The action of the episode was pretty cool. And Bolin >>> Mako
Though the plot involving of Korra's group was very stupid. I understand that they need to eat food in order to stay alive and all, but why do they casually go to the restaurant when the world is on fire ? Couldn't they eat with Tenzin at the air temple ? They haven't been togather for 3 years, right ?

The world isn't on fire yet, they are still under the impression that Kuvira plays fairly, as she hasn't been unmasked as the dictator/concentration camp/crazy spirit weapon/racist asshole that she is.

I ship em, but I don't like talking about non-het ships until they are actually canon. That way no one can tell me to shut up or look for ways to disprove it(like it matters, considering shipping is imaginary as proven with Zutara).
I ship all the time, I don't give a crap about canon (it's in my name, it will never be canon). I like multi-shipping, however. I like Asami x Korra, Zhu Li x Varrick, Lin x Tenzin, and…I was really into Katara x Zuko. I knew those pairings wouldn't be canon (well, the Varrick one could happen) but I like them anyway. In OP I could ship almost the entire crew with everyone but I only have a very strong preference for Luffy x Nami and a secondary for Franky x Robin.

6 chapters in. . .mostly OK material. It's indeed true the animation and overall production is EVEN better than the first series. Did they have a bigger budget, or it's the fact it was supposed to be a shorter series so they could spend more money on each episode?
That being said, and deeply admiring the super ballsy approach of the series so far, like the massive tone shift and how extremely different the world is, there're indeed problems. Maybe not so much problems as. . .things were funnier, livelier before. It's slightly devoid of life so far. I guess I still miss team Avatar and it'll take time to get used to the new characters, the new world, the new setting. It's much less spiritual and more. . ."gritty"?
The cast is OK. It probably still needs time. I found the brothers to suck big time at first, but I'm kinda warming to them. Korra went the opposite route; started awesome, now I don't like her that much. A bit too bratty and rebelious for rebeliousness sake.
And Amon. If I'm not mistaken, in 6 episodes (and he doesn't even appear in 2 of them) he's already said "all is going according to plan" 3 times. That's almost 1 per episode. What an ass. He's scary, though; that's something this series is doing well, the enemy faction IS scary. Just one run-of-the-mill, unnamed, no face chi blocker can take out the freaking Avatar, and that double electro baton fu-manchú fella is quite badass.
That's it for now. I'll keep marathoning.
Ed: Well, maybe a bit nitpicky, but. . .have to take this outta my system: seriously, the ENTIRE police force of RC covering air, water, all ins and outs, the audience. . .and they all get taken out, Amon enters the ring with a dozen bodyguards, they escape via a giant zeppelin. . .c'mon! It's an army of metal benders! Do something!

That's definitely the tone it's going for and why I mentioned there's less humor in the series. It gets cheerier at certain points later on, but I think the tonal feeling you're describing is one that sticks around throughout LoK.

Warning. This is a trend that most people get really annoyed with come second season. It will get better afterwards, but just something to keep in mind starting season 2. And even looking back in season 2, I feel like she was more justified in her actions than she's given credit for (which for many was none).

Gotcha. I'll keep that in mind. Robby told me Season 2 is the weakest, so I'm already preparing myself for any possible cringeworthiness coming my way.
-
Season 2 is the weakest, but it gives us some real gold. Varrick and Wan specifically. Also laying the groundwork for the cool stuff that happens in season 3. It has its moments, it's just not as …smooth as other seasons.
-
Ok, the season's end was pretty damn sweet. Everything from Korra's match with Tarrlok till they take down Amon was pretty good. Actually, episode 12 was like fucking balls to the wall for a while there; Iroh goes air battling an entire squadron of aeroplanes, a freaking mecha fight, taking on Amon. . .pretty cool stuff.
Then comes the, I guess, MUCH talked about Deus Ex and. . .yeah. Not impressed with that. I don't think they took it out of their asses THAT much, considering we already knew Aang knew how to take away bending from someone, so it wasn't a stretch to think "maybe he also knew how to bring it back". But the way it happened in less than a minute was obviously way beyond rushed. Blame Nickolodeon, I guess? Who knows.
Amon ended up being slightly disappointing, but what a sendoff they got, him and Tarrlok. That was. . .pretty ballsy for a kid's show.
Overall, not bad. Mako is definitely too bland so far, Bolin is slightly better, Asami kicks ass action wise, but she's basically just there to create that love triangle, nothing else. Her clashing with her father should've taken a MUCH bigger place in the show instead of. . .love triangling. Wathever.
Off to season two!

