@Cyan:
Mist turns into a healbot on a horse so she's a much better long-term investment than Rhys.
To add to this, Rhys is the only unit you'll get capable of using Light magic. It's definitely not necessary considering that every unpromoted mage you get extremely viable, but it's something to keep in mind when making the choice.
I always go for Mist, also because of the fact she gets to jump in along with Ike during the mini-map with the Black Knight fight. Having her actually be strong in there is super valuable to focusing Ike's efforts.
Also, give her a lemon sword and she'll be a monster.
is the lemon sword even in PoR
i don't actually remember any magic swords in that game, just the Flame Lance and Bolt Axe

Ah, you're right, I'm thinking of the Sonic Sword. For some reason I confused them as the same.
Just as I'm getting fed up with Clive's craptastic growths and resulting level ups, the game drops another Paladin into my lap with higher bases and growths? Don't mind if I do, game. Sorry Clive, but I'm benching you for your girlfriend.
what the game doesn't tell you is that Clive is actually a joke character
Why do you think he's so ready to hand off leadership to Alm?
what the game doesn't tell you is that Clive is actually a joke character
The game sort of acknowledged how inferior Clive is to Mathilda in a support conversation.
I…there was...how did that work?
Finally beat Ninja Hell on Lunatic while spamming Rescue to keep Saizo alive. My entrance into Kotaro's chamber immediately went south after Niles missed a pair of 80% shots on the first ninja and I messed up my extraction strategy, but then I went hail mary and just focused Kotaro. Hit three ~50% attacks and made it out with minimum XP skipped.
Time to start splurging on Heart Seals and legal skills in anticipation of kids.
Whoops. In trying to fight off everyone on the left (and get the houses), I wasted too much time to get Zihark, since the Black Knight was hot on our tail. Oh well. Next chapter is Jill, who more than makes up for it.

Right now I have no complaints with Ilyana and Soren (Adept is hella useful), but the former has been hitting a lot harder.
And I thought an Arms Scroll would raise ALL of the anima ranks for her, but only Thunder…..whoops.

This is kinda why I wanted to raise her up XD
Man shadow dragon is really ugly, so to go to Gaiden chapters you pretty much have to slaughter your army.
Are the gaiden units at least good enough to justify killing more than half your army?

Ha, no.
The giadens in Shadow Dragon are not worth the cost to get to them.
@Cyan:
Ha, no.
The giadens in Shadow Dragon are not worth the cost to get to them.
But do more than 5 of the regular units justify keeping them?
The one gaiden chapter I would really consider, Smiley, is the last one. Unless you're particularly attached to Gotoh, using Naga is pretty cool, and the map itself is comparatively fun. Plus with the Aum staff you don't lose Tiki permanently.
Whoever in devlopment of Shadow Dragond decided the only way to get to the side chapters was to sacrifice your characters to reach them should have been dropkicked in the head.
It was a ballsy idea to turn the one basic instinct of Fire Emblem players (no one gets left behind/soft reset is my homeboy) on it's head.
Immensely dumb, but ballsy.

I thought the Black Knight never stepped away of his spot.
Black Knight moves on his own in Hard mode. Easy and Normal he'll only move from his spot if someone enters his range.

What happens to the guys who did Gaiden's maps, Thracia 776, and the more cringey parts I've heard about Roy's game?
well Kaga's off living in a cave somewhere, making voodoo dolls of any person he sees even near an axe
can't say anything about Roy Game though
Talk about Roy's game, why did they decide every good unit you can recruit is given unpromoted at level 1?
Or for that matter, who decided the throne tiles would make anyone on them able to dodge pretty much everything, making boss fights last stupidly long amounts of time?

Gaiden's maps: An inverted atomic drop.
Thracia 776 in general: A Stan Hansen Lariat as stiff as he can make it.
Sword of Seals: Genichiro Tenryu chops to the chest followed by a Guh Punch.
Throne tiles in FE6 give what, 3 Def + 30 avoid?
It's awful :^)

How far are you in Seals? I know you're exaggerating about the levels of good unpremoted characters, but there are also probably 4 decent prepromotes you get later that have their uses.
The thrones have stupidly high bonuses, but support and crit bonuses get silly too. Abuse the crap out of them!

