XII is vastly different, but I think that's why I like it so much. I never cared for random encounters and standard turn-based combat. It's definitely understandable why FF fans would dislike it, but it's a solid game.
SQUARE ENIX - Single Player RPGs are dead?

The PS4 version of FFXIV is coming on April 14.
I want that Fat Chocobo
One of the things that impressed me the most about FF14 was how much it rewarded you just for continuing to play it. There were all kinds of rewards just for adding another month to your subscription. WoW and games like that just expect you to always want to keep going with them, but FF14 makes it feel like Squeenix is actually GRATEFUL for your business. With how many nods they make to the old classic FFs and how open and friendly they are with their player base, it's almost like the team working on FF14 now is a completely different company from the Squeenix that releases most of the rest of their games. If I ever get back into video games, it may just be when 14 gets an expansion.
-
-
It would be quite funny if that only came with a one month subscription.

It probably does, isn't that standard for paid MMOs regardless of which edition you buy?
-
Managed to compress all of the intelligible parts of the plot into one snes-style game. Nice.
-
I'm so excited, the fan translation of Type-0 is nearing completion.
The day I play this game and actually understand what I'm doing is swiftly approaching.

"But we know that Lightning is an extremely popular character, even when compared to other Final Fantasy characters."
Seriously?
-
Makes me glad Bravely Default is a spinoff
How popular is Lightning exactly compared to old protagonists? Serious question, I don't know where she falls on the popularity meter
-
I think many have taken that for the worst possible outcome.
The way I see it nothing unusual.Of course she's going to appear in a new Final Fantasy Dissidia or maybe even Kingdom Hearts game.
That said yeah them repeating that Lightning is so popular always rubs me the wrong way.
Feels like a if we say it often enough it'll come true attitude but heck what do I know maybe there's this bigger fan base of lightning fans I'm not aware of. -
Someone at the Final Fantasy concert I attended this evening was cosplaying Lightning, so I don't know if that's an indicator of anything. There weren't all that many people in cosplay, or indeed, that many people.
OTOH, Final Fantasy XIII got perhaps the most lukewarm reception outside of Final Fantasy III when mentioned.
They're deluding themselves if they're equating Lightning with Cloud or Terra.
-
Don't delude yourselves guys. Deserved or not, Cloud and Sephiroth are the most iconic beloved characters you've got in the franchise. (Red 13 was my favorite in that game, and I liked 4, 6 and 9 way better, but…)
I imagine Tidus and Yuna have to be ahead of Lightning as well, considering how insane popular 10 apparently is.
-

In the west yeah, but I don't think VI or Tina are particularly well received in Japan, or at least nearly as much as they were in the west.
That said I don't know anyone who particularly is waving their arms for Lightning. But again, I don't really know.

My favorite part is where he assumed people didn't like the time limit and gave it bad reviews because of that. No, they gave it bad reviews because the story is a tangled, mangled mess that didn't need to exist with a main character about as lively as a coffin. Not aided by the fact that they decided to retcon all the character development Hope received in 13-2 and instead make him an endless exposition machine that WON'T. SHUT. UP.
It's kind of sad having heard Lightning say 'I'm nobody's slave!' over and over (and over and over) in 13 to see her turned into a soul-less puppet for both the company and her own storyline.

Can't it be both?
-
@Purple:
Can't it be both?
Good point.
I also thought it was funny how the interviewer tactfully said that the reviews had been 'mixed'. For a numbered Final Fantasy game, 66 on Metacritic is pretty horrible.
Now I don't know the inner workings of Squeenix but I'm guessing what the problem is is that each successive Final Fantasy is costing them more and more money to develop, mostly because they're way too obsessive about making everything look perfect. They HAVE to have the latest graphics and have everything all beautiful. Actually that's the reason they've stated for not re-making FF7; because the world of that game is too large to translate well into current-gen graphics. If they tried to make it with the same attention to detail as FF13 it would end up costing them way more money than it would be worth.
So because making a new Final Fantasy is such a money-sink, they have to stretch the assets they DO make as far as possible. Thus 13-2 and 13-3. Sure the worlds may look different, but we're still essentially playing the same engine and system, just with tweaks so people don't notice the recycling.
I'm sure once 15 comes out we'll see a few spinoffs of that as well, because they'll want to use that engine and the world assets as much as possible before throwing their money at the next number.

I also like how the dude was like "Hey well later on people got used to the time limit so we're cool right?" while ignoring that anyone who hated the game already put it down by then.

It is a true statement that they're costing more and more but let's be real here. The main reason why they haven't bothered recreating FFVII is that that's an ace in the hole in case they get desperate. They know they can make money off of remaking it for sure.
If they really wanted to remake everything in super detail, they can and will, but right now the investment isn't necessary. Let's not get too carried away in saying that the world "is just too big to make perfect." It's big, but even then the XIII series isn't the greatest I think in terms of aesthetics by any measure of the stick.
So because making a new Final Fantasy is such a money-sink, they have to stretch the assets they DO make as far as possible. Thus 13-2 and 13-3. Sure the worlds may look different, but we're still essentially playing the same engine and system, just with tweaks so people don't notice the recycling.

