I don't know why everybody here seems to hate Majestic Prince.
Because it has the humor sense of a 10 year old, and directed like a shitty middle school play.
Anyone with a maturity of I dunno, 13 and above, should not find any of that funny.

Personally, I find more things to like than to hate in Majestic Prince. That's why I'm enjoying this show.

In reality the only thing that I remember that made me really laugh was the Lollipop Girl. It makes me remember the Shitty American 4kids adaptation of One Piece where Sanji had a Lollipop instead of a cigarette.
Now I'm doubting my maturity. Am I a Child or an Adult inside? That is the question. XP
Like Fana I found more things I like right now then I don't like. I was prepared for a lot of people that don't like it, but hear a lot of people hating it, with only 3 episodes, it was kind of strange. I was estimating that Valvrave would be the less liked since it have no consistency, no emotional impact and a lot of total bullshit, like a man that kill an entire army(Is like I'm watching Rambo all over again).
I'll put MJP over Valvrave.
Both are idiotic, but MJP actually realizes how idiotic it is and doesn't take itself seriously, where as Vampire Gundam treats it's bullshit as serious dramatic bussiness with MESSAGES about how you need to stand up for yourself and be a vampie in a robot or some shit.
Well just finished watching the last episode of Gargantia…
!
! …so these kids are strippers right?
I could only wish Morgianna dance was that well animated.
It's annoying because the story itself is interesting and world-building very well done. I like how the whole language barrier is dealt with for example and how the world is contrasted and explored through Red. Episode 4 was wonderful. Gargantia is good along with SnK this season.
Aku no Hana on the other hand is comedy gold, the it's so bad it's good type of thing. Amazing. The best. etc.
I dunno Gargantia so far has felt like a bit of a disappointment to me, and the (mostly) fluid animation has carried the show. It feels like it's trying too hard to push its message across to its viewers and it comes across as condescending because of it. I'm liking the Aku no Hana anime however because when it's good it really does pull off the atmosphere of the manga and when it's bad it is laughably bad that I end up enjoying it. Both are still enjoyable enough though.
! Aku no Hana > Gargantia :ninja:

It's not exactly stripping, they must be some kinda of belly dancers, because they are like 14 or 16, right? This is somehow "normal" on Brazil, not sure about elsewhere.

While I can at least take Gargantia seriously as a story and care for the characters, I can't take Aku no Hana seriously at all. The opening and ending are unintentionally funny, especially the ending. The rotorscope animation looks unique, but ends up making everything look goofy. It's supposed to be creepy and unsettling, but I just crack up at so many things(the old man's mustache was hilarious). It's like how the Titans in SnK can sometimes really ruin the mood only worse.
Each to their own I suppose.

Yeah I get that they were supposed to be like belly dancers. But the festival kinda seemed like your standard Friday night at a brothel. The cheering audience was full of drunk old men, the waitress was dressed in a bikini, and their moves looked like they'd had plenty of experience giving private dances.

It was detailed, that's why it seemed so out of place for the series in general, imo. The previous episode had some fanservice too, but not as extreme, the two most recent episodes are the only ones that had some actual fanservice, I was really happy they managed to avoid it, so this was just wierd. It seems to be moving to more serious story now, though, so hopefully there won't be anymore of it.

Then that's messed up.
Man, we need a generic manga/anime news thread.
Anyways, Knights of Sidonia announced for animation! Woot!
I've only read it on and off in Afternoon pages, but I've always been curious about it, was on my "eventually pick up the books" list.
I love traditional sci-fi space epics, they are so rare nowadays.