Haven't had the chance to play at all since that time you were watching. So I did the next chapter earlier today, and it took me an ungodly amount of time to kill the enemy general with Lugh and Lilina. Hence my comment, Lilina came in at level 1, and then Wendy (Gwendolyn? w.e.) came in at 1 too. At least random mercenary was at 3, but that still doesn't help much.
In terms of supports I haven't gotten that many. Roy and Lilina and Lugh and Chad. Haven't come close to deciding what pairings I want particularly since it's hard this early to even know who I'll use. I'll probably do Noah and Fir since I mean to use Fir, but aside from those two I don't really know the rest. It also doesn't help this game doesn't have that one comfy support menu from FE7. I wish we could have had the japan thing of playing this game first and then the improvements… it feels rough going backwards.

Guess what level Fir comes in :ninja:
I'm sure you know that Lilina is a walking nuke, but Wendy's not exactly worth using. She's slightly faster than her knight buddies at the cost of being worse at doing actual General work. Oujay, though. He's the Raven to Dieck's Harken, but with a bit less strength and a lot more luck. You're heading to axe country next so there's opportunity to train him if you want.
As far as supports go, Dieck can gel with any of Thany, Rutger, and Clarine well. Lilina and Gonzales is super cute. Anyone from the same country can usually interact too, as I'm sure you know.
If you ever happen to use Ashtol, all of his non-Wendy supports are extremely good.

Yea, I looked up Fir long ago and fully expect that. Also expect Sophia to be super under-leveled, which sucks since I'm expecting Raigh to be significantly better but after heroes I grew to like Sophia and dislike Raigh (I pulled him so many goddamn times…)
I'm giving Wendy the benefit of the doubt so far out of liking her design and not really liking the other guys too much. I miss Oswin. And yea, training Oujay, still catching up but already doing work, had to give him an iron sword to make sure he could actually double.
Lilina's having amazing growths so far, and is at B support with Roy already so it's disgusting. I'll probably give the A support to Sue because I want to use her and her other supports require me to either have two nomads or use characters I don't want to.
Part of me wants to still also use Lugh just because he's so great, and with chad they just do so well together. But idk how much space I'll have for sages.
It's kind of sad being interested in all these characters and then I look around online and I happen to be choosing all the less optimal options. But their designs <_<
Or that situation where some characters just don't have viable supports, it seems.

Sophia's problems aren't just that she's criminally underleveled, they're also that she's so waifish she's taking a -2 speed penalty just from Flux. That's a character with 2 Skill and 2 AS halfway through the game. Sophia will rarely hit and never double, ever.
Depending on how comfortable you feel about rotating out characters for some chapters, you can definitely run two sages and up to like five or six magic users. The largest maps allow a deployment of 16-18 units so you've got plenty of room to sample characters. On Normal the game isn't hard enough to really require optimal playing, and that means that you don't need to have all the best support options either. Don't feel bad about using who you like, unless it's Marcus or Cecilia.
Also, baby Wendy like crazy on 8x because she's going to have a real rough time in the next couple chapters.
There is this guy on Youtube that turned Wendy into a freaking monster.
To add on what Jabberwok said, IIRC Roy/Lilina is the fastest support in GBA Fire Emblem, and Roy's fire affinity boosts Lilina's already potent magic. If you're going to use Wendy, she has fire support + supports with Lilina too. Double the nukes :D

