Yeah, the season premiere wasn't bad, but it was tediously paced. Those last few minutes, however, really saved it.
Doctor Who

It felt a bit long but the last moments made me intersted in the second part.
! Yaz is a lot more entertaining to me this time around. She seems to do shit without being annoying. Ryan continue to be meh.
! I thought england was like super aware of the doctor's existence. He married the queen. Really this new england is strange with how distant they are of the doctor.
! I'm not sure what I think of this actor as the master yet but as writing go I liked it. Spending 2 hours trying to understand a race he team up with with his archenemy seems like the kind of troll move the master would make. And I like the idea that he called it the spymaster to both stroke his own ego and mock the doctor for not seeing the obvious.
! Bomb in the plane is also good.
! I hope the whole everything is a lie will lead to something interesting and not just a minor point. Maybe something about how Gallifrey isnt from this universe since we had a bunch of earth when they decoded the message. So Torchwood and Unit are officially dead? That's sad.
-
It was an alright episode. Felt much more like a Doctor Who episode than most of last season.
Some things were dumb though. The chase scene was stupid and totally irrelevant. Why not use the Tardis?
Speaking of Tardis, why can random Humans just pick up and transport the Tardis from one place to another. That was just dumb. I know Unit did it in Day of The Doctor, but I assume its because the Tardis recognized them and allowed it. Otherwise, why wouldn't anyone just steal and hide the Tardis from the Doctor.
I was also a bit dissapointed in the Doctor. She seems to take orders from people very simply. There's a moment where she leaves people to apparently die, because Graham(the non expert), tells HER, The Doctor, that its too dangerous and they should retreat. Like, What in the Actual Fuck?
Last few minutes were pretty cool though. That was a dope reveal, and it kind of makes this new Era of Doctor Who feel like its connected to Modern Doctor Who.
-
I'm stoked to see Sacha Dhawan in Doctor Who, but a little sad that he probably won't ever be the Doctor now.
-
I feel like the Tardis get move all the time. It stays put because it's the size of a police box and the bad guy dont know where he put it(Usually because it vanished or got kind of lost). The real problem when there is one is getting inside.
Chase scene scene felt weird I agree. Especially when we went full gun action. I think it could work if it was maybe just Yaz in Ryan in it.
I didnt take the doctor listenning as her taking order but as her taking advice or cooperating. I mean she did get her own guy as soon she wanted to with no regard for that high spy agent. I think she's behaving fine. Its your classic the doctor want to do more but the companion reminds him there's a better way or that he cant do everything. I say give her time to grow on you.

Capaldi managed to appear in like 3 roles in this universe so dont lose hope.

Pretty sure humans have always been able to move the TARDIS around. It doesn't happen that frequently, but it has happened.

True, nothing is impossible, but this is definitely more significant than just a one shot side character.

I'm pretty sure every companion from the mid 70s to the mid 80's piloted the TARDIS at some point.
Also Clara and Ashildr flew it. -

But Im surprise that many companions know how to fly the tardis.

Im used to England being the doctor's second home and them being kind of in on the joke. Im not a fan of them being like any country now. It doesnt feel as homey.

In that case, there are plenty of episodes in the classic series where the TARDIS was picked up and moved around by civilians. If you would like to see some nerdy talk about the weight of the TARDIS and how it has never been consistent, read this thread: https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/7951/how-much-does-the-doctors-tardis-weigh-from-the-outside