I kind of went into KoS expecting it to be another Blame!/Biomega, but it turned out to be quite different in theme and style. On the plus side, Nihei's character art has improved and the MC actually talks! However, despite its setting, it lacks the scale of his previous works and it doesn't really have those epic spreads of mega-structures that he excels at. The plot isn't particularly engaging, but it is definitely a fun read for fans of SF or Nihei.
Anyway, I am glad to hear that it is getting an anime. I'll be checking it out.
Summer is Coming…
Summer is Motherfucking Coming… :ninja:
Since we're nearing the end of the season, I suppose I'll share some of my thoughts on the shows that I've followed.
Suisei no Galgantia: Overall I've enjoyed it so far with it's overall easy-going atmosphere providing a nice contrast to some of the other shows I've been watching. I am finding it a little difficult to get involved in the whole mankind vs. space squid conflict, since they haven't shown themselves to be sentient or anything, but I'm a little behind, so that may change.
Devil Survivor 2: I'll reiterate what I said earlier, I like that it's not a straight, by the book adaptation of the game like Persona 4's anime was. However, as it's gone on and the pace has sped up, it's really started to hurt from lack of time to properly develop its characters and scenarios. I mean, I played the game so I can just plug in my knowledge of it to fill out the anime's vague spots, but that shouldn't be something that a good adaptation calls for. And I really disagree with what happened in episode 11. Like, very much.
Valvrave: Hoo boy. I said that I'd try to at least watch the first half, but damn if it isn't making that difficult to do so. I think I would've had a lot more fun with this if it had turned into Lord of the Flies in space (and with mecha, I guess) instead of what it did, and in a post-Guilty Crown world I have a hard time even enjoying shows like this for their trainwreck value. And then the latest episode had to go off in a very dark, gratuitous, and more than a little tasteless direction, opening one big, slimey can of worms with several more waiting in the wings. Not only do I not trust the writers to be able to handle it in a way that doesn't make me cringe any more than I already have, but it retroactively sucks away any sort of schedenfruede I could've gleaned from what came before.
And the Dyson Sphere still makes my blood boil.
After a few more episodes, I think Gargantia is the best surprise of the season. The last few episodes were great.
As for the 2 Gundam-like anime, my opinion is that Majestic Prince is miles better than Valvrave.
The only reason I kept watching Valvrave was for the animation of the space battles.
Every thing else is bad specifically the characters. It may be the first time I watched an anime without finding a single character that I like.
But after what happened in the latest episode, I don't think I will continue watching it. Tasteless is the right word.
I ended up watching much more than I planned, so since we're posting our thoughts:
Aku no Hana - I ended up looking into this cause of the hilarious rotoscoping. Read some of the manga along with it, which is much cuter. I can't take this series seriously though since these kids are making way too big a deal out of freaking gym shorts. No one would give a shit if that were to happen in an American high school lol. Still worth watching for the hilarious rotoscoping though.
Devil Survivor 2 - Only 3 episodes in and not sure if I should bother getting further in. It feels a tad boring, but I like the character designs enough. No idea what the plot is supposed to even be.
Hataraku Maou-Sama! - One of the best things this season, there's humor all over the place and it actually got me to literally laugh out loud. The McDonald's gimmick just makes it all better. It's like this show is trying to tell hikkis or NEETs something. The action kinda dilutes things though.
Karneval - I wanted to watch this because the characters were super pretty and it looked cute. I ended up getting a what's-going-on plot. Like really, I have no idea what the story even is anymore and it gets boring because of that. The character interactions are still nice and cute though, and the few action sequences are great. Yogi is husbando tier. Will likely read the manga for him. Surprisingly, its OP and ED songs are among the best this season.
Valvrave - Anime of the season, and probably the year since it gets a second season in a few months. It's so bad and the twists are so out there. Hyping and speculating each episode is good stuff, and then making fun of the episode with the internet during and after viewing is even more fun. The latest episode was one of the most hilarious things I've ever watched for so many horrible reasons. There's no way the writers are trying to do a serious show. The OP and ED songs are all really great and catchy too. This is so-bad-it's-good entertainment of the likes in which I haven't seen in a while.
OreImo - Only a few episodes in, and I'm not sure why I'm watching it. I think I'm just viewing to say I've seen stuff like this. It's very boring.
Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan - Most badass OP song ever and all the vids with it are amazing. There's a lot of good music inside the show itself too. Lots of good moments in the series. But it feels like the animation all goes to one or two scenes in each episode and then the rest is mostly stills and stiff stuff. The anime-only viewers are extremely whiney too, so it's great seeing them get spoiled about manga stuff.
Gargantia - This started out really strong, liked all the characters and the setting, the story was going along nicely, the color palette was good. Everything was peachy. Then the past few episodes have just kinda lost me. I don't really care about the stuff that's going on now. Will still watch to completion though. Also I like the ED song very much.
Also watching Majestic Prince, Yamato 2199, and Railgun S, but haven't watched much since they're 2 cours each and I want to catch up with the 1 cour stuff first.
No one mentioned Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san.I'm quite sad.10 minute episodes with a lot of funny stuff.Enjoyable series.(i love the opening)
I watched Red Data Girl and Majestic Prince.Didnt like them.RDG feels stupid.Hey this girl has a powerfull sprit thing that posses her.Lets send her to a school where every single student is a wizard , monk or a exorcist.Nothing can go wrong.I also dont like the mech stuff but i still tried Majestic Prince.Characters are so unfit for war its funny.Every part that doesnt have mechs involved is ok.
Other than those i watched Hataraku Maou-sama , Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru , Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko , Suisei no Gargantia .They are all ok.Funny and different stuff all around. Also is there something similar to a Cat-God statue in real life?
Not gonna watch Shingeki no Kyojin yet.I have to read the manga.Devil survivor 2 looks great , watched the first episode but i would rather play the game.
Majestic Prince is miles better than Valvrave.
Naruto is miles better than Bleach.
(i.e. Hey this pile of shit stinks less than the other pile of manure!)
And Bakemonogatari is miles better than Haruhi Suzumiya. It's simply the best there is.

