I'm betting the only reason it's this big is all of the graphical assets, graphics got a big update this gen
Pokemon Ultra S&M - Let's Minecraft Pikachu and Eevee Quest
-
-
Improved graphics don't make that big of a difference. We are talking about a game that is almost as big as Xenoblade 3D.
For a handheld system, this is insane.
-
This game includes new pokemon, mechanics (including intensive things like that Pokemon Snap feature, even if it's limited to specific locations), presumably more involved plot with cutscenes and direction, more detailed environments, and a pretty large map. It might be crazy, but I think those things take up data.
-
One solid gigabyte of rideable Ludicolo.
-
@Cyan:
One solid gigabyte of rideable Ludicolo.
I think you mean one solid gigabyte of rideable five Ludicolos at the same time.
-

Yeah, but double? X and Y weren't tiny games either and had 721 pokemon in them. (Event Legendaries, even Volcanion, were ALWAYS in the files)
So, maybe an extra 500-600mb is what most would expect, but outright DOUBLING it?! Makes a lot of people hopeful we're getting a big package here.
Personally, if nothing else, I'm hoping this means we're getting at least 100 new 'mons. I'd hate if we had such a small bump up as X and Y was.
-
Cutscenes alone can pad a filesize tremendously.
The latest Pheonix Wright game is 850 megs, compared to the original trilogy which all three games combined is less than 300, or the previous game (which uses basically the same graphics style) was 550. And that's mostly from fancy animated sequences.
If the pokemons have anything at all graphically intense, that will balloon the size, no question. Size of the map could be a thing, but… graphics alone will do it.
-
Cutscenes and audio is what larger file sizes tell me. Also, consider that this is the first time they localize to Chinese, which means there's also further data that gets used up when it comes to characters for Chinese localization.
And then consider also things like this game pretty much having pokemon snap included.
-
It looks like there's a lot more going into the scenes, too, and a lot more of them in general. Just look at the stuff shown off from the beginning of the game, where you see the walrus man throwing out the pokemon you can choose from. These cutscenes probably have less of a relative load than in other games, since they can just import models into them, without much further animation (besides things specifically made for these scenes, which we're sure to see a lot of), but they each require memory space for the 3DS to pull from when they play.
Rideable pokemon, the Pokemon Snap stuff, that new multiplayer plaza feature, the updated pokemon ami thing, the new battle features and systems, all of which is in addition to the new Pokemon, and all the other systems and pokemon taken from gen 6 (for which they've probably tweaked systems, and updated models, so they'll likely take up even more space than before).
I don't have any reference for game programming and the memory loads all this stuff has, and they really should include more postgame stuff than gen 6 had, but I wouldn't go about underestimating how much space all these features and updates take up. I think saying that double file size has to mean double game size is a little naive.
-
I don't think Double Game is realistic, but I do hope this means at the very least that we get a bigger game in general. Even if double filesize means the game is only 20% bigger than X and Y Content wise, that's still a fair increase.
My biggest issue is just… I want a bigger Pokemon increase from Gen 6 to 7 than there was from 5 to 6. Gen 6 had the smallest new Pokemon Pool of any game. It was only like 76.
-
I mentioned map size in the first post you responded to. So far the world looks bigger than Kalos.
As for the pokemon increase, did that one unverified leak say that the Alolan forms were included or not? The writing was kinda bad and unclear. If they're in addition to the new ones, then that's 100+ noobs. If they're included, then it's only 60+ fully new ones.
-
I will not try to get my hopes up just because the game is huge.
I am trying to keep my feet on the ground here… but, just saying, with 3,2gb they could easily save a few mb to fit Mega Butterfree and Alolan Venomoth in. And Mega EVERYTHING!!! OMG!!! EVERYTHING IS GETTING A MEGA!!!
-
There was a leak saying something around 128 new species.
X & Y had the smallest batch mainly because of the graphic leap. And don't get me started on the fact they had to redesign all the species from the 5 previous gens into full 3D models, each with two to up to 5 different battle gestures. That had to be one hella colossal feat.
-
I personally love cutscenes in games. So it is pretty welcoming knowledge that the game might have more of them.
-

Seriously doubt at this point there's any new mega. Particularly with the whole tidbit of mega evolution being banned from this year's VGC and the reintroduction to mega evolution taking place without showcasing anything new about it.
-
The cutscenes seem to be "in game", so nothing prerendered, just camera movement and "do this pose" and "say this thing" and "change music now".
The mons might have like 3-5 models each, battle, field, box, amie and snap.
Even with uniform models for trainers, textures are wildly variex.
Alola seems large.
Sound actualy takes a lot of space.

