@Hiroy:
Jojo is a different beast though. Especially considering that I personally think the new animated adaption had a really wonky and cheaply animated attempt at speeding through years worth of source material. Not a huge fan of it tbh.
Regardless of what your problems with its animation may be (and lol, if we're talking animation problems, Kill la Kill has plenty of those too), I don't see what that has to do with story and pacing. It's an unassailable fact that Jojo had two completed stories to animate and it got the job done in one season. Meanwhile Kill la Kill is three quarters of the way done and it's only now getting to the point.
@Wagomu:
But it's still storytelling. The whole point of saying that Kill la Kill is fast-paced is that, instead of needing years to tell its story, it only needs months.
Maybe it did take a while for the plot to be laid out on the table, but that doesn't make it slow-paced. Lots of fast-paced character and world development going on constantly. Even the episodes you might consider 'filler' did tons for exploring the characters and the strange world they live in. The slice of life episodes early on? They gave us a glimpse into the every day life at the academy. The Elite 4 battles? They developed the shit out of each of those characters and showed how deeply their loyalties run. In other stories, these things take whole arcs to explore, if they get explored at all. Story is not just a plot delivery device and if you think that plot is all there is to a story, then you have a shallow appreciation for storytelling.
Oh I agree that story-telling is not just about advancing the plot. There's character and world building to consider as well. Which is a shame we haven't been getting that either.
Ryuku is still as poorly developed ad cliched as a protagonist can be, the rest of the cast is just as poorly developed. Those elite four battles told us what…exactly about the characters? All we learned about them is they're really loyal to Satsuki along with some cliche, thrown in back-stories that did nothing in adding actual depth to the characters. Ironically, the character who is the most three dimensional...is the comic relief Mako (who's actually had an episode exploring her desire to not be poor but how she was willing to sacrifice that for her friendship). What have we learned about the Academy? It's just a backdrop for fights we haven't really explored it's structural hierarchy, daily school routine, school layout, anything about its teachers or students, we don't know anything about it except that it has a fuckload of clubs and Satsuki and her four cronies rule it. They just had a big campaign against all the schools in Japan which would have been a perfect way to explore the geopolitics of this world or the different varieties of these schools but nope, it was just two episodes of forgettable, stereotypes which just served as a backdrop for Ryuku vs Satsuki round 2. Kyoto got fucking destroyed and the show acts like it somehow raised the stakes except we don't really care about Kyoto or the people that live in it because we were never given any emotional investment in it.
I can only ask where is the time going for this show because we're nearing the endgame and I'm no closer to caring about any of the characters than I was in episode one.
@Nekketsu:
I have to join in that notion that there're some stupid folks in this thread. Honestly, some of you here are acting like attention whores. What's your problem, if you don't like the series, that by the way, is solid, entertaining, with great characters and first class build up, then what are you doing here, I ask? Nothing, at this point you're just flamebating, and it's getting annoying.
What's annoying is people throwing insults for doing what we're supposed to do in this thread, discuss it. That includes negative criticism. That includes the implication that we're just nitpicking for attention, like this show is so goddamn flawless that there's absolutely nothing to criticize lol
We don't feel the series does have great characters or first rate buildup, maybe you should stop treating your opinions as facts and try to be more respectful to other opinions?