As I said and you cut in your quote, I was expressing my opinion. I don't care if it's not shared by everyone.

It was just a joke, expressing my distaste for both.
Davy Jones: Watch Valrave Episode 11
…Did...Haruko just propose to Saki....After he raped her last episode?!
What, you didn't hear the shotgun being cocked in the background?
In all seriousness, while the rape was grimdark stupid and that there were plenty of more tasteful ways to get the characters to where they needed to be for whatever sort of master plan Sunrise has…the way the writing dealt with the aftermath, after reading some other people's thoughts on it and rewatching the relevant scenes to pick up on any nuances that I may have missed (yes, I'm using "nuance" in a paragraph devoted to Valvrave, what have I come to?), it wasn't as cringe-inducing as I had feared. They still used the kiddie gloves to an extent, and there was really no reason for it to begin with, but, yeah.
At least there's only one more episode to make it through for the time being. I dearly hope that Module 77 pays for their "summer of youth" hubris.
And to quote Entravity.com…
"Okay, to be perfectly honest, I’m actually really glad that Haruto is taking full responsibility. That’s really fucking awesome of him to be such a responsible person. Yes, it’s fucking awkward for him to propose marriage after raping her, but that just a naive teenager’s way to show that he’s willing to take responsibility, and I think that’s fine. HELL, IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE RIDICULOUSNESS THEN WHY ARE YOU EVEN WATCHING VALVRAVE? He’s not as awesome as ERU ERUFU, but for a “normal” individual, he’s doing all that he can. Those who have been following Valvrave the Liberator with me know that I’m in favor of Shoko. However, I’m not going to disregard everything that happens and not change my mind about who the “best girl” is. Characters change and by the end, I could very well say that the best girl is Saki depending on how she performs relative to the other female protagonists. Sure, I make fun of Saki and say that she’s useless, but that’s the fucking truth. I mean seriously, she was completely useless after episode 6 by getting stuck, falling into traps and so on until episode 10. When credit is due, I’ll give it. It’s not like when Shoko started SINGING JINGLE BELLS RANDOMLY I just accepted it. I cringed so hard in episode 5 because of that scene. Jesus.
From this episode and Saki’s more genuine approach to the relationship between Haruto and her, I can say that I definitely like her more. Hell, I mean she got raped and she still likes him that much. Jesus, that’s just awkward to type. Am I disappointed/angry that Shoko didn’t “win?” Uhh… in this situation? I don’t even think there’s a better way to go about it. I would be absolutely livid if Haruto just FUCKING DITCHES SAKI and leaves her to rot after he did something like that to her. I wouldn’t even be able to accept the relationship between Shoko and Haruto if that were to be the case. So I’m thankful that he’s doing what he has to do.
Howwwwwever, that leaves Shoko in a terrible situation. Not only has Haruto gone and killed her father, but now he’s with another woman. I don’t even know if she’s in the mood to confess anymore, but if she does before Haruto tells everyone about Saki… Holy SHIT THE DRAMA. Just imagine if she thinks that Haruto will help her after she lost her father only for her to find out that… OH THE PAIN. If Haruto tells Shoko about the rape, then maybe she’ll understand, but even then, she’ll be put even deeper into despair. Though, it’s still possible that by the end of everything, this anime will take another turn relationship-wise. Sunrise could just be fooling us yet again…"
I don't know what the hell this show is about but anyone suggesting that it's okay to rape someone so long as you take responsibility by marrying them is bringing up some Old Testament Leviticus bullshit and deserves to be smacked upside the head for it.
Why are you guys even watching that shit? I had to vomit after 2 episodes and immediately dropped it.
Masochism/I don't like dropping things (exception made for Sword Art Online because incest pandering is an utter dealbreaker for me).
Masochism/I don't like dropping things (exception made for Sword Art Online because incest pandering is an utter dealbreaker for me).
