Tales of Series

Welp, X2 is out today, and my copy is on its way from Japan. Kind of dumb, considering I still haven't beat the first one, but…if I had a sense of shame about spending way too much money on this series it would have kicked in about 5 spin-off titles ago. BRING IT ON
(also, a neverending lol at Scamco's costume DLC. If you want a full set of Geass-themed costumes for your party it will cost you 4500 yen... over half the cost of the retail game)

It's okay you're not missing much. The first one was mediocre at best. And very little content.
-
Oh I have the first one, I just haven't beaten it. Partially because Graces was so much better that I was taking forever to get everything (still on my second playthrough with EXP multipliers so I can get those quick-boss trophies and max levels and so on) and I didn't want to split time between the two games.

tales of hearts r trailer
Since the last big game this year that's of any interest for me is farcry 3 and I'm not a big shooter fan to begin with (borrowing this from a friends who's getting it.) I'm trying to pin down which tales to get vesperia ps3 or graces f.
I'm tending to vesperia, maybe any insight on the pros and contras.(And yeah I'll probably get them both at some point but for now)
-
Vesperia. Cause it's better. In every way. Everyone will agree. Trust me.

I happen to own both PS3 Vesperia, and Graces F. I love both games, but here is the pros and cons as I see it.
…I'm just going to assume you did play Vesperia on the 360Vesperia: Pros: Adds 2 new characters (if you played the 360 version) that weren't available previously.
Old characters get some new moves, which gives plenty of new options
Some previously underdeveloped characters get the development they deservedCons: Not in my native language (...that one is a personal problem for me)
Story, in typical Tales fashion, is clicheGraces F: Pros: Has a new, fresh battle system
Is available in my native language (again...personal problems)Cons: Voice acting is spotty at times (at least it is in English) "Instant Balls" comes to mind.
Characters are about as cookie cutter as it gets. Not sure if that's going to help =(
I kinda feel bad and that I may not have done either of these games justice. I really do like both of them. I guess the best way to put it is that Vesperia is carried by a good battle system, really good characters, and a decent story. Where as Graces is carried by a great battle system, some funny moments with the characters, and a decent story. -
tI'm trying to pin down which tales to get vesperia ps3 or graces f.
I'm tending to vesperia, maybe any insight on the pros and contras.I was annoyed at first with Graces F's combat system, but eventually, it ended up being my preferred of the two games.
Vesperia has a far superior main character and plot. Know the rest of the crew is widely loved as well, but I think I ended up liking the support characters in Graces a bit more.
So, for me, it's a toss-up, but most would agree that Vesperia is the superior game.
-
Thanks! It'll probably arrive sometime before chrismas :getlost: well I guess it's okay considering I'm paying 40 € shippingfee free.
-
My vote will always be Graces. Suuuuch a good battle system and probably the deepest overall game in the series. Though I will admit that I undervalue character/story because the Tales series has never impressed me with either so I tend to completely ignore that part of the equation.

some new stuff about the vita reimagining of hearts

Decided to finally get my Graces Platinum tonight. Been working for a couple of hours, almost there. Getting the last Inn request done was the best feeling ever…all I have left is maxing my eleth mixer. 9234 eleth right now, only a couple of hundred left then I can glitch my way to the top :3
Yay! My first platinum! :)

Glitch? Using the +500 eleth Grade bonus to top off the mixer is not a glitch.
-
Yeah I guess it was a poor choice of words, but lots of walkthroughs refer to it as a "glitch". It does however actually glitch you out of a trophy if you use it with OVER 9500 eleth, which I made sure not to do!
Btw I got the platinum :) I literally grinded with Hubert on Lhant Hill for over 2 hours straight during the last 1000 eleth. I just kept using flare shot xD It was the only way I could do it efficiently, since I had on x10 damage for the game, meaning I can never get anything above 20 for a hit combo, which means I can't use the miso cod or any other dishes like that :/
Oh well, it's all done now. Can't wait for Xillia!

