Doctor Who

maybe he gets two
In true Time Lord fashion!
I keep seeing a lot of people saying that he needs a scarf or bowtie, I think people are just too used to seeing scarves and ties so they can't imagine a doctor without one. 5th and 9th doctors did not have any kind of tie or scarf. The only two that wore a bowtie regularly were Troughton and Smith (Smith wore one after he watched Troughton apparently).
-
They could give him a bolo tie.
-
Not sure that would go with his outfit, but then again, Doc Martins aren't what I'd think would go with the rest of his outfit either.
Everyone is suddenly preoccupied with Peter Capaldi wearing his wedding ring, wondering if it's just going to be a random thing that they'll leave in or if they're going to use it in the plot.
Also, crazy quote of the day:
[Colin] Baker joked that he's even willing to go to extraordinary lengths to play the Doctor again.
"First female Doctor? I will have a sex change and do it."<.<
lol

Well, while I really like how the River story more or less ended, it would be nice to see her interacting with one more doctor after Smith… make it easier retroactively with her instant accepting of Tennant if she's got more than one doctor she's interacted with. And it'd be fun to see her reacting to a different face for once.
-
I wouldn't mind seeing River again…it can be done, even though her current timeline has ended, there are still points in between where she traveled further ahead in the Doctor's timeline out of order. And you know she met an older looking doctor at some point. But I feel like she was mostly attached to the 11th, and they did bring her story to a conclusion, so I wouldn't want to see it happen often. I wouldn't mind seeing Jack turn up one more time. I'm sure some people would mind. :P
I've heard rumors of Jenna Coleman dropping out mid-season to star in a play, don't know if it's true. I wouldn't be surprised to see another younger guy and girl type of companion situation again, especially with having an older doctor.
-
So I know that I complain about certain aspects of this series, but I really do think that there's some magic to it.
Today, I walked into the school cafeteria with two of my friends. There's a little section before you get to the actual cafeteria where you grab your food and stuff. Well anyway, we were in there for a few minutes, when I turned back towards where the entrance was, and I saw this:
!
Now I know it's blurry, but I got a few more pictures on another phone, two of which are a lot clearer. And one of the pictures, I took from the entrance, to demonstrate that it's highly unlikely for you to enter the room without noticing the TARDIS, let alone for three people to go without noticing it. To be honest, the only reason I didn't try to get inside was because I was afraid it wouldn't be real, LOL. Better for it to stay mysterious.
-
Haha, that's cool….was it just a facade or could it be opened?
-
Haha, that's cool….was it just a facade or could it be opened?
It could be opened, you can see that the door is on the left side.
-
Was there anything inside?!
I'm guessing…no TARDIS control room.

I said that I didn't open it, LOL. :P
I just didn't want to know.

The romance of the mystery.

Maybe he could have a decorative vegetable like the 6th.
-
He needs a bowler hat.

@RobbyBevard:

Why not a Sonic Screwdriver Cane?

So you are a Time Lord is what you are saying?
That is pretty cool though. I certainly got shivers when I walked past the original police phone box by Earl's Court Station.
As for Capaldi's outfit, I agree it could perhaps do with an extra something but I am not sure what. I don't _think_ a decorative vegetable is the way to go though.
-
I like to think Capaldi is taking Eccleston's approach with the costume, where he doesn't want the costume to be "the performance" and wants "any flamboyancy to come from the acting".
Which I wouldn't mind, but accessories are cool.
-
@Mr.:
Which I wouldn't mind, but accessories are cool.
He's got a wedding ring, does that count?

Stop the press everyone, they're not Dr. Martens, they're Loakes! http://www.thedrum.com/news/2014/01/31/peter-capaldi-s-dr-who-boots-identified-215-loake-loafers
Also, sales for Crombie coats goes through the roof. http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/doctor-who-peter-capaldi-crombie-3098097
Slow news day out there. LOL, this stuff cracks me up, did the doctor's outfits in the early days inspire fashion trends? I'd certainly hope not.
Edit
Out of curiosity, I searched out comments from Matt Smith's costume reveal, since I wasn't a fan at the time to care. Seems like it was far more negative than Capaldi's with an endless cascade of "meh, too ordinary, bland, boring, dumb, dorky, too normal, no defining piece that stands out that you will associate with the character, this will drive away the fan girls, doesn't fit him, bad look for any person", etc. Generally a lot of the same talk that his outfit is "missing something", and also a lot of people having issues with how his pants fit, lol. Exasperation at having to see Matt's ankles (pants rolled up too high). I'm not kidding. But I think most people came to appreciate the outfit as it was.
You know what he really needs though? A monocle!
edit #2
So the latest thing about the scene that was filmed, spoilers!
! Apparently, if this report is correct, the 11th doctor calls Clara from the past in that cell phone conversation. I'm not sure how I feel about that; I guess it depends on how and when it's done. Who even knows when in the series that scene even takes place, it could be anywhere. I'm starting to think I should start avoiding stuff like this. :P It's not like I had to go digging for that, though. -
If the audio turns out to be true for that scene…awesome and yet plothole already?
Here's something else I found:

I really hope to finish the last three episodes of The Ice Warriors today. I've been real busy irl so I haven't had a chance to come back to it in days.
-

What is the plothole?
Here's something else I found:
For anyone who didn't read the comments, this is an independent VFX artist who is trying to get a job by creating that.
-
! How did Eleven know that he'd get another regeneration? He didn't know that till the end
Yeah I know that intro is fan made, but its the best fanmade intro I have ever seen. Fake or otherwise its cool to watch.
-
There are plenty of pretty excellent fan-made intros out there. Honestly, it makes me wish the BBC would actually hire one of these fans. Personally, I'm rather fond of this one.
-

That's already been answered
! He makes the call riiiight before his regeneration scene. When Clara enters the tardis, the phone is off the hook and she puts it back on.

