Doctor Who

The Daleks are the most consistently used rival for them in the show; if you go by books and things like that, the one species that was the biggest threat to the Time Lords were the Great Vampires.
The timelords had vampires rivals!!!!! I need to know more about that. Is it a novel or comic book?
The Time Lords and the Daleks are about the only people who are any good at it; some of the other species, like the Sontarans, had access to time manipulating technology but it didn't always work as intended if at all.
Makes sense

Thank you. The master is actually mmuch later than I tought. I would have expected evil timelord by the second doctor. Also people are way more conservative with him than I expected. And I would say motivation for Cybermen is more earth convertion than extermination. Extermination seems really reductive.
Well, it was probably at that point that Karen and Arthur decided they would be leaving the show and he had to speed it up… but due to BBC's scheduling and the random hiatuses they didn't end up leaving for a while after that but it led to a weird inorganic break in the season that can't have been really planned in.
It's also absolutely super duper clear that he rushed things when Matt decided to leave. He set up a big discover Gallifrey arc in the 50th anniversary, then solved it half assed in the very next episode and hurriedly wrapped up the Silence plot arc solved a bunch of things in quick throwaway lines... including wrapping up River's story in a dvd bonus short that never aired. (That he had a chance to do it right with Capaldi two years later he couldn't have known at the time.)
Similarly, Jenna Coleman staying on LONGER mucked things up too, since she had a perfect out in the season 8 christmas episode after her arc was completely done.
The finding of Gallifrey sure was strange in how fat it was. He must really have been an unlucky fella to have so many people leaving at the wrong time. I mean 5 people and 3 different arcs affected because of it. I would say he should have keep to it with Clara but it is a person's actual job. But damn if it doesn't make a succession of strange things.
Funny enough I don't think Moffat has ever been more Moffat than with Smith wether it is in the good or the bad so I'm surprise they didn't leave together. Maybe that was the plan and Matt left early? There was a fascinating synergy to them.
I will say Moffat has the better Master. RTD's was just way to ridiculous. It did give me one of my favorite moment were he opens the sky to "Here come the drums" but he was way to over the the top. And it wasn't really an actor thing since Moffat did a decent job with him in the last finale.

I believe they only appeared in one TV story, State of Decay. They've since appeared in several books and a few comics and audio stories.

There is one TV appearance, a serial called State of Decay in season 18. But all the fleshed out history is in books, comic books, and audio.

http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/State_of_Decay_(TV_story)Thank you. The master is actually mmuch later than I tought. I would have expected evil timelord by the second doctor. Also people are way more conservative with him than I expected.
There was another renegade Time Lord that is referred to as "The Monk" who appeared in the first Doctor's time, in the serial "The Time Meddler". The term "Time Lord" wasn't even invented yet at that time, though, nor was Gallifrey. I think the last story of the second Doctor introduced the concept of Time Lords and the third Doctor first used the word Gallifrey.
The Master has mostly been sporadically used, with the exception of the third doctor's era in which it is almost comical how often he appears. He was really his arch nemesis. But what happened was Roger Delgado died tragically in a car crash, and for a long time nobody really wanted to recast the Master out of respect to that. And I would say motivation for Cybermen is more earth convertion than extermination. Extermination seems really reductive.
"Assimilation" is the Cyberman drive. Extermination is the Daleks'.

The fact that they even rushed the "finding an extra regeneration" plot into a single episode instead of milking that for a season, something that had been sitting around as an obvious thing to milk for literally decades it's just… yeah, he was not expecting Matt to leave when he did. Maybe if the 50th anniversary had been a regular season instead of just two specials it would have worked out differently.
And Moffatt was pretty clear about wanting to leave earlier than he did (maybe not when Matt did in season 7, but earlier than season 10) but there was literally no one able to replace him. The burnout was real by the last Capaldi season.
-
The interesting thing is, a guy on reddit is currently in the process of transcribing all of Moffat's old DWM production notes and this was actually something that recently came up:
"I got nowhere near planning for the series before Matt told me he was leaving. No, hang on, that's not true. Blimey, that's made a memory surface! I had a few scattered notions, and I think I talked Matt through them. I knew he was probably moving on, but until he confirmed it, I kept him in the loop. I probably hoped I'd lure him into staying. I think I talked about the Doctor questioning if he was a good man, and the presence of some other character (who became Missy, I suppose), who was trying to tempt him to a darker path. Oh there's nothing harder to remember than the road not taken - which makes sense, I guess. But yes, I have some hazy memory of sitting in a restaurant with Matt, talking of good men and bad friends. It should be noted, however, that nights out with Matt tend to make for hazy memories…"

While I wholeheartedly loved Capaldi, I still feel like Matt needed one more season and he and Moffat probably should have left together.