People always hold that against it… but counting ORAS, the gen had 48 megas. In gen 2 or 4 those would have just been different evolutions like Togekiss or Magmortar, and counted as new mons entirely and we'd be at about 110, which while not amazing, is still a decent gen size. (And I wish some of those mons had just been actual new forms)
Same with the Alolan forms. They're familiar but given the typing changes, movesets, stats, and abilities... are basically brand new critters.
Unless its a super tiny gen, the dex size is going to be over 800 mons now... and while us old timers always want more and more... at some point you DO have to slow it down some so it's not completely insane for newcomers. (Which is of course why they have regional dexes and limit it to about 150-250 in any given main game) Somewhere along the way you have to concede to marketing and new players and the sheer ammount there is and stop making less. (And also consider how many mons are just ignored entirely like Purugly or the Clampearl/Huntail/Gorebyss family, or Solrock and Lunatone,,, which had better do something in Sun and Moon.)
Maybe at some point they'll feel the need to do another B/W refresh with only brand new things in an area for a whole game, but as long as they're mixing in old ones? It's not surprising that future gens are 100 or less, with some old things remixed along the way.

Two new episodes of Generations are out, I really enjoyed these two.
-
Thought these two new episodes were solid too.
Gold/Silver and Heartgold/Soulsilver are probably the best games of the series and even a rather inconsequential, cut-scene-esque bit of its story is interesting.
Eusine and Looker are two characters that I'd absolutely would love to see more about.
They are characters that have their own goal and really contributes to world-building element of the series.
Moreso than Elite Four and some Gym Leaders, they feel like people that live in this world not just to serve us the protagonists. What other characters did this in Pokemon?
I can't name that many and I think Looker is the best example.
Really hope to see him again in Sun & Moon. -
Gold/Silver are definitely the best games in the series. Always thought so.
Although screw Ho-oh, Lugia is better.
-
I think Black and White are also pretty great.
Gold and Silver get points for feeling like two games in one though, since you can go to Kanto.
-
Replaying soul silver made me realize how flawed gold and silver were. They are really hype games, and the work done is fantastic, but the city and level progression never felt quite as well-placed as something like Hoenn does on a replay. So much grinding in Soul Silver, particularly to cut the gap in levels to face Red.
I find Gen V to be the best. The story is solid, the progression and pokemon available feel balanced and varied, the world feels large and the enemies and gym leaders and elite four and champion all are actually actively involved in the world, and then there's B2W2 being actually engaging sequels to an already engaging game. Instead of just a throwaway third version that makes the original two null.
-
Indeed. Though I admit ho-oh makes up for the fact that moltres looks less like a Phoenix and more like a rubber chicken on fire.
I do wish they went with a different typing. He an aquatic dragonbird but they make him psychic right after they introduce two new types to weaken psychics. Does he learn any psychic moves? I want to say recover, but any others?
G/S get points for catching us up to our old favorites. Seeing how we changed them, but they doing that in the main story now. Oak's cousin, prof sycamore assistants, the elite 4 who was introduced in battle frontier.
-
Psychic, Psyshock, Dream Eater, Skill Swap … Reflect and Rest I think, if you want to count those. Also, Recover is a Normal move.
But I agree, Lugia should have been a Water type.
-
Only thing I remember doing with Lugia was Aeroblast.
-
People may bash Gen IV a lot, but it was that generation that fixed that stupid attack and sp.attack exclusivity to type-moves instead of physical and special attacks as it should have been in Gen III. Also Gen IV made Bug-Types actually useful and introduced 3 of my favourite pokemon of all time.
-
I remember nothing of Gen IV aside from considering dropping pokemon entirely after playing it. All other regions I've replayed at some point in some way, so I've had a chance to revisit opinions for those, so gen IV remains the red-headed stepchild of the series for me.
It also introduced the likes of bidoof, purugly, and wormadam. So terrible.
-

Nah screw bland Lugia, Ho-oh is the best legendary ever(jk I also like Lugia, but Ho-oh is still my favorite since gen 2).

