I have seen enough Bleach, but yeah, I understand what you're saying.
Lame excuses not to like OP anime.

Naruto doesn't do CRAP. He won three fights in the Chuunin exam, and that's about all he's really won (unless you count Mizuki).
Tsunade Arc? Okay, so he got a good hit on Kabuto. Didn't really defeat him though.
Sasuke Rescue Mission? Two fights. Ran from one, lost the second.
Current Arc? Went Kyuubi on Oro, which didn't do much more than blow up a bunch of trees, then had his "fight" with Sasuke interuppted.
Having Luffy beat the main villain every arc is more impressive than him sitting around whining/crying/getting knocked out every arc.
That sounds really stupid. I mean, at least when Luffy gets his ass kicked he goes running back for more until he DOES win.
Heh yeah like Ichigo and Naruto DON'T beat the major bad guy while everyone fights the "pansies." XD
Did you ever say that to him?
Heck if he's going by that then every shounen is freakin' repetitive.
Yeah that's what I was trying to figure out myself- I can't say to much for Naruto, but Ichigo definitely takes on the cast majority of, well, EVERYBODY in that show - fights between the other characters end in losses or don't get finished.

[RANT] they dont try it cuz of the art style??? i got interested in the show because of that! >:X you know how hard it is to find a series so different from the others??!? i almost throw up whenever i see those other billions of shows with the same artstyle and shiney eyes and pointy chins DX no more…
i'm happy i finally found an anime which i can show my teachers at university so they can shut up about anime being all the same and let some of us draw it XD [/RANT]
anyways:
"i seen some of it, its sucks and has stupid voices"
"what?!? you're watching the DUB???!?"
"watch the sub, PLEASE, dont watch the dub ;_;"
"i don't understand japanese. so i cant watch it!"
"SUBTITLES!!!"
"I dont wanna read it! i'll miss everything!!"
"then read the manga!!!"
"manga?! anime is always better :P i get to see movement and sound! anyways in manga they sometimes change the stories and i like to watch the original thing"
"…..O_o;; ...ummm.... most anime is based OFF manga....."
" O.O;; .....it is?"then the conversation drifted…..
this kid i know is SO lazy >_< likes to just watch any shiney thing that plays on TV i wanted to show him something with an actual STORY but i guess most couch potatoes dont like that sort of stuff.... which sorta explains all those reality tv shows poping up everyday...anyways, i converted my 11-year old sister! she's now near the begining of W7. i had to force her to watch it till the arlong arc then she loved it so much that she likes it even more that all her other fav anime shows (bleach, naruto and card captor sakura) and now she's making all her class watch it too! a victory for OP, yay! :D
everyone! go convert the narutards and bleachaholics in their (filler) hour of weakness!! is pissed at all the random b1tching about the naruto dub and the fact that bleach gets ADULTSWIM when OP got FOXBOX >:X
(j/k j/k...)sorry for the long post ^^;;
needed someplace to vent out my angerdamn i talk a lot -

like wtf. I dont remember what site I got it from but I remember that line from the site
lol, thats funny.

Personally, I am EXTREMELY anti-tobacco - second hand smoke gave me asthma and almost all the relatives I have lost since I was born died from smoking-related causes.
And yet Sanji is my all-time favorite One Piece character.
I don't hate characters because they smoke - I don't hate people who smoke, either, but I do get rather pissed if they decide their cigarette is more important than my breathing (as cigarette smoke is easily the worst of my triggers for an asthma attack). But I still find it a silly reason to not watch One Piece.

QFT, definitely. That's what got me hooked in One Piece at first (and some other favorites of mine, like Ippo, Monster or Slam Dunk), even before i knew about the amazing storyline and character development/interaction. I can't stand the generic anime style anymore, it's just so uninspired, turn me off from any series.

