Wow. just wow.
The following contains spoilers to the movie.
I liked how Oda played all his cards correctly, you got the usual jokes (Both me and my sister LOLd at the "I bet you are happy now that everything is at its right place" Ussopp joke to Robin and the moment where Brook returns to be 90 years old) and fan-service both for the guys (Chibi-nami for the lolicons I guess and dancer 18 year old Robin) and for the girls (the bath scene, Luffy's butt, my sister was like wow they look so cool in the Armani outfits, etc)
So I think in the One Piece "spirit" department (Spirit like jokes, puns, fan-service, etc.. what you expect in One Piece) it was all very good.
Now, about the animation, I cant comment since I just am not that good at noticing differences in quality animation, and since I saw the stream it wasn't that HQ but it was very enjoyable..
As for the plot, I liked how Oda didn't overexplain Z's past, like that kind of tragic past is SO overplayed, if you want to see a goodie-goodie turn to bad villian there are a bazillion of films/comics/series that have that kind of transformation, this film ain't one of them, no sir. You get the explanation via an extremelly quick line, IIRC said by Sengoku or Garp basically saying "He got his family killed by some random pirate, he grieved but he understood that's part of his job" with some background images.
He was a hero on a duty, he believed in true justice, he continued in the marines even after that tragedy.. And then some pirate killed yet against precious people to him.. He still continued but then the Marines made that pirate a Shichibukai and that was the drop that spiled the cup..
You get all that explained in like less than 5 minutes, I mean I really congrat Oda for not over-explaining this one, he could have made us cry like little babys, that's likely but he choose not to, I mean
At the last battle when Luffy said "I am gonna be king of pirates!" and Z justs shouts "My name is Zetoooo!" I was like .. the heck? That is soooo lame of a response!
But then.. you see some flashbacks, very quick flashbacks of a kid with some.. doodle.. and you are like ok here comes the sad long-ass flashback, and YOU ARE WRONG! Because there is no long-ass flashback that makes you cry like a baby, nooO!
But at the very last couple of seconds you literally get everything explained to you..
Z's flashback while being very quick (Probably less than a minute) is very concrete and explains everything.
Zephir was a tokusatsu like hero (hence the Zetto name, it sounds pretty cool after all) so every time he said a dumb line like "My name is ZETTOO!!" he was just imitating his tokusatsu heroes, he WAS the good guy, the Luffy we all know and love while good was the avatar of evil, because admit it the mayority of pirates are evil (not that Government are saints.. )
Its incredible how much better you understand Z right at the movie's very ending. That quick flashback its just beautiful, I don't know if I am the only one here but I got a very Earthbound-like feeling in that flashback, it remind me of Masked man in Mother 3 for some reason…
Anyway I have a couple of questions.
Was it ever answered who cut Z's arm?
Also, why is Garp with Coby, didn't he resign or something?
This isn't really a question, but I mean.. The reason Z "lost" to Luffy was because he had run out of energy (He is old) wouldn't it have been logical for Ain to turn him into a 20-something? -.-
EDIT:
Also, I would like to mention other intersting thing I almost forgot.. It was interesting how it wasn't really Luffy which saved anyone, like yeah Ok he wins the fight, but then? I mean the Dyna things were going to explode anyway, and the way they were stopped definetly wasn't an ass-pull, like even if Luffy had lost Aokiji was there to save the day.
