it connects.
They don't need to be connected. I'm only questioning the thought process behind how this stage was inspired. It feels weird how it's the only zone with two almost completely different. Which is a cool and fun twist, but still weird to me.
I hope Sonic Mania 2 has more references and tributes to other Sega franchises. They could do an Outrun/Super Hang-On/Crazy Taxi stage, a Jet Set Radio stage, Alex Kidd stage, Ristar/Tempo stage… the list of neglected Sega IPs is bottomless.

Well the japanese-style forest is just supposed to be the Shinobi callback. It's not really supposed to have any connection to act 1 I guess, they just really wanted a Shinobi-like level lol
And the snow part seems like it's just an excuse to use the ice gimmick of that level? And don't Sakura trees usually blossom in snowy areas anyway? Maybe it wouldn't make sense to have a forest like that not be in a snowy area

Probably lol.
They do? I have no idea. I don't have an issue with there being a snowy cherry blossom feudal Japan stage so much as it comes right after the printing press propaganda factory. It all feels like so much. Like they wanted to tack on a bunch of level tropes for the sake of including those level tropes even though they don't intuitively flow. Which is fine in the end, especially when I love both music tracks for the zone. I only wonder how the idea pitching session for that went.

They have to be careful not to overload a game with too many references and forget to actually make the game good. I thought the Heavy Magician fight came dangerously close to being like that
I have the PC version. Crushing really is the biggest enemy in Mania for me. Oil Ocean Act 2's boss isn't a bad boss, but the crushing in it is. I still haven't beaten the Super Sonic boss partially because certain platform sections in Titanic Monarch that crush you if you're even just a little bit close to being between two platforms.
So I have to keep playing through Titanic Monarch, which is pretty long and is in general a stage I don't like replaying too much.
The other part is that I can't figure out the pattern for the Heavy in that stage and keep dying. I lost like 11 lives trying to beat it because for some reason I can't find an opening without getting hit, lol… and it doesn't even feel that tough. I feel like it could be beaten pretty easily, but it's frustrating to restart Titanic Monarch from Act 1. Farming like 50 lives would probably help.
So my two criticisms of the game (aside from the big I'd like all the stages to be new criticism) would be the lives system and the collision detection, I guess. I'd like to select individual acts and the crushing stuff to be fixed.
I'm sad you don't seem to be able to do the Super Sonic Blue glitch in the PC version.
Cousin of mine got the PC version for me as a Birthday persent. So got a chance to play it and, well yeah, pretty much the Sonic of yesteryear as I remember it with some new tricks. Nothing I can really say that hasn't already been said about how fun it is, seeing all the referneces and callbacks. The music absolutely rocks (no surprise, been a long time Tee Lopes fan, so nice to see his stuff in an offical game). Controls like a dream (if my PS3 controller can read it, why are these programs for this thing so fickle on PC?). I didn't have much trouble with it for the most part though struggle a bit with the special stages, I only got three of the emeralds on my first playthrough and stuck on the fourth one, I can never seem to catch up to that UFO before I run out of rings, urrrgh!
I do wish there was more original stages, I had a blast in Studiopolis and Press Garden, but they always seem to end so quickly. Mirage Saloon especially, for a stage that was touted in previews, I was surprised how fast I got to the end of it. Even the flying section didn't seem that long, odd. That said through some of levels do tend to drag, I don't mind exploring and all but there were points where I kept wondering when the end goal was coming up. Not much of a fan of the blue spheres either, both back then and now. I appreciate getting medals for extra content but why did it have to be through this bonus game. And finally, when it comes to the ending, it feels very rushed too and this was one of the more story driven entries. I'm guessing they ran low on budget but oh well.
Gripes aside, I do love it and glad to finally have it in my collection, hopefully will be able to play the extra modes and get the emeralds on a later playthrough. If they do make a sequel, I do hope it has more original content. This was a fun game but felt like a test Sega was putting on the developers if they can handle the blue blur similarly how they tested Dimps with the Rush series, hence why everything felt so safe with the returning stage. By the acclaim, they passed with flying colors, so hopefully Sega will give the team the go ahead for a new outing with the training wheels off so to speak. Till then, looking forward to Sonic Forces!

I don't know if this is happening to you but some people are getting crushed out of nowhere in that fight in ways that make no sense. If you're getting crushed by being below the platforms as they drop down which is the way it's supposed to be, I feel that's entirely fair

Yeah, the crushing collision detection is wonky but I think that's the way it was in the genesis games too. Guess they couldn't figure out how to tweak it and make the crushing deaths feel fairer
I had a lot more trouble with the Dr Octopus suit before it. He was the only one that gave me a game over so far. I do think the super sonic fight is pretty tough though and does it really send you all the way back to TMZ act 1 if you get a game over? Not even Sonic 3 did that with Doomsday, that's pretty harsh
Look who's getting his own Sonic Forces DLC episode.
Sega going for that edgy money.