Hmm… Well let's see here's one I have heard from someone:
STFU One Piece is for nubcakes... You never see the main character go all wild like Kyuubi do you?I mean... WTF?! Luffy is so badass that he DOESNT NEED TO GO AND GET SOME CHEAP UPGRADE... Ah whatever... It's their fault for missing out on the party !
I must admit though... When I first saw One Piece, I was like: Agh, this art bothers me a lot... But I LOVE PIRATES... Must continue onwards!
And heck, as with a lot of other people, the art has grown on me, no longer seems weird... and I really just love all of the concepts that go into One Piece. Friends, Family, Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama! -
STFU One Piece is for nubcakes… You never see the main character go all wild like Kyuubi do you?
WOW. That's all that can be said. XD;
I'm getting more and more people lately to join in, which rocks. Still some I have to keep pushing to make them watch (once they reach Arlong, they should hopefully be hooked).
-
"I don't like One Piece because, I heard that there's use of tobacco in it. I'm so against drugs. Therefore, I'm also against the show."
hahaha lol stupidity :P OP doesnt promote smoking, it just some habits of certain charachters, like how they sometimes dig their nose XD but cooler
so this person wont watch anything that has tobacco in it??? hahahahahahaha…..
(btw smoking sucks! my dad used to smoke heavily and i never minded, but when i was 11 or 12 i sudddenly couldnt breathe for some time O.O you dont know how horrible that felt D:now i cant even talkto some of my freinds because even the smell makes it hard to breath. its aweful... but you cant give sanji a lolipop for god's sake DX) -
Just a random little note:
I was listening to the OP Radio thing, and told my mom to come listening to something (BGM song, "The, The, The Strongest"). :
Me: Hey mom, remember how you said you can't wait to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2? Well, listen to this.
Mom listens
Me: Cool, right?
Mom: Yeah, that's cool.
Me: It's from One Piece.
Mom: WHAAA?! No way!!
And earlier I got into this odd conversation where I was telling my mom about Skypiea and just explaining how cool Oda does everything (the conversation started as something about heaven and how I thought it'd be cool if it looked like the big, grassy field on the default Windows XP desktop background XD ).
-
Hmm… Well let's see here's one I have heard from someone:
STFU One Piece is for nubcakes... You never see the main character go all wild like Kyuubi do you?Heheh, oh my. One thing is sure, this sequence of 50+ humongous Naruto fillers helped to hook a lot of that series fans into OP. At least the more smart and open-minded ones.

I remember one person in GameFaqs saying he/she doesn't like OP because it's too predictable. The good guys always win the fight and it's boring that way.
What…?
-
I remember one person in GameFaqs saying he/she doesn't like OP because it's too predictable. The good guys always win the fight and it's boring that way.
What…?
One word: Crocodile.
And how about Enel/Eneru, who nearly killed Sanji and Usopp (I mean, to bring someone THAT CLOSE to the brink of death has to count as won battle)? Mihawk? Zoro certainly wasn't celebrating after that fight. Davy Back Fight?
Secondly, as a general rule of thumb, people want the good guys to win. It's just like watching baseball - you want your favorite team to win. You don't want the other team to win. You feel GOOD when your team wins.
Now it is true that it would be insanely boring if One Piece was a string of Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and everyone else won battles with ease, but they do not, and some of the battles that are up in the air end badly for the Straw Hats even when they do win. They often come out badly injured so they fight tooth and nail for this wins. And even as badass as some of the crew is, they're still basically underdogs. Always. And people LOVE underdogs.
-
I dont know if someone has put this but:
"has a stupid name"
-

Anyone who watches an action series, or namely shonen series, and has that complaint, should be laughed at unto death.
-
Here's one my stepbrother said "looks childish".
-
But what I was getting at as far as Naruto goes is that Naruto is still the one fighting the major bad guy of that arc. Not any other character. Heck in the Sasuke retrivel arc we didn't see LEE fighting Sasuke. We didn't see ANYONE but Naruto fighting Sasuke. Same for the Gaara fight, same for the earlier fights against Haku, Kiba, and Neji as well.
Uh….correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Sasuke fight Gaara before Naruto...twice...and Lee fought him before that? And Haku wasn't even the main villain in that arc, Zabuza was, and Kakashi beat him, AND Haku if you want to get technical. And in what world were Kiba and Neji the main villains of the chuunin exam?!
I mean, there's pretty much not one sentence in that whole paragraph that isn't wrong. If anything, you're DISproving your point, since Naruto has only fought the main villain in about half the major arcs.
Personally, I happen to like the fact that Naruto gasp loses a fight from time to time. Cause you know how much we hate unpredictability.
-

Actually, that manga is near opposite. Except for a few minor fights in the Chunnin exams, Naruto never wins. :/ (Gaara was a tie)