Quick thought after seeing part 2…
! Character spoiler:
! The Master speaking to nazis: I always took you for reasonable people.
! HOLY **** -
I like the episode but it feels that they are course correcting it a bit hard. There's a middle ground between old and new.
! Blowing Gallifrey and returning the doctor to a sad sack pretending to be happy that quickly is a bit fast. And I cant help but feel it's all due to the critism last season.
! Im curious about that timeless child thing tho and the out of time companions were quite enjoyable. Maybe more than the regular one. -
Like last week, decent episode, but it did launch an intriguing season arc.
! -I still don't exactly understand what the Kassavin were, what they were trying to do, or what their goal was (or how the re-writing DNA thing works)
-Still feels like they're tying too hard with the pro-women stuff. The Doctor just so happens to come across two oft-overlooked historical women who were important to the development of computers. -
! I thijk the light energy race plan was your classic RTD plan of we gonna replace humans then we spreqd into the universe.
! Im thinking the timeless child is gonna be the origin/source of either regeneration energy or Akron energy. And the child is split across all timelords or tardises. Or the kid is what is in the void the timelord watch in at graduation
! Meeting more women then previously doesnt bother me. I took it more as Chibnall finding a more organic way to include the history he's so interested in sharing. Some lines do but it could just be me being sensitive since they could also be joke and they dont come that often. The resolution felt a bit quick.
-
! This episode began giving off Cybermen vibes, but TBH, I'm glad that isn't what it came to because the whole idea of them independently being come up with over and over and over again has gotten a bit tired.
-
I thought it was a strong opening, which will hopefully bode well for the rest of the series. Any time they're hinting at messing with lore I get a little anxious, but hopefully they won't do anything too crazy, I've had enough retconning over the years with Gallifrey.
-
Well…that was an episode.
! Jack is back and now we have a new "Doctor". Honestly stumped as to how this will all play out, so I'm looking forward to the continuation of the season arc.
-
That was a wild ride.
I wonder if chibers is going the whole hog and saying all those faces in brain of morbius were the doctor.
-
Really enjoyed this episode. Fun ride from beginning to end with neat callbacks. Although the implications can go horribly wrong later.
I love seeing him back. I like her in that role.
! For the little time she existed I think I might I like her presence more than 13th.
! I didn't expect the return of the Chameleon arc at all. -
That was a wild ride.

That came to my mind as well. For those that don't know, there was a push at one point to make Tom Baker the final regeneration, hence the unidentifiable faces shown in one episode. The same thing was done to the Master, so he was stealing bodies (much like the newest one did). Obviously they changed their minds about that, so those faces are just weird. Another interesting thing that a lot of people don't think about much: I don't remember which episode it was, but there was a scene with the 3rd doctor where he's hearing the voices of previous doctors in his head, and suddenly there's a female voice.
I think probably the most logical conclusion, assuming this is real or not some parallel universe, is this is pre-Hartnell. The second doctor was the first to use a Sonic Screwdriver. (Bootstrap paradox for wanting to build one?) Maybe people's theories about this Master being an older regeneration is correct. I think this new development lends some credence to it.
And yeah, Jack being back is cool. I had heard rumors about it, but since there has been rumors he's coming back like every season, I figured it was bunk.
-
I expect it to be an alternate timeline thing where Hartnell regenerated into this doctor instead of Troughton. And this alternate timeline has something to do with the secrets of Gallifrey. My current theory being the one with this doctor is the original timeline and the timelords use the timeless child to become the ones from the timeline we know.
But even if it's just another secret regeneration I expect they will find some hole to put it early 5 but post-Hartnell.

I just saw a quote from Chibnall saying it's not a trick or a parallel universe. Show runners aren't always truthful, but there you go.
the problem with this regeneration being post Hartnell is then there are too many regenerations in a cycle. Unless - The Doctor has always had limitless regenerations (maybe that's what the timeless child means?) and just forgot and assumed he was given more later. There are also a lot of "Season 6B" fan theories out there, a lot of people have theorized for a while that there is missing time between the second doctor where the Timelords used him to do their dirty work before dumping him off at Earth as the third doctor.

With a life they want erased from the doctor's memory ( prize for good service or to forget a deep secret) the timelords would know to give him an extra one so he doesn't know the count is off.
Or they can retcon metacrisis didn't count and threw the doctor off.
But yeah I don't expect show runners to be really truthful. I expect them to be picky in their wording or vague and sometimes even lie.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Im really interested in Lee being the master and they forced him to become the ass we know because he was too much of a pacifist or too kind.
-

That's….a bit of a stretch to say he just was given an extra regeneration to throw him off....Would be lame writing at best. There isn't any precedent for adding just one or two extra regens, also it's pretty clear that it's something that isn't taken lightly and almost never done for anyone except under unusual circumstances.
-
Didn't they proposed the master a set of regeneration to help them out one time? If it is their biggest secret and the doctor is a pretty big deal I don't think it's taken lightly to make sure he doesn't know what happened. He is either dangerous enough or helpful enough to warrant being extra careful.
Like I said my true theory is a previous timeline that the timelord erased to make the one we know. And the buried memories the master was talking about(that every timelord has) is their lives in that original timeline.

That was my fave Doctor Who ep probably in about 5 years. Is it a blip or is the show finally turning a corner? Hopefully the latter!
! The characterisation of the guest stars was fantastic. My favourite thing in this ep was that it ends with Clairmont disliking Byron earlier than she should and assumedly would now not have get pregnant with his child (guess it's not considered a fixed point in time!). It's a really nice touch because unless you knew the history of them you wouldn't realise it. Very subtle in a series that hasn't been that way recently. One of the things that makes me really like the episode. Another is that everyone INSTANTLY got the connection between Jack's warning and the cyberman here. And the cyberman got what it wanted because it gave them no choice, not because they were so dull witted that they only noticed it after the fact.