Pretty much. I also would have been okay with Moffat on Capaldi's first season and then a switch in showrunners, it'd be nice for one actor to actually get a variety again, and not just Tom Baker.
Much as I liked Moffatt, and the Matt Smith era is probably going to remain my personal favorite Who era, Moffatt definitely ran out of steam and started repeating himself heavily.

-
The trailer is way better than the season itself. XD
-
Oh yeah. Tom Baker's last season. Start of the John Nathan-Turner period. Or "weird" period.
Strangely, I actually did like Meglos.
-
Well, the ending to that episode was…...odd.
-
I don't care what anyone says, that episode was brilliant.
-
RTD would have loved this episode. That seems like his kind of weird.
I enjoyed the retuning actress and Graham as usual. Interesting how the dad way of precessing grief was not really resolved in a neat bow.
-
Oh hey, they actually made an attempt to pronounce the Norwegian characters' names properly. As a Norwegian, the effort is appreciated… even if the result did sound a bit awkward.
-
Saw the season finale. It was… okay. Felt more like just another episode rather than the end of the season though, even with the callbacks to previous episodes and them tying up Graham's character arc for the season.
…I mean I'll take this over Hell Bent or Journey's End any day, but it does feel rather underwhelming.
-
Oh. Guess that was the season finale. Didn't think about it until you said it.
Not the best season I've seen, but I want more. Like how I felt after 12th's first season. The main cast is good, but they don't "pop" yet. A lot of the episode plots don't help. There's good focus on characters but the antagonists are lacking. 13 needs better (interesting/memorable) enemies to bounce off of. -

Yeah, it wasn't particularly grand, but neither were a lot of previous season finales, or worse, they were overblown messes, so it's fine. Looking forward to the New Years Special. I hear it's calle "Resolution" so maybe it will be more of a season finale than the season finale.
-
It felt like the fourth episode of a second season. The one where a villain you know come back but we are also just having another episode. Didn't feel like a finale but I enjoyed it and considering how little scale the season has been I guess returning villain make for a finale.
I was much more into the Stenza this time.
Graham is always great. Probably my favorite chracter of the season. Still don't give a damn about Yaz.
13th is a fine doctor but I still need her to sell me in intensity. There is that one moment where she makes neuro-blockers that seems like a classic the doctor is solving the pressing problem but her tone make it sounds like she just helping you clean a stain from a shirt. There is no urgency. But I can her growing in a second season.

Isn't that often the case? They insist on making the regenerations happen in them and 10th farewell to everyone was in it as well.

People hate Journey's End? I get End of Time but Journey's end?

I mean, it copped out of the Doctor's regeneration in a matter that made no sense there and has made just as little sense every time they brought it up since, and resolved the biggest crisis in the show's history with Donna doing technobabble.
…That's really about it. I can't even recall the rest of the episode all that well, I just really hate those two elements.
Anyway... So looking at the title of this video you might just immediately gag, but for the record, this video is a parody of the sort of criticisms that have been thrown against Series 11. It is not actually claiming that Doctor Who is "dead" because it got "too PC" (as if the show hasn't been political since literally day one), it's pretty much just a long and sarcastic response to all the people who actually say that.

RTD is gay? I did not know that. I wouldn't guess it from his writing. I guess the soap opera might explain the silly while Moffat comedy background explain the quirky. I enjoy Gatiss ass an actor(Mycroft or in Twice upon a time).
I don't think this season was that into politics. I mean not that much more than anyone. Moffat defintely had a feminism thing which could be good(I enjoy River and Clara with 12th) or distracting(that episode in Sherlock). RTD made an episode about the freaking devil and made a slave race that the doctor ignored until it was pointed out.
Chibnall just had some racism and war are bad. And a slight touch of woman had less power in the past. It is pretty standard stuff. But I can see how since it's history and that grounded nature make it feels more educational and political than fun. But then again first season's of Doctor's don't have the best track records and it s a new showrunner learning to make a good version of the show.

