@black-leg:
Donkey kong jr. Would not just be another donkey kong. He would be a character that represents the entire original donkey kong franchise, taking elements from donkey kong, jump man, Stanley and himself. He even has a math attack in that article from Dk jr. Math!
Yea, no, even with a unique moveset, he'd be another Donkey Kong. And given that there's other characters in that series with unique appearances and personalities, I'd find it kinda lame if they went that direction. Especially since we already have the 75mm stage representing that era of Donkey Kong. In fact, the Donkey Kong arcade as a whole is not something lacking in representation, we have the springs and hammers as items as well and overall Nintendo constantly reminds us of its existence.
To me it's like how "hey, I'm not happy with just Mario, let's also have Metal Mario and Cat Mario and Tanooki Mario" or "I know we have Link and Toon Link, but bring back Young Link and have Wolf Link, because you can never have enough Link." We're talking about series that already get a disproportionate amount of attention from Nintendo, and now you have people also asking for more of the same characters to keep on happening. It stops being about unique movesets, but about people FOR SOME REASON preferring a different version of the same character instead of a completely unique character that represents something else entirely. It reminds me of the stupidity of Pokken having TWO pikachus because when deciding to have a unique moveset they'd rather go with a cosplay Pikachu than with an established, unique and popular pokemon. But that's another rant.
They have a chance to bring more uniqueness to the representation that Nintendo has in their fighter, I'd rather they took it as such instead of going cheap and having other versions of certain characters. In the case of Donkey Kong we have a weird situation in which the DKC Returns series brought back the franchise into super-seller status, and nothing from those games is really acknowledged except that one stage that no one likes to play. That's the DKC that current players can relate to the most and it makes sense for it to be acknowledged with a third character. Making the third Donkey Kong character be devoted to a character gimmick that was ultimately never as successful or well-received as the country series, and which can only boast exactly ONE game and it's math counterpart and some side-character appearances in sports, JUST for a retro appeal to a game that doesn't exactly have a lot of relevance in comparison to others, would just look stupid to me when someone like Dixie Kong has been a protagonist in three of the main DKC games, two of the donkey kong land games on the GBA, and by having been in Tropical Freeze is a character that people would recognize. Not to even mention the fact that in the original DKC trilogy she and Diddy were playable more times than the actual Donkey Kong himself.
I guess in the end though we can also consider the fact that DK Jr. isn't exactly high on the polls. At least I would hope so. It annoys me enough already that people are asking for MORE Mario, Zelda and Pokemon characters (people fucking want Pichu? Holy shit), for Samurai to make the long-desired third DK rep be DK Jr. while K. Rool is a mii costume would be too much.
Sorry for the long diatribe, I take this stuff super seriously lol