Yea, im new to these forums, just an FYI. but theres one thing that i want to post in this thread, One Piece is one of my 3 animes im watching atm. naruto, bleach, and one piece to name them. I enjoy all of them. One piece is the best atm, the fillers in BLeach and Naruto are getting old but OP is still strong and to the people out there that dont like one piece they most likely never seen any of the good episodes or arcs. and the Dubed crap is just that crap…. It down grades the whole thing subs and all. so i think that most ppl who dont like one piece may have seen the dubed or the very crappy subed in the case of my friend both, he cant stand one piece any more. he wont even watch the Sail On AMV..... so thats my story to add.
-
I know people that don't watch or at least read the manga just because they got a bad impression by watching 4Kids's horrible cut.
-
there is no such thing as a lame excuse to not liking anything
if you don't like something for a reason then you don't like it, its only lame to the people who like it
-
there is no such thing as a lame excuse to not liking anything
if you don't like something for a reason then you don't like it, its only lame to the people who like it
Although I think that I agree some of the reasons are justifiable, such as not liking the art style, some answerers might be contradicting themselves. For example, claiming that it's "too predicatable because the heroes win every fight" but then watching a ton of other Shonen series is a tad lame because that's basically EVERY shonen anime, so it's kind of like "well, why would you say you don't like it because of this and yet this same thing happens in all of these other shows you like?"
I agree that if someone doesn't like it they don't like it, but a simple "I'm sorry, I just don't like it" is better than making up bullshit excuses like that one. I mean, if you're going to state a reason for not liking something it should at least make sense (you couldn't say you disliked Antarctica because it was too warm, for example).
-
yeah well in that one case they're probably covering for another reason they don't like it
-
yeah well in that one case they're probably covering for another reason they don't like it
So then why not say the real reason? Don't use a reason that's irrelevant to why they dislike it.
Let's say this person does tell me they find it too predictable, and yet they watch Sailor Moon (which might be one of the most predictable shows ever - the plot of 95% of the episodes is "fight Monster of the Day"). In reality, they aren't very fond of the art style and the plot doesn't interest them. Those are both reasonable reasons to not like something and if they at least gave the show a try (I don't like it when people say they don't like something without trying it - unless it's food) I would probably go "aw, too bad for you" and move on. But it doesn't make sense to make up an excuse like that if there's a different reason - I don't care why you don't like it, just tell me the truth and that's fine.
-
Exactly, Dixxy Mouri. If they've given it a chance (and a GOOD chance, not half an episode and think that's how the whole thing is), I can usually respect their opinions and not bug them (as much XP) about it anymore.
But if they just come with something like:
"has a stupid name"
no, that's not a good reason. That's just flat-out laziness and not willing to give something a chance.
I gave "Azumanga Daioh" a chance (two episodes so far), and my opinion: it's not funny. I don't like it, but I may or may not try more later on (probably not). I tried out "Yakitate! Japan" and don't like it either. That doesn't mean I think it's crap, though. I don't know alot of Japanese (yet, since the show mostly relies on puns) so it makes sense I wouldn't find it funny and wouldn't like it.
-
my brother may fall into thise category I'm not sure
he usually around (in same room) where I watch my downloaded anime, and he can stand the shows in english he is just under the impression that everyone who isn't 40 in anime has their voice way to high pitched so he can't watch it
-
Someone didn't actually give up at the NAME of the anime, did they? I mean, I can understand if someone ran away if the title was blatantly pornographic but the NAME?
I also agree on Azumanga Daioh - I think I might have survived the first few episodes myself, but I just don't see the appeal. My "but One Piece is borning because Luffy always wins" friend insists it's because I start with it expectations, but AD is a comedic anime, so I expect it to be funny, and I didn't find it funny.
The problem with just trying a little bit of shonen anime, however, is that most don't even have half of their cast for at least ten-twenty episodes. I was surprised it took Sanji, who's in the first opening, about twenty episodes to even APPEAR, never mind join the crew. So for me it feels like it takes a shonen anime at least a good ten-twenty episodes worth of viewing before a real judgement can be passed (which is why I won't take a solid stance on Naruto as I've only seen about ten episodes, although I do believe Kakashi is the awesome).