Its generally assumed that if they'd KNOWN they were getting a season 2 that it would have ended very differently. The ends of seasons 2, and especially 3/4 does it right though.

Yeah, the love triangle is a much disliked aspect. When they did it playfully with Sokka being a hit with all the ladies it was fine, or when they did relationships in general in TLA, but when they TRY to do a straight up love triangle its just… bleh.
-
Wasn't Nickelodeon responsible for pushing the love triangle stuff to captivate the target demographic? I remember reading something to that effect.

We can't blame nick for EVERYTHING. For that I blame Zutarans.
:ninja:

Yup. Definitely the fandom to "blame" for the creators trying to put shipping in the forefront.
Which reminds me…
That's because they needed more subtlety :)

We know the staff actively follows the internet and shipping, so this is clearly fanservice bait unless the show actually ends up going for the ship.
-
It seems poor Sokkah just got left out this series entirely. Other than the 1 flashback with Yakone…..did he get married to Suki?? Have kids? ( that doesn't seem likely since we've not heard any mention of them at all)
Also, watching the original series once again. I really forgot how much i love General Iroh. Every scene with him makes me laugh & smile.

Of course it's bait; it won't surprise me in the slightest if the ending has Korra with Mako again.
-

I think the comics had Suki leaning towards leaving him?
Personal theory is they've kept vauge about Sokka because he's Suyin's father… and possibly dead at this point in the series.
Interesting side note... and I'm not sure how much care the staff gives to the meaning of names, but.. Lin means "forest, fine jade, gem" while Suyin means "plain or unadorned sound". Interesting choices for an earthbender that's blind.
-
Considering how close the Aangs were, I doubt that they wouldn't want to hang out with their cousins without a good reason, specialy Bumi (by liking uncle soka) and Kaya (for shared waterbender culture)
-
Katara flat out said "my brother is dead", so Sokka is definitely dead in Korra. Which sucks, because I would've loved to see what old Sokka was up to in his twilight years.
-

When was that said? I only recall Katara saying roughly "My brother and friends are gone, it's your adventure now." I don't remember them ever explicitly saying Sokka had died, same way they never specifically said anything about Zuko or Toph till they showed up.
Aang they were pretty clear on, obviously.
(And at the very least he was still alive when the baddies of season 3 were last out and about)
-
First chapter of the series, they can't say dead, we know for a fact that Aang is dead, and soka had to have a mention or showed up by this point, there are like 5 chapters to go.
-

I went back and re-watched a bit of the first episode, and this is the full quote:
"Aang's time has passed. My brother and many of my friends are gone. It's time for you and your generation to take on the responsibility of keeping peace and balance in the world, but I think you're going to be a great Avatar."
So, yeah, Sokka is most likely dead. But yes, he was definitely around during Zaheer and gang's heyday.
-
Yeah, "gone" does not implicitly equal "dead".
Just "don't expect them to show up in this series, its about new characters".
Same reason Katara, Toph and Zuko have all been restricted to one or two episode cameos basically.
-

who in the what now? where you getting this stuff? which comic? Who's Suyin? I'm missing something. and how do you know these name meanings.
-
Hmm, ok, first two episodes of the 2nd season watched and. . .well, this is pretty great so far! Change of setting? Thank you! More humor? Thank you! Interesting new characters? Thank you! More spirituality? Fights against overpowered spirits? Aang's family shenanigans? Three generations all having certain relevance? World-building?
Everything seems like a big YES so far. . .except, I guess, the BIG elephant in the room and I can see where things might be going towards and why Season 2 seems to be the less liked. . .
. . .Korra is gonna be a bitch throughout the entire season, right?

The Chase. One of the followup comics.
Who's Suyin? I'm missing something. and how do you know these name meanings.
Toph's other daughter. Lin's sister.
And I looked up what the names mean. Most chinese and japanese names have meanings to them.

@Doffy.:
Are Avatar comics worth reading ?
Eh. During the dry period before Korra, maybe, but not so much.
The second arc tells the story of Zuko's mother but… its actually pretty dumb and bad.
To the point I haven't even looked at the third arc.

i don't remember that, in the chase, but it's been a while. ah. i'm bad with names. and, wow. you looked them up. what prompted that? just curios?

Well…for a good chunk of it, yes. Regardless of how justified one can find her actions and mood, a big issue is the writers keeping the character on the same setting so long it starts to grate. Truly turning that around was season 3's biggest accomplishment.
As for my season 2 feelings, I too started out finding the new angle interesting, but it ultimately caused both me and my wifeto shelve the series until peoples praise here for season 3 made me convince her to give it another shot. For me, one thing was Korra herself, another was how the storytelling got kinda lost in its own worldbuilding mythology, making the pacing kinda wonky...and the finale had a lot of hand-wavey vagueness. Kingdom Hearts-iness? Your mileage may vary on it, but to me it just eventually became a frustrating string of "but why?!" watching it. A weird combination of being highly simplistic, yet very confusing.

