And here we go again…
Chapter 734: "Rommel's Whirlwind"
-
And here we go again…
-
at least hancock, bigmom, catherina davon, nami, robin are stronger than, who is it, ah, the damsel in distress
-
People can't stand the fact that a woman might be stronger than male characters.
I think it's more her crybaby attitude coupled with her evasive fighting style.
I don't mind the latter myself, it's certainly a valid fighting style in the type of brawl she was in in Block D.
It's not like people whine about Big Mom, even though she's a woman and stronger than 99.9% of the population.
-
This isn't some feminist point that I was making. She got hit in the helmet and if she didn't have it on, she would have likely been KO'ed. She had that same person attack only twice (?) until everyone but her was taken out, then he conveniently didn't bother to attack anymore but slept. That's a massive plot device. Her CoO and speed obviously played a part in her not getting taken out in those two hits,
Maybe the thickness of the helmet was the reason the helmet was hit. Maybe the attack would've missed her all together if it wasn't for the helmet. Maybe after see'ing Evil cavedish's attack speed she would've been more prepared and they would've been on even footing in terms of speed. There are a lot of unknowns but what I saw when reading it is she dodged the attack all together and her helmet was hit NOT her, her body was well away from the slash attack. And if we're basing some reality on the articles of clothing, LOOK AT HER SHOES, she's wearing metal heels/boots.
at least hancock, bigmom, catherina davon, nami, robin are stronger than, who is it, ah, the damsel in distress
She has shown she can fight but people still can't give her any credit. How is she a damsel when she is pretty much holding her own and going after her goals?
edit: regarding Hancock, I remember people arguing that she didn't stop Kumas physically, they stopped b/c she was the ally and she didn't defeat many of the pacifistas (regarding sentomaru's line). Then people always argue about nami's strength…etc.
-
People can't stand the fact that a woman might be stronger than male characters.
Naww, I doubt thats the reason.
She is bland and too clean-cut for many readers.
You have Barto who is a troll-fanboy beast
You have Cavendish who is an attention attracter, Luffy-hater, and on top of that has a murderous alter egoThen you have Rebecca.. and you have to admit that there isn't much going for her, both personality and design wise, and thats why people dislike her.
What I have a problem with is people trying to take away from her what Oda himself had given to her, a strong resolve and a high speed.
These things are part of her characters and they have been used well to take her to the finals, why would people rage about her winning after this? -
Yo! Hi! Since the beginning of the tournament i've been thinking that Diamante wont fight the winners of the block! I belive that when they all gather together on the arena, the arena will split and they will fall into the toy house or some kind of jail. Donflaming wont have to worry about this, since they all are gonna be turned into toys, so nobody will ever remind them (this is in the perfect mingo's scenario!) That's what i think. Lets see what happens! Sorry about my english for its not my first leanguage! Regards!
-
@NER:
Then you have Rebecca.. and you have to admit that there isn't much going for her, both personality and design wise, and thats why people dislike her.
My problem with this it the fact that this arc isn't over and we've seen so little of her to make that call. Design wise, she is meh BUT Oda's given her enough background to intrigue me.
-
I hope jesus burgess attacks rebecca so much without mercy, that she will be koed the whole arc
-

Intrigue my ass
-
Well i like rebecca so far.
Sure i like Bart/Cavendish much more.
She just needs a power boost, something like devil fruit power boost.
A LOGIA DEVIL FRUIT POWER UP.But meh, she's a keeper!
-
I hope jesus burgess attacks rebecca so much without mercy, that she will be koed the whole arc
Dude she will be so beat that Oda will make a cover story called 'The recuperation of Rebeca'
-
i really cant understand why people considered that standard speed as 'fast'. we've already seen gear 2, soru, kuro's style, which are can considered as real fast, even in god level.
She has shown she can fight but people still can't give her any credit. How is she a damsel when she is pretty much holding her own and going after her goals?

yeah, steping on hakuba's strength is much like she can holding it her own.
but at least hancock can single-handedly broke a pacifista with her own kick.
-
I never actually disliked Rebecca, but apparently I was disappointed with her winning Block D. In my opinion we don't like her winning because only when people actually see somebody fighting for real, and not just dodging, can they consider that person strong and worthy of the victory. I can't say Rebecca is not worthy of her victory, but her victory was thanks to luck mostly. Sure, she dodged really well, and that's praiseworthy, but she was pretty lucky to be far from Cavendish, when he fell asleep. She witnessed people around her getting cut down and was at least ready. I know this is very very picky, but if she was standing right next to Cavendish, would she react just in time? And if she did catch his movement with her eyes, would her body react fast enough?
There are not much strong Women in OP world, that includes Big Mom, Catarina Devon, Hancock. People just feel, that Rebecca's victory was quite easy and mostly depended on luck, just because she is a poor girl, who just wants peace.
If Oda will make her eat the Mera Mera no Mi, thatt would be the most disappointing thing on OP. -

Never underestimate people's stupidity NER.
-
I don't think Rebecca is fast as in "Movement speed fast."
I think her speed is more like Flexibility. She can move her body at great speed. meaning she's a fast dodger. her movement speed might not be very fast.
but her dodging speed is quite fast. i think that's a really good technique in battle =/ -
that 'smart' people must be know if rebecca has no chance against cavendish himself and made her so-called-agility seems like a pussy

Well, isn't it amazing? Oda actually manage to put his readers in the same bench with dressrosa citizen in the arena and share the same feeling …

The difference is that the readers won't start loving her after all this is done.