Well yes, that was basically the whole point; People have been condemning this series for being too "SJW-pandering" or whatever when nothing they complain about is new. And that's not even getting into how I feel like previous series have been FAR more in-your-face about how progressive they were than this series… Moffat's handling of homosexuals immediately comes to mind. Of course there are valid concerns to be had about how Series 11 was written, like how Yaz felt like an afterthought in pretty much every episode that didn't specifically focus on her, or how Chibnall's scripts were consistently just sort of… okay, (and he very much continued a problem I've had with Moffat, namely him stretching himself far too thin by writing too many episodes himself instead of sticking to less stories and making those few stories really shine) but most of the criticisms I've seen floating around YouTube have just been about the show's supposed "virtue-signaling".
-
It's the same problem with The latest Star Wars. The small but vocal anti-SJW crowd is so loud and obnoxious that it makes it really hard to just talk about the real issues that actually exist and not their personal hang ups.
-
Sure is quiet here… Anyway, I saw the new year's special the other day. It frustrates me that it's not gonna be on the Series 11 BD-set because it was so much better a finale than the actual season finale was, and it was also better than at least most of the episodes Chibnall wrote for Series 11, tbh. (In general I feel the season got better when we got to the second half that was largely not written by him). But yeah, it felt like it did a better job of tying up some loose ends for the season, the final shot felt more grand and fitting for what will be the last we see of these characters for a year… Oh, and I suppose being the only episode of this new era of the show to feature a classic villain helps too. Not that I mind that Series 11 focused on new concepts, but y'know, you can only go so long with a new Doctor without having them face off against a Dalek… (Not even gonna bother spoilering that because 1: the episode's been out for a month and a half, and 2: the internet was so bad about keeping their mouths shut on that particular twist that I feel it was kind of impossible to miss.)
-
The Macra Terror animated recon is out now. I really enjoyed it, they've taken great strides in the animation since the Power of the Daleks release. It's still not perfect, but it's a million miles away from the Reign of Terror animation, and significantly better then Power and Shada. The story itself was very fun too.
-
I saw a clip of the animation and it definitely looks a lot better.

Anyone Looking forward to watching Good Omens with Tennant?
-
Good Omens? Yes. Tennant? No.
He just sort of always plays himself. He's fine, but he's just always…. David Tennant, no matter the role. Can't really escape that like I can with other actors for some reason.
-
So for a while now I've been listening to the Doctor Who audio dramas and, well, I figured I'd give my thoughts on some of the ones I've listened to
! Main Series (1-50): There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said. These first 50 episodes prove that it truly was a worthwhile endeavor to make a Doctor Who audio series. Mainly in that it redeemed the Sixth Doctor by giving him several amazing stories, and actually gave Paul McGann a chance to actually BE the Eighth Doctor. Unfortunately, the Fifth and Seventh Doctors don't shine as much, possibly due to weak scripts and relatively lethargic performances, but Davison did get Spare Parts, which was pretty great.
Not to mention we got some great new companions out of the mix as well (mainly Evelyn and Erimem). Sure, with 50 episodes not every one is a knockout, but most of them are pretty enjoyable. My favorites are your favorites, The Holy Terror, The One Doctor, Jubilee, Davros (so yeah, basically anything with the Sixth Doctor, though Chimes of Midnight is also fantastic). Unfortunately, this segment did have to end on a sour note with Zagreus, which I thought was alright, but not exactly the best payoff (and I'm one of the more generous critics as this story is pretty universally loathed).
! Main Series (51-100): So I know it's not like audio dramas are really broken out into "seasons" or anything, but since Big Finish decided to make a "special" 50th episode and then a "special" 100th episode, I figure this is as good a way as any to divide up the main range. Anyway, this stretch of episodes continues to be entertaining, but…I dunno, I feel like there weren't as many stand out episodes this time around. Yeah, there were good, even great ones, but I don't know how many of them I can really call "iconic" or tell people "Yes, you absolutely HAVE to see this!" With the Eighth Doctor, we got the Divergent Universe arc, which was a neat idea, but I don't feel it quite lived up to its potential (though it did give us the great episodes Scherzo and Natural History of Fear). And it also introduced the new companion C'rizz who is...fine, I guess. The Sixth Doctor continues to amaze with some consistently strong scripts like Arrangements for War, The Nowhere Place, and especially The Reaping (which also single-handedly redeems Peri's entire character). The Fifth and Seventh Doctors also improve quite a bit this time around with some stronger material like Live 34, The Council of Nicaea, Red, Circular Time, and Son of the Dragon. We also get a great new companion in Hex, the timid nurse who serves as a great counterpoint to the brash Ace. Oh yeah, and Tegan came back, which is a...thing that happened. Guess we'll be seeing more of her later. Anyway, towards the end of this run we get some new showrunners, so to speak, who try the novel idea of dividing each release into multiple episodes (and considering how needlessly long some of the stories have been up to this point, it was a long time coming). And that brings us to the 100th episode. This time around they pulled their punches a bit and, rather than making the overly bloated mess that was Zagreus, they just give us four short stories with the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn, everyone's favorites. And I have to say, it's a much stronger special for it. So yeah, I'd say the writing overall was probably more consistent this time, and gave some much-needed better stories for 5 and 7, but still, not as many standout episodes. But hey, it's Doctor Who; take the good with the bad.
! I, Davros: A very chilling look at Davros's rise to power. I mean…there's not much else to say than that. Terry Molloy gives a chilling performance as Davros and the writers create an equally chilling and engaging script that makes you want to listen to see how everything will play out. I definitely recommend it, but be warned that this is definitely one of the darkest entries in the Doctor Who canon.
! The Light at the End - And here we go. Big Finish's very own 50th Anniversary spectacular that brings all four of the audio Doctors together, plus Tom Baker! And…that pretty much is the main draw of this special, just getting to hear all of the Doctors together in one story (unlike in Zagreus, where the other Doctors weren't really the Doctors). The story isn't anything spectacular and honestly gets pretty bogged down in timey-wimey jargon, but it's still a fun light-hearted romp where everything turns out good in the end, and that's just what an anniversary special should be. Not to mention it's great finally hearing Tom Baker in the role again.
! Destiny of the Doctor - To date, this is the first and only story I've listened to where, in lieu of a full audio cast, it has only person narrating each episode (plus one other actor in a guest role). I know they've done this approach before, mainly in the Companion Chronicles, and I was honestly pretty hesitant about the idea, but the actors (all returning Doctor Who alumni) do a great job of bringing the material to life. That said, I still prefer a full audio cast, but this was a fun adventure (4, 6, and 9 were the best). And perhaps some day I'll given those Companion Chronicles stories a listen.
! Torchwood - So, funny enough, this was actually my first full exposure to Torchwood, never having actually watched the show. And I gotta say, it wasn't a bad first impression. I mean, I only listened to the first three episodes (episode 2 was the best, btw) and I haven't listened to any others, nor have I checked out the show, but I could see myself enjoying this series if I ever decided to sit down and watch it (you know, if I ever make it through the endless stream of original Doctor Who content). -
Finally watched Good Omens. It was good! But yeah, I couldn't escape Tennant being himself. I dont know what it is about him but…
anyway.
Really a shame the radio stuff hasnt gottent he rights to the modern doctors. Their universe building material and companions , but not the doctors themselves. Would be really nice to get them all in on an anniversary project while they still can, given that 4-7 are all in their 70's, 85 in Tom's case.
A little strange though that they're obviously using a new actor for 3, but not bringing in 1 and 2 considering that.
-