It was a good episode. Credit to the director for making it actually seem different and tense.
My only complaint about the episode is the Doctor going on this big hypocritical speech about how one life is important when she's spent most of this season not really giving a fuck about all the other people who've been dying.
[Hide]Heck in this two episodes 2 characters die, and absolutely no one shows any care or concern. One of them even died protecting a child but she's barely grieved or mentioned. They all just go on to happily ever after. I fucking hated it, because it seemed like the message was, if you're a famous person the doctor will save you, but if you wash pans for a living, then go fuck yourself.[/Hide]
-
I like really liked the atmospheric aspect of this episode. It was delightfully spooky. So much so that I didn't need the twist in this one.
-
Maybe it's because I don't know much about Percy and Mary Shelley or Lord Byron or any of that stuff, but I thought this episode was fairly standard for the first half
! But then the Cyberman showed up and things did start to pick up after that.
-
I've watched various Who stuff, classic and new, over the past 7 years but only now am I trying to watch all 50 plus years in as close to chronological order as I can. Obviously, the tv episodes have a fairly clear chronology to them, but the big finish audios and the books don't fit into the timeline so perfectly. Some big finishes are direct sequels to classic stories, some of them loosely fit into continuity because of who's in the tardis at the moment and whichever adventures they reference. And then there's First Doctor companion Susan hanging out with the Eighth Doctor for a while before returning to the First, referencing her tales with Paul McGann. :/
Anyway, still in the First Doctor stuff. Halfway finished with The Time Meddler. Steven just might be my favorite companion of the First, thanks to this bit after he drunkly stumbles into the Tardis and doesn't believe any of the craziness he's been told.
Vicki: "Tardis. It stands for," counts on fingers with occasional pauses "Time. And. Relative. Dimensions. In Space."
Steven: pause "Idby."
Vicki: "What?"
Steven: counting on fingers, no pauses "I. Don't. Believe. You." -

! tbf, by the time they're dead, the doctor already knows she's dealing with a massive galaxy wide threat, so people she can't save isn't something she should be focusing on. But yeah, she's been pretty bad on that this series.

! Another thing I really liked about the ep was the structure. we begin with weird things happening, and the figure in the lake is just another weird thing. Then we later find out the figure in the lake is trying to get in the house, and the ai and percy are doing all the weird stuff to keep it out - and the ai doesn't care about anyone in the house so when it does stuff it doesn't care who it affects. The shift from mystery to explanation is really well handled where again most of the season it just hasn't been, and it made the first half - which I already liked - retroactively better because the explanation made sense and was satisfying. Loved the idea of the cyberman having to navigate a maze for days.

! Actually, while watching the episode, my mind raced trying to think about and see if everything made sense. One thing I'm still not clear is why Duelly McDuelerson (sorry, I forget his real name) became a zombie and walked through a wall.

I'm usually indifferent to those 60s-style men of action types, but William Russell brought so much charm to Ian. Ian's the exception to my rule.

! My assumption was that he was like that because of the real ghosts. And because he wasn't under his own power, the perception filter didn't work on him so he was able to actually use the real doors.
–editDesa's idea makes sense too, although I thought the doctor looked a bit too puzzled for it to be that.

To me, Barbara will always be my favorite. She was probably the most effective, intelligent and strong willed female companion all the way until Ace in the 80s.
-
So that was a thing
! The "changes everything" stuff was really just cartmel masterplan and series 6b duct-taped together with some minor alterations. I wonder if Tecteun is supposed to be Omega? The Morbius stuff was a nice touch for longtime fans.
! Speaking of which, I wonder how this was for new fans? Felt like kind of a big infodump. I didn't mind it as it was all kind of fanwankish stuff and I enjoyed a lot of the references, but I wonder how people who have only been watching for a few years would have taken it?
! The only surprise to me was the Judoon being able to transmat into a tardis.
Overall it was kind of average with no real shocks. To me, Barbara will always be my favorite. She was probably the most effective, intelligent and strong willed female companion all the way until Ace in the 80s.
I'd have said Zoe over Barbara. Romana I and Leela would be in that conversation too, but up until Ace, Zoe would be my fave female companion. Brave and as smart as the doctor. Her causing a computer to destroy itself was always one of my fave moments.
-
! I can see this revelation pissing a lot of people off. In addition to the Doctor becoming a "superhero", now she has a "chosen one" angle to her (if she didn't already). Me, I have mixed feelings on it, but I'd like to wait and see how this all plays out.
! Still, good ending to what was overall a pretty strong season. Big improvement over last season where it felt like everyone was still trying to figure everything out. -
It was an ok finale. Nothing particularly and nothing great. I feel I don't know Chibnall enough to care about the reveals. I'll have to wait what the future looks like.
! I have no idea why any cybermen especially this one would listen to the master, go to a deserted planet and not instantly kill him. Also the actor seems to being doing 11th mannerism.
! Cybermen to me has always been half machine half human so the last episodes going full it's just an armour and you're a dude inside hasn't been to my liking. The Cyberlords reminded me that Jacket Morpheus has when he is on Zion giving his speech.
! I expect where the doctor comes from will be Chibnall's big thing. That and the division. We already had the doctor help make Daleks maybe the division will reveal how she is related to other big staple of the whoverse.
The monsters at the end are fun. I look forward to the special. With the reveal
! Who wants random actors playing one off doctors from the countless lives?
How fine the doctor and companions are with others sacrifice continue to bother me.
-