That's. . .kind of a downer. I can get over Korra bitchiness, but the setting the first two episodes have set-up seems too good to waste such potential.
I'll see where it goes. I hope I can get through 2-3 more eps today. That's one of the very (very) few good things about being unemployed, I have free time to spare. . .
Ed: Ok, so it wasn't 2 or 3 eps, I actually watched 6 of them. . .Ok. I need to get a life.
So, yeah. I think this has a bit of Dressrosa syndrome, in that there are like 3 or 4 threads going on at the same time and so you're left with the impression that non of them are given the attention they deserve. Then there's also a bit of cast misshandling, with Korra being an angsty annoyance and more love triangles getting in the way of the narration.
Then there's the, I guess, turning point of the season, the double episode "Beginnings". Hmm. Love the fact they changed the artstyle and the animation, love the new lore and world-building they implemented there. . .till the whole Raava and Vaatu thingie started going on and. . .it is kind of confusing. Cool and all, but not very clearly explained, or I guess the concept is kinda difficult to understand.
And did the first avatar just banish the spirits out of the world they've been livin in for who knows how long? I know it's for the sake of balance and peace, but. . .he banished them? Or they shouldn't have been there to begin with? They were there because of Vaatu? No spirit and human contact should've ever taken place? That was kinda confusing.
And I guess it's convenient the next. . .¿Astral Communion? ¿Harmonic Convergence? is taking place in a few weeks. . .I understood that correctly, right?
Well, I guess I'll be done in. . .1 or 2 days at this rate.

It's Harmonic Convergence and you can always just sell your body, or organs, or drugs. But if you're really desperate get a job at a local McDonald's.

Basically Wan's gripe is that at the time, it's pretty clear that humans and spirits can't live in peace together. When they obtained the power to bend the elements to their will, they seemed to only be able to use it to force out the spirits or go into direct conflict. He was probably pretty pissed that his spirit friends and his human friends pretty much annihilated each other. Granted, it was augmented by Vaatu's influence but the spirits were pretty pissed that the humans were infringing on their land.
Or something. Whatever. Just get through the rest of the season.
-
Warning, long post ahead.
Done with season 2. And. . .I don't even know how I feel? The visuals were incredible, there was some kick-ass action, and some touching moments. . .but the whole Vaatu vs. Raava thing still bugs me, plus other stuff. Like. . .
1- I guess Republic City is the Karakura town of the Avatarverse. Everything ends up happening there even if it doesn't make that much sense.
2- Kaiju fight as the end fight of season 2? That was. . .silly. Well, Kongoh Bancho's ending doesn't seem as outrageous now, but still silly. It wasn't that good either, and that just begs the question, how do you follow up a fight between the two most powerful spiritual entities in the history of the Avatarverse, that tower skyscrapers and send each other flying for hundreds of meters with each blow? There're 2 seasons left, so. . .yeah.
3- So Jinora turns into a light spirit that ¿brings back Raava to life? ¿inside Vaatu? ¿even though he never ingested Raava but instead whip it to total extinction? Ok. Also, I've kinda had it with sealing techniques. We've had too many of them during this season's end.
4- I actually liked that she just became the last Avatar ever. . .but I think that was avoided when Raava entered her again? I think? So her only penalty is the severed connection with past avatars. Ok. . .but I liked the idea of her being the last Avatar ever, so she had it in her to bring the final, durable balance to the world.
5- So her relationship with Mako can't work no matter what, so they send each other off with a passionate kiss, saying "I will always love you" "yeah, I will always love you too"? So. . .why can't it work again? Why do I have the feeling they'll be back togheter before long, thus making this statement totally false? Also, it must be tough being Asami. She's a freaking leftover for Mako, and he actualy just said he'll always love Korra no matter what. This is messed-up. A lot.
6- Kind of nitpicky but holy shit I HATED Vaatu's voice. No offense to the voice actor, but goddamn. It sounded freaking awful to my ears.
7- And last but not least, Korra needs to woman-up. She's kinda badass, at least action wise, but even then she constantly either passes out or needs saving, be it intergallactic, spiritual saving, or of the regular kind. Almost every single time she just fearlessly shouts "no, you will be going down, that I swear!", followed up by some brief (and legit) kickassery, she's then almost without fail suddenly stop dead in her tracks and either knocked unconscious or robbed of her powers, leaving her crying and in a total mess. Goddamnit.
And I guess some other stuff. The things I ended up loving the most, curiously, are the really smart callbacks to the first Avatar series; the dragon dance's origins, the comeback of that library that apparently sank into the spirit world, the fact the giant owl spirit actually hates humans and the past avatar and is siding with the baddie, the skeleton of that "knowledge lunatic", Zhao being a crazed spirit for all eternity but Iroh is actually living eternity in the spirit world in total peace and harmony. . .those were honestly the best moments for me.
Even if it looks like it, it wasn't bad, it was even quite good, or at least decent. There were many moments were I almost got goosebumps, but sadly many others were I was either "meh, ok, keep goin" or directly "hmm, what? excuse me? really?". But. . .in the end it wasn't that terrible. I think I expected even worse, so it wasn't that bad.
The ending though. . .don't know what to think of it either. Could work as a link to season 3.
-

