Ah, I didn't notice the time was about to run out. Well, that's that for now, then. AlthoughI suppose they could try again, they really didn't get the word out at all. Still, I can't help but feel maybe it's better not to mess with origin type stories without very careful consideration. I don't know if I trust these people to do that.

Ah that seems rather sad, and knowing people alot of them wouldn't pledge again if they did another kickstarter for the exact same thing….which I do hope they can actually do.
Finished The Two Doctors. It was OK, but it wasn't as tightly plotted as Troughton's stories, and the underlying pro vegetarian/people who like fine cuisine are amoral message irked me quite alot.
Also implying people who want to eat cat/dog meat are murdering savages willing to torture and eat other sapient humanoid species.

I watched the last of the 4th Doctor episodes. I was putting it off for a while…I was very sad to say goodbye to Tom Baker, even though it was decades ago. So now on to Peter Davison. He's quite good, but how long do I have to watch Nyssa, Tegan, and Adric, they are nauseating.
-
Don't get too down on Aldric, he gets quite explosive later on.

I can describe a lot of early Peter Davison era as nauseating. I don't remember who but someone pages and pages back put it past: nothing defines the Fifth Doctor as a character. There's no action or personality trait that I link with this guy. He's pretty boring. That and Nyssa, Adric, and especially Tegan (who leaves only to come back at some point) can be quite annoying. Turlough's pretty decent thou.

That was me actually. As well as someone else who responded to me, who I think agreed with it.

Well, it's hard to follow Tom Baker after 7 years. I've only finished the first story arc, so I can't really say. I noticed he does the wearing glasses thing that Tennant and Smith picked up on. I was excited to hear the Cloister Bell for the first time, too. It's fun seeing all these little things that were created in the history of the show that are still around today.
As for the companions, I don't see yet why any of these people are traveling with the Doctor. I don't see the motivation of either end for the relationship. Especially Tegan, she just stumbled aboard, her aunt got killed, she lost her job opportunity, nobody seems to really care.
-

Agreed. Every scene would end up giving loads away about Gallifrey and the pre-Doctor Doctor, and honestly, the less we see of those, the better, because the answers could never be as satisfying as the questions. Plus, it will tie the hands of the current show writers in small but potentially restrictive ways.
Shame because as a show, it might have been very good.

Yeah, I suppose no matter what, any answers they attempt to give about the Doctor and the Master's past are bound to evoke disappointment in some people. I think they could maybe do some short mini-episode features about it without getting too deep, the kind of stuff that creates more questions than answers. After watching the older incarnations of the Master, I'm hoping to see a return to the more calm, cool and rational Master. A guy that might appear more sane and charismatic then the Doctor on the surface. Simm was good in the first story arc, but then he got all weird and turned into a crazy dark jedi.

If only Sir Derek Jacobi got to do more Yana-Mastering, he was awesome.
And yes, I considered that, but it occurred to me that even something as simple as a 5-second shot of the pre-Doctor Doctor walking up some stairs would reveal a huge amount straightaway - the setting, his looks, his way of moving. You don't need to show him learning how to Time Lord to spoil an awful lot about his childhood.
-
There were rumors flying around about Charles Dance being the Master. I would love that to be true, but probably not. The Master's form tends to mirror the Doctor somewhat, so I'd expect if they bring him back, he'll be closer to Capaldi's age.

I'd be ok with that, though. One of the arguments on that project's site was whether Hartnell's doctor really was his first incarnation or not as there's been some muddling there. I'd rather believe that it is, and that it would make sense to have a young doctor look like a young Hartnell. On the other hand, we already saw the Master as a kid…and he didn't look at all like Roger Delgado. But I don't recall if they ever said that was the first Master.
-

I seem to recall hearing that Delgado was actually the thirteenth incarnation of the Master. At least they specifically said he was out of regenerations in The Deadly Assassin, and I'm pretty sure all the different actors we'd seen portraying the Master up to that point were meant to be the same incarnation.
-

Oh true, also he does say he's on his last regeneration on The Keeper of Traken/Logopolis, but for some reason I was thinking he ended up spending regenerations in between the last of Delgado's time and then, with all of those emaciated forms and all, but I think that was an old assumption on my part from long before I started watching the classic stuff that I hadn't updated in my conscious mind.
-
Well, it's hard to follow Tom Baker after 7 years.
Oh I didn't say he was bad because he replaced Tom Baker. Heck, I'm no Tom Baker fan myself. Guy long overstayed his welcome. No, the Fifth is bad because he's bad.

