This chapter was so good. Megumi's cooking surprising the judges, Megumi in her delinquent outfit, the giant brush, and a freakin' Stand battle with their respective dishes – absolutely gorgeous chapter.
Food Wars - It's In the Trash

-
Megumi's Stand is obviously a mixture between 「Soft & Wet」 and 「Spice Girl」 - very fitting, I like how even such a simple reference has some more thought put behind it.
-
Since when being naked after tasting a dish is a sign you'll vote for that dish no matter what?
-
A Jojo's reference was expected. What will be the next Jump title to make a cameo?

Gold experience is also somewhat reminiscent, but to me it's more its own design borrowing from the design language that is common among the JoJo stands.
Elements like striped eyes or body patterns are reoccurring things in humanoid stand designs.
I think my most favorite thing about these is how they are themed after the key ingredient. P&H is adorned with scallop shells and soup de poisson has the shrimp shells. -
Since when being naked after tasting a dish is a sign you'll vote for that dish no matter what?
When someone has a shtick where they strip when a dish is good enough and don't when it isn't.
I mean it could just be a red herring and everything that's been done and said up to this point is just a diversion to make the surprise of Megumi's victory that much greater…

Sensaemon and other getting naked after tasting a dish is just foodgasm. In a duel, I prefer a story unpredictable up to the moment of the judgement; the rule "the judge get naked so that dish will win" would be a boring one and wouldn't help the plot, because it would kill the tension of the final judgement. Hopefully the author is not incorporating it, since this chapter ended letting us with expectation and not knowing beforehand who'll be the winner. Predictable judgement would not be the terms of a good story, imo.

Except, you know, the author made a big point over the Gramps being stripped through sheer force with the previous dish. Seeing as he hasn't stripped for megumi, that whole scene would be kinda pointless if Megumi were to win.
-
You know what would be pointless? If the stripping already revealed the result of the match, then this clifhanger is useless.
-
I really wouldn't say that it's useless/pointless, considering there are already people arguing about if it's indicative of the outcome or not.

You mean… like the wast majority of clifhangers in Shonen manga?

I'd love to see the principal blow up the moon with a Kamehameha or something after going SS (which auto strips him) while tasting a dish. A reference to Gintama if parfaits or strawberry milk is mentioned would be nice.
I don't read JJBA but the references were amusing. BTW, do the other judges have a say with who wins? I mean so far, it's only the principal who obviously decides who wins with his brush.

Yes we'll have major players of the cooking world judge the prelims but for the main event we'll just have the director judge alone and the 4 people beside him are just there because they want free food… now that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
So yes I believe that all 5 people are indeed there to judge the dishes. -
Thoughts to how Megumi might win,
-Her dried plum mix that could be added to the ramen might be the deciding factor. Kurokiba's dish just forced all its flavor right at the judges, Megumi's allowed the judges to adjust the flavor to their own liking. Idk if that 'advances ramen culture' like how Soma managed with his dish, but one of the judges noted that adding dried plums fascinates the customer, something that Megumi's dish might have the edge over Kurokiba's. -

Why the sarcasm? Was my question that stupid? What I meant was, how come the other dudes get to taste the dish but we don't see them voice their opinion on whose dish they think is better or should win? Kinda like dude A goes with Megumi, dude B picks Ryou, and so on, like how they did in the prelims. Is the principal deciding for them? I don't see any dialogue that suggests that they've a say in the matter.

Didn't intend to mock you I just wanted to illustrate that coming to the conclusion that the director is judging alone seems really silly to me while coming to the conclusion that all highlighted people at the table that do the tasting are there to judge somehow makes perfect sense to me. Why? Because absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
If we assume that the director judges alone just because we haven't seen the other people hold up little signs with circles and crosses we would be in a situation where their presence is absolutely meaningless and it wouldn't make sense in the context of what we know of that world.
While if we assume the opposite that yes the 5 people that taste the dishes and form a group of uneven number are there to judge it all makes perfect sense.
One assumption creates a case where several new questions need to be(well rather should be) answered(why are these 4 people there? Why are they sitting in the judges seats if they don't do anything? etc etc) while the other does not that's basically my point.

