My only real problem with the episode is the possibilities with this scene:
!
just too dirty. Anyway enjoyable episode, funny filler with Ussop and overall feels like Toei is really trying compared to middle of PH.

Nice episode :)
Zoro is awesome.

nice ep! i had a good time watching this ep even tho it had it's flaws. The animation lacked at a few points but that's all. The padding was nicely done, it's been so long i read the chapter i couldn't even tell the difference
Yeah upon rewatching the end again…..I have to say that was deeply unpleasant.
I was actually waiting for this to get animated, will watch the clip where Monet is fodderized on Youtube.
Just finished the episode, it was good.
I was kinda shocked when Sanji complemented Zoro though. And I'm happy about Monet, even though it was unpleasent.

I honestly don't get why that scene bothered people so much? I thought it was one of the best parts of the Punk Hazard Arc.
I wasn't all that fond of the manga chapter, but the good direction in this episode and some well animated key scenes went a long way in making this a pretty solid episode. Sure, Zoro's actions didn't make sense all the time in this one in taking his sweet time in helping Tashigi after Monet spend almost a minute chewing on her arm and his odd out of the blue reluctance to go all out on Monet, but he's always been enigmatic on top of being an occasional dick so it's really not all that big deal. He delivered in a memorably showy fashion in the end and that's pretty much what we've come to expect.
Speaking of the arm biting/maiming scene, it was pretty graphic for the series and helped by some quality animation. I don't even think any of Hody's bites from Fishman Island lingered that long.
From the looks of this episode, it looks like the first time Zoro defeated a foe through sheer terror. Monet writhing around in hysteria has a certain psychological element that's not all that common in the series. Again, some competent direction helped that scene out.
I thought it was pretty cool how Luffy climbed by punching holes into the wall.
Most people didn't like this chapter (or episode) of the arc, but I enjoyed it. Not that whole mess about Zoro toying around with Monet and the 3-4 week long argument that resulted from it on this forum, but I enjoyed the fight itself and how it was won through terror rather than sheer force like most fights. One of the reasons I also really liked Usopp vs Perona.
@Miss:
Remember when being Tashigi meant something? Yeah, me neither. She needs to just stop. Stop.
Pointless, unfunny filler. Choppy and inconsistent animation. Weak art direction. Bulls in giant jars of formaldehyde.
Fucking god awful episode and I'm glad it's over.
!
the filler was fine, if anything it mainly answered questions left from the manga. why was momo on luffy's back suddenly? where did the Guards get their animal bottoms? etc.
the animation looked fine, nowhere was it choppy or inconsistent. it wasnt spectacular in the filler parts, but Monet's fight looked awesome.
I actually thought the animation looked great in this episode, especially Monet vs. Tashigi. There was speed and a lot of detail put into the swirling snow as well as Monet's constant transformations which are a lot more complicated than they look. Hard for some people to appreciate though because they go by so quickly. Zoro looked fine to me, actually they made him look more smug than scary like he did in the manga, but his evil smirks were great overall.
Haha, you guys have dirty minds regarding the scene where Monet was tearing into Tashigi's shoulder. Though I have to admit, the way she was crying out didn't help either. :ninja: I really liked how they animated this episode though, everything looked great and explained a lot for me that Oda didn't have time to draw in the manga. I actually thought Tashigi looked pretty great too in general in this episode.
I wasn't really around for the drama that occurred when this chapter came out, although I did read about it later and saw similar issues being discussed in various other places too. Personally I don't have a problem with how all these things were handled. I can only imagine how bad things would have gotten if Oda had outright mentioned the word "feminism" but he hasn't and I don't see how this is any different from the way any other shonen or seinen manga series approaches violence toward women.
The thing is that as readers, we know more about Zoro's past than Tashigi does so it's hard for us to understand why she would misinterpret him. Frankly if someone started calling me a "copy-cat woman" just out of the blue I'd be pretty irritated too.
I'm glad we know what's going on with Brooke and Kinemon, glad to know they weren't just neglected. And scenes that include Usopp are always good. :)
That was something that bugged me about the chapter/episode. Tashigi having a flashback about why he didn't finish her. But still taking it that it was because she was a woman. But well Tashigi isn't that smart anyways. Idealistic and easily offended and stuborn, yes.
Overall I liked the use of terror versus haki use.

