It's been a while since a chapter made me laugh pretty hard. This page was amazing.

Such a good chapter. Damn the art this week was good.
Oh my God, thank you for posting to this dead thread.
Yes! That was a great chapter and I love how Furudate through the sensei, managed to convince me that it was OK if Hinata couldn't keep playing.
I was absolutely gutted when he was taken off, had a lump in my throat the whole time.
The art was also amazing, especially that one Panel when Hinata looked absolutely angry at the sensei. But I like how grounded this manga is, he had been pushing himself too much and all the signs were there. Its just too bad that a Fever is what took him off the court. Now there is no chance of him making a glorious return like Tsukushima.
I don't see Karasuno winning, but I also think they have to win both for Hinata and to show that they are team that can win without relying on any single person. Its time for everyone else to play at 120% so I expect Tanaka and Asahi to beast the spikes. Tsukushima to be on point with his blocks and Daichi to fully receive every ball he can.
I also think its really great that Kenma is going to checkup on Hinata.
What a great manga.
Hope this thread can be revived.
-
I really hope so too. As you said, the whole sensei speech with Hinata understanding the situation was just heart wrenching. I really hope the team doesn't loose just because Hinata is away.
And yes, this thread needs more love, the last few chapters of this manga, has been by far one of my best reads of the week. -
The thing is, what storyline would have more emotional value? The team losing Hinata and thus losing the match (somewhat burdening the latter with huge guilt) OR the team pulling through without The Strongest Decoy and then losing in the semis together with him (they're not going to win the whole thing, no way).
Personally, I'd go with the latter if only to prove to the readers that Karasuno's team is capable of overcoming a strong foe without Hinata. And I'd bet that the readers would jump at a Bokuto v Hinata semifinal.
-
My biggest problem with this manga right now is that I'm not excited for any future matches. They've already beaten Nekoma, their biggest rival since early on, and Hinata has finally accepted his role as a decoy and stopped living in the shadow of the Little Giant.
I can't help but think that Karasuno losing the current match would be the most natural end for the series. If they continue on to the semifinals and finals, or lose and start a new tournament, I don't see how the series could escape feeling drawn out and redundant. -
I don't think they'll lose. It would be better to prove that it's not just Hinata making a difference in the team. Tsukishima is a petty guy. He'll probably step up. As well the 2nd and 3rd years.

I agree, I think it would be a better story if Karasuno can pull out a win here, only to lose to Bokuto and his team at relatively full strength.
The author has been setting up rematches with the old teams, who have all been upgrading their skills. So I can see Hinata and team losing this tournament and then going on to win it in their second year. This time with Hinata actually exhibiting the qualities of an Ace and Tanaka and Nishinoya being the solid 3rd years.
There are still multiple tough opponents that Hinata can beat. For example, there is Bokuto and his team.
Think about it this way, we never knew about Hoshiumi, the new Little giant, until recently. His team has become one of the best teams Karasuno has faced in a long time. There is always room for the author to introduce new and interesting match types.
Also Hinata might have accepted his role, BUT, he's been growing by leaps and bounds. Now he no longer relies on instinct alone. We see him reading the flow of the game, making the necessary adjustments and reacting accordingly, as proven by his great receives. His recieves have now been conscious and deliberate efforts to help the team, instead of being luck.
Hinata is quickly becoming a legitimate player and I think it would be awesome if we saw him challenge strong teams with his new found skillset, instead of relying on his setter all the time.
Also I am glad that he no longer lives under the shadow of Little giant because it makes him his own person. I don't understand why a character gaining self-esteem and independence is somehow supposed to be a bad thing.
Losing a tournament as a way to end the series is one of the most dumbest moves any author can ever make.

I didn't mean to say it is a bad thing, it's good development for Hinata. However, it is the kind of development you would expect to happen at the very end of the series, not the quarterfinals.
You might think that ending on a loss is dumb, but it has been done before and pretty succesfully, in Weekly Shonen Jump.
I don't think Haikyu is going to end like that, I just feel it might be for the best. Also, the series is on track to becoming the longest running sports series in Jump, I think starting a new tournament this late in the game might be a bit much.