Yeah, it wasn't really surprising in the end, was it? It all played out kind of how I expected in most ways. I get the impression some fans are mad about messing with history, but it's not really new, just old ideas repackaged from the "EU" days. Kind of surprised there weren't any references to something akin to looms, lol. Overall I thought it was executed just fine, I think Sascha really was the glue that held it together though. Good casting choice.

Eh, Zoe was supposed to be progressive because she was from the future, but as far as how she actually acted and interacted with the Doctor and other companions, she was still more just "the girl" IMO. Barbara really commanded the respect of the Doctor more than anyone else. Romana II was also really good, I really enjoyed her on the show. Still waiting for some kind of a return.
-
So, that was quite the retcon.
-
Yeah, but unlike the retcon of "Clara made everything in the Doctor's life happen" it's actually interesting and even fixes a few old plotholes created by other producers who tried to retcon the series (e.g. the unknown regeneration faces in The Brain of Morbius).
-
I don't like retcons so the revised origin of the doctor doesn't appeal to me but it might let actors make fun cameos and Big finish could do a lot of cool thing with it. To me it's like Maul not being dead in Star Wars. I dont like it but people did cool stuff with it.
I'm fairly intrigued by that division story and seems like it could be cool.
-
I kind of hate it. It could lead to interesting things, but that's about all it has going for it in my eyes. I always hate when a character goes from being special from the choices they've made, to being born that way. I kind of like this theory I found about it, but need a bit more time to think on it. How about all of you?
-

That's a fun theory too and not impossible. It would be a bit like Blade Runner 2049 in a sense.
But I wouldn't be surprised if Chibnall is just trying to get the story back to what is essentially the DW Extended Universe, what is known as the Cartmel Masterplan, that was supposed to be written into the TV show had it not been prematurely canceled but continued on in novels and comics for 15 years before the show came back. The Doctor is hinted at being something more than just a Time Lord, a being known as "The Other". They also try to incorporate Philip Hinchcliffe's plot to make Tom Baker one of the final incarnations of the Doctor, as it was explained why in the episode The Brain of Morbius, he has all these other faces shown other than the previous three. (He also made Roger Delgado the final Master incarnation and invented the idea of the Master stealing bodies instead).
The thing about being special from the choices they made v. being born that way, I don't think is really that much of an issue. Everything that makes the Doctor the character we know and love is still about the choices they made. That they happened to have a mysterious origin that was possibly exploited by Time Lords doesn't change much about the character, just changes what little we know about Time Lord origin. There could even be some bootstrap paradox involved with the Time Lord tech, and maybe the Timeless child of Gallifreyan origin after all.

I got a notification on my Big Finish app as I was heading to bed and it sounds like something worth mentioning to any Doctor Who place I could think of. On Friday evening at 7pm UK time, Big Finish is going to stream one of their 8th Doctor audio stories, The Chimes of Midnight, over SoundCloud while the story's writer and the actress who played the Doctor's companion live tweet
More details can be found here if anyone's interested:

This clip is over a year old but it seems like its a fun one.

Very well done fan edit giving six something resembling an actual regeneration.
-
A couple of the impressions are really good, particularly Baker and Tennant, and Smith is pretty good. I thought they actually had the actors in on in it. Pertwee was really good too, I assumed it was his son.
The rest of the impressions not so much.

Tom Baker or Colin? Doesn't really matter, because the same guy did the voices for 3, 4, and 5. Cast list is here
