Someone please animate Rose and Pearl singing this

Damn this show for making me cry all the time :l Honestly, I don't know how they do it, I don't cry that much for anything else.Well, hopefully they didn't spend the whole 10 million…that's no easy feat.
-
Unless I missed something I don't think that's what happened. They could have easily given Greg a smaller amount if they wanted his new wealth to be a one-episode thing.
Yeah I had to think twice about that post, but the bill must have been pretty significant.
-
Wow, I actually hated Drop Beat Dad. It is a long long long time since I could say that about an episode in this series, so I wasn't expecting it. It felt just like the 8 first episodes, when I was hating every minute of it and just wanted to skip the rest of the episode (before the 9th episode came and suddenly I fell in love with everything from then on). I don't know, it was just so… obvious and poorly done, it seemed to lack the subtlety of this serie. Also, I couldn't get over the fact Marty looked like a Simpsons character instead of a SU one, so I had this feeling that something was off the whole time.
Good thing, though: we got one more part of the ending theme in Sugar's voice, so just one more to go before we have it complete. Been waiting for it 'cause I really like it.Hopefully the reactions point on Mr. Greg being much better
-
I can see why this episode seems to be Crewniverse's favorite. Almost made me cry at work
-
Really good episode.
! Pearl's pretty much completed her character arc; she's come to terms with her feelings for Rose and Greg, Steven is developing well, and she's trained Connie to take over her role.
! Now watch them kill her off to end the season; hence the sad Steven in that one image. -

Hehe, I didn't dislike it, but I agree with you that the outcome was very predictable. And yes, Marty looks a bit like a younger, artificially hip Mr. Burns.
-
Gosh dang it. This show is so good at exploring themes that are quite mature, but in a beautiful, heart-warming and kid-friendly way. I haven't cried this much over a SU episode for a long time.
-
Just when I menage to recover from the loss of Rocinante comes It's Over Isn't It to gut punch me right in my feels organ. Gosh darn it SU, you're a cartoon you supossed to make people laugh not feel them blues.
-
Ok, I cried :| great episode.
! I'm afraid Ubiq is right because it seems like Pearl is complete now as a character. On the other hand, I guess the same could be said about Garnet. Unless I am forgetting something, Amethyst is the one still with loose ends.
! Anyways, despite liking the three CG a lot, I think Pearl is my favorite by a small margin, so I love whenever she is focused on and this episode was no different. The comedy parts were also on point (love the perfect timing of the pianist bit), and one thing I really liked was it was mentioned Rose had other men in her life. I REALLY like the idea that the perfect mother/woman didn't had just one man, they are not mutually exclusive things but fiction tend to ignore that. -
Drop Beat Dad was ok. It's always nice to see the beach city residents, and Marty staying a douche was unusual, but welcome. The biggest problem is Marty's design. I get where the crewniverse were going with it, but it's just… ugh.
Mr.Greg was amazing, easily one of the (if not -the-) best episode in the entire series.
! It seems Pearl has finally moved on (and I guess Greg too, in some aspect) so I'm very curious what's in store for her in future episodes. Another thing is Steven. He outdid himself this episode, but somehow he made me really sad. Especially at the end during the car ride, singing "It's over, isn't it" while looking at his gem. Also, there's a debate whether Rose sung a line during the last song or if Steven's VA managed to mimic her voice really well. I can't tell.
-
To me, one of the most frustrating things ever is when there's an episode of a TV show or a movie or anything that everyone seems to think is absolutely amazing. Then you watch and you think it was…good. Not amazing, but good. And it's kind of hard to explain why and you wonder if maybe there's something wrong with you that you weren't able to enjoy it as much as everyone else.
For me, that's pretty much how I feel about Mr. Greg. I mean, objectively, it's a very good episode and there are some really great bits in it, but...
-It seemed a little retcon-y. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I don't recall Greg ever being that aware of Pearl's resentment towards him or having any issues being around her.
-The music continues to be great, but sometimes I feel like lyrics could've used a few more drafts or maybe Rebecca should just hire a lyricist ("It's over, it's over, isn't it, isn't it over, it's over, isn't it, isn't it, it's over, it's over, isn't it over, isn't it over, it's over, isn't it, isn't it, isn't it over?)
-The whole thing just seemed...a bit rushed, I guess? This seems like it should've been a pretty big character arc for both Pearl and Greg and it's apparently resolved with just one song.
So yeah, good episode, but...even though Pearl is still my favorite character, I can't say it made me cry.
-
How anyone can be unaware after the Mic Drop that came after Rainbow Quartz?
-
If Greg didn't pick up on the fact that Pearl halfway hated him for 14 years, then there's no hope for him.
-
I'm just saying, he acted very reserved and cautious around her, but in previous episodes he…didn't.
Pearl herself checks out. But Greg…eh, I dunno.
-
When people have some resentment or unburied hatchets between them, but they're in a position where they still need to get along for other people's benefit, they tend to be almost overly chummy and happy. I've got that issue with a mutual friend and it's been going on for years now. Greg's clearly been trying to break the ice, that's why he asked her to dance with him. He wasn't being cautious at that moment, but he was rejected.