Whew, it took several reads for me to fully understand your point.
First of all, it seems like the "deciding factor" of the matches so far is when the director gets out his brush so I don't think its silly to assume that he's the one doing the judging when the others basically sit and stare without showing obvious/concrete signs of accepting or rejecting his choice. I mean yeah, it's a small matter so I ignored it the first time around because Soma's dish was shown to have a clear edge or whatever against Alice (they all obviously seemed to enjoy Soma's dish more) but I would like to see the judges' offer their own choices for Ryou/Megumi since the stands reference indicates that Megumi can stand her ground, among other things. I would like to see what each of them think who won the match instead of just letting the director whip out his brush and decide the whole thing. Obviously, this is just the second match and we don't even know who will win this thing yet and if the other judges will just silently accept the director's choice this time around but I'm just voicing my concern for now. -

Which makes me question if you really understood my point?Anyway if you were so kind to tell us why then are there 4 other random people sitting in the judge's seats(審査員席 they were called out as such when the crowd pointed to Senzaemon) when they don't do anything like you assume.
What is their role are they really there only for free food? Why is there only one judge when the prelims had several that were introduced as prominent people from the cooking world? Etc etc, again if you can't answer these question it makes your assumption somewhat silly? My main point is it's not smart to make assumption that put the logic of the world built by the author in question, especially when there's a totally logical one that doesn't do that.
But then I know these kind of debates they never end because either I'm always arguing with really daft people or I'm insanely inept at arguing, I'm actually inclined to believe it's the latter one considering that my investment in those arguments and by extension the effort I put in hasn't been particular great lately.
So let me just end this with a page from the manga before I'm arguing until I don't know what I'm arguing about anymore.! Notice how they give their consent to the director? Yes surprise the people sitting in the judges seat are there to judge. Mystery solved.
-
My bad. Yes, I get your point that not shown =/= doesn't exist but that doesn't mean I can't be suspicious/puzzled by this issue no matter how illogical the concern may be. I guess my assumption is rather silly if you want to dissect it with logic and stuff but it appears that way, no? Of course I know that they are called judges and they are there for that reason but I want to see the judges actively contemplating their decisions on screen, like what they are supposed to do in addition to tasting the food instead of rather passively letting the director paint out the group's supposed choice. In the prelims, we saw that each had their own "voice" per se, so they were more active in their judging of the contestants, like with Hayama/Soma. Yes, it was a different system because they allocated points but I would like to hear these judges' conclusions to tasting both dishes and why they chose who they chose to win. It would take up space that people who consider meaningless but I would like to see each judge's individual choice and justification instead of "oh, yeah, the director knows my choice and I'll just wait for the next dish."
In the example you gave, I thought they were just turning their heads towards the director prepping his decision (I guess reacting to the flashiness of it) but it was just my bad interpretation of that scene. It was obvious in the case of Soma/Alice on who would win or have the edge so I didn't pay much mind to that, like I already said. But Megumi/Ryou would need more contemplation by the judges it seems and the dishes themselves don't seem to me like one has a clearcut advantage over the other. Again, it's too early and maybe it'll happen in the next chapter but I don't want every match decided like the Soma/Alice one.
-

When I read the chapter I had the same doubt, but the chapter is better understood if we assume the judges gave their vote off panel and the author just jumped to the moment of the announcement of the winner. In that way pages like this one and this one, in which we see the inner thought of that baldy judge, make better sense.

Conclusion.
! Mad Dog won the match, not surprising at all.

Here's a summary of the spoilers. (gonna be shamed if these turn out fake)
FAKE OBVIOUSLY FAKE SHOULD'VE KNOWN IT WOULD BE FAKE
http://www.manganetabarespoiler.com/shokugeki-no-soma-72-spoiler.html! Could just be me, but both Hayama and the Secretary look pretty sullen in the picture. Wonder why.
! Between the subversion of Soma winning because his dish is a bento even though there where hints at the "heart" being the answer, and Megumi losing even with "the power of friendship" by her side, I wonder if the match with Eizan's lackey vs Takumi will also be subverted and Takumi ends up winning. I really doubt that Takumi will win, but then again I was wrong about the Alice vs Soma match not happening and Megumi losing.
! And Ryou is probably so far my least favorite of the characters in the series. Hopefully the characterization with his actions as Alice's aid makes sense later given his actions now. The stand fight was definitely really cool though. -

! And with this you already know which opponent that leaves for Takumi.