The "woman up" thing aside, this was pretty much my issue since the start of Book 2. Not going to spoil Book 3. As great as that season is, Korra being captured, gagged up, and shred of prowess becomes really reoccuring to the point where I pretty much stopped caring for development through pain and total defeat. She just doesn't catch a break at all, and it's disappointing considering I missed how positively free and headstrong the character was in Book 1.
I swear. When I look back at the opening scene where Korra is a kid looking forward to being Avatar, I can't help but feel bad for her future and thought she was better off not leaving home.
-
it's unfortunate that like season 1, I think only season 2 was greenlit. They didn't find out about seasons 3 and 4 until later on in production (and it's clear given the continuity between seasons 3-4, even if each season still kept as a "mini-series" so to speak with a self contained arc). They probably would have saved the Big spirit climax until the end, thoug I guess how season 4 will end is still up in the air.

Reading that post, I was annoyed that Nick somehow found another way to screw us over again.
Having now seen the episode I am completely cool with it. -

I only caught up with season 2, 3 and 4 last week and this whole Wan backstory kinda bugs me. What happened with the badger moles, flying bison, 'ocean' and dragons being the original benders who taught people how to bend the elements?
Regarding Korra and Mako, maybe it's because I just finished a (looong) relationship in a similar way, but it actually makes lot of sense. Love is just one of the many factors that can keep a relationship going.
-
Compare wang wildly shooting fire with the dance of the dragons. Now aply that to the other disciplines, the turtles unlocked the potential, but the art was teached by the original benders.
-
Problem is Wang was the first Avatar, not the first bender or anything like that. The lion turtles unlocked the element bend in everyone and they would just walk away knowing exactly what to do. We saw Wang mastering firebending with a dragon, but only him (and only fire. In all the others he was trained by Raava).
And even if we didn't saw people learning bending matrix style, if you think about how humans saw spirits and magical animals back in that time, I think we can be pretty sure no one (safe the airbenders) learned anything from nature creatures.Of course, it could be the whole thing about flying bison, dragons, etc. teaching the first benders was nothing but baseless myths. It's not like the Raava and Vaatu story was common knowledge, so maybe people just made up their own stories about how bending was developed.
Also, I just remembered that guru from ATLA telling Aang that at first there were no element division and the manking bended the energy freely. Although maybe this could be prior to the "lion turtle cities", I guess…
-
That's the oficial explanation, take it or leave it.
-
Varrick. I love you so much! You saved this episode. You saved this series.
-
In a couple hours the eighth chapter of Korra Book 4 will be released online, and I suppose, if you are none the wiser, a few minutes into it you will feel duped and yell at your screen, “Hey! This is a crummy clips episode!” And that is (almost) exactly what it is––except we all worked really hard to make sure at the very least it isn’t crummy. I’m here to explain why we ended up having to do one.
Sometime around a year and a half ago we were similarly duped on a large scale. We got the news from the higher-ups that our Book 4 budget was getting slashed, almost to the tune of an entire episode’s budget. We had two options: 1) let go a significant number of crew members several weeks early, or 2) make a clips episode. We never considered the first option. We weren’t going to do that to our crew, and even if we were callous enough to do so, we never would have been able to finish the season without them. But having grown up on TV in the ’80s and ’90s, we all dread clips episodes, where characters sit around saying, “Remember that time when…” and leftover footage is reheated for no one’s enjoyment.

Nick are assholes. This series is way too good to be on this network. It has gotten no love at all. Its a bloody miracle it lasted this long.
-
Loved the conference call, and every bit of self deprecating humor. I still don't like the prince, but grandma makes it less anoying.
-
I lost it when Varrick called Vaatu an evil terrifying kite.