The key thing about the FF series as of late that Squenix has been really incredibly strategically fallible about is that they pin their hopes on the graphics in the attempt of recreating Advent Children style action sequences. Looking at any sort of interview for FFXIII/XV (back when it was versus) I believe there was a lot of hubbub about them trying to recreate the same sort of seamless action style as in Advent Children. So all of their investment is mainly in the flair and none of the gameplay.
The looks and the engine itself are very costly, taking many years to develop, to the point that the engine does get outdated very quickly by the time the game and its sequels get released. They gamble a lot on people going in for the looks and the action style as well as the name, and to hedge their risks better they make subsequent sequels. like XIII-2 and LR which capitalize on no engine dev time required.
In the same vein, when XIV 1.0 failed, they desperately needed redevelop it for massive appeal due to the investment they made it into it over a period of years, and it being an MMO they couldn't just release a sequel or even a simple expansion pack to offset it. Just looking at how XV goes, this game's been in development for years under the same principle, and I believe it makes many people very apprehensive due to its incredibly long dev time as well as the new combat system and what sort of dubious investments they're making into it.

Although in the example of 14, at least their attempt to revitalize it actually worked and the end result was absolutely amazing.
Squeenix still has good Final Fantasies in them. Crisis Core and Type-0 were two of the best RPGs for the PSP. I think it'd be best not to place our bets on the next numbered title, but rather on the next side-project, non-main title. -
With 15 changing gears from a PS3 to PS4 game, how much of a delay can be expected from that reworking?
-
Ah, much of last night's concert is

They can't exactly A Realm Reborn every one of the main series games, it's a bit of a flawed business model.
They've got an identity crisis.

Just out of curiosity, can I see you in the crowd?
Most of the themes managed to keep me on the edge of my seat despite that orchestra being composed mostly of string, so overall I'd say it's rather well done. Not my preference, but I won't deny it's good.
and I'd probably support Final Fantasy 13 A Lightning Reborn. Can't be any worse than half-effort mobile ports.

Not in those videos, I was at the far left.
That's also not the full setlist but the others don't seem to have been uploaded yet - the piano solo of Gusterberg was very pretty, for example.

Rebooting it worked, but in the long term it's not exactly a good idea. They desperately needed it salvaged and reworked so that the investment wasn't lost.
Side projects seem to be more like "Hey, well we don't have to make things really cool looking and do the general things we think FF fans like" so they seem to have more creative freedom associated with them, so as of late, yeah, I think the side stuff like Bravely Default or the PSP ones you mentioned really end up of a much higher quality to speak of than the main series.
-
So my new computer just came in last night, and I decided to christen it by getting a PSP emulator and revisiting two of its greatest games. The very first game I played on my new comp was Crisis Core FF7, upscaled and rescaled by the emulator so that it looked just as good in HD on a huge monitor as it did playing it on the PSP… if not better. It's amazing how fast and amazing the game gets when there is 0 load times into and out of battles.
I also got Final Fantasy Type-0. The first time I played this I just didn't know enough Japanese. I kept dying for no reason I could comprehend and I gave up on the very first mission. Now I'm back, armed with slightly better Japanese skills, to take it on for real this time. How freaking amazing are the opening cutscenes in this game? Not only does it dive you right into the action, in a few short scenes it makes you care more about what's going on than most JRPGs do in their entire storyline.
! They shoot a freaking chocobo! To death! What the hell guys your country is going DOWN.

Crystal Tower in Final Fantasy 14. This is only the first 24-man raid in the game and I'm so highly astounded by its quality. In the way that dungeons beforehand left breadcrumbs on how to operate in later dungeons, I imagine Crystal Tower will do the same for raids. Going from these small-scale adventures to something like this is neat. You get to watch all the little green Alliance markers go down the screen to your next challenge as jammin' music pumps you up and tenses you. The downside I noticed is that people feel less accountable for their actions and this place absolutely breeds elitist trashtalkers. Say you're new if you are and save yourself a lot of trouble.
Anyway from the brilliant area design to the memorable boss mechanics, this is a homerun.

watched a friend play the PS4 beta of FFXIV.. nice game..love the classes and the expansive worlds (Beta locks at lvl 20 but there are lvl 50 spots open). i wont be able to play it due to the price, but if I did , I would be the fish wolf conjurer or Warrior

Warrior is a really cool class. What's great is the balance FFXIV has in its content. Although you will get picky jerks now and then, every class has a chance to do very well in endgame content. There's no exclusion like in FFXI where you could level a class to 75 back in the golden era and people would just turn their heads. Leveling a class to 75 in that game used to be absolutely arduous and then to be excluded after that from great content? I'm glad that they learned from that.
So yeah, you could just as easily go Warrior in the hardest of dungeons (except maybe Binding Coil of Bahamut, haven't braved those depths yet) and go head to head with a Paladin tank. Warriors also have a nice DPS edge to them that can really help you tear through damage dealer checks.

