Looking at the sword slicing mechanics now, it kinda reminds me of Vanquish where you slow down time a bit and start shooting or whatever you want during the time. Also, the bosses look awesome! So that drastically increases my chances of purchase!
One thing have always been awesome about MGS, the villains. I even liked B&B Corps, even though no one else seemed to do so.
Zavvi announced a special limited edition for the UK. Comes with a Play-Arts Kai of White Raiden. First Tomb Raider did it and gave a Play-Arts Kai of Lara Croft, now it looks like they're doing it in this one too. £100 seems a bit steep tho (especially considering the Tomb Raider one was £80 and comes with a ton more extras)

Don't know if this has been shown before, but you can use cardboard boxes in this game, which is a nice touch. Also, the battle with Metal Gear Ray isn't as one-sided as the original trailer made it seem, which is good. (sure, Raiden still throws it into the air and chops its arm to pieces, but it keeps going afterwards, and Raiden struggles to lift it, which I don't recall him doing originally) Between this and the Gray Fox costume that was announced (as a pre-order bonus for Gamestop, but Europe apparently has it on-disc, so my guess is that it will be unlocked in-game later on or it will be DLC), my opinion of this game's improving with every trailer.
Got an e-mail from Amazon.de about this:

You get it free if you preorder it together with the game. It comes with the DLC "Raiden's Inferno Armor". Since you can order them seperately, I assume you can get it without buying the game there, but I'm not entirely sure. I'm not sure if this will spread to the rest of Amazon, but I'd assume so.
So the demo's up on the Japanese PSN… UH UH, hold up, let me finish. Only Japanese PS3s can play it. I've never heard of a region locked PSN demo... but I guess they gotta sell Zone of the Enders HD copies overseas somehow.
In case no one was fortunate enough to play the japanese demo a month everyone else can play it now.
Yeah, played it. Seems pretty smooth, but I don't like how the right analog stick handles both free slicing rotation AND the actual act of performing the slice. It would have been better to have R1 (as L1 enters free slicing) be pressed to perform the slice, like shooting.
I didn't try any of the other controller presets so maybe there is something like that?

I don't think there is, personally I'm a bit put off by the fact there isn't a block or dodge button. Parrying just doesn't seem like it works, stealth is awkward and Raiden can't double jump (at least in the demo) or grab on to ledges after a jump.

I agree on all counts. I appreciate that they tried to make things more challenging by removing dodging and making parry your only method of blocking, I just hate how you perform parrying. It took me having to go online to figure out how to do it, you gotta move the analog stick in the direction of your enemy and press square at the exact same time. It is really clunky. They could have made it a single button press with R1 but wanted to be fancy I guess. Also for a series based on stealth how they made it in this is clearly a second thought. There's no crouch, your only method is to VERY SLOWLY walk with the most subtle touch of the analog stick. It's not even worth it, especially as stealth does nothing for you in this game.
Love the demo. Pre ordered it for 9,99 Euros
Played the demo, and I'm pleased to see people are put off by the lack of dodge/block options. but i'll get back to that.
I was willing to forgive the cheesy, try-hard dialogue and generic cast of support characters. I mean, the cutscenes almost made me think I was playing a time crisis game… which is NOT a compliment.
But I was willing to forgive that if the gameplay was good.
And it's not. At least, not in it's current state. There had better be some godly move upgrades for Raiden to get throughout the game.
Because otherwise it's nothing special.
-no block or dodge or roll maneuver. Seriously, Raiden is a cyborg ninja... why can't I flip around to avoid enemy attacks? Saying the parry system "makes it more challenging" is a cop out... I felt fucking gimped. Also another problem with the lack of an EVASIVE action... means that gameplay now boils down to raiden approaching one enemy... then slash slash, parry, slash, blade mode.... then on to the next one. It forces the player to take on a single enemy at a time until it's dead.... cause... well, why would you just run away and fight another enemy when you're safest standing there and parrying?
That's BORING. And REPETITIVE.
Stealth is phoned in hard. I watched the trailer focusing on it... but with massive, open, undetailed environments... it really sorta makes it generic... i'd just wait out of the enemy's range of vision and then run up behind him and gut him... No real technique or detail... not even worth mentioning.
Oh and cyborg high heels...
Oh hai, Sunny!

