BTW the cool people picked cats (at least Noqanky and I did).

-
Pfff.
Also, Nintendo just (crudely) took down the page I linked. There's a booth in the plaza to pick a side, for those wondering.

Yes, cats are indeed the better choice.
Also I'm so close to A+ I can taste it. Loving the new map, my main is the Tentatek Splattershot and it's perfect for splat zones there.
-
Can we have a third side to be able to prove the superiority of ferrets?
I'm more of a bearded dragon guy.
-
MADE IT
I have learned that looping around the back at the start of splat zones is not a terrible idea. Let the opponent capture the zone first while you infliltrate. Then stab in the backs and they get the time penalty. Also cold blooded and haunt are totally more useful than stealth swim. Mostly.
-
If you're on the fence, this quick survey can tell you what kind of pet suits you.
I chose cat because cats are basically domesticated goats.

New map is something else. It's height based and it's easy to forget there's water under the grates, leading to many of my squid deaths. Definitely could play some mind games here.
Also good game Ouro, we were doing well against a pack of level 20s. Callie and Marie messed up our connection lol.

So someone datamined the Splatoon disk. There are 33 yet to be released weapons! (well many are just different loadouts)
http://pastebin.com/sgFewxFK
http://pastebin.com/wiFQuQy9Also info on the Rainmaker mode: http://pastebin.com/HNkuudWz
-
A lot of those look like stuff I wouldn't use. Except maybe the o-matics and brushes, and the few total unknowns. Still awesome news.
-
Well the roller with a seeker and bomb rush just sounds OP as hell. Hopefully it's range is low.
-
I think a lot of rollers need rebalancing. I still can't believe the Dynamo Roller basically outranges and outdamages every weapon. But we'll see.
Also Rainmaker looks super fun.
-
Octobrush tickles my interest as well as the long-range blaster, but for the most part I'm not a fan of those side weapon combinations.
-
I'm loving all of the content Splatoon is gonna get, hot damn
Although I'm kinda vanilla….I've using the Splattershot Jr. recently. Fast rate of fire, which means faster/more points. And that means more experience for moi.
-
I'm really interested in Rainmaker now, and more mode freedom in general. I've been playing way too much Splatoon lately so I could use some fresh content to keep my enthusiasm going. Or you know, Splatfest.
Over the weekend I improved my ranking to B+. Thoughts in spoilers so that I don't bore everyone:
[hide]I'm not particularly looking forward to the struggle to rise through the A ranks due to the fickle nature of random matchmaking. It's getting to the point where all else being equal (which it usually isn't but still), things as simple as team composition can determine a match. Like I had a really cool session of multiple games with the same pool of people where I won almost all my games, and I felt like I was a critical part of making any team a success (I don't want to say I carried my team but I made a difference). One of the few I lost was a match where my team ended up with three .96 Gal users (one of them being me). It's a great weapon but man, that is not an ideal team composition for Splat Zones.
It felt good to be able to stick with a pool of players though. Usually I quit and rejoin really often to reroll the pool, especially if I have drawn out frustrating matches (they just annoy me and impatience makes me a worse player) or if I get crushed (because I don't want to leave such situations to RNG). Or if I experience too much lag, or even if too many players in the pool are using weapons I dislike going up against (ugh @ the entire Squelcher family and Splattershot Pro). Or if I feel like people have figured out my general strategy and are adapting to it. Basically I have to play the odds to try to tip the RNG in my favor as much as possible. But this one group just worked for me.[/hide]
Anyway one thing I'm starting to think is that the different weapons have some kind of hidden weight attribute that affects your mobility in human form, at the very least while you're shooting. Run speed modifiers aside, certain weapons seem to be able to maneuver about pretty nimbly during firefights compared to others. I used a primary run speed up buff yesterday to test, and with my .96 Gal I can still barely move while firing. I can advance or strafe to a small degree, but it's a very small difference from standing still in terms of being a sitting duck. It requires reliance on squidding around between shots or, if you use the gyroscope (which I can't), at least you can try hopping around while you shoot. In contrast, things like the Splattershot family can actually be quite a pain by strafing and circling while shooting, and the agility afforded is enough to make it a tangible advantage in the heat of battle. I haven't tried testing a large variety of weapons to see if there is a direct correlation between weapon size and mobility, but it's definitely a factor that deserves consideration when picking a weapon and evaluating a matchup.Final thing I wanted to mention. This isn't anything I noticed recently, and hopefully isn't news to anyone, but I figure it merits a mention. When you activate your special, it automatically refills your tank. Use this to your advantage! I see a lot of people just automatically activate their special when they could have chucked out some bombs or whatnot first, and in the worst cases I've seen people get killed because they ran out of ink when their special was charged. In my case, every time I activate Echolocator I get to throw a free Sprinkler as a bonus.

