I watched the 4Kids dub as a kid and didn't care for it too much, DBZ was more my jam. Then I got the first manga volume on a whim at around 10 years old and really enjoyed it but obviously didn't have the money to keep going really, so when I was about 14 I was looking for something to get into that would make me happy. I wasn't the happiest kid growing up but One Piece really captured me and I've been reading ever since. I'm 19 now and I'm even bigger of a fan now than I was before. I'm now doing my first reread and I'm falling in love all over again.
tl;dr: Started seriously reading at 14, I'm 19 now

Just recently turned 25.
I can't remember the age exactly when starting One piece. Probably around 15 or 16 when the 4 kids anime came out. Then around 18 or 19 I powered through the Manga. Then at 20 I started reading the series weekly which was near the timeskip. SO to be safe, I'll say I started at 20, as that's when I started really getting into the series by keeping up to date.

You know what I find funny? That there are people out their (like me) that thinks that One Piece is childish and immature that they even think it's foe babies. If you go to some fourm like GameFaq, and your over 20 or older, just imagine people saying things like "your a disappointment in person""I called it eleven years old up your ass" "your an idiot liking a series like that" "One Piece is like Spongebob with drama" or "One Piece compared to Digimon, it's for 10 years old" despite the adult content and darkness in the series and people will mock you for liking it

I noticed that almost everyone started from the anime (and propably just started reading the manga because the story is ahead of the anime). Do you really think the anime is worth it? Like I said in my post in this thread, I've been reading One Piece for 12 years now, but I never watched the anime (apart from a few episodes that annoyed me to hell and made me never want to watch it ever again). I mean, the quality of the animation is really bad (I guess that applies to most animes). To me it looks like a sequence of animated repetitive gifs. And sometimes there isn't animation at all… like, if someone's throwing a punch, we just see the hand already connected to the foe's face and just the background is moving with those parallel lines that describe movement. That works well in the manga, but since the anime is an animation, they should f**ing animate it! Not to mention the art quality. Sometimes the character's faces look like a 5 year old drew them.
Woah, I'm sorry that was way off-topic (is there a topic discussing this manga x anime issue?)

Good voice acting and solid soundtrack. The animation gets better. Worth it imo

Were you reading the Japanese manga raw??
No no, I'm italian. That's when they published One Piece in my country. I was already into manga and I found the first volume One Piece in a comic book store. Since then i followed the publication schedule until they changed the serialization period, then i started reading scans.
