I was thinking about if Luffy eating the devil's fruit was really an accident or if it was already planned. My theory is that Shanks placed the fruit near Luffy expecting that he eat the fruit. Or eles was the purpose of Shanks to be in the same island as Luffy? Why the mayor said that it was his destiny to be famous as a pirate? Why Shanks showed that evil's face when he heard about Luffy? Why Aokiji knows about Luffy's grandfather?
Luffy eating the Akuma no Mi was really an accident?

Yeah, it was an accident. It was in the treasure chest and everything, Shanks and Lucky Reoux even said so. Plus, Luffy wasn't paying attention to what he was eating if you recall.
-
Yeah, after eating the fruit he had that kinda "wtf" moment once he learned that he cannot swim due to eating the fruit. So I believe this was highly unexpected…don't think too hard hahaha.
-
Well… He couldn't swim even before he ate the fruit :P But he resolved to become a pirate captain even if he was a hammer. And so, the legend begins...
-
It may be possible that Shanks does know Luffy's family connection, for one thing he must have been the one to help recruit Ace, unless of course he travelled to the Grandline all by himself once he found the fire fruit and a decent crew.
-
I still think it was an accident, although the rest of the events wasn't…...
-
Why would he (Shanks) keep something worth so much Belli on the side, in an OPEN treasure box, near Luffy?
I think it was an accident on Luffy's part, but something will relate back to that at some point.

Manga-wise, I think that I like how Oda makes Luffy's DF moment more of just "something that happens" instead of being a vital central scene like these things are during a lot of manga. All we see is Luffy eating some stuff during Shanks encounter with Higuma as if nothing is wrong (heck, in one panel we see Luffy eating the fruit and he never had it prior), and then all of a sudden he's turned to rubber and we find out its a DF. My guess is that he was probably so hungry and paying more attention to Shanks/Higuma's fray that he didn't realize that he was picking up the DF and eating it as his dessert. (of course, it was sort of ironic he hadn't had his swimming lesson yet…)
Heck, prior to Enias Lobby, the only two times we've seen a DF-eating moment were accidental: first with Luffy, then Buggy accidentally ingesting his when he planned to sell it.

While I can understand your point sugesting there is "greater reason" and this point is somewhat acceptable, I don't know how this thread can progress since the only thing that can be said is people arguing that it was an accident against people saying it wasn't since there is only like 2 manga pages to base this discussion but hell, guess this is the point of this board:
I think it was accidental. If Shanks really planned to make luffy stronger (by some "he is destined to become the next pirate king" thought) he could've just trained him. Giving a DF does not make sure Luffy would become the badass he is now, the same if he had not eaten no DF at all makes him a wuss. Luffy is strong mainly because of his willpower than his DF, IMHO.

I think that too. Luffy had no intention into eating something that could make him lose the capability of swiming, 'cause it was one condition to became a pirate, according to Shanks, but it's too strange that Shanks left such a valuable thing liyng around like that. And after that he didn't stayed for too much on the village. And his face when he heard from Mihawk that Luffy had started to became famous was some kind of "that was what I expected".

i think it was whitebeard that gave ace the DF. ace must of been one hell of a fighter if whitebeard recruited him and then gave him the DF. which is why i think ace and luffy must have some connection to whitebeard or perhaps some important person in one piece. i doubt whitebeard would give such a fruit to some rookie, he must of seen something really good in ace. ace could of split as soon as he got such a DF but ace stayed and is 100% loyal to whitebeard.

**People have theorys that there is a soul, a devil, within the fruits. People have also theorized that when a DF user dies the fruit grows somewhere else. And others have theorized Roger was the bearer of the comu comu no mi before Luffy. What if he gave Luffy the fruit in an attempt to bring back "Rogers" spirit? Perhaps as a weapon against the opposers of the kingsdom.
Pure speculation of course.**

well of course, he had seen Luffy's determination against Higuma and knew Luffy ate that fruit to boot. Hell, disregard the fruit completely, Shanks just knew Luffy's attitude in general.
If Shanks had said this before Luffy ate the fruit you'd have more of a point methinks.
-
Imagine if there was a DF next to Luffy and he accidently eats it and explode.
-
The One Piece would be the shortest series ever.

@Octogon:

Would make sense if Shanks crew already knew what kinda powers the fruit gave.