Here's my status for PoR. Play by play!
Chapter 12: Ravens are 2 fast (they doubled Oscar and one-rounded Mist, so I had to make a box formation). Wind magic is supposed to be effective yet the alleged effectiveness feels like regular damage because Wind has low might. Recruited Jill, and used the handy Laguzslayer on Ike.
Chapter 13: Honestly? One of the hardest maps I had to do. On my first two tries, Astrid died on turn 1 because green units suck, so I had to improvise - Marcia rescued the worthless peon next to her, and Titania filled the gap. Gatrie didn't do much when I got him; just rescuing annoying soldiers and tanking the boss for lulz.
Marcia and Jill ferried Sothe around to pop the chests (since Volke's services add up), but the ravens opened two of them, lucky I took them down. I know their AI was set to look for the treasure, but I had to bank on Oscar/Astrid not missing just to kill an annoying one in the middle. Also Titania took some major punishment from a myrm crit, luckily the boss was focused on offing green units.
I gave her some levels in the base, but Astrid's Paragon is stupidly good, to the point where most kills will net her a whole level. Definitely using her.
Chapter 14: Fog of war, bleh. But I managed this one on the first try. Lost one of the villages to the brigand, but oh well. Makalov, in his infinite wisdom, ended up attacking his own sister, and would've bit the dust had she had more strength. Free steel sword get.
Now, I didn't have the whole party in range to take down the boss, I was mostly being careful, strolling through. Ike exposed him, I stupidly chose to have Marcia attack a mage, so that left three choices. Ilyana pelted him from afar, but Mia had to risk a crit for chip damage, and Jill had to risk a 60% hit (AND getting doubled) to finish him off. Woof.
Chapter 15: I am terrible at getting BEXP, as I decided to clean up house in the desert. Fed Astrid enough levels to catch up to the others, blew 10+ turns getting all of the treasure with Sothe, and put the Laguz Lance to good use. Muarim can be a filler unit I guess but there's no BEXP/patience left to train up Tormod.
Team: Ike, Boyd, Oscar, Mia, Marcia, Mist, Rhys, Jill, Soren, Ilyana, and Astrid. Titania and Lethe are used too.
Supports:
Ike/Oscar C
Ike/Soren C
Mist/Titania C
Mist/Boyd C
Mist/Jill B
Jill/Lethe C
Mia/Rhys C
Mia/Ilyana C
Titania/Rhys C
Titania/Boyd C
Playing path of radiance and not having Nephenee in your party is all sorts of wrong.
@Jabberwok: Wendy has been baby'd to around level 8 or so at this point. It really does seem like they hate knights in this game, giving them to you just in time for axe heavy chapters.
And I already let Marcus die. Just as it should be. Cecilia has a nice design that I like but it goes against my policy of avoiding pre-promotes in normal mode.
Chapter 16 was a piece of cake, although I lost a Physic staff from the thief. Devdan helped me with a tight formation, and the guy is hiliarous.
Chapter 17, the big one, I know why people get irritated at this one, it's a gauntlet of four parts with dumb swamp terrain (Echoes flashbacks). But aside from restarting on the first one due to a sniper gimping Rhys, I nailed them all together…..with some close calls.
Come part 4, while my team is trying to move forward and stop that damned paladin, Tibern and friends show up and start one-rounding the other half of the map, even going as far to craft an opening for Titania to move in and one-round Oliver :)
And now that everyone's promoted, I buzzed through our first snow chapter with no trouble at all, save for that damned Blizzard Sage. (Shinon's base stats were no match for Marcia)
I suppose I'll take a break here and try to finish Echoes already.
@Noqanky:
Playing path of radiance and not having Nephenee in your party is all sorts of wrong.
Alas, if I had more BEXP and/or Oscar was falling behind….
And I already let Marcus die. Just as it should be.
:(
Also, compared to FE7, the prepromotes aren't as good, with Marcus being a prime example, as his younger self stays revelant for a longer part of the game. Cecilia is definitely good to have in a game with nasty wyverns, but her bases are kinda low for a Valkyrie.
What chapter are you on?
You killed Shinon? Boo!
Not that I use him, but still.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also Cecilia is just FE6 Marcus with magic and quite frankly a disgrace to Pent and all of Etruria.
Cecilia had no right being as abysmal as she was but Binding Blade is just that kinda game where a generous 3/4 of the cast is just hot trash
You killed Shinon? Boo!
he's an asshole for treating Ike like shitLol, fielding lv. 1 Rolf.
Maybe next run (whenever that is) when I try out Kieran, Neph, and Mordecai.
Tsk, You say trying out like Nephenee's not already known to be an amazing unit that stands in a field and kills everyone
Meta's already using Oscar
who can quite frankly turn out better thanks to the blessed D O U B L E E A R T H A F F I N I T Y
plus he gets more training time so if you're really gonna go for the safer option, Oscar's your man. Neph is still in the top three spear users though. Her, Oscar, and Marcia are all god-like
You can't have too many spears.