Bumping around in FFXHD and it's still clunky and awkward and endearing. It's not the prettiest remaster but it's sufficient. The complete overhaul of the music is pretty jarring.
My favorite part thus far has been the reminder that there's a sports-team in the game called the Luca Goers. …the Goers. Goers.
-
Oh I've been a fan of those guys for years. The fightin' goers!
-
Luca Goers.
More like, Luca Noers.
-
I'd also forgotten Tidus's Goodfellas-on-laudanum narration.
"This was the moment where I thought everything would change. Later on, I realized…it did."
-

Oh great now all I can think of is that line being read by Ray Liotta or Maurice LaMarche.

Kilika and Mi'ihen look absolutely gorgeous on my TV. And the battle theme is starting to grow on me as I play. If only the boss theme didn't kill me every time I hear the remix.
-

Yep, Mi'hen sure is a gorgeous bunch of nothing.
…I hate that stretch. And the new saxophone part in the remastered soundtrack isn't helping.
So, having played it a bit and refreshed my memory, think what drags FFX down from being an all-time great is its inconsistency. I'd argue the world/story are as good as any in Final Fantasy--for once, the main villain is clear throughout, the summoners storyline is novel and good, most of the twists are solid–but there are so many tiny side-plots with uninteresting characters or ideas (The Crusaders, most of the other summoners, etc) that detract from it. Same goes for the soundtrack and environments. For every Besaid/Luca, there's a Thunder Plains/Mi'hen Highroad.
Add in the least charismatic main character in the entire series (I consider Balthier or Ashe the main character of FFXII) and there are enough drains on a mechanically-solid and interesting game to occasionally just make it a drag.
-
Does the remaster have the option for japanese audio? The akward voice acting might not be a thing if so…
regardless, I'm gonna wait. X-2 is the one I want... and I'm sure they'll split them eventually... or offer at a discount.
-
Nah. From what I understand, they're based on the International Version which never had Japanese voice-acting in the first place.
For being as early in the video-game fully-voiced cycle as it was, FFX's not horrible, just–yet again--really damned inconsistent. Auron and (oddly) Wakka, for example, are great. And some bit players, like Rin and (annoying as he is) Oaka are fine. It's just the absolutely terrible stuff that drags down the average (Kid Tidus and the Fayth being my favorites).
After getting a little bored with FFX, poked my head into X-2. Music remix isn't as glaring (though I might not be as familiar) and it looks a good bit better. At this point, mainly powering through FFX to get to X-2, though I enjoy X's bizarre and inconsistent endgame enough to go for the platinum.

From what I've heard the music in X-2 hasn't been remastered. I could be wrong though, since I don't have the new version.
-
Yeah, that was the sense I was getting from the first few tracks. I'm pretty sure everything was supposed to be remastered for the new release, but not sure that translates into actual remixes with X-2.
-

Japanese versions of the game have Japanese audio and Japanese Text but the English text is on the Disk.
Asian copies (which are cheaper than the Japanese one) have Japanese audio AND English text.

"Hmm… I bet it can't possibly be as bad as the summary makes it out to be...
Well, I was right. It's actually worse."
-
So, after all this talk about the new versions on fb… i thought 'fuck u all, i play ths old ffx-2!' .. 5mins in the game and I just want to quit. The graphics are SO BAD on this tv. Everything is pixelish and blurry, I'm having such a hard time actually SEEING what's going on...
Are the new versions rly that much better?
Are there any comparison pics new to old out? Better google that now.. -

On the subject of the FF10 remaster. I am very VERY surprised they did not bring back in the voice actors to re-do the dialogue. It would have been the best time to do it, and I've no doubt it would have moved alot of units. Expensive perhaps, but a damn shame they never did it.
-
They should totally have used the string quartet version of the Seymour Battle theme.
-
I don't know what they were thinking, but including that audio in the end just ruins the entire thing. No, I cannot just ignore it because now it is assumed as cannon. My problem with it is that decides to create another problem in the story and leaves it without resolution. I now want an X-3 to come out of this. Hopefully this sells extremely well.
-
It's so darn hilarious to see the characters' facial expressions not match the dialogue whatsoever. Sound stops but Tidus keeps moving his mouth.
-
I just discovered this horrible audio on my FF X/X-2 remastered version, and then went to the internet. I wish i could forget everything i heard and read about this and this FF X-2.5 novel. Its just so ridiculous i can´t stop laughing when i think about it.
And i can´t believe i was actually able to avoid this information for so long.
So i just came to leave this here, Coming soon for the Ps4 : FF X-3 featuring the headless Hero Tidus.