Yeah, villains are the best, and I liked B&B too. Maybe they weren't as memorable as other villains but they still had some fun fights with.
This better be a good game.

I think they felt more like filler bosses storywise. I mean the cutscenes when they "die" is too freaking long and with Drebin telling us a post mortem story that is long as well.
Mgs1 gave us awesome fights and story that contributed to Snake's character arc (Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf, the ninja)
I don't think 4 needed a sequel. We should just let go of the series. I mean Kojima is a genius with imagination that can rival with Oda himself (which is almost a miracle). I think he can really come up with new stories and game concepts.
Sorry for double post
Spoiler alert easter eggs
! My "Solid" Snake is indeed rising
#!
I'm a little annoyed they never brought out any confirmation on Snake being dead in this. It's most likely that he is considering his health state at the end of 4 and that this game takes place 3 years after, but it still would have been nice to know even if sad. It's almost more sad that they don't address it.

Since they talk about him in the past tense, I guess he is dead. Kev said that he thought he was about to cry or something.
The only part that annoys me is that he should have said that he was the greatest soldier that ever live in body and more importantly in mind. Snake pretty much surpassed Big Boss himself.
Raiden talking about Snake's legendary modesty and humility was orgasmic.
I just love this game… Love it... it has some issues but it is so damn fun!
So…I don't care much for Metal Gear Solid. But I love Bayonetta and pretty much most things Plat have put out. Is it worth me getting this at all? (doubt it'll be until it's reduced. That ship sailed with an overpriced exclusive collector's edition and no Wii U version)

From what I've seen, yes. It's essentially Vanquish fucked Bayonetta and the baby was a sword.
How long is the playtime for this? 10 hours at least?
I haven't gotten it yet, but considering their track record and what my friends are telling me, like all platinum stuff, the playtime is however long you spend on its scoring system.
If you play on easy and aim to just beat the game it's like six or seven hours, but if you'e the target audience it's more like 30-40.
Sounds good enough. Thanks for answering.
I just finished watching a playthrough on Youtube, and while it's clear that the latter quarter of the game was somewhat rushed out the door that final boss is certainly from a Metal Gear game.
Whoever decided to have the vocals kick in on boss battles like that definitely deserves a raise. It certainly got me pumped and I wasn't even playing the game!
I love the lyrics kicking in during the final third of a boss battle as well, but I've actually seen people outright hate on the game for it. Saying the lyrics ruins the mood and takes them out of the game. As for play length, the average time I'm seeing at the end of playthroughs is 10 hours. But the kicker there is the timer does not count cutscenes or even retrying. So if you play for 5 minutes between checkpoints and die, those 5 minutes never happened as far as the counter is concerned. So it's a damn good length for an action game.

I don't know why they should be taken back by it. All the bosses had lyrics in their designated songs. Speaking of music…isn't this game's OST fricken kickass? Platinum really pulled no stops for quality music here.
I have only watched a few parts of the playthough and the game looks fun and energitic. However, am I the only one who thinks its atmosphere is rather empty, uninspired and boring.
I mean if you compare to Ground Zeroes atmosphere and style (great environments, super dark and rainy tone). To me, nothing beats the old and classical style (I love sneaking in cinematic style) of the MGS games and Snake is a lot more fun.

