New Official Viz Manga Discussion

Odd that One Piece isn't mentioned in the poll, especially since its one of the titles that is in the little scroll-bar on the top of the websites (those are all their bigger named titles)

I think One Piece is getting more popular, but its not exploding the way Naruto is or Bleach is. Then again if you look at the usual fan base for One Piece even before licensing, it was never exploding with popularity all over anyway.

Maybe if Viz gets enough "Other" spaces written with One Piece in it, they'll see demand for it and start releasing volumes more frequently. Maybe they intentionally didn't include One Piece, just to see how many people mention it over other titles offered in the poll.

That was a pretty sweet poll. I put One Piece in others and said I would be will to pay a $5 increase on it hahaha!

Viz definately doesn't own Sin City….....this poll seems really off now that I look at all the titles they had to choose from.

Maybe Viz is looking at some Sin City-like titles, hence they wanna know if people buy the books. Maybe that's the goal of mentioning titles they don't own, to see if people have an interest in similiar titles.

Not necessarily, no. Naruto is the biggest thing since DBZ right now, manga is making top sales, hence quick releases. OP while I'm guessing from luffy's more frequent appearance on SJ has at least surpassed YGH in manga popularity, but still lacks a great anime dub to back it up and shoot it to stardom.

Ok. I got my new copy of SJ, and it appears they kept Miss Valentine's laugh, pointing towards them keeping the giant's laughs, and not pulling an Arlong.

I really like those cool covers Viz produces for the series, though I doubt they are the reason for the strange release pattern.

The covers are soooo attractive, I really want to buy each volume, but I have the colored, large, chapters in my Monthly JUMP USA, all of which I have except for Issues 5 and 6 (which means I'm missing FIVE whole chapters of early OP).

Now that you mention it Viz volumes are alot easier to read than the Japanese tankoban.

Sure is! For some kind of reason, I want to read on to Arabasta, and later arcs, but I still stick with Viz. I think it's because, their translations are getting better, and it's getting more of a traditional feel than the online scans would have.

But the thing is they won't cuss anymore. When Nami says "Yes, I know, I'm going to blazes" instead of h*** it doesn't really sound like something she would say.

Other wise I'm fine with the Manga. Now if only they would pump is out at say, four chapters a month.

EDIT: And in the monthly YGO chapters, we can usually get away with one h**!!

yeah, I also noticed that last night, when I read it. It made me think of an old person, that'd say, "What the blazes?!" Or something like that. I thought, well I guess they sorta mean the same thing…but It's just not the same. That's not Nami-esque. She's not an old lady...:P

I do agree that the lack of cussing is a small loss but I've grown to live with it.

Besides, what about "Hades"? Isn't "I'm going to hades" pretty much the same as "I'm going to hell"? Remember that One Piece is primarily viewed as kid's entertainment, despite mature anime and manga fans also enjoying it. As a result, Viz have to please the soccer moms over the fans.

Volume 4 looks like ass.

I really prefer the Japanese covers, sorry. They just feel better, not to mention I find the same-color, overly-flashy title on every single Viz volume to be a bit distracting.

It's nice to see that they're doing better with their translations now, though. They seem to lack the capacity to rewrite lines, unfortunately, leading to odd pseudo-swears like "blazes" and "heck" when those could easily be written around without touching the actual dialogue.

I like 4 in viz's covers….Though I really like vol 8 in japanese a whole lot more then viz's

Basic design problems galore.
Theres abundant use of clashing colors. (dominant purple, light blue, gold, neon green, red ,yellow) its an offense to the eyes.
The cover image is also insanely high in red amounts.
And the lame title choice which is in no way better then "Crescent Moon".

4 is the only one I have a major issue with. But even the decent ones are just not as good as the originals. Oda or whoever does the tankos has a GREAT eye for color design. And having gold for every title on the cover is just a dumb idea on Viz's part. They've improved the YYH covers, so they do have design skills….so what gives?

The exception being Volume 3, which I thought was better with Viz's changes.

I think Viz stretch the image slightly for the covers, but that's about it from what I understand. Personally I'd need to have a Japanese tanko in one hand and a Viz graphic novel in another to compare.

Maybe it's just me. But I don't like how flashy (Viz) the covers are. They're too bright and compared to the tankos, they hurt my eyes.

I see. Thank you for indulging me. You all make a plausible pont and have convinced me. I think Viz's slump was in the Kuro Arc era, and have slowly improved over the years.

I still think that Viz did the best on the Buggy arc. Lines like

Buggy: Who am I?!
Crew: PIRATE CAPTAIN BUGGY THE CLOWN!
Buggy: DAMN STRAIGHT!!

I know cussing isnt that mature, but it seems to fit the characters a LOT more, than saying "Curses.", "Zolo" or "Darn you!"

Curious: What's with the asterisk in the box where Nami tells Zoro he owes her 300,000 berries becuase of the interest. They state that this only makes sence in Nami's mind. Yet, every way I think about it, it makes sence (since we're not adding to a previous debt since Zoro said he gave her the money back) What's the deal VIZ!? I hope that's not in the GN

No, it's right. Because 200% interest would be an additional 200,000 berries added onto the already 100,000 making it 300,000. So the sidenote is correct.

After picking up this months issue, I have noticed something else after I read "Nefeltari Vivi" in the manga, in the "Luffypalooza" article on page 350 (Yes, the same article that says Luffy's Brother Portgaz D. Trace ate the Gum Gum fruit) it lists Vivi as "Nefertari Vivi".

Well, the mistake with the "Trace eats the Gum Gum fruit" was a pretty bad one, but for the video game. I hope they continue using "Nefertari" instead of "Nefeltari", I mean, when 4kids did that episode, they initially did use "Nefertari" then they changed it to say "Nefeltari".

4Kids makes random changes all the time, and their continuity sucks so small changes like that are to be expected.

Viz is much better about fixing the occaisonal mistakes they make. The volume should hopefully have Nefertari and not Nefeltari.

I'm a bit confused here. Why is it people assume Viz is going to use Nefertari just because an article that seems to have nothing to do with the manga uses it? Personally I don't see how that works. Sure, Nefeltari could be a typo like Gara (or whatever it's called) was, but I don't see how this article will affect the future of her name.

Besides, I can live with Nefeltari. I can't say I remembered them using Nefertari much in the episodes, so I wouldn't recall the name or notice a change if someone hadn't pointed it out to me.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines actually Caracal. It is a tad annoying, but it's really the same thing with Zolo. It's annoying, yes, but it doesn't take away from the story.

Plus, Oda himself said he just picked Nefertari out of a book with Egyptian history without knowing it's meaning.