Yet Sasuke and Lee had their asses handed to them by Gaara while Naruto was the only one who could even draw with him.
So if we take it that way the three main villians of part 1 that being Haku, Gaara, and Sasuke. Naruto was the one who fought and almost practically won while anyone else would have lost right away. Thus I did prove my point.
Heck in One Piece the same thing would happen if any of the other straw hat's took on the main villian… well heck it happened during Skypiea considering everyone but Luffy lost easily. Also Zoro did lose against Arlong despite putting up somewhat of a fight.
-
Yecch, let's keep discussion about Naruto in the proper thread. I enjoy it mostly until it starts digging…
Though:
Yet Sasuke and Lee had their asses handed to them by Gaara while Naruto was the only one who could even draw with him.
Sasuke's fight was inconclusive, and Lee actually handed Garra's overconfident ass to him. Unfortunately Kishimoto has this fetish about showing the importance of hard work whilst not letting any of Lee's attacks hit home.
well heck it happened during Skypiea considering everyone but Luffy lost easily.
Because Luffy is made out of rubber.
-
Heck if he's going by that then every shounen is freakin' repetitive.
The fact is the main character ALWAYS fights the major villain. So really someone can't claim One Piece is repetitive because of that because that would be saying that all shounen is repetitive.
I agree. Heck, if some of the others were given the chance I get the feeling they might be able to beat the main villain. I feel Sanji's kicks could beat Crocodile if he's wet, Zoro could take down Kuro with no major problem etc.
But it's to be expected, and frankly I feel the OP fights are so different to each other it doesn't matter. Least Luffy doesn't spend his time training for hours on end and powering up before and during each fight like OTHER series do, mentioning no names.
I remember one person in GameFaqs saying he/she doesn't like OP because it's too predictable. The good guys always win the fight and it's boring that way.

What they said.
And out of interest, is this person interested in another action shonen series? If so then he/she can't like them either as the heroes often win in that, unless he/she wants to be a hypocrite.
I know people that don't watch or at least read the manga just because they got a bad impression by watching 4Kids's horrible cut.
Same here. I've even seen a guy on one forum go so far as to become a "One Piece hater" and proud of it.
@Dixxy:

Fine, fine I'm done with the Naruto discussion then sorry… I was just trying to prove a point though you know that One Piece isn't the only shounen series guilty of that.
and well as far as the skypiea thing goes... well Oda could have let Wiper actually beat Enel's behind or heck for all we know Nami could have found some DEM source of rubber and beaten Enel with it. Fact is that in shounen plots it's always the main character fighting the main villian. I mean that's why whenever a side character goes up against them they get their asses handed to them. Sort of like when Renji tried going up against Byakuya in Bleach.
-
Complaining about character flaws…. flaws are part of what builds character, yet people bash characters based on those flaws.
-
One Piece drags? Whatever. At least they don't show us flashbacks of what happened one or two episodes ago in practically every episode and in the middle of fights.
ahem

Well, admitedly, they DO flashback to episode 1 DURING episode one and I found that be a tad bit silly. . . but I stuck around and was happy to see that the flashing back to the same episode thing didn't happen very often. But it was a bit of a red flag for me.

nah, its not the dumbest (still really dumb tho)cuz i still think animation could be way better. most people who use that excuse like seeing pretty shiney anime so i guess story/plot/characters are not important to them. what a shame :(