16 characters of that flashback was in the manga too.

Pretty sure he knows that, since he said Chapter/Episode.
I want anime not to make stupid things up, and to have normal pace.
I know, that's too much to ask.
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence - How do you know Oda doesn't hand the anime crew his drafts of each chapter specifically for them to use in filler. We all know from previous SBS's that he often can't fit in everything he wants into the Manga - its been shown IIRC that he has some respect for those involved in the animation departments from the Voice actors to certain artists/directors.
So why wouldn't he let them do some of the draft material into what you all call "filler" just because other Manga authors have had bad relationships with those who animate their shows doesn't mean Oda does too by default. Also it seems more an more Oda is writting scenes without requiring to set them up.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.
I think we can all agree on that.

I can safely assume that isn't true by watching Hody flashback. And last episode.
If they had official cut-out material for filler, there would be no need to make up contradicting meaningless scenes.

You know how drafts work right?
Oda's been doing this for several years so his drafts are sometimes going to be exactly what goes in a chapter and sometimes multiple pages worth will be cut to stay in page limit.
And lets be honest here directors can make some hideous decisions regardless how much access they have to source material.
Star Trek has been around for decades, has omnipedia's on the subject that would take people ages to fully read through - self professed experts who would give away their knowledge for free just to be involved in a Star Trek event - and still J.J Abrhams managed to make Into Darkness what it was. So yeah there might have been material there or not - or some director made a stupid decision - this is why I accept that some people will judge all filler as non-cannon as is their right - I'll keep my mind open to it however. Sometimes we might get someone making an episode using all their source materials sometimes we wont.

speechless i… i dont know how to react to that.
ummm, yeah even if you didn't like it the majority of us did sooooo, I'd say this is more of a case of guy throws away winning lotto ticket.

i think warp's in denial. yes several sources (including oda himself) state that Ideas that were cut for time end up in the anime all the time…... that being said, why hasnt toei done a single cover story since Coby's their reasoning was "we dont need to" but i feel it's time to start because they are 34 chapters behind the manga...i say we need a 10 week break from canon at the end of this arc, a nice short filler maybe (OP's short fillers are good, so no worries there) to go with this story or something.

Erm. That's exactly what I was saying. I find that particular filler scene awkward and unnecessary, 'cause there already is easier explanation.
It happens in the same episode when they decided to change canon attack, and showed clearly wooden things turn to snow.
Toei filler is as much fanwank, as local theories until proven otherwise, cause they don't care that much, and their decisions mostly serve two purposes -save money, and make pace slower (to save money).
Some filler, like Daddy Masterson, was originally intended to be in the manga but was cut because there wasn't time or space for it.
But there are other filler scenes that contradict the manga. Humans never did anything directly to Hody and his friends, but the anime had a flashback of a human trying to catch them in a net and sell them into slavery.
Very mixed feelings on this episode.
+Usopp filler was decent.
+Kinemon and Brook filler was quite entertaining. Yelling samurai and a dead person trying to get information out of little kids.
+I liked the Luffy/Momo filler. Helped bridge the gap left by the manga.
-Tashigi being who she is. Completely ignoring Zoro's explanation and thinking it's all about gender.
-Zoro taking his sweet time while the others are having a hard time keeping the kids under control.
-Monet acting completely out-of-character stupid and getting fodderized for it.
+Some of those frenzy-style attacks and movements by Monet actually looked quite nice.
-Zoro's attack being…not really animated at all. Hate how the anime tends to jump from "launching attack" to "attack has hit" without showing the dang attack.
+Zoro talking down to Tashigi. Made me smile.
So yeah, probably would have enjoyed this episode more if I didn't have such disdain for the chapter already.
Incredibly how they ruined this scene.
!
The fillier of Usopp, Brook and Kinemon was the highlight of the episode for me.
7/10. I liked this episode. The filler was nice and explained things that were skipped in the manga.
I wanted to see overwhelming power in that move. A nice touch would have been Monet see herself being sliced in two like a premonition before he got to her. Kind of like Luffy had with Mihawk in MF arc. Also Zoro was supposed to end up behind her as he cut through her not in front. It was very disappointing. The move felt too light if that makes sense. It was supposed to feel foreboding and heavy.
Me personally I thought this was a well-done episode compared to, say, the past couple of weeks or so that were pretty meh.