I think people in A rank are generally good enough that you don't have to worry about awful teammates. You can't expect to win every match and get great teammates every time, but you gotta remember the common denominator in every game is you. I've found that if I'm doing well, I usually win (not that there aren't frustrating exceptions).
Just having one teammate in or near the zone that can hold their own can be really important because your teammates can easily jump to you and support.
-
I just tried to squid jump to the other side of my town in Animal Crossing. I think I need help.
Oh well, I've finally reached A rank!
-
Nice. I've restricted myself to only do Ranked on weekends (and only if matches run smoothly). Which is already what I was mostly doing before, because I get hooked and hours disappear. Hopefully this weekend I can move up again, unless Splatfest happens in which case I might not really play Ranked.
-
Is Splatfest limited to Turf War?
I really hope it doesn't happen this Saturday…I took a coworker's 12 hour shift PLUS it's my grand uncle's 80th birthday in the nightAlso I reached 99 in A+ Ranked and lost all will to play now because I don't want to lose that score. Maybe I'll create a smurf account to play on but I'd probably feel bad then too. They should really have a super tough S rank or something. If you lose you go down 30 points, if you win you go up 5.
-
Who knows if it's limited to a particular mode. Anyway what they really need to do is add Splat Zones as an unranked mode. It's beyond me why they haven't already (and even add a Turf Wars ranked mode for that matter).
-
I think they're just trying to create as few online queues as possible, maybe because of fears of a low online population. That's why everyone in the world is lumped into playing games together instead of regional servers. Possibly why they're saving the new modes for later too, maybe tower control will simply replace splat zones.
But the game sold a million copies so I don't think that's a big concern now. I'd like a Turf Wars ranked for sure, and a Splat Zone unranked so I can keep playing without ladder anxiety
-
Having region-based play would also certainly reduce the amount of bullshit lag. When I log on late in the evening I'm usually exclusively playing Japanese players and the smoothness of the rounds is highly unpredictable which is frustrating.
-
I can't believe they actually have the balls (stupidity?) to put it on that day. Fortunate for me, however, because I don't usually do jack shit on July 4. I'll even be well-rested because I get Friday off work since the 4th falls on Saturday.
-
I should be home by then, and I also don't really celebrate the Fourth of July, so that date is fine by me.
-
By the way, the post says it will be Turf War. And instead of of running Saturday 6:00 am Pacific - Sunday 6:00 am Pacific, it's midnight to midnight.
-
Wooo I'm not working the Saturday
Also there's a patch incoming on the 1st. Patchnote translation taken from reddit:
Splatfest Alterations (Bullets are the main points, 'quotes' are the sub-points):
- When an enemy team isn't found and the time is exhausted, the game will attempt to make a game with a team from the same Splatfest team. (They used plain "team" a lot here, so I'm not 100% sure on this)
You can acquire Splatfest points from battles against the same team.
At the end of the Splatfest, only points from games against the opposing team will count towards the end result.- Made adjustments so that when you start the game before the Splatfest starting time, you may begin to participate at a maximum five minutes before the official start time (Once the official start time passes, you will quickly be able to join with the full event).
This aims to clear the server congestion at the Splatfest start time.
(I'm guessing this refers to starting just before Splatfest begins so you don't get bubbled away from the main group or something, I'm not sure myself)
- Increased the number of Super Sea Snails gained by those on the losing team who received the "Champion" and "King/Queen" ranks.
(Japanese has it as "Charismatic" and "Eternal", I'm guessing these are the two highest ranks)
Special Attacks:
- Inkstrike: Fixed the bug where the painted area differed largely based on the location of the impact. (Altered translation credit to /u/Arbaal )
- Kraken: When in kraken form and you receive an enemy's attack, a stronger repulsion will occur than what is currently present.
(think like the Bubbler's pushback)
Gear Abilities:
- Ninja Squid: Swim speed in ink has been reduced further than what is currently present.
- Stealth Jump: Charging time for the super jump has been lengthened.
- Ink Resistance: Decreased the [ability's] effect on damage taken and movement speed reduction when walking
Definitely don't like that ink resistance is being nerfed. That ability is just crucial.
Stealth swim too kinda but we'll see how slow it gets -
Kraken nerf is cool, what the fuck were they thinking with the gear abilities? It's not a buff anymore if it makes you slower, and I don't think ink resistance was OP. This makes me think I'm just going to stick with things like quick respawn, special duration up, offense/defense up, and speed buffs. Oh and currently I'm really digging recon.
-
Meanwhile, I still mainly keep clothes because they look cool on me and the abilities aren't too stupid.
Awww yea, stayin' fresh
-
Kraken definitely needed a nerf, yeah. It's fine in Turf War but way too good in Splatzones where everyone in concentrated in one area.
The bubbler needs one too. It last too damn long! And transfers to your teammates.I actually think Ink Resistance is the best ability in the game by a lot and I see most people in the A rank using it. Even so I don't think it should be nerfed. Rather they should make the default ink resistance better to make it less attractive. Either that or just give the ability's stats to everyone. Because it makes the game more fun. More freedom of movement and slightly longer time to kill makes more better combat, one that isn't so reliant on surprise kills.