I would actually hate her if that happened. It wouldn't be consistent with her character, yet people still argued that she could have pulled off some sort of super move that instantly defeated everybody in the ring.
This is actually pretty common, unfortunately. Either a character is a badass or GTFO.
-

Well, i've seen peoples change their opinion about Doflamingo after Punk Hazard
-

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Its sad that people who have read one piece since the start, give no credit to rebecca whatsoever. She is different from any other character that we have had before and has a key role in the arc and who knows maybe in the future.
-
Well, i've seen peoples change their opinion about Doflamingo after Punk Hazard
Yeah, but that's Doflamingo your talking about, Doflamingo before Punk Hazard was the amazing guy who was untouchable during the war but now that we know all this stuff, we like him more or less but with Beca is totally different since it started here and will end here as well.
-

Yep, if a character isn't Zoro then some people just aren't interested.
She should have ran through everyone, slicing and dicing and then put away her sword with a short snap, everyone falls, not understanding the super duper sonic slashing technique that just defeated them.
Even if she would have also sliced and diced her entire established characterization by doing so.
-
She is different from any other character that we have had before and has a key role in the arc
Whats the difference and whats her role?
-
I appriciate OP for pitting characters with various skills against each other and that's why I don't hate Rebecca. It's her style. This has been said so many times. Both in story and here.
Rebecca is hated for the same reason Usopp often is and it's a very shallow and stupid reason. -
You guys watch as she wins the tournment with her fighting style.:ninja:
And I'm not even joking. -
If she is defeated by Diamanté, wouldn't that be undercut by the fact that Sabo/Burgess/Bartolomeo would end up being the one to defeat him, assuming the tournament ends normally?
The bulk of Rebecca's story is her toy father teaching her to fight and her fighting to save her toy father. How would her story progress if she lost right at the beginning? If all her backstory of training and effort amounted to her losing in D Block? Isn't it obvious that her making it to the finals is a positive development for her? Not to mention Diamante killed Rebecca's mom, so that confrontation needs to happen.
@.access:
Truth be told, though, I don't see the reason for Rebecca moving on as well.
And how would it change Rebecca's role if she loses later other than if her defeat fell earlier? […] If she is sticking around, I'm guessing it's because either Oda wants Diamanté and the tournament to still be linked and Rebecca plays a part in taking him out so that can hold weight with respect to the arc and have Diamante's role end at the tournament, or Oda plans to have the story of the tournament shift again so players pertinent to the arc are once again involved.
Gizmo you answer your own question here, but I had already answered this question elsewhere so I'll just paste my response: Rebecca carries the narrative into the final round. Who else can do that? Sabo and Burgess aren't central to this story arc, so the narrative cannot focus on them, and Oda isn't going to handle them (and Diamante!) off-screen. Someone central to this arc's story needs to be present, and the only person left now that Luffy is gone is Rebecca. Case in point, all coverage of Block D revolved around Rebecca. Meanwhile we haven't even seen Sabo's face!
What's the payoff then if Oda builds up the defeat?
@.access:
Out of all the competitors (not only Sabo, Barto and Burgess, but also the other guys in Block D), she is the only one who can't gain anything anymore
Obviously Rebecca can't win the tournament, but now that Luffy is out of the running I don't even believe the tournament needs to continue. In fact, I see no point in it finishing. Rather, I think Oda has set things up so that the destruction of the factory can happen during the finals. Rebecca would then not even have to be defeated, and perhaps neither would Burgess. If it continued, the only person who can win is Sabo– I mean Oda's not going to bring him into the story like this and have his first act be losing something extremely precious to him, right? But I see very little reason to have Sabo take out Burgess and/or Diamante at this point, so like I said I think the tournament will be interrupted.
-
You guys watch as she wins the tounment with her fighting style.:ninja:
And I'm not even joking. At this point I want this to happen just to see people rage and to prove that powerlevels don't mean anything in the series and in the end that it's all about context and skills. She most likely won't, but it'll be awesome to see at least hold her own.
-
I don't know why Rebecca is hated. It's not like she's new nakama - for just a character in the larger story she's okay.
-

Well without Luffy in the tournment someone has to beat Diamante( who I believe was the one that kill rebeca mother).
-

i think some of people hate rebecca because the way she won on block D. people who has read/watch many fiction must be disappointed for this weak plot, because you know, this is freackin' oda you are talking about.

yeah, great to see she can handle the barrier so people can be like 'ah, so rebecca isnt that weak'
-