Assuming those are real
! Welp, as I expected last week there goes pretty much a large chunk of investment I would have for the upcoming matches.
Like if Soma vs Ryou happens? That would be an emotional snore fest. The rest of the guys fighting it out is fine and dandy but really none of them have been developed all that much so far that I particular care about who wins, well with the exception of Takumi maybe(I could dig Soma vs Takumi with the prior build up that match would be engaging for me). Like at this point the most interesting thing for me is the whole intrigue surrounding Eizan's role in all this. Let's hope we get some more chapters on the other characters giving them some depth before we proceed with the matches.
! I dearly hope this manga doesn't go stupid and builds up the revenge angle should Soma vs Ryou happen, they had a fair match and Ryou won, nobody's situation got terrible because of that loss so no need for "Soma needs to take revenge!".
! I'm somewhat sure that Hisako wins to have some representation from the B-block participants, because if she loses and we assume that Eizan's plan doesn't fail because his guy loses to Takumi all semi finalist will be from the A-block. -
! Shame. I would like Megumi wins… but ... I hope Soma will take revenge!
-
! I'm happy with Megumi evolution 'till now, so I don't really care about her defeat, but I would have liked Ryou to be a little more flashed out before the match.
Also, Takumi will lose against the lackey and cement his status as the Yamcha of Soma even more. -
! With Darth on this. Pls no ham fisted revenge subplot. Thx
-
! I'm actually quite fine with this. It shows that Megumi still has a room for growth. And let's be honest here, getting into top 8 is an amazing succes in and of itself. It's not like she actually failed or something. She does not have to win, and to be honest, she shouldn't win.
! And I would actually hope for Souma to not get first place in this competition, if I didn't know how unlikely that is to happen. -
Had a strong feeling that would be the case. Previous spoiler posted was fake. Should've waited for someone reliable, like Eru13 from mangahelpers…

Since the matchups don't seem to be set in stone yet, I'm still thinking it'll be the same matchups that were suggested. Hisako vs Hayama and Takumi vs Lackey. Regardless, the true test as to whether the manga author is going to be great or not is if the match not involving the Lackey is interesting, since that will involve two non-main characters yet. If that match can be written in an interesting way then that shows that the writer has enough care for the side characters to be developed in a hopefully interesting way.

! Agreed. I hope she takes the time building them unlike with Ryou who we didn't know a whole lot about we actually know the essential backgrounds of Hisako, Hayama and Takumi. Either a few more scenes with them interacting outside of cooking with other people or another flashback expanding on some stuff is all that's needed(for Hisako her first meeting with Erina, for Hayama how he made it from India into Tootsuki). With Eizan's man being more a tool in this whole thing I actually don't care if that guy gets fleshed out, what is going to be more important is how he will reflect on Eizan himself.
! I've had some issues with the autumn election, things like the cheap Ryou hype up or that we don't have a clear grasp yet on how much influence the election really has now, but it really all comes down to the series staying true to its strength which is its characters.
! As for the matchups yeah Hayama vs Hisako sounds reasonable. I mean from a purely technical perspective matching spices vs medical cooking(which seems to have a herb basis) is kind of interesting given how the field of expertise might overlap with each other to some extent. Also thank god that cloth ripping was fake, it seemed weirdly untypical(nudity is usally used for the comedic effect and that stand fight in deliquent attire ending in one party being stripped doesn't give off that vibe) and to be honest would have probably ruined the coolness from last week for me.