Cooking is all that really matters for grinding eleth so as long as you were making one of the best dishes then it's actually ideal to end battles as fast as possible. It's definitely not a glitch though. And you can get the trophy if you have 9500 or more eleth. I did. The glitch only happens if you have EXACTLY 9499.
Anyway Xillia is a very disappointing game.
-
Oh no :( I was excited to play as a female protagonist for once. Most likely I will enjoy it, unless it has as many political plot points as Abyss…I tried playing Abyss twice, and STILL have no clue what the hell was going on.
And yeah I stuck with Miso Stew for most of the game. By the time I was done the last Inn Request (My god I hated those) I only had a bit more to go. I guess the short 2-10 second battles did benefit me in the end.
-
Well I hope you enjoy it. Once the grandeur wore off for me, it was a soulless game with nothing to do in it D:
-
And a month later it finally arrived! Let's close this year off with some tales!
Edit: 1 hour in and I'm spotting the first translation mistake in the script. Also it seems they didn't try to keep some of the lingual flavour in. Too bad that localisation like ni no kuni can't be the norm or at least translation on the level of persona.
Also yuri is great!
-
Damn it, I'm fighting that wolf boss on the way to nor right now. That beast is pretty broken…
-
What translation mistake did you notice? I've only played the Japanese version.
-
The scene when estelle changes clothes at the beginning.
http://apps.lushu.org/vesperia/story#p=30-100
the part where yuri comments about how it fits her. I could be wrong but I think it's not meant to be negated would be a weird comment to make.
[……いや、
似合ってねえなと思って][…It's nothing, I was just thinking
this doesn't suit you either.] -
Seems accurate to me. 似合ってねえ is just 似合っていない so it is negative. And it fits with the convo. What seems weird about it?
-

ah ok my bad :/ just seemed weird at the time when they both have just met for him to make such a comment. Also the way estelle responded didn't fit for me(the answer was spoken in a rather aloof manner) and since I think I've heard the "nee" thing a few times as an ending for questions that ask for confirmation(dunno how what's the term for it, I mean something akin to putting "isn't it" at the end/ probably totally bad/wrong example yeah sometimes I should look at grammar terminology…) I thought it was rather a case of that.
But given that I know a little bit more about these characters I guess estelles reaction fits after all.
Thanks for clearing it up!

As more video and stuff trickles out about the Hearts Vita remake I am getting just a little bummed about it. The game was really really great and I doubt that any additions they make will somehow destroy the quality of that core but…there was absolutely a very tangible charm about the sprite-based graphics on the DS and even the flat battleground that will be lost with a more modern and typical contemporary Tales style. I'll still buy it, but...something tells me that unlike most of the other remakes/expanded ports I will have fonder memories of the original.

demo for hearts r will be out on http://www.siliconera.com/2012/12/16/tales-of-hearts-r-demo-coming-to-psn-on-christmas-day/
-
So I got just done with nordpolika and have access to my ship again, I have to say as much as I recognize that tales can be really tropey I kind of don't mind(also in addition as of now vesperia seems to be rather low on that). Really skits are super fun and all the characters are really likable, but what makes the game for me is yuri's chemistry with everyone it's just really great especially compared to how horrible cast chemistry between luke and the others (in abyss) was. More than any single character I just enjoy the relationship between everyone and yuri, especially karol/yuri and estelle/yuri. It's just really nice to see the typical jrpg plot of coming of age hero sidelined a little and see it from a distance.
I'm also very pleased that the game didn't turn into moral bsing yet and just clearly goes through with the evil people should die stuff.
As for the combat system I'm a bit bumped about how sluggish it feels to the little bit I played of graces but I guess graces isn't just a sequel for nothing. I hope those flashsteps of graces never leave the franchise, they bring quite the dynamic feel into combat.
And cooking has to be the worst mechanic ever… :D it really destroys me... my compulsion doesn't let me advance until everyone has at least 3 stars with yuri mastering everything... (I'm glad that I could let repede skip the ordeal)
Also patty is weird, the nonesense she talks sometimes that made me waste a good time googling it if there is actually any meaning behind it xD...
Edit: This game is too fucking long! Been seriously chugging at it during the holydays and I just reached access to the last story related dungeon and still have a ton of side quest to do.
Edit2: Patty's critical form is pretty broken on a first playthrough... constant ovl 1
Edit3: Just finished it damn... not sure if I'm up for the platinum... I think I had about 100 something hours of actual playtime the clock is on 144 hours but I left the ps3 on for 2 days for auto grade/fell arms grinding.
Mmh next on the list graces not sure when though...
Edit4: Anyone here that actually got the vesperia platinum? I'm so close.... recently got both compendium trophies. Still needing the low level challenger, speedrun, bunny, all savepoints, 50k km and all titles trophy though. Bunny and 50k are things that can be easily done by just leaving the thing on but damn all save points and the speedrun ist propably going to make me burn out quite a bit.
Telescopic graveyard is a horribly boring dungeon...
Working on all titles right now I'm mainly missing the cooking ones and am grinding recipes now still have to unlock a few per cooking yuri has all unlocked ones on master.
-
Just go the platinum! Last trophies missing were 50k km and the bunny guild one. Just put a rubberband on my controller and got them a few hours ago on automode.
Man this thread feels lonely… xD