Exactly, instead of ending the series when he becomes strong, we can now see him play on an equal playing field against strong teams.
I genuinely think the author is good enough to make that interesting.Perhaps its been done before BUT man, I would feel so cheated if I invested all this time reading a story only for the main character never to achieve a significant goal.
I have asbsolutely no problem with the manga becoming long. I genuinely love it and the matches are always different and interesting. I guess its a matter of preference, if you love it, you want more of it. If its just ok, you want it to end soon.

Chapter's out…
! First impression is that I'm very disappointed by the author's decision.
I don't know what he had in mind but I can't see what will follow this chapter, whether it's the end of this manga or a continuation into another year, going well for me.
If their tournament was always supposed to end with a defeat, I would rather have it happen against Bokuto's team. Since he's a 3rd year, even if the manga continue into another year, Karasuno will never face him again. -

Since he's a 3rd year, even if the manga continue into another year, Karasuno will never face him again.Yeah I have to agree. Not going up against Bokuto was one of the most disappointing things about this loss.
I just think the author wasn't ready to have Hinata, and by extension Karasuno, surpass the Little Giant Hoshiumi, because Komemadai are more or less the perfect and upgraded version of Karasuno. However, ending the tournament on a loss was always inevitable. Its almost a cliche in sports anime and I think the only one that didn't do it was Kuroko.
Still I'm hyped for the inevitable first years to shake up the team dynamic. Also, I'm thinking Grandpa Ukai might come back to coach after watching Karasuno come so close.
-
Hm, that's unexpected…
For now I'm not sure what the idea behind this result is. That Karasuno can only prevail if the whole team is playing together? That way you could argue that they're not only relying on Hinata but on the team as a whole. Remove one of the core members and the structure starts cracking. I suppose something like that could be the case...
And as koma said, Kamomedai has been built up as an evolved version of Karasuno, making me think that this result was inevitable and they'll go on to win the whole thing.
Aside from the goodbye chapters and the inevitable tears, I'm already looking forward to the semifinals and Bokuto tearing it up. :')
-
I wasn't expecting the other injury. That's a bit disappointing. I guess the author didn't want it to feel like the lose was solely to Hinata not being there. I kinda dislike when the lose happens and there's a bunch of 3rd years leaving cause that means we get new players and typically they aren't as interesting.
I don't even want to read a full arc on Bokuto's team. I kinda hope it's just quick.
Kokoro no Basketball and Eyeshield 21 I think are the only sports series I've read where the team won it all during that core year.
-

Man, Bokuto not winning the tournament would upset me more than Karasuno losing.
However, Hoshiumi winning, would setup him up as the defending Champion next year, so that makes sense.
But fuck Sense, HEY HEY HEY, Bokuto for the winning any day.

Well, it appears we are either getting 2 or 20 more volumes of Haikyu.
The former is sure to disappoint a number of people, but, as I've said before, I'm not confident on the latter option. I guess we'll see how it goes.
-
What the actual fuck Furudate. Why? How? What's the reason for Blue balling us like that?
A several years timeskip absolutely sucks.
I understand that grown up Volley ball is better than high school Volleyball, and Brazil is the strongest country in Volleyball. But fuck man, that was completely anti-climactic.
I'll still read the damn thing BUT this felt like the worst type of ending.Well, it appears we are either getting 2 or 20 more volumes of Haikyu.

Looks like you got your wish because the series as we know it is effectively over. I'm guessing now its going to be brand new characters.

Spoilers geeze. Post the link at the very least.
Gotta say I'm fully shocked.
-
Furudate hasn't managed to disappoint me yet so I'm open to whatever comes next.
I will admit though that it caught me off guard. Instead of opting for the classic route (new first years come in, 2nd years keep evolving etc) we get a straight-up timeskip.