@Purple:He's just a rebel lol. And hey, Nikumi gets away with a bikini, so I guess everyone else just adheres to it to be professional. There's also Alice's assistant and that kid that's associated with the alchemist guy on the elite ten.
It would be kinda boring character design wise if they all had to wear the same uniforms. Attack on Titan does it kinda well but it is hard to tell the characters apart there time to time.
I do feel the bikini is a bit much though…wouldn't it be considered unsanitary/unsafe?As a male who has cooked without a shirt. Yes, it is very unsafe and unconfortable.
@Purple:
Especially considering all the searing and splashing oil that can happen in a kitchen, yep.
But hey I'm not one of the leading authorities in Japan concerning top grade meat, so for all I know that's standard business practiceSome side stuff out of Jump Next, pretty hilarious. It also reveals the reason(well kind of) why Nikumi always cooks scantily clothed despite the dangers people have expressed here.
–------------------------------------------------
Translation for the Jump Next thing.! Narration: Let's have a peek today at everyone's daily activities!
Narration: Souma's loungewear
Megumi: You seem to wear that hanten quite a lot when you're at the dorm.
Souma: Yeah, that's what I wore back at home during the nights, it kind of helps me to relax.
Fumio: Fufu… that takes me back, Jouichirou used to do that as well.
Loitering around in his sleeping attire during the afternoons and getting scolded by Gin for it.
Gin: Jouichirou! Damn it, you have absolutely no self-discipline. You should be more aware of your standing as the second seat...
(Jouichirou:not listening)
Megumi: Heeh...!
Souma: I see... Ah! They should be ready right about now, are you two also eating?
Megumi:.......
Megumi: Somehow he seems to be drifting away from being a high-school student...
Fumio: If he had a cup of sake he'd fit right in with the old crowd.
! Narration: Takumi's casual attire
Megumi?: Takumi's clothes seem to be pretty fashionable.
Souma: Italy kind of has this stylish vibe to it.
Takumi: Hnn... Well, after all we're talking about my beloved homeland here
and as a man it's only natural to take care of your personal appearance.
Takumi: !
Takumi: Yukihira it's already afternoon! How can you walk around so slovenly!
Fine feathers make fine birds how can you call yourself a chef like that?
Souma: Eeeeee-....But this was fine at Yukihira's...
Narration: Like father, like son.
! Narration: Nikumi's troubles
Souma: Oh, Nikumi? Don't we look sharp today!
Nikumi: Yukihira...!
Nikumi: Don't tell, this outfit was Konishi's idea.
Konishi: You too are one of the Don RS and as such it has to be the riders jacket!
So go and don your leather jacket!! there seems to be some kind of obsession here
Nikumi: Something along those lines...
Nikumi: Can't say I'm happy about the pair look...
Souma: But it looks good on you, so it should be alright.
Nikumi: I..it does?
Souma: He? Yeah... it looks fine on you, probably, at least that's what I think.
Nikumi: Then..n I guess I'll be sticking with it.
Souma: ?
Souma: Ah... that reminds me I've always been wondering since
you're always cooking in that swim suit like get-up, doesn't the heat get to you?
Like with the oil splashing around..
Nikumi: What are you on about, it's all fine.
Souma: Is that so?
Nikumi: After all if you're afraid of oil you won't be able to prepare the meat!
Takumi: I think that line of thinking is somewhat flawed...
! Narration: Isshiki-senpai's mystery
Souma: Yaa... that's quite the view... Apron and fundoshi fluttering in the wind.
Takumi: Ehh? The seventh seat Isshiki-san is a fundoshi wearer!?
Megumi: Ah.. yeah. It's something people outside the polar dorm wouldn't know.
Souma: I wonder where he bought that kind of apron.
Megumi: Ah, Isshiki-senpai is back
Souma: Oh you're right.
Souma & Takumi: EEEEEEHHHH!!?
Narration: Already used to it
Megumi: In the blink of an eye, the fundoshi illusion. It's one of the polar dorm's seven mysteries.
Souma: But... that just now...!!
Takumi: Wait, it being an illusion or simply changing clothes fast is not the problem here!?
Narration: It wasn't much!
And another Jump Next side chapter.
http://mangafun.ca/ジャンプnext-jump-next-chapter-02-2014/33057-654.html! It follows Mizuhara during her second year at Tootsuki and shows the origin of her rivalry with Shinomiya.
He beat her once at Italian cuisine during an assignment(she got an A he an A+), starting their rivalry.
If I can find time I'll do translation of that as well. -
http://mangafun.ca/ジャンプnext-jump-nex…33057-654.html
! Narration: My name is Mizuhara Fuyumi, 16 years old and aiming to become a pro at Italien cuisine.
Narration: I'm currently attending a cooking school called the Tootsuki Academy.
Narration: It's been several months since I've advanced to the second year of the high school section.
Mizuhara: …? The basil leafs are slightly withering.
Mizuhara: Is it because I've changed the planter recently? Is it the stress caused by the change in environment.
Ringing
Hinako: Sorry for dropping by unannounced!
Hinako: Mizuhara-senpai~~ we've just been at the morning market if you'd like let's prepare breakfast together.
Donato: Ciao Mizuhara-senpai!
Mizuhara: Morning Inui-san, Donato-kun, come in you two.
Shinomiya: Ou! Coming in, Mizuhara!
Mizuhara: I didn't expect Shinomiya to be joining us...!
Shinomiya: What's up with that greeting, I'm your guest here so show some hospitality.
Hinako: I wonder why she loses her cool when you're around, she's usually so composed.
Shinomiya: To put it simply it must be because she's a sore loser. We became acquainted with each other during our first class assignment as second years, there...
Flashback
Teacher: Mizuhara Fuyumi receives and A!
Guy1: Mizuhara-san is amazing.
Guy2: It seems like from the time when she was in the middle school section up to now she has never lost to anyone when it comes to Italian cuisine.
Teacher: The next student Shinomiya Koujirou, A+!!
Mizuhara: !!?
Shinomiya: Must be miserable to lose at your field of expertise, you have to wonder if someone like that can make it as a chef.
Donato: I wonder if it's because of the things he's saying rather than losing during the class assignment.
Mizuhara: Right now, a cooking match! The time limit is 1 hour.
Shinomiya: Haa, bring it on!
Hinako: Eeeh!? Let us quickly get it done and eat together!!
Donato: It's no use Hinako, if they become like this they won't listen to anything
Narration: That's how I crossed paths with someone I absolutely didn't want to lose against.
Narration: And although I normally get annoyed by just looking at his face...
Narration: His expression when he cooks...
Narration: Basil grows well in sunny places. But if they're exposed to sunrays that are too strong, leaf scorch sets in and they grow weak.
Narration: Summer is near, I'll have to be careful of exposure.I'm terribly sorry about the awful flow.
-
Ha don't worry bout it. Gj
-
! Wait so Nikumi's reasoning is that she isn't afraid of the hot oil so she wears a bikini? Thats…kinda explains it I guess?
! She can still wear an apron though, its not like she'll lose any sex appeal. -