i agree lol. Kinda felt a little ham fisted I think like… "Now you're gonna have the feels.... NOW"
But it's cool if other people were into it, the whole situation of the ep was just kind of random to me I think
-
BTW, anyone else reminded of this by the Mr. Greg song?

! Amethyst is going to be getting another redesign… white clothes this time... for mourning?
! And when you also consider they have Peridot now for science stuff....
I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's the direction they go.To me, one of the most frustrating things ever is when there's an episode of a TV show or a movie or anything that everyone seems to think is absolutely amazing. Welcome to how I feel about Gravity Falls and Undertale. And I feel really bad about that since other people super love the shit out of those things and they just… didn't do much for me. I can see the quality and what's there to like and I enjoyed them okay but ... other people LOOOOOVE them and they just never super clicked for me.
-It seemed a little retcon-y. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I don't recall Greg ever being that aware of Pearl's resentment towards him or having any issues being around her.
Nah, he was definitely aware. It's just not something that was so pronounced that it was on a daily encounter to encounter basis for 14 years. He has past problems with Amethyst too, but they don't rear their head every time they see each other. Same way Pearl wasn't a constant wreck over missing Rose every single time we saw her from the start of the series… it was a subtle thing that cropped up more and more later.
Plus, it seems like the gems sort of took Steven away for training and there were just large chunks of time where he didn't see them at all.
-
BTW, anyone else reminded of this by the Mr. Greg song?
No, but the "Don't cost nothin'" song reminded me of the 90's jingle for San Pellegrino sparkling water. I tried to find it, but I couldn't.
-
Yeah….chalk me as one of those who found this conflict to be forced for the sake of the premise of the episode. Pearl helped Greg fix his truck one time, there's no getting along better than that.
-
Le Hotel was worth every single million. Couldn't hold myself as that one guy booed at Pearl. Speaking of:
! So they settle everything with her just to kill her off now?
Hope this won't happen. -
@TLC:
Yeah….chalk me as one of those who found this conflict to be forced for the sake of the premise of the episode. Pearl helped Greg fix his truck one time, there's no getting along better than that.
The ultimate in interpersonal communication is not, in fact, helping someone fix a truck. That's being a mechanic.
-
! While I might agree that it was handled "fast" as in solved in this episode, this is something that has been simmering in they meet, and was always avoided because both how it made them feel and to avoid hurting Steven. It was solved fast because there wasn't a real feud, they didn't do it knowingly to hurt each other, it was just sort of what Rose wanted. I couldn't see it being extended after it was brought to the front, because while it was a big deal, it was just beyond eachother's control.
-
! Where's Peridot's curly mustache at?
-
! The ending of the episode tonight with Peridot was adorable at the end of the episode.

Even though I love the episode, I can't say i disagree. You're spot on with the weak spots of the episode, and I'd add that Steven was way too mature. I get that he's grown and is following in Rose's footsteps, but some points in the episode he almost felt out of character. It wasn't until i rewatched the episode that I fell in love with it. Most of all I'm happy to see a conclusion to the Rose/Pearl plot.