She was the blood of the evil King Riku though…
It was self-defence, honest.
-
Whats the difference and whats her role?
She is different from any other new character in dressrosa because she bears the hate of the whole kingdom and is forced to fight continuously against her will, and even so she doesn´t lay a finger on her oponents but instead uses their momentum against them plus speed. Oda has focused on her past, she is determined to get the mera mera and probably will. She is a strong willed female character who has to suffer continuous hate from everyone in the country and by the end she will regain everyones respect for her family thanks to the strawhats and thanks to something that she will do to protect everyone in the kingdom even though everyone wants her dead, just wait and you will see

She'll most certainly end the arc as a darling of the people and take her rightful place in Dressrosa.
That's enough though, she doesn't need the Mera Mera, and if she were to get it, that's the end of it as a plot device.
She only wants it in the first place to defeat Doflamingo, and by the end of this arc that need will no longer exist, she wouldn't need it anymore.
So I doubt Oda will waste it on her.
-

The hero of the coliseum is going to become the assassin of a member of the royal family in the eyes of the dresarosians.
The Pariah is going to become someone that fighting for the injustices done to an entire family even if herself doesn't know about it.
The fighting style that is about not hurting his oponents is going to be the fighting style that wins a tournment that revolves around hurting your oponenets.
This is to good not to be made.
What a great way of Diamante going down you have to admit it is great. -
i think some of people hate rebecca because the way she won on block D. people who has read/watch many fiction must be disappointed for this weak plot, because you know, this is freackin' oda you are talking about.
As someone who reads/watches a lot of fiction I thought it was done nicely enough. She hasn't actually won, just survived. I suppose I can see the argument that she's obviously lead by a plot leash further into the story, where she couldn't have gotten otherwise. But there are many ways in which it could have been handled far worse, like if she actually won by using haoshoku or something.
-

But it's not end yet, and i got a feeling there's still more flashback Oda will throw.
Most peoples in here forgot/didn't realize that this battle arena, is not about fighting show or Luffy or other character. Since it's revealed that there is an ex-princess with her most hated status participated in the tournament, then it's all about Rebecca. -

This is what you said and I ask you whats the difference, I'm no talking about this arc because that's pretty clear. Why does she want the Mera 2x? whats that something she will do to protect her kingdom?

The only part I disagree with is Rebecca taking down Diamante. I seriously doubt the final match is going to finish at all.

That might be true for some people, but that literally just happened, and Rebecca has been a pariah for a lot longer than that.
-

I find it kinda humorous that she's hated both in the manga and in real life.
Still don't see why though.

-
Lol it is some pretty nice writing, yeah.

She is the only one that has an emotion investment against him.(Of course she has to discover what realy happened the night were her mother died and I think it will be Diamante himself that will tell her that.)
Sabo, Burgess and Barto only see him as the last barrier to their objective that is getting Ace fruit.
Even if its not a fight for the tournment I believe that Diamante is going to be finished on the colliseum. -

I also think this has the highest possibility of happening. Rebecca would be way outclassed in the finals and I also think it's too early to let either Burgess or Sabo lose. Best outcome would be a disruption.

That guy has been hyped a lot.

Even if its not a fight for the tournment I believe that Diamante is going to be finished on the colliseum.Yeah I'd agree with that.
I just don't think Rebecca will be the one to do it.
Diamante's already seen how she fights and as a major antagonist I doubt he's silly enough to attack her head on and play into her hands.
Diamante's defeat will belong to another character, my personal bet is on Sabo.
-
No dude this tournament wasn't all about Rebeca, this tournament involved more than one factor at the time, this tournament made Luffy gained allies for what we believe will be a great deal for him during the showdown he will have against Kaido,
No, this tournament is a TRAP set by Dofla to lock/seperate Luffy. It's a side quest for Luffy to get Mera2 no mi. (I see that you forgot this)
This tournament is about Rebecca and all her drama.Rebeca is in this tournament because she want to defeat Doflamingo (Which is impossible) and stop Toy Soldier assault but the assault already started and Luffy is at the palace entrance already,
No, nothing says she want to stop Toy Soldier. She want to get the DF to defeat Dofla, it's impossible from the reader perpective, but not from her. Maybe because she never fight Dofla and she believe she still got a chance.
I don't see a good reason for her to be involved in this tournament anymore, what will Oda do make the four monsters duke it out and make them forget about her so they can smash each other and probably something magical happens where they're out of bounce and she wins?
She is the object of humiliation set up by Dofla, symbol of past ruler's evilness. I think you already know why Oda keep her.
-

Oh well, maybe I was to biased to this to happen just so to butthurt the power level dudes.
And with Rebecca fighting style that could happen.
Oh well she just needs to beat Doflamingo and Diamante in their game with her own style and I'll be happy even if she doesn't beat him.
Though there's that odd ball that is named Burgess.:ninja: -

"I take charge and do it before he has to" that will be stopping Toy Soldier from attacking
[hide][/hide]
She is the object of humiliation set up by Dofla, symbol of past ruler's evilness. I think you already know why Oda keep her.
I don't know why Oda kept her in the tournament since as of now nothing will change, the memories returned but that will just bring chaos the citizens won't forget what Riku did and start cheering for her all of a sudden, will they? This is Oda, so If he let her stay he have his reasons