Agreed! The songs feel like they came out of season 1 Power Rangers, but I love that feeling as the boss fights ramp up just by adding lyrics.
The whole soundtrack is just awesome
DLC announced:
The first DLC will be called "Soul Snake Wooden Sword". A special wooden sword infused with the soul of Solid Snake, which when you swing it allows you to hear Snake's voice.
A street fighter style mission is also included, which sees you fighting with bare hands against a cyborg with side-scrolling game's fixed camera. You'll also be able to control a Dwarf Gekko to stun all the cyborg soldiers in the darkness long stage.
The second DLC is said to allow you to control Sam, while the Third DLC is LQ-84i. Although there are no further details on these at this time.
The VR Missions are PS3-exclusive only in North America. In Latin America and Europe, the DLC will be available for the Xbox 360 also.
The Solid Snake stuff sounds a bit cheesy lol
Any news on whether the Sam and LQ-84i DLC will be available for Xbox 360? I haven't really seen anything about that one way or another.
Who cares… The Sam one is auto buy
More games should experiment with contextual music. It's part of what made Nier's soundtrack one of the best of this generation, and it helped make Resonance of Fate's battles much more exciting.
Hi, i'm one of those people who doesn't like the music.
Watched a let's play.
It's not that it takes one out of the action… I just think it's bad music. Some of the tracks weren't bad, but the vocals didn't synch with me.
The idea of contextual music is great... have always loved seeing games do that.
I won't call myself a Metal Gear purist/elitist. MGS4 was the last of that for me. And if a game is fun, then more power to you. It's just that the series is known for having great music. So hearing Rising is just such a harsh contrast. True that the action is amped up... so obviously the ost needs to be faster and intense... I dunno, I suppose it's just easier to say it's a matter of preference and taste. I don't like the hardcore vocals.
And the story is.... wait... i'll stop.

Agreed there. The contrast in style is too much. I mean Zoe2 was action packed but it felt that it rally felt like a Kojima game in terms of music, story and atmosphere. Jeez Dmc3 was crazy in every way but it had a right balance. Rising is just too much for me and the QTE cutscenes were just plain stupid and I thought in 4 it was a bit too much. but this is overkill.
Ground Zeroes is the one that you should be looking foward (dat dark atmosphere and engaging storyline).
However, I did like the codec calls.
So long as Ground Zeroes avoids favoring story over the gameplay which was GOTP's biggest flaw to me we're golden.
I didn't mind the music because almost the entire game is a giant joke to me. So much of it absoloutely ridiculous and the final boss seals the deal when it makes itself aware of its own ridiculousness. It's practically Devil May Cry tier, although the way it just throws you into the game reminds me more of God Hand. I'm on my Revengeance playthrough now; Love the game. I wish it wasn't multiplat so it could have been better optimized. I'll probably get another 10 or so hours out of it if I decide to get 1st on all the VR Missions. I'm not the biggest Metal Gear fan (although I liked mgs3 and 4), but I seriously recommend this if you're at all a fan of DMC or Ninja Gaiden and what not.
Super necro, I just started this and I'm wondering why I didn't like this at all when it came out. Like I was aware of this game but somehow it didn't seem appealing to me. But man this game is basically asura's wrath, same level of insanity but more gamey I guess. It's hilarious.
It's from platinum, so of course it is a great game.^^
Comparing this game anyway to Asura's Wrath is a sin. Asura's Wrath is garbage.

Not a sin under my beliefs :P. I liked Asura's Wrath was super fun going through that weirdo game with friends and beer.
MGS:R entertains me pretty much in the same way. Either game's choice of having you mash buttons leaves me cold.
They're not the type of games that get me immersed and make me forget that I'm holding a controller, they're also not really establishing any flow for me while playing them. It's just super fun spectacle.
Button mashing? You better be using parrying and blade mode, son. Lol

Oh come on you serious? Do I really have to rephrase that "son"? Ok just for you either game's choice of having you operate buttons in a hectic manner and thus inciting forceful button presses leaves me cold. lol
I'm sorry but demanding timings of the player isn't a new concept that wows me. It's a fun implementation no doubt but special it ain't. At the end of the day parrying isn't that different from an optional quick time event ala what Ryse seemingly has.
It just doesn't give the same bad vibe as Ryse because appropriate visual cues and what I assume tighter timing requirement.
I didn't like MGR.
Fuck parrying .

You're comparing mindless QTEs to parrying, a twitch based mechanic requiring you to observe your enemies location and attack patterns? Okay.
I'm not sure why you're so hostile, all I did was say Asura's Wrath is crap and MGR is a solid video game with actual quality gameplay which is wasted if you're just running up to people and hitting the same button and not making use of its other great mechanics… especially when these other mechanics are what really make the game. I'm sorry, but if you're playing MGR and not regularly using parrying and blade-mode then you're playing the game wrong and it's no wonder that you dislike it.