Apologies for that, for some reason I thought Ike79 was alraedy talking about the latest chapter.
I'm fully shocked too.
Feels like all the time spent on building up the current first years and showing their reactions to Karasuno's matches were a waste of time.
And now it feels like we'll have to invest in new Brazilian characters, which is just..meh to me. Maybe we finally get to see Kagayema versus Hinata in the World Cup.(its a shame that Hinata will be playing for the strongest team in the world though).
Oh well, I know this was not an easy decision for both author and his editors. So I am willing to see where it goes but my interest in the series has still taken a serious nosedive.
I still think there are better ways to make such transitions and the author chose the worst one.
-

This last chapter certainly has renewed my interest in the series, but I understand why someone who's more invested in possible second and third year tournaments might be disappointed. Developments in this last couple of chapters have been fast, specially when compared to the really slow volleyball match that preceded it. This all feels fairly abrupt, and the lack of closure on other characters (we don't even know who won the Nationals) doesn't help.
That said, I can't imagine this Brazil arc being too long. It's not a good idea to change the main cast so drastically at this point of the series. The question is, when we get back to Japan, what sort of competition are we going to get? Professional volleyball? University tournament? International competition? Third year of high school?
-
Judging by the author's comment on the table of contents it's looking more to be like a short epilogue arc than the beginning of a new part.
I'd rather have that timeskip than a 2nd year of high school but skipping the end of the national tournament still bothers me.
I wanted to see Bokuto winning it, which actually seemed possible after the loss of the favorite team.

Would you mind elaborating on that?

Holy shit, that has to be one of the most brutal endings ever for a major shounen series.
Just straight out telling you: You failed, you failed utterly and to be honest you never really had a chance, The End!
I cant even be mad at the author for having the audacity to pull something like that off out of the blue, when his series had to my understanding no decline in sales, reader interest or plot quality.

It has been done before by
! Slam Dunk in the same magazine and with a lot of success, so it's not as out of left field as you might think.
That said, this is not the ending. We don't even know what the final arc is going to be about yet, so the true ending might be more hopeful or uplifting.
-
I can't lie, this seriously bums me out. It's gonna be interesting seeing how they've progressed and just what the plot is going to be for this final arc, but I'd had thought we wouldn't have seen this for years.