The way I see a series like this, is that you have certain expectations of the series. You expect the crew to reach an island, get into wierd scenarios on it, and have Luffy defeat the major villain.
Sounds simple enough. HOWEVER, the way this done is always quite different and typically quite unexpected. And when the moment itself comes, each fight is made to be so different from previous ones you truly come to WANT Luffy to be the one to take them on.
Personally, while I love all the characters and they're unique fighting styles, I always love and look forward to Luffy's, as it feels like some sort of perfect combination of everything else, thrown in with a very comedic yet bad*** feel that makes each Arc truly worth it.
Give me a bunch of awesome, expected Luffy battles over heroes who repetitively lose/perform the same attacks/go emo and cry, any day.
EDIT:
Actually, in thinking about it, there really are only three things you can really expect in these Arcs:
-coming to a new island
-exploring the island
-Luffy fighting the main villainThere's plenty of times when only one or even none of the crew will fight. There's really no telling how these things will wind up going in the end.
Strange. I may have found a way to get more people into liking One Piece. Well, maybe it's an indirect cause, but on another site I recently put up the "Kaku-Cube" as my avatar (and had some people thinking it was a hippo and stuff o.o), and it ended up getting quite a bit of attention. Since I did that, I ended up getting about four people from that site interested in One Piece in about a week.
Oh yeah, one of the people actually got interested in it thanks to Sonique's site (which I had linked in my sig Xp ).
-
I was the browsing the OP sub-section of Narutofan Forums, and there was this person who posted saying that OP is not exciting enough.
He says that he watched the original version with subs from the computer, but after watching 10 episodes, he says he does not like it. The reason he gives is that it's not exciting enough and aimed TOO MUCH for younger audiences. He even said that Pokemon anime is more exciting than OP…
Of course, people suggested him to watch Arlong Park arc and onwards, but he has doubts and doesn't have any intentions to go on with OP, because he thinks it's aimed too much for young audiences...
-
Well, I'll agree that I didn't find the first 10 episodes to be the most exciting (although I was also pre-occupied with school at the time. . .), but by the end of the Baratie arc I was hooked and I wanted more (although Zoro using three swords in episode three floored me because somehow I failed to catch that in the opening. . . three times in a row. . .).
-
but on another site I recently put up the "Kaku-Cube" as my avatar (and had some people thinking it was a hippo and stuff o.o), and it ended up getting quite a bit of attention.
I post to several technical forums. Since my computers are named after OP characters, I have sig graphics like
http://members.aol.com/fouldragon/ksama.png
or
http://forums.gideontech.com/vps/showphoto.php/photo/3641/cat/500/ppuser/4322I usually will get a note from one or two OP fans who recognize the reference, but nobody seems to be drawn in by the reference. I probably need something wackier… gotta find that animation of Hatchi waving his tentacle-arms in a wave.
If someone posts "what anime should I watch", I violently support OP.
Once I made a mention of Usopp Hammer in expressing my distaste for a piece of hardware, and got several private messages along the lines of "I know that! Did you know (other user) was in K-F?" so maybe I'm preaching to a choir (or at least a non-OP-hating crowd)
-
Yeah, wackier might do it.
If someone posts "what anime should I watch", I violently support OP.
As do I. Everywhere. All the time.
-
These are the exact quotes from Gamefaqs about a person who doesn't like One Piece.
I actually don't like One Piece to much. Don't get me wrong, I read each weekly chapter and download the anime as soon as I get the chance….. but there's quite alot to dislike.
For example, to me, the whole Davy Back fight, and even the Skypeia arc, were completly useless. Other than intruducing the polyglyph in Skypeia, and the ship thing up there as well, there was no point to it. and unless Foxy comes back for some important reason latter, there was no purpose to the Davy Back fight.
Also, Oda seems to pull things out of his ass when he backs a character in a corner. Luffy using blood to fight Crocodile was genious, but Zoro all of a sudden being able to cut steel to defeat Mr.1 was random. The Gears were totally random as well, something to help defeat an enemy that was made to strong, but not hinted apon at all (Crocodile's weakness was shown, the blood was a clevar twist to it). Zoros Asura was completly dumb as well, to all of a sudden be able to split into 3 people.... and if he spun to get that effect, then he just ripped off Sanji! and, yes, even Sanji getting his burning kick was so random.... but at least it wasn't some "Uber-technique" like Asura or the Gears. Choppers Monster point is fine, but also random. In summary: He/she doesn't like OP because it is full of unexplained randomness and pointless stuff. He/she thinks that Skypiea and Davy Back Fight arc served no purpose to the main storyline at all. He/she thinks that the new techniques like Gear, Asura, and Devil Wind Kick are pull out of sheer randomness and have no explanation, which is lame.
-
The Davy Back Fight had no purpose? But you could say that about every bit of every anime. None of it has a purpose. It's just entertainment.
-
The Davy Back Fight had no purpose? But you could say that about every bit of every anime. None of it has a purpose. It's just entertainment.
He ment that it did not advance the story in anyway.
-
But you could say that about every bit of every anime. None of it has a purpose. It's just entertainment.
Yes, thank you! Someone gets it! ( >;_;)>
He ment that it did not advance the story in anyway.
True, but it's the same sort of concept with everything. Movies, shows, videogames, it still has to be interesting or no one will care about the story. Having a bit of fun through in the mix is good, even if it doesn't do alot with the story. The problem is when it sidetracks TOO much, so that it's more, truly random events and nothing to do with the main story (unless it's a series that doesn't have a story to begin with).
Oh yes. A friend of mine said he didn't like how Luffy would keep "getting up suddenly" when he was down in a fight and tried to claim it was "unrealistic" (first mistake, applying that kind of logic to OP Xp ). He then tried comparing it to the Kyuubi in Naruto. My response:
"You're claiming that pulling the power of a demon out is suppose to be more 'realistic' than an adrenaline surge?"
-
You should have pointed out that Luffy uses his head in some fights. He figures out that water can cancel out Crocodile's sand powers, allowing him to hit him.
And, I'm pretty sure I've seen the "knocked down, gets back up again, wins" situation in a large number of animes, perhaps even his precious Naruto (been a while since I last read it).