Actually, they have done a number of modern Doctor stories, though not nearly to the extent of Classic Who. And only Tennant has actually returned to play the role (the rest are just narratives read by companions).
A little strange though that they're obviously using a new actor for 3, but not bringing in 1 and 2 considering that.
It's especially strange with the 1st Doctor, since they've already done a few stories with David Bradley who's basically the new official 1st Doctor.

I've been excited for Legacy! I hope to listen to a good chunk of it after work.
So, you'll probably be happy to hear that Big Finish does have the rights to the new series (up to Twice Upon a Time), as they've had a few with Tennant and Tate and Piper. They have reached out to Eccleston and Smith but they declined to return for the time being, and have just had other actors narrate stories for Doc 9 and 11 (they call them Chronicles). The first story in the 11th Doctor one has some really good writing. The 9th Doctor one has some… mixed reception. A lot of people are saying it's like Kermit the Frog was narrating it.
...And then we get some odd boxsets like "Tales from New Earth" that no one really asked for, yet there they are.
-
Oh, thats good then.
Well, my point still stands. We need modern doctors to do crossovers with old doctors while they still can.
-
On the subject of Doctor Who audio, I just want to say that Big Finish has had some amazing deals lately. Recently, I was able to get all of the Lost Stories and Eighth Doctor Adventures at 50% off, which, well, is still not exactly cheap, but if you've got the money and are willing to spend, it's a heck of a deal.
Also, for those not aware, Big Finish has a book-of-the-month feature where you can get one audio drama for a really good discount price (though, granted, it's not always Doctor Who)
-
It wouldn't surprise me if Eccleston and Smith do eventually take up the Big Finish offer. It did take YEARS of convincing to get Tom Baker to do it, same with Janet Fielding, who originally was like "ok, I'll do one then kill my character" but now they love it.

Oh, I'm sure Matt Smith will be on it sooner than later, he's just busy.
Eccleston though seems to want nothing to do with the franchise ever again.
And of course they love it. Its voice work. Go in for a couple hours, get an easy paycheck, be surrounded by people that love your work and old castmates, and get positive reception from the fans. Its really a no brainer, especially as they get older.