I don't understand why people are so disturbed by the incest in SAO(Yes it was really stupid and unnecessary. Looked like a hentai story :P), but don't feel that about human trafficing, Azuna was treated as a good the entirety of the second half (Even her father give her to the villain).
I was thinking of marathon Valvravre, or at least try to(the first episodes were so horrible bad, that it was funny). Is this a bad idea?
Unlike the people that that stuff is aimed at, I actually have a younger sister, so I take special exception to it.
Unlike the people that that stuff is aimed at, I actually have a younger sister, so I take special exception to it.
Hmm, i thought it is specifically aimed at people with younger sisters and a sister complex?!
I always understood the sister complex as being born from the idea of wacky lonely guys wanting a close female who one can comfortably be around and there's an implied degree of power over them if they're a younger sister, or respect and authority. Or the hope that she'd just be affectionate unconditionally because family (lol that sounds sad). I guess the unconditional intimacy is where it hinges?
So basically
People who have never had actual sisters or if they do their siscon is just hilariously divorced from it in grand awkwardness. I could never imagine siscon actually born from some sort of realistic experience
and then tsundere sisters is just when u get so anime it all collides and your life is basically boned at that point
Unlike the people that that stuff is aimed at, I actually have a younger sister, so I take special exception to it.
Hey Crossword,
I didn’t expect you to be a siscon!
Oh ha ha ha.
Hmm, i thought it is specifically aimed at people with younger sisters and a sister complex?!
I think the straightest cure for a sibling complex would be to actually have a sibling.
Unlike the people that that stuff is aimed at, I actually have a younger sister, so I take special exception to it.
So do I, but I still like SAO. Yes, I don't agree with incest and they pushed the envelop a bit, but there are worse out there. But that's just me I guess.
Oh ha ha ha.
I think the straightest cure for a sibling complex would be to actually have a sibling.
Yep. I don't have a sister, but I have two brothers and a ton of female cousins. People that don't know how a sibling relationship is are the only ones that thing something like having kind of love/intimate relationship possible. In reality it simply feels wrong. Is hard to explain, but any kind of attraction(if ever existed) just instantly fade away.
I was thinking and is possible for a person to have siblings and still have sibling complex. Normally Fetishes are something seen as wrong, prohibited and/or impossible. So he/she more than a siblingless person will understand how wrong and impossible such a thing is.
My Little Cersei Can't Be This Cute!~ <3
So the season is pretty much over so what did everyone enjoy?
Personally I had fun with Yahari blahblah love snafu which ended up being pretty good for a LN series adaptation and because of it now I will try not to dismiss all LN series as terrible.
Red data girl had a slow start but then built up into something that was quite enjoyable and actually made me look forward to it every week. The ending was a bit tame but overall that was a fun show.
Majestic Prince has been fun as well despite it's weird character designs and some god awful characters.
Namely this abomination:
! WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE!?!?!?
But I do like some of the characters and the CG mech battles look really nice and are probably the best part of the show.
Gargantia ended up as a bit of a disappointment. The first couple of episodes had an interesting premise but then it teetered about with some beach episodes with T & A here, then there was the whole morality issue with 'we don't kill people', then some ship drama with characters I didn't care about, then Hideauze drama then Kugel with a cult from no where. It felt like there were a lot of writers for this show but they never all sat down together and discussed what they actually wanted the show to be, so it ended up being a lot of meh ideas squished together and coated in pretty animation.
I watched the first 3 episodes of Devil survivor 2 and liked it so I bought the game and dropped the anime series. I guess the anime did its job.
