@stephen:
That says a lot about this generation's JRPGs that Eternal Sonata was the reigning champion
Indeed! Well the future looks a little better/more interesting with a confirmed Ni no Kuni localisation and there's also the chance that XIII Versus(if it ever comes out) might redeem the FF series in my eyes (yeah I was sadly quite underwhelmed by XIII, but power to those that enjoyed it) and I think I read somewhere that Graces F might come over too. Also my biggest hope
Persona 5 is at least in the making, so that's a little bit of solace.
@Cyber-Robin:
mmmmm I need to play Eternal Sonata then. For me only this and Nier have been great JRPGs this gen on the home consoles.
Just don't expect too much, I though it was quite ok and interesting. It's best quality lies in the atmosphere it creates being very cheerful through it's vibrant colours, but at the same time being somewhat melancholic through it's music and some themes of the story.
Looking at this generation of PS3 RPGs rank them I would rank them in this order:
1.Eternal Sonata
2.Resonance of Fate (Oh man the story delivery was such a mess but boy did I enjoy its combat system)
3.Star Ocean (Only slightly ahead above XIII, now I don't know why I think it's worse than RoF but I didn't enjoy it that much
although I think its generic story trumps RoFs)
4.FF XIII (I played it pretty much in braindead mode, cause I needed a game for when I felt too lazy to play.
Its super high production value did redeem it by quite a bit for me. But oh well it wasn't a very memorable
experience)
5.Nier (Super interesting that you get more value out of it by playing it a few times more)
6.White Knight Chronicles (Oh good I didn't like this one at all… way to slow and somewhat generic, didn't finish it)
Now Valkyrie Chronicles would be number 1 for me but I don't regard it as in the same category as the others due its more SRPG roots.
That said Xenoblades is miles ahead of them all. It was very JRPG like and didn't really try to emulate WRPGs but it still felt like a fresh take on this Genre that has been growing old and somewhat stale.