I don't think editing your post bumps the topic. I didn't notice any of your edits.
Anyway I have a platinum too, I did it in about 95 total hours across all runs. I really like the fact that a platinum here means 100%. There is absolutely nothing left to do after that. I think ToV is definitely one of the best Tales games out there, at least of the ones I've played.

my clock is at 228 hours now, the game is insanely long even if I substract the time I spend automode farming for grade and fel arm kills.
I was really stubborn about staying on normal mode and 200 man with estelle and patty(ok patty I admit I haven't figured out playing, for example that attack where she summons the cards where you have to call higher or lower I always mispress) can be quite the pain, they just don't do enough damage…But yeah it's actually a super satisfying platinum, I especially liked completing both books, although the collector one drove me a bit nuts with it having the pre requirement of having all bunny attachments which in turn has the requirement of having almost all titles which in turn has the requirement of having a character having almost all recipes on master.
I've also been contemplating a lot about why tales characters are so likable despite being sometimes really flat, given this was a bit harder here since vesperia has arguably from what I've heard some of the characters with the most depth and if a comparison to abyss is any indication I tend to agree (Seriously raven and yuri are actually really interesting). Well the answer I came up is that the tales studio writing staff while being not so great in some departments like plot or pacing, where they always seem to shine is humor and it shows how much sympathy that can conjure.
-
I dunno, some Tales characters drive me crazy. Vesperia is the only one with a real solid cast in my opinion. Though they do know how to pull off good skits regardless of characters (the ones in Graces were really good too).
-
True I was rather speaking in general, but I agree. I think luke from abyss is the one that I can't stand. I bit to much whinery and jackassery before his redemption kicked in.
Ordered graces (jp) want to keep it rolling, I feel that tales are comfortably challenging at my level of japanese.
I still miss enough so that I learn quite a bit by playing but not enough stuff that I get frustrated and lost.Don't know though how enthusiastic I'll be when I get it I just wanted something to fill the wait over until bioshock infinite.

Got big into the Tales mode recently. First tales was Symphonia and then Dawn or new World. Loved them both, but Dawn felt like it was incomplete, like only half a game. Also as much as I loved the animals as a team member I hated it. I am big on 100% completion and practically makes it impossible when you can level up like any creature you want.
Have seen the Abyss anime and been playing 3DS abyss recently. So far so good, Luke is a whiny bitch though and way to mean to that little blue guy.
Had been waiting for forever for Vesperia to come to PS3 and thus had forgotten about it, and since seems wont' ever I got it for 360 and been playing that as well. So far so great. I don't get the huge love for Yuri. He's too "cool" for my tastes. I mean when someone is talking to him he will not look at them, he will casually comemnt back, ect. Personally he feels like a non-emo Sasuke. Maybe he gets better, but at moment he is least liked character in my group.
Also picked up Graces F. Haven't gotten around to playing it yet, but while I was waiting for it to come in the Mail I watched a gameplay video through the childhood. The main character in that game is someone I like better than Yuri. So far the story seems interesting as well.
Isn't Xilia coming out in like March now too? Gotta do a lot of talesing in teh coming months is seems like. Tales games are by far my favorite JRPG
It's great that Vesperia and Graces have full voice acted skits also. I love how Graces shows not just a head but a full body in the skits. Sadly looking quickly at Xilia after noticing this I saw that it is not the same for that game. It went back to faces in boxes.