Wow, I didn't realise people bashed Gen 4.
I only got back to Pokemon about a year ago (left it when I finished Emerald and LeafGreen like 100 times) and thought Platinum and Soulsilver were amazing games.
I love Gen 4. -
As Kage said, Gen IV did make some improvements to the Pokemon formula like getting rid of the attack and special attack exclusivity, but the actual game and story and the Sinnoh region are really forgettable.
-
Gen 4 has a special place in my heart. I wasn't playing Pokémon when gen 3 came out and only got ruby because I got a gba sd for xmas and its the only gen I got only one game for, but I got back in when gen 4 was announced. Plus gen 4 gave us the physical special split, my favorite starter, Torterra, and two of my favorite Dino's as fossils. I'm even okay with the old gen evolutions.
-
I like some of the new Pokemon and changes to the battle formula but overall I think gen 4 was really lackluster
-
I can't deny there's some good in gen 4, I just can't remember any of it.
-
I preferred Gen IV over Gen III, and I haven't even come close to ever changing my mind.
Was the story memorable? No, not really. But, I'll be honest, no story in Pokemon ever really has been for me. I found Sinnoh to be memorable if only because it was the first region with snow! There were some bad Pokemon… Just as there have been in every single generation.
The one thing I really didn't care about DPPT was the music. Not memorable to me at all. I say the same thing about Gen V, though.
-
Ironically, if there's one thing from Gen IV that stuck with me was the Cynthia battle theme. Cynthia deserves a more interesting region.
-
Gen IV might have had the physical/special split, but DPPt also had the stupid idea of having zero fire Pokemon outside of the Fire starter and Ponyta. I remember that the Fire gym leader didn't even have all Fire Pokemon because there were so few.
I've only played one game from that side, Pearl, once, and I got bored enough that I didn't finish it. HGSS are awesome though, weird grinding issues and gym leader levels aside.
-

Platinum improved this somewhat with the addition of the Magmar line, the Houndoom line and a gift Eevee. Which is still a ridiculously lackluster selection, but at least you're not permanently stuck with Ponyta.
Personally I really love Platinum. It might feature some of the worst designed Pokémon ever, but the overall gameplay experience is just really solid to me. I've played through the game twice (once on a regular run, once on a Nuzlocke) and despite how infuriating the latter was, I can't deny that I still had a lot of fun with it. (It also cemented my opinion that Gyarados is one of the most absurdly awesome Pokémon in existence.) Whereas Gen 5… I dunno, for some reason I've always found those games kinda frustrating to play. I think it might be down to how about the only decent way to grind is to beat up Audinos, who can be really annoying to find in most routes. (Like, have fun spending all your money on Repels… and then running into Emolga half the time when shaking grass finally does show up.) -
Platinum fixed the lack of fire types by giving us Magmar and one of the most awesome in that category: Houndor. Plus it also gave players early access to the pseudo-legendary of this Gen prior to the second gymn.
D/P may have had some issues, but those were mostly fixed in the third release.
The one thing I truly loathed from these releases was how much they abused of the HMs. The worst part is you only have room for 6 pokemon max, and the number of HM you were forced to use almost doubled that number.
-
By the way, epic promotion trailer that was originally made for japan was stealthily localized and released:

Hm, I should really go back and play Platinum some time. Crystal was the favorite of my childhood where I shamelessly used Tyranitar, Dragonite, and Suicune all on the same team along with a max level Meganium. No regrets. And Emerald is the Pokemon of my adolescence, where I filled the National Dex and conquered the Battle Frontier.
So yeah, third releases have a pretty damn good track record. Plus Houndoom is awesome.

Flint was an Elite Four, not a Gym Leader.

Man the music… It's like my first time hearing this music and yet it's already reached maximum nostalgia level.
Feels so pure and awesome etc etc -

I bet Ash-Greninja will be Shiny Locked and a lot of people will waste time trying to make it Shiny

(Some) Information we're getting from CoroCoro this week:
! Basically the Riddler (this guy has been very reliable in the past with Sun & Moon information; VERY, i.e. Salandit leaker) translated it to Chinese and then folks on Bulbagarden translated it to English, basically unmasked Type: Null is Dark/Normal with Mold Break, Alolan Persian is Dark/Fairy, and there's an Alolan Ekans-line that's Fighting-type–-we had a similar rumor about a Fighting-type Ekans last time around interestingly enough.
-
Types we're still missing (aside from legendaries, Megas and Formes, but counting Alola Forms):
[hide]Pure Flying (Tornadus)
Fighting / Rock (Terrakion)
Ghost / Psychic (Hoopa)
Ghost / Dragon (Giratina)
Steel / Fire (Heatran)
Steel / Dragon (Dialga)
Fire / Water (Volcanion)
Fire / Electric (Heat Rotom)
Grass / Electric (Mow Rotom)
Electric / Ice (Frost Rotom)
Electric / Dragon (Mega Ampharos)
Psychic / Dragon (Latias)
Ice / Dragon (Kyurem)
Dragon / Fairy (Mega Altaria)Count: 14[/hide]
Type combinations that do not exist whatsoever:
[hide]Normal / Poison
Normal / Rock
Normal / Bug

Game Freak has somewhat caught up with the newly introduced type combinations in Gen VII but there's still so much unused potential. They have used ~83% of all available type combinations, ~75% if you don't count Legendaries etc.

Ambivalent about the other one. I need to see first and then I'll decide what I think. When does CoroCoro come out? This weekend?