I still need to marathon the rest of Aku no hana but those are all the shows that I kept up with all the way to the end. There are some other shows, like Maou sama, which I hear are entertaining so I might watch those but beyond that this season was okay. Better than Winter 2013 but still nothing special, looking forward to Summer 2013 though.
^ Oh yeah SNAFU, its a good show, but what makes it amazing is Hachiman. I can relate to him in many situations from my high school days its not even funny. He's one of the best MCs i've seen this season. I'm still a bit sadden to hear about sales for SNAFU though, it looks like we might not even get a second season (that and brain base rarely makes sequels, look at DRRR one of their most popular shows and still no S2.) At least there's the OVA and the LN summaries that appear on /a/. So glad I found this show though its way better than oreimo.
Welp, my final thoughts on the three shows I watched:
Suisei no Gargantia
Out of the three shows I watched, this was probably the best from an objective standpoint. I had some issues with it, mainly that it could've been a little more tightly paced and plotted and some of the side characters, Amy and her friends in particular, felt a little underdeveloped and extraneous, but I did appreciate its general laid-back nature as it provided a clear contrast with the other two shows and I did like it's treatment of AIs. Never did they go the route of "sentient computer goes evil because dumb humans", but all of their actions were justified by their programming. Between this and Psycho Pass, Gen Urobuchi seems to be trying to throw off his moniker, or at least temporarily subvert it.
Devil Survivor 2
This show had the right idea in not following the game by rote, and it did a lot of right things like nailing the atmosphere of the Devil Survivor setting, but ultimately the lack of time to fully expound on the source material and the weak script did in what they were going for. The narrative just kind of imploded once the Benetnasch fight rolled around, and deaths felt less like means for moving the plot and more like the writers realizing that they didn't have enough room for everyone or didn't know what to do with all the characters, and just took advantage of the "anyone can die" nature of the games to dispose of them. That said, the battles were generally cool and it was great seeing so many demons from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise get animated. If it encouraged anyone to go out and buy the game, I guess it did its job, and I hope they enjoy it, because I loved the game. If the first game is getting its own anime in the near future like I've heard rumors of, I do hope it has at least a new scriptwriter.
Valvrave
Well, what can I say about this show that hasn't been said already? Over the past three months or so it's provided more than its fair share of mecha action, rampant displays of wallbanging stupidity on the part of its characters, a critical mass of anime cliches and tropes, twists that do their best to out-twist each other, and gone into subject matter that it had absolutely no business dealing with. And yet, I will no doubt be following it again come fall because, well, I have no clue where the heck this story is going. I originally thought that the first season would end similarly to the first half of Gundam 00 in order to set up the future seen in the flashforwards, but that's clearly not the case. I can't even begin to guess what Sunrise's master plan is, and I guess that's as good a reason as any to continue with it, despite or because of my many misgivings.
Crossword's Random Trivia of the Season: Devil Survivor 2 and Valvrave can stand shoulder-to-shoulder as users of clumsy coffee metaphors.
To sum up spring 2013 anime season: Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) > Everything else
Quite a good season for me.
I would rank the anime I watched like this : Suisei no Gargantia & Shingeki no Kyojin > Hataraku Maou-sama & Majestic Prince >> Arata Kangatari >>> Valvrave
Production I.G. is my favorite studio right now : great adaptations (Kuroko's Basket last year and Shingeki this year) and great original anime (Psycho Pass last fall and Suisei no Gargantia this season).
So I ended up marathoning Yahari Romantic Comedy Whatever the other day and I gotta say, that was anime of the season. I normally hate stuff like that, but Hachiman proved to be the best main character I've seen so far this year. Lots of hilarity throughout, and lots of great moments and pwnage.