! She can still wear an apron though, its not like she'll lose any sex appeal. The explanation doesn't really make sense don't worry about it, I'm with Takumi on that it's just that I think it's pretty funny that the author addressed it at all.
It's like he is a bit self aware about how super silly Nikumi's dressing choice is but well I leave guessing the reasons of why her design still is like that to others :P.Also scan is out http://www.batoto.net/read/_/247956/shokugeki-no-soma_ch72_by_casanova
Have to say Takumi and Isami are the characters after Souma and Megumi that I care the most about. Not really sure if they actually got more screen time but it sure feels that way.
-
It's a real shame that Megumi didn't make it. And while it's nice that her cooking too caused some reaction with the head, it still would've been great to see her win. Oh well…
I'm looking forward to the next matches. All of the contestants- well, most of them- have a sincere reason why they need to win. Which will make for some great duels I'm sure.

Great chapter.
I'm glad that Kurokiba won while still making Megumi look strong even though she lost.
About this "jewels" generation, it seems like a good plot element introduced to justify that all these 1st year (the ones with a 80+ score in the preliminaries + Erina) graduate even though we were told that one hand will be enough to count them.
This shuffle before the 2nd round kind of convince me that Souma vs Kurokiba won't happen.
I still stand by my initial prediction :- Takumi (W) vs Hisako
- Eizan's guy (W) vs Hayama
- Souma (W) vs Eizan's guy
- Takumi (W) vs Kurokiba
- Souma (W) vs Takumi
I may change my prediction based on his interaction with Souma but I just don't see him beating 2 people before facing Souma. One is enough to hype him.
-
I'm enjoying reading this chapter by chapter then when I binged it. It makes the glaring stereotypical nature of the series less apparent.
Good to see that Megumi sorta beat the other guy but not really. Not we can sit back and watch Soma clean house, and pray he sticks it to Erina the rampant bitch.
-
So Megumi is able to strip the old geezer too…
When reading the panel about Megumi saying she cooked with the intention to win and wants to try new things...it just came to my mind: it will be Megumi herself, not Soma, who will beat Kurokiba in the future.
I'm very intrigued for Eizan's minion. What's with him?
-
I'm kinda glad the author reversed it and having the person who went second lose for once. Feel bad for Megumi but at least it wasn't predictable.

It's like he is a bit self aware about how super silly Nikumi's dressing choice is but well I leave guessing the reasons of why her design still is like that to others :P.Ah makes sense, at least he addressed it XD It keeps her character unique from the rest for sure, though I doubt there is a real 'reason' except he just likes her in a bikini.
-
Shinomiya won and he went first. And while not being a strict 1v1, Alice set the bar for her group from the get go, beating even Eizan's minion. Probably another example floating around somewhere.
-
Hayama went first with his curry and he won
-
Ah, forgot about Shinomiya, but damn thats twice for Megumi o_0 Poor girl
Alice and Hayama's wins in the preliminaries I wouldn't count though just because it was in a group instead of 1v1. Also Hayama had the whole Soma getting more points from a few judges than he did, so I doubt either of them consider it a real win/lose.
-
Meh… her growth already surpasses every other character in the series. She does not need more wins to prove it.

What he says. Other characters need more screentime to finally get some character development. It's good that Megumi takes a seat and let others have a couple pages of starlight. ^^

Soma is going to beat the spice guy, as the spice guy is the Neji/Renji rival type. The antagonist who serves as the main villain of an "arc" but once he gets his ass kicked by the main character turns around and becomes one of their allies and strongest supporters.
Shonen law demands this. I have spoken.
-
I've been thinking about what other homages Soma could do and the only thing that I could think of that would kind of fit would be a Dragonball one regarding the scouters. Have all judges wear glasses and have them break after tasting, over 9000 tastegasm

That damn scene was only "funny" in the english dub. Stop it.