My point was both Janet Fielding and Tom Baker wanted nothing to do with franchise ever again for a long time too. Especially Janet Fielding. She was super anti-Doctor Who from the time she left the show all the way up until probably when she decided to try Big Finish.
-
Does Big Finish pay well?
Also are they usually usually good or do you need to find a list for the good ones?

No idea but its voice acting. You can go in for a day and get all the rewards of working on a three month project.
Also are they usually usually good or do you need to find a list for the good ones?
Like any long runner, the quality is going to vary. Generally good, not having a special effects budget lets them do whatever they want, so thats a thing.
-

According to the actors, they have said they pay well.
I'd say that the audios vary in quality, but that's also somewhat subject to personal taste. There are lists out there from bloggers that rate what they think are the best ones. I did follow some of those recommendations with success. But there are some that were rated low that I loved and some that were highly rated that I didn't care for.
-
Sorry, no news on the new season or anything, but I just discovered this and thought I would share.
-
Fury from the Deep is the next animation after The Faceless ones:
Also there are now 2 teams doing the animations so they get done faster:
One is Planet 55 (last seen doing the Moonbase animation), and I assume the other is the team that did Macra Terror (Sun & Moon). They will share the reusable assets like the doctor/companion animation rigs

Trailer for the new season!

Looks good! Hope it'll be worth the wait. I've noticed I like the later seasons of new Doctors more than their debut ones.
-

Generally that's because the new actor finds their place in the role, and the writers start writing towards their strengths. I know some of Matt Smith's first season he was still getting scripts that were written for Tennant, the Neil Gaiman one in particular.
-
Trailer for the new season!
Man, I really wanted to get excited for this but I just can't.
The new version of the show just doesn't feel like Doctor Who to me.
I don't know what exactly it is but it feels like a pale imitation. Like when you watch an American version of a British show. The show is the same but the "soul" is different.
Jodi is an OK Doctor. BUT I still don't know what her Doctor was about. All the modern Doctors were defined by some Significant characteristics. Eccleston was trying to escape the horrors of war and genocide, Tennant was highly emotional because it was like the Doctor was externalizing his emotions after he regenerated, Smith was the Doctor as an Old Man trying to maintain his youth and feel alive again after the war, Capaldi was the grumpy old man who had lived long enough and as a result he became Jaded with the universe. Jodi is..Doctor who made her own Sonic Screwdriver?
The thing about this new Doctor is that she doesn't feel like she's connected to the rest of the Doctors in any way. Tennant and Smith rarely ever made covert references to their past regens but they still felt like the same guy, only the face was different.
This new trailer just doesn't seem to have anything interesting in it.
-
Tennant and Smith rarely ever made covert references to their past regens but they still felt like the same guy, only the face was different.
I don't know if I agree with that. I can see how Tennant and Eccelston were the same person because there was this gradual change to Tennant as he found himself that felt like the Doctor was relearning how to be himself again after the trauma he faced. But Smith's doctor was so cartoony that he stands out dramatically different to me.
My critique for Jodi's Doctor is that they are writing her to be as safe as possible so she hasn't developed any flavor of her own. It feels a lot of times she's a weird mash of Smith and Tennant's takes.
-
I think 13th feels like 10th without the inherent sadness. Each doctor has a emotion that is their wheelhouse but 13th hasn't found hers yet. My biggest problem is lack of intensity for now.
I like this trailer it seems properly fun.
-
Jodi feels a LOT like Doctor 5. From the bright clothes and blonde hair to the multiple companions and treating the adventures like a family outing, she's a lot like the old-school Doctor before the weight of everything got them down in NuWho.
You would think that would have been Capaldi after he forgave himself for the War upon learning he didn't REALLY destroy Gallifrey, but I guess his 800 years or whatever on Trenzalore assuming it was his final incarnation really wore him down.
The real issue is she hasn't really been allowed to put any flavor or character in there aside from a handful of jokes about being a man the other week, there's not a lot of energy or quirk there… but I pin that on the writing more than the acting.
Hopefully second season the new showrunners and writers have figured their stuff out.

Season opener was ok. Didn't blow me away but it was a decent watch, and the last five minutes were very interesting.
! Loved seeing the Master show the tissue compressed agent in the matchstick box. Wonder if the aliens he's brought in are the Vardan. Wonder if they'll betray him next ep or break the age-old tradition. And is "everything you know is a lie" something for part 2, or the theme of the season?
