I don't get the hate against tournament arcs. Yes, they have their fair share of pitfalls and they're tougher to write than the standard arcs but if done right, they can be hella entertaining. Naruto's Chunin exam, Kenichi's DofD, Negima's school festival tournment, some of the best arcs I've ever read in any shonen series. Just because Hiro Mashima fucks em up, doesn't mean they're all bad.

I don't get tournament hate either. Like any structure it can be good, or it can be bad. But if it's Oda, you know there's a pretty good chance it'll be at least a little bit interesting and entertaining. So far i would say it's off to a great start.

Also, with so much stuff going on, i'm not sure this is even really a 'tournament arc' anymore.

Shaman King's problem wasn't that it had a tournament.

It's that it had a tournament that became the entire series for hundreds of chapters. (I think it started its tournament around chapter 40 and that lasted through to the end, around chapter 300? )

It had a myriad of other problems too, but.

There's only a handful of series that regularly get called out for being bad, and rightly so.

Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, Shaman King, all deserve what they get. But tons of other series have threads of nothing but praise. Hell, Shamn King doesn't even get mentioned except offhand. Hunter x Hunter gets shit for it's hiatuses and scribble art, but praise for the actual series. Negima gets slammed for its ending, but praise for the rest of it.

Ass Class, billy Bat, Magi, Sket Dance, Shokugeki no Soma, Kenichi, World Trigger, Meaka Box, The Breaker, One Punch Man, Jojo, Cross Manage, Toriko, Ghibli... all on the first page of the manga thread and all get talked about positively.

My bet is the tournament is going to follow something like Negima's format. Lots of great fights and character building moments while at the same time, the events that occur will build up the new characters and set up their role in the future of the arc as well as a lot of behind the scenes stuff as well as cutting to other locations so it doesn't feel stale and the pacing is nice and brisk. The tournament itself will be small compared to the rest of the arc but fundamental in the entire story of it.

I don't even disagree and as I said I don't mind the occassinal bash. Hell, I'd probably do it a few times if I was one type to watch a lot of other things besides One Piece as well. But especially because of that, I as some guy who's never seen Toriko, who hasn't followed Naruto for a long time, and who really enjoyed seeing the first 50 episodes of Fairy Tail (couldnt watch any further after that. not because i didnt want to, though), or who hasnt watched Dragon Ball in ages. I get really annoyed when I see a lot of talk about other animes or mangas being crap, since I don't get half of the stuff thats being said because I didnt watch it, or because I am one of those people that did like what he's seen from something. And again, I'm not saying I would like you all bashing on stuff if I had been the type to watch a lot more stuff.
But lately with the tournament arc coming into view it's just getting ridiculous IMO, and I come here to discuss and speculate about one piece. not how godly it is compared to other crap thats out there, because we all know that already.

Yeah well, seriously speaking One Piece doesn't exist in a vacuum. When comparisons to similar things in other mediums and stories are there, and they always are, then there's no reason for them not to be brought up.
If you can't contribute too bad.
It would be like complaining on a Metallica forum when people bring up Black Sabbath or something. Sorry, it's legit and going to happened.

Agreed. I think if they'd stuck to the actual tournament, things would have been better. Instead we got an endless string of random battles outside of the ring that half the time didn't even matter. And when a fight actually did get good, the next chapter they were suddenly having coffee or sitting in hot springs. Basically after they landed in America, the only good part was the Mt. Osore flashback.

I don't get how anyone could dislike the Chuunin Exams of Naruto. It was a very solid component of the story and had some great fights (Shikamaru vs. Kin, Hinata vs. Neji, Gaara vs. Lee, Naruto vs. Neji, Shikamaru vs. Temari, Naruto vs. Gaara, and Hiruzen vs. Orochimaru were all exemplary if you ask me).

As for hating on other series, you kind of have to expect that if you're on forums. Anything except One Piece and Dragonball will get flamed by various members to a degree far greater than they deserve. Just be thick-skinned and try to ignore the people saying your favorite shows suck.

Also, Yu-Yu Hakusho's best arc (by faaaar) is the Chapter Black saga, which was right after the Dark Tournament (which was pretty good in itself).

I second this since YYH is one of my most favorite anime/manga series of all time (next to DB and Tenchi Muyo) and the Dark Tournament arc is where the series became truly exciting for me and 2 of my younger brothers.

So yeah, that "tournament arcs always make a great series less enjoyable" argument is bullshit. -_-

Naruto was trained to consciously access the foxes power by Jiraiya before the Third Part of the exam, and when Neji closed his points that's exactly what Naruto does.