I LOVED TONIGHT'S EP

Pearl is not gonna die before we get more about her origin story and the conditions of pearls on homeworld is delved into more, I cant see them having rose's rebellion story after pearl dies. Now she could be captured by homeworld of course but I doubt she dies
-
That episode was adorable!
! So many questions! Peridot states that Homeworld has a lack of resources and therefore makes Gems weaker than they should be. Not a minute later Peridot gains her magnetic powers. Was this another lie form Homeworld? Or did Peridot do the unexpected, and develop powers despite being of the wrong type? Is magnetism typical of Peridots? Peridot's comment about shapeshifting will definitely haunt Amethyst, but since she was willing to try it and admitted she couldn't do it, did Amethyst take that into consideration?
-
The people who see it as a possibility, how much of a possibility do you think it is?Practically guranteed to happen, probably gonna happen, 50-50, 25% etc

! Are we for sure it was magnetism, on first watch, so like 30 minutes ago lol, I thought it was telekinesis, although it did move in kind of start stop motion like a magnet. Hmmm
-

! Are we for sure it was magnetism, on first watch, so like 30 minutes ago lol, I thought it was telekinesis, although it did move in kind of start stop motion like a magnet. Hmmm
! All the examples Steven gives on what to use her powers on are metal (jar lid, door knobs, …something else) so I think it's magnetism
-
Hrmm. Steven has grown alot since Jailbreak, and been growing even more throughout season 2(I still consider this season 2). Heck, even the Crystal Gems are much less lax about him doing things on his own or being by himself. The kid's pretty damned mature now, and it's been showing for a long while. It's really bizarre to see his actions in the last episode as out of character, but whatever.
The latest episode was just cute.
! And again, I really like how casually this show deals with the aftermath of terrifying reveals to stuff. Be it learning a wierd power that turns you into a baby(and an old man way earlier in the series), or walking into a place like Rose's Room for the first time. They just go with it and learn pretty quickly, while never really leaning/brooding over the consequences on it for long. It's the kind of pacing I really like : 3
! So yeah, surprised to see Steven got the hang of shape-shifting. And it's interesting that Peridot seemed to have developed esper abilities? Not sure if it's telekinesis or if it's magnetic like Steven said(it be pretty strange if he guessed it was metal related). -
well in steven's birthday, he shifted himself big a long time
-
! Peridot's not complete fodder anymore!

The New Lars leaked ahead of schedule:
! It was really interesting to see a foil to Steven's otherwise above average emotional intelligence. We got an instance where his intervention was intrusive and hurtful, not because he intended it, but because he didn't really know better. I think we also got some really cool perspective on Lars, even if he wasn't conscious for most of the episode. Even though he does put up a front, at the same time that front is sort of him, and he wants to be appreciated for being him. There's this self-discovery going on within him that I realize now is at the center of all of his episodes, and it's hard to tell if he'll end up a decent person through it, which is a pretty complex and interesting thing to feature on a show targeted towards kids. The end of the ep does give a positive spin on his development from here on out and I hope we get to see more of it. Man, Lars episodes make me think a lot more than other ones for some reason, haha.
-
! Possessed Lars: half troll, half decent person, but also kinda creppy lol.