! Ah! I knew he made the call sometime after blowing up the dalek fleet and before Clara enters the TARDIS, but I didn't think about the phone. I just assumed it was the Doctor attempting to reconnect the phone to the main console.
! Dangit I miss Handles. -
Yeah, it's funny that they seem to mess with the opening music more than they need to but don't really seem to want to get too creative with the visuals.
Maybe the doctor needs a new K-9 model.

If only the BBC would take that approach, that was amazing.
Also I applauded at the episode title. Brilliant XD
-
Yes, I want to see Moffatt write an episode called "The Dues ex Machina". I really do.
-
^It could happen. :P
Here is an interview with the guy who is directing the first two episodes of season 8, Ben Wheatley. http://io9.com/doctor-who-director-says-capaldi-brings-back-the-classi-1515244187

DooooooH!!! That's a facepalm for me. Completely forgot that part.

My favorite theme is 8's Big Finish one (not the 2011 version…):
Of the classics, I also really liked the 5th Doctor's.

Finally finished The Ice Warriors. It took me ages to get through it all due to unrelated distractions.
A pretty good story, though the Ice Warriors' hissing gets on your nerves a bit.

Is that your ranking of favorite to least favorite?

Is that your ranking of favorite to least favorite?
Yep, everything I've seen in the Classic series.
-
A lot of people rank Pyramids of Mars very high, and maybe it was just one of those serials I watched at 2am and barely awake but I didn't really find anything extraordinary about it. I did not dislike it, but I feel like I am missing something.

I feel that way about a few of the more popular serials, myself. _Remembrance of the Dale_ks is ranked by a lot of fans as one of the greatest serials of Classic Who, while I thought it was just good. It certainly was one of the highlights of Sylvester McCoy's run as the Doctor, though. Though I will agree that Genesis of the Daleks is one of the best I've seen so far. I also find that I don't hate a lot of the episodes from Classic and New Who as much as most people. Because I remember thinking that Love and Monsters was an okay episode, right until the last 10 minutes or so. Fear Her is definitely awful, though.

Sutekh was cool and memorable, is largely what it boils down to. And the caveat trick to winning in the end was actually pretty clever. The actual episodes themselves… eh, bout par for the course really.

Hahaha…I think I would have enjoyed the story more if I had seen that first.
By any chance, has anyone taken the scene at the end of War Games where the Doctor is commenting on the choices he was being given for new face and replaced the images with actual future doctors? That would be kind of funny.

Love and Monsters was just pure filler that didn't need to be there. I'd rather watch that again than Fear Her too. Or The Idiot Lantern. I really, really hated that episode for some reason.
People are always going to have differences of opinions no matter what, but when a lot of people rank certain episodes as being extremely high or low, there's usually something to that. -

I hear a lot of fans call a Doc Who episode filler here and there, yet I'm only familiar with the term in context of anime/manga, where anime usually has filler to give time for the manga to stay ahead.
Whereas with Doc Who, the TV show is the source material and doesn't really have anything running along with it like manga.
-
Filler as in, like how some restaurant in China was putting shredded newspaper in their wontons?
I don't remember where I was reading it, but apparently after season one they were granted a little extra budget, enough to put in one more episode per season, but not quite enough for a full fledged episode, so they typically had an episode or two that was "Doctor Who Lite" that were just sort of low budget. An episode like that is devoid of any story or character development in the grand scheme of the series.

The old series had alot of those towards the end of William Hartnell's run, and you often had actors written out of an episode or story so they could go on holiday, so a Doctor-less episode is really not that uncommon.

That's because William Hartnell was becoming increasingly ill and couldn't film. It's certainly not very common after that. Having less doctor in it doesn't mean it's going to be bad or fillery, though, the problem is the actual story content. You can easily just strike Love and Monsters from the watch list and you wouldn't miss anything. On the other hand, Blink has very little Doctor in it, but it's a very good episode.

It is more common for the companions though, but yeah they did say he was very ill at the time, which is a shame. He really was great at what he did and he was the first.

Love and Monsters - surprised that episode credits didn't feature [John Smith] for everything.
Heck they could have pulled a Fan Fic off 4chan and it probably would have had a better story and ending than that one. -
No Maam, waht classic episodes would you recommend to someone who hasn't watched any but you think are essential?
-
No Maam, waht classic episodes would you recommend to someone who hasn't watched any but you think are essential?
Personally the ones I'd recommend are:
An Unearthly Child
The Daleks
The Dalek Invasion of Earth
The Time Meddler
The Tenth Planet
Tomb of the Cybermen
The War Games
Spearhead from Space
The Three Doctors
The Ark in Space
Genesis of the DaleksJust to name a few.
-
No Maam, waht classic episodes would you recommend to someone who hasn't watched any but you think are essential?
Well I'm not the biggest expert but I can recommend alot of Hartnell's run.
-
Essential as in just really enjoyable episodes, or essential for plot/character development? I think the former will vary a lot from person to person, but the latter I'd say any serial that involves the introduction and departure of each doctor (where possible) and certain reoccurring characters and villains.
At least the three of us seem to agree on Genesis of the Daleks. I'd also probably put T_he War Games_ and City of Death up towards the top. I think they're all a lot better the more you watch anyway, though. Cherry picking too much could leave you confused. I think the only story in the 4th Doctor's run that I have really disliked was Underworld. Boring blue screen nightmare.
-
Yeah, people always have cherry pick lists that note three or four stories per doctor… but that gets weird when you're dealing with Tom Baker who had 7 years of stories... or when dealing with Colin Baker of Sylvester McCoy, who had very truncated runs on low budget.
Really best bet is to just find a doctor you like then watch a bunch of theirs.