I suppose the Brazil arc was just a prelude then? And the main dish is about to be served? :^)
-
First thing I want to know is if Bokuto ended up winning the tournament. I hope we get the answer when Hinata reunites with his master :)
-
Caught up some and them loosing killed all my interest in the series. I don't care what happens from here on. Fun while it lasted. But the series is over for me.
-
Reading the latest chapter, I can confirm that Furudate is delivering on the hype he's been creating those last few weeks.
That match is going to be massive!
-
The hype is unreal. When i read the final pages i was running around my house for a good 5 minutes. I'm interested to see the match ofc but more importantly i want to see what Furudate does after the match
-
When you're reading a clash between some of Japan's best volleyball players, with a few world beaters mixed in, the enjoyment inevitably goes through the roof.
The chapter itself wasn't even fast-paced but it felt like it was over in a blink of an eye nonetheless; incredibly entertaining read!
-
It's so satisfying to see Hinata shine on the biggest stage. And it feels like there's even more to come. :^)
What's especially impressive about this to me is that as readers we've been able to witness his rise to the top. It's like watching an old friend finally get to fulfill their biggest dream and you know how much they've put into achieving that goal. I suppose that's impressive writing, isn't it?
-
Bokuto truly is the epitome of an ace. So reliable~
On a side note, we now know who won the Spring tournament back then.
-
I watched the full anime.
It was mostly a good time. I really like like the Kageyama development in the first couple episodes and overall I think the first season is the strongest having the best balance of character moments and matches( that don't go over the top). Also it has one of my favorite side character the blocker from Date(Aone) who I call Ivan Drago. My favorite episode is just the last one having them deal with loss and how it haunts you and them moving from it.
Second season seems a lot more anime with a lot more crazy moves and visuals. I quite enjoyed the jump in the first episode, that fight being Kageyama and Hinata was great drama and I like that it took some time to properly mend fences. It is among the most impactful moments of the show. I did not enjoy the matches as matches as much in this one but I character wise they did great work. Yachi is great and made that other manager something other than the beautiful lady Tanaka and Noya fan over. As a mentor I started getting interested in her.
I didn't give a damn about Yamaguchi but this season quickly transform into someone I'm deeply invest in and him landing so many of those serves that has been build up was satysfying as hell.I like that after such a long string of losses for their training they were the dominant forces for pretty much all their matches. They only really hit a snag with Aoba but even then they won their first set and pretty much put them on the defensive for quite a long time. It really was Oikawa hanging them together. Going into it I expected to be incredebly bored by the match and it mostly started that way but between including that loner thugh and Oikawa issues the matched really gained life and became my favorite and Oikawa became the character I respect the most. I really like that aspect of him seeing someone with greater talent but instead of the more classic you have to accept it he goes a latteral move of not being in denial about but instead embracing it as motivation to be even better. That last moment where he does his pass to his friend, slip on the carpet and run into the court like a madman I was 100% behind him. I think the problem with the match is that there's no way the crows were losing twice in a row to the same team so there was no tension but shifting it to Oikawa that has no hope of winning and will never realize his goal brings back that tension.
Also Oikawa quote "Talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish." is the best of the show.
Third season I didn't care much for the match. Again foretold results and with 5 sets you ban pretty guess the result pass the second one. Also White eagle is strong in the most meh way possible. But it made me a Tsuuki fan seeing him work so hard to block the unblockable. His brother really did a lot to make him more likeable.Seeing why he refuse to get himself invested. And him finally celebrating for this match was great.
S4 is still halfway. My only hope is that Nekoma actually faces them and doesn't lose before. I know they will lose to the crows but I'd be pissed if they don't meet like I'm annoyed everytime Ippo doesn't fight Miyata. Also I expect the show/manga will wnd shortly after the finals of the nationals similarly to how Kuroko did the same. Leaving the club in the future to people they know are reliable. There's like a lot of Kuroko pattern in there.
-
Best chapter of what is shaping up to be the best match ever.
Every chapters have been awesome in this game so far.
-
I have to say, this arc is my favourite part of Haikyu. The lack of stakes allows me to simply focus on the present and enjoy the brilliantly crafted manga chapters that we get every week. No need to care about who wins of what comes next, this match is just an extended epilogue that is providing payoff to all of the characters introduced during the series. Great stuff.
I wouldn't mind at all if it continued for a bit longer, but it seems to have less than a volume left. It might end before the summer does. -
I've actually been super bored with this arc. Most of the characters playing I don't really care about. I had never been a fan of the majority of the characters from other schools. So non Crows focus drives down my enjoyment.
-
^it's the opposite for me. One might wonder why Furudate is focusing on the non-crows but every time he does, he manages to make me care for them. And I feel like it adds further emotional weight to the match by fleshing out almost every player's background– makes the payoff all the more satisfying, you know?
That being said, Hinata is stealing the show anyway and I bloody love it. It feels so incredibly awesome to see where he's arrived after all those hardships he went through and even though the story's about to end, I'm enjoying it more than ever :^)
-
What a way to end this amazing manga!
It's probably the best ending of a manga I've ever read.
When the timeskip first happened, I wasn't sure I would like that decision.
But all the development that came afterward were fantastic: one of the best match of the manga (if not the best), some of the best art and paneling almost every chapter and the most satisfying way to complete the development of every major characters.
That post inter-high arc turned an amazing manga into a masterpiece IMO. I can't wait to see this animated in the future. It might not be until a few years from now but I really hope it happens.