Mr. Greg was beautiful. I thought the lyrics were great, and Pearl's VA had a stunning performance as usual
-
-The music continues to be great, but sometimes I feel like lyrics could've used a few more drafts or maybe Rebecca should just hire a lyricist ("It's over, it's over, isn't it, isn't it over, it's over, isn't it, isn't it, it's over, it's over, isn't it over, isn't it over, it's over, isn't it, isn't it, isn't it over?)
Okay, I know it's late to come back to this, but this comment just didn't sit well with me at all. How is repetition bad lyricism? It has a clear point in this song in emphasizing Pearl's loss and building into the dramatic refrain and having some extra unique lines replacing that wouldn't have done that better. It also gives the song a really memorable hook. Repetition isn't something new to music, either, with concepts like choruses or refrains being all over the place, especially in musicals. The biggest hooks are the bits that repeat and make their way into your mind over the course of the song. The best ones are able to get multiple meanings from the same line (and we get that in this song without it needing to throw it in our face, the idea of Pearl and Rose's relationship being over, Rose's life being over, and her conflict with Greg being over). Plus, the repetition comes up in a couple different parts of the song (it shows up in the refrain, too, especially at the end where she repeats "It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on?") This stuff isn't even new to SU songs: Strong in the Real Way has Pearl and Steven singing the same line consecutively with different meanings, Be Wherever You Are repeats its chorus a lot and replaces one word throughout to get to its core meaning, most of Stronger Than You is Garnet singing "I'm Made of Love," Do It For Her recycles a lot of the same lyrics and gives them different spins by swapping them between Pearl and Connie, etc… Those are just examples from Steven Universe. I could pull examples from al over music and musical theater, too, if you wanted. Beyond the repetition, the lyrics of "It's Over, Isn't It" manages to touch on a lot of different aspects of Pearl's relationship with Rose, apparent or otherwise.
Sorry for the rant, but I just really think the lyricism in this song is great, and Deedee's delivery brings out its full potential. "It's Over, Isn't It" has become my new favorite SU song and I both can't get it out of my head and can't stop listening to it.
-
I'm with Nobody… Sorta not really though... You could definitely make the lyrics more polished. But I do not understand why you would want that. What makes Rebeccas lyrics so great to me are their sincerity, and polishing them could only take away from that.struggles to not post a song of nothing but twelve minutes of a looped line :silly:
-
Okay, I know it's late to come back to this, but this comment just didn't sit well with me at all. How is repetition bad lyricism?
I'd like to clarify that, when I said that, I was specifically talking about this one portion of the song:
It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over?
It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? Now, I consider this a totally subjective issue and I completely understand if you liked the song.
But, to me, that segment was kind of distracting. I understand the concept of repetition and refrains in song, but it's all about execution. I don't mind choruses and lyrics being repeated throughout a song (I mean, that's just basic song structure), but when you repeat something continuously, it can be annoying. Like, that's what kids do to annoy people. You know the end of the song "Message in a Bottle" by The Police where they seemingly endlessly repeat "Sending out an SOS"? For a while, I thought even that was annoying, but it's grown on me. Maybe this song will grow on me to, but for now that segment still bugs me a bit. And, I don't know, maybe some people are just more tolerant to continuous repetition.
And to absolutely clear, I don't think it's a bad song at all. I just think that one segment was kind of distracting and it could've used some improvement.
-

Oh, I just now realized that Rainbow Quartz has all the right amounts of arms and legs. She has four eyes but that part seems to be a fixed thing. Interesting. Also, I shouldn't have opened any spoiler tags.

Pirates of Dark Water, Justice League, and Gargoyles have done the same thing. They trust their audience to keep up.
But ugh, a Lars episode. I get what they're doing and the relationship with Sadie and all but… ugh. Him and Renaldo. I think I express how much I disliked them everytime they get an ep.

Ye same boat. The repetition really helps shift focus towards the rise towards the climax of the song, particularly as the piano becomes more complex when it's introduced. It's meant to repeat to nail down that it's not actually over for her. That's why it's also significant that it comes up at the very end of the reprise of "Don't Cost Nothin'" where Pearl has actually moved on.
But to the point that she could have used more drafts, in fact, Sugar actually spent quite a few different drafts of the song before settling on this one. It wasn't an easy one to write, and I'm quite pleased with what we've got (seeing as it's also my current favorite SU song.

New Lars stuff (also, loved your observations on the episode, Wagumo)
! I really like how imperfect the whole ordeal with Sadie and Lars is, and why thier relationship works. Especially in last night's episode. Like, everyone is town was pretty much open for the idea what Lars would make changes in his life for the better… even if the impression comes off as unexpected/out of nowhere or out of character. And the only one that doesn't like the shift was Sadie. Pret cute. Esp the end bit.
Also. about the song. The repetition works for me since it sorts of drives home Pearl's decent into not moving on. Almost like crying over a lost one, but in song.
-
! Greg's still apparently loaded, Kevin's still a jerkass, and Steven and Connie still make a cute couple. And all was right in the world.