I feel like such a noobie when I see you people talking about elements and things. I never did a support based on that, I decide supports based on which characters I like better/want to see bonding. Up to this day I still have zero idea what elements do and the bonus I can get from different supports… and this is coming from someone who is a fan of the franchise since FE4.
p.s.: this also applies to picking units. I simply use everyone at least until they are promoted (I feel bad if I leave an unit unpromoted by the end of the game - similar to how I used to evolve every pokémon in my boxes -, as if I would be crippling them and dooming them to death if they were left in a weaker state) and then keep going with my favorites and rotating the others. Growth rate!? HA! I'M GUFFAWING IN CASUAL LANGUAGE!
DID SOMEBODY SAY NEPHENEE!?!
That's 100%! Welcome to Crimea, partner!

I play like this, though at the least I like to plan out who hooks up with whom to make sure no one is lonely. Works out well usually. I also avoid the rotating, I really enjoy a core group of units, much like in Pokemon I stick to my main main group.
On the topic of PorR, to me Oscar is classic solid Paladin. Meanwhile Nephenee is what happens when you make an excellent swordmaster and give them lances. And to me Swordmasters are always the most hype.
On that topic of Swordmasters, everyone loves Mia but Zihark was always the best one for me. Felt like the Joshua of PoR.
To be fair, you can probably manage using any one of your favorite characters in PoR and RD, with the exception of the TRULY awful characters. And those that are truly awful, you need to baby-sit a ton to make decent (namely characters like Meg and Fiona). As long as you have a few powerhouses like Nephenee and Gatrie, you can pull off any team. God knows, I gotta throw in Ranulf, Lucia, and Janaff just because I love them.
So the issue of Mia vs Zihark feels more like an argument of "What would you like to kill your enemy with? A blue gun or a red gun?" At the end of the day, they both end up awesome.
One thing about POR that always stuck me was that you had a playable Berserker, but no Brigand/Pirate/Whatever class was available to the player. Then RD benched poor Largo.
I LOVE elemental affinities in supports, it adds variety due to the different effects -+hit, +crit, +avoid - it makes you consider which ones to pop more carefully.
Ike+Oscar, for example, give each other serious avoidance thanks to double Earth.
It was really nice of Radiant Dawn to give you Bastian on the penultimate chapter and have him be immensely useless because Soren does everything he can but much better.
He's one of the handful of units I've never used by choice in all my Radiant Dawn playthroughs. He's in the special club with Renning, Gareth, Rafiel, Neluchi, Lyre, Kyza (WHY DO YOU EXIST), and Nasir.
Rafiel is the most important character in Radiant Dawn
he's how you recruit Oliver after all

Was Kyza that one Laguz with the oddly anachronistic military uniform?
I used both Zihark and Mia in my PoR playthrough, but I definitely favored Mia. And Neph is excellent, but she's far too tanky to be considered a direct swordmaster parallel. Girl's a champ.

The worst thing about killing Shinon means you miss the base conversation in which he's drunk off his ass.

It's funny, cause PoR managed to give us a soldier, a class that had been neglected for some time. But then they deny us the pirate crew. And mercenaries for that matter, as myrmidon's have completely replaced them.
@S.C.:
Was Kyza that one Laguz with the oddly anachronistic military uniform?
Yes. The same one who would fight with Lyre over their affection for Ranulf.