I don't remember them making big commitments to stories either, with Black Orchid being one of the biggest offenses in that case.
-
@Mr.:

I wasn't implying you did, but it's a true statement, he was a tough act to follow, even if you didn't like him, he was defining the Doctor for more seasons than anyone else had, I think everyone was probably a little intimidated on how to present the Doctor in a way that was different, but not too different. I thought Tom Baker was brilliant, personally. I actually cried when he regenerated.
So far I think Peter Davison's portrayal is fine, and he's a good actor, but I feel like the writers are forgetting what made Doctor Who fun, exciting, and endearing. I felt that way through a lot of the previous season. I liked The Warrior's Gate and Logopolis, but the rest of it was meh. Also, like I already said, I despise the music direction, but I blame the 80's for that.
-
I think everyone was probably a little intimidated on how to present the Doctor in a way that was different
Ah.
but not too different.

What's your opinion on the Sixth? Hold on, let me get my riot shield up here. Alright, that's set up. I like the Sixth. He's got more personality than most original doctors put together. Don't care that he's a violent psychopath, and I don't mind the jacket. Heck, I'm a sucker for loud, distinctive clothes like the Sixth's and the Seventh's. -

Different, but still recognizable as the Doctor, you know? I think they played it safe.

I can't say yet, I haven't watched any of his episodes, as I've been mostly watching them in order. I've seen clips, but that's not enough to judge.
-

Sorry, I meant that I don't understand how Five is similar to Four.
-
It's not that he's particularly similar, it just doesn't seem like they were trying to go into a whole new direction. The past 3 all felt like reinventions, 5 feels more like a conglomeration.
I mean, they kind of took vague characteristics…being a younger, friendlier, randomly eccentric type of personality. But like you said, nothing that really stands out as being completely unique, at least so far.
I've always heard the creators of the show say he's a more "vulnerable" doctor. I can see aspects of his personality that David Tennant picks up on. He was his Doctor, after all.

The sixth Doctor was awful in The Twin Dilemma , but he a lot more tolerable further into Colin Baker's run. A lot of fans hate him because he was a self-absorbed prick. A lot of past Doctors had their share of dickish moments, especially early in the William Hartnell years, so I wasn't bothered too much by him. Plus, I love the chemistry between Baker and Nicola Bryant, and all their bickering. If the fifth Doctor was supposed to be written as more of an older brother, then the sixth would be an annoying little brother. As poor as the writing was at the time, I honestly thought he was the most memorable Doctor in the 80's.
-

Oh yeah, the hair….it was a very cartoony episode overall, especially when the Robot goes all King Kong with SJS. I loved Tom Baker's intro, though. I like to imagine all the people that just got done watching Pertwee after a few years going "Who the hell is this clown?"
-

I love the Sixth Doctor. It's just a shame he had the misfortune of being stuck in a bunch of mostly awful episodes.
-
I add my own vote of support for the Sixth Doctor, a character with a big ego can be alot of fun.

I love the Sixth Doctor. It's just a shame he had the misfortune of being stuck in a bunch of mostly awful episodes.
We were denied the return of the Celestial Toymaker or the Ice Warriors, but got a full three episodes on the eeeeevils of eating meat.
There is no justice.
-
It is funny that they made fun of the vegetarian thing in Amy's Choice. ps - Who wants to see the Alpha Centauri return? XD
And there is Patrick Troughton's son in Curse of Paledon again…he also appears in War Games, Enemy of the World, and Midnight.
He doesn't look all that much like his father…unlike Sean Pertwee who uncannily has his dad's face.
-
And there is Patrick Troughton's son in Curse of Paledon again…he also appears in War Games, Enemy of the World, and Midnight.
His grandson is Dudley in the Harry Potter films.
-
Harry Melling? Neat.
-
After all this talk about Peter Davison, I decided to check out another one of his stories. Four to Doomsday is a good and well executed story, and Monarch is a good, if not exactly competent, villain. I did find the rationalisation of why the Doctor thought he still had an actual body, to warrant using the poison, was a bit of an afterthought but overall I did enjoy this.
I am also starting to see where the hostility towards Adric comes from.
But the fact remains I'm still not really seeing any kind of distinct personality from the Fifth and from what I hear that's probably not gonna improve. Oh well.