Ninja Swim and Stealth Jump simply didn't need to be nerfed I think.
Oh and they should really fix the damn Dynamo Roller. One hit kill, large spread and more range than any non-charger. Come on!
-
Thankfully my July 4th morning is free too. Team Cat, baby.
http://mynintendonews.com/2015/06/26/new-roller-coming-to-splatoon-tonight/
Another weapon!
-
I want to choose team cat too but I feel like it will be the most popular choice and I'll have to wait long for matches
hmmmm
-
Well they did announce in your very post that if no match is found against opposite teams, it'll form a match with the same team. And you still get points for it.
And Meta, I think we're also getting the Custom Dual Squelcher? I think NoE said that.
-
I really like the Carbon Roller. Even if I keep dying I feel like I could play some nice mindgames with it
-
Since I'll probably never try rollers again (other than brushes). What exactly is special about the Carbon Roller? Is it faster than usual?
-
I assume the matches will at least be region-locked for this…
-
of course japan has already had two splatfests, because fuck the rest of the world.
-
Eh, at least Splatfest will be fun. I'm burnt out on Ranked and the lag and other bullshit out of my control. I got to A- over the weekend, but dropped back to B+ and my progress really is hindered by pretty consistent lag that is just super frustrating and makes it not be fun anymore. In the best cases I can make myself useful but take way more hits to kill than it's supposed to. In the worst cases, I either get teleporting, or a team member disconnects, or (rarely) I get booted out of a match. The average is somewhere in between. I just am sick of it. I can manage despite it in the B range, but the A range makes it pretty bad. And more and more, all the players I see are Japanese. No matter what time of day I get on, from early afternoon to night. The European players I know don't really complain about lag and I wonder if that's part of the difference. Maybe even being on the west coast affects the routing and such.
I'm also sick of the way ranking is directly correlated to kills, which has a bias against certain weapons. Placing below someone when I get 5/0 but they get 6/11. Like, staying alive and holding the zones counts for something, you know. And I'm sick of losing 12 points because I was A- but some of my opponents were B+ and my team lost, even if I was the top of my team. Or only getting 8 points for a win because an A+ happened to be placed on my team. Just overall the matching and point awarding is poorly handled.
Well I'm done complaining. It's a shame, I really like Splat Zones, but I want to play it with friends and just enjoy it, instead of being judged for all the crap that happens in a poorly implemented system. If they had a team ranked mode where I could build my team, I'd consider it. Mostly I just want to do it for fun. Or just having it by region, where I have a chance of smooth gameplay. But I have a feeling there are few people in my region playing high level ranked anyway. Maybe they figured out it was bullshit faster than me.
-
Personally, I figured out ranked was bullshit after playing enough games to get out of the initial C-. It's bad enough that the timer is arbitrary, but then the point system is also arbitrary; and if you suffer from lag, you're at a disadvantage, and if you get disconnected, you lose points. Fuck that shit. Playing a game with all of those factors stacked against you is not fun, and I refuse to participate.
Also, I don't know how you kept your cool on stream, Fool. I would've been cursing up a storm if I was facing that kind of bullshit, especially since my connection always gives me some lag (as you well know)…
-
I tried ranked once. Once was more than enough. Like Mugen said, it's entirely luck based, though I think the biggest factor is if you get good teammates. I got handed a bunch of idiots who didn't know what they were doing. And my ranking is dependent almost entirely on these incompetents and other arbitrary bullshit, but not my own skill? Yeah, I'm out.
-
I wouldn't go so far as to say there's no skill involved. Especially if you can pull out of the C range into B, a base competency develops. Otherwise I never would have made it to A-. But there's still too much lag-based RNG (on top of the regular random factors), unless the Splatoon gods favor your connection.
-
It's cool Splatfest gives you a cat or dog shirt, but if you have to return it later (why?), is there a point in maxxing it out and getting its abilities for the long term?
-
Well, you'll have to use it during Splatfest, so there is a point to leveling it up. Sucks that they took it away once the date changed, since I already had mine fully leveled, and it had some decent abilities on it (Ink Saver Main being the most useful to me). I'm so happy that I'll have to level it up all over again!
-

Makes sense I guess, but it'd be cool to keep it as a prize after, y'know? But I should work on leveling it up, then. Only got the speed up ability, and there's like 3 more left.
Also:
My
dumbmost popular miiverse post, apparently. -
Nothing's more rage-inducing then getting a bad team. Added to the fact of multiple losses in a row, especially in ranked.
And I'm getting around to doing the Amiibo challenges, and I got a totally rad costume:
[hide]I have no problem looking like a terminator and beating up on kids while doing so.[/hide]The helmet's alright but a little wide for my taste. I swap it out for the gasmask every now and then.
-
This outfit is cool and all, I have it too, but the tentacles of my female inkling still dangle out at the side. It looks as odd as it sounds…