Four to Doomsday was ok. I think that was my favorite serial in that season so far, though I haven't finished it. Kinda was just….bleh. I thought there were some interesting elements in it that could have made a good story if it was executed better. Also a mixture of some really good acting with really terrible acting. If they had focused more on, say, the insanity of Hindle being a spreading threat rather than a snake monster that inhabited people, but was mostly useless when it did, it might have been less silly. The idea was just a little too ambitious and heady for their budget.
-
Funny. My understanding is that most people think that Four to Doomsday was one of worst 5th Doctor serials. But, truth be told, I didn't really hate it either. It's not great, and it's definitely weird (and those outer space effects, LOL), but it's fairly well-paced and has a fairly interesting premise.
Anyway, Earthshock is probably the best of 5th Doctor's first season, but even that one didn't blow me away like it apparently did a lot of people.
! Perhaps because I knew about the big event at the end of the serial.
It's just a shame you have to get to the end of the 5th Doctor's run to get to his very best serial, without a doubt: The Caves of Androzani. -
I wonder if a lot of the opinions come from memories of having watched them a long time ago. I certainly have not found myself agreeing with lists of best episodes for DW so far, new and old stuff. But I can separate what I thought was enjoyable versus very well written. Some things I know are bad but they're fun anyway.
-
CosmicDebris, your sig is wonderful.
Also, I'm in the "love Sixth" boat. I believe that they originally had him planned to start out as a prick and then slowly develop into a more pleasant guy, which I feel was accomplished part way through his last season. And then stuff happened and he was axed…
His audios make for a nice pastime if you're looking for a 6th Doctor fix.

I loved The Deadly Assassin. Lots of fun stuff about Galifrey, the events that happen there will loosely carry over to The Invasion of Time at the end of the next season where there is more of Gallifrey. Also, The Doctor entered the Matrix. And they all thought that the Wachowski Brothers invented the idea.

I posted about it before, actually. But truth be told, they've dropped a few different names. I wouldn't believe any of them at this point.
-
When does the new season usually come? November or March?
-
They are saying either July or August for this season, that isn't usual.
-
Yeah wasn't it announced quite a while ago that series 8 would begin in August? I remember slightly raging at how long a wait that is. Like, seriously, you just introduced a new Doctor and we have to wait for eight months before we get to actually see him in action?
-
First they said Fall, then they said August, then director Ben Wheatley said possibly July. So who knows…August is probably a safe bet.
-

That's pretty traditional actually.
I think Colin Baker is the only one that actually got a full episode before the season break, and well…
-
Having a break between doctors is normal, but the lapse between episodes has been greater this time. There was the season split, the last episode was May, then there was the 50th and Christmas Episode in Nov/Dec, but that's still significantly more time without Doctor Who.
I guess nothing beats the 16 year hiatus, though.
-
Some new supporting character announced, played by Keeley Hawes . I'd assume just one episode.

I'm three episodes into the Martha Jones era. The Shakespeare episode was a lot more fun than I had expected. I'm only partially into Gridlock but am fascinated by how Tenant can do quietly intense and then full-on Al Pacino. What a guy.

Yeah, it's hard to say anything bad about Tennant. I really enjoyed those episodes.
Also, I finished Earthshock.
! It was ok, though I'd say my biggest complaint is that the Cybermen of this era are way too human and therefore not very threatening. I was a little disappointed that it was them in the first place, at the beginning of the episode, the mystery of what was going on in the cave was a lot more interesting. It was a decent send off for Adric, I almost felt bad about him dying, but more for the Doctor than him. For some reason the musicless credits and the broken badge was more evoking of emotion.
PS -Oh my….JO!!

Watching The Horns of Nimon atm.
Let it be known that as one who could take Colin Baker's outfit without flinching, and could even take the threat of an evil cactus seriously
I spent a minute laughing out loud when I first saw the Nimon.

It wasn't that bad just….the head is way too big for the body ! It looks like a giant demonic Tweetie bird.
If the rest of the body was as big then that wouldn't be a problem....but then the whole thing'd be expensive as hell and you could only have like one.
It's an okayish story, except for the run of the mill warlike planet whose sole intention is conquest for it's own sake, seen so many times in fiction, inlcuding way back in The War Games.
Also the head Warlord Mc Beardson, his acting was really over the top and during the end, I know he's supposed to b around the bend but still XD