Well I can't really speak as to how yuri is perceived in the translations since at most I've read lines but never heard the delivery.
But from my impression of playing the jp version he is just a laid back very likable dude, that very much encourages people to not shy away from making decision for themselves. So for me it didn't really feel like he is too cool for the world at all, also not getting the sasuke vibe at all since he is pretty social, shows emotions and is actually quite funny at times.
He also has great character dynamic with pretty much everyone but my most favourite is probably the karol-yuri brother like dynamic, which doesn't really sound all too special, but it had a great balance of amicable teasing, appropriate support and scolding as well as the well earned prideful acknowledgement towards the end.His main character arc also doesn't involve growing up and all the annoyances that come with that. His main conflict is very much tied into his living circumstances and of how he isn't quite sure how he should change them. So teen angst which I don't really find to be very appealing as focal plot point is kept to a minimum being relegated to the other maincast.
As for xillia that is confirmed to come to the west dunno when though, I heard the game has a lot of problems ranging from length to story and especially probably one of the most important of any tales game the gameplay.
Xillia 2 seems to fix a lot of that and while the game doesn't appeal to me since it seems to get kind of muddled and inconsistent like FF13-2 did, it does seem to do a lot of interesting things like being able to have 2 answer choices during skits.
A more silent protagonist and relationship focused missions. -
Well what I'm talking about is very early, since not too far. Only just got Karol on my team.
But like the beginning when he is escaping the castle and Zagi comes in the room to attack. I mean Zagi is like yelling about wantin to kill him and so on and Yuri just stands there looking the opposite way not even seeming to care. So far at the point I am in the story Yuri has this very cocky aloof attitude that is un-appealing personally. There have been other times too where he just seems to be very disprespectful in the aspect of not showing people eye contact.
So far I like him about as much as I like Luke, which is not the greatest. But everyone beats Dawn of New Worlds hero. Talk about an annoying little wuss.
I heard Xillia got the best review of any Tales game to date, in what is that Japanese review thing where 3 people review and its out of 40?
-
^ Well like I said even then I didn't get that impression, for me that scene in particular doesn't really relate to coolness. He is simply composed and (small background spoiler about yuri)
! given that he was and ex-knight it's not hard to believe. And I don't know seeking eye contact with an armed lunatic barging into the quarters of your friend seems like the more weird reaction.
As for xillia you're probably talking about famitsu which has anything but a reputation based on reliability, it has the same score as FF13 I think so take that for what you will.
My info comes from certain youtube channels that are owned by what seems like pretty tales buff people.
One of the main criticism of xillia is that the party isn't balanced very well so you'll end up using the same people and the same combo throughout the whole game since everyone else is so weak compared to that.
I also often hear the game is too short.I'm sure others here are even more informed since we seem to have some really tales buff people ourselves on these boards.

One of the main criticism of xillia is that the party isn't balanced very well so you'll end up using the same people and the same combo throughout the whole game since everyone else is so weak compared to that.I watched the First Strike movie before playing the game, so I know he was a former knight. For like a month or something only. I did like him in the movie, guess was just turned off by that scene. I don't know, to me if you sitting down and facing away from a door and someone breaks the door down and starts yelling or anything. I just feel most people would just at the door being broken down at least turn and FACE the door to see what's up. The fact that he just sits there and doesn't move and listens just annoyed me.
I can understand if this was maybe the 3rd or more time we met Zagi and this type of occurance happened before. You know like a Team Rocket type of entrance. But this was a first time in a castle where you are hunted by guards and he just sits there all Aloof like and just felt like I was watching a movie with some broody kid in the back of the classroom staring out the window. Like I'm too cool to care whats going on around me.
Yea I usually don't care what Famitsu says cause as you said they give many bad games great scores like FF13. But they ahve rated Tales games before so I'm wondering why this one would rate higher than others. As for the unbalanced party, thats a shame cause its nice being able to choose your party how you want it. Sure I dno't change my party too much throughout the game, stick with those I like regardless of their skill level. usually some powerful attack mage, a healer, main guy, then whatever character I like story/personality/fighting style/ect.
-
I think this is an interesting case of how people can perceive actions very differently :) and I think we also have slightly different ideas of what constitutes someone coming off as to deliberately cool. Like very often in these cases I'm a bit intrigued :) by that.
I understand it a bit better now though, but like I said to me that whole thing was rather part of his laid backness. It's really hard for me to link that "too cool for everyone attitude to him", since he lacks that arrogance and showy side that would usually go with that kind attitude.
In many ways he's just an adult that has dealt with enough to not be fazed by that stuff, but then in many ways he's also still very kid like as you'll get to see later.Dunno I'll definitely be interested if you'll stay annoyed at him. I liked him from the beginning, seemed like a really pleasant person to be around.
Edit: It kind of reminds me of how people seemed to perceive different reaction of others right before an exam.
The people that would stress out immensely, the ones that would brush it off, the ones that had the confidence of being able to deal with it, it's funny when I think about it of how many different ways you could put judgement on that. -
Famitsu used to be notoriously harsh graders, but now they give out high scores to almost any game. So probably the difference is that some of the great older Tales games were released while it was still a legitimate critical source. It's not until more recently that they turned into a total joke.
-
Played a little bit of the tales of hearts r demo the other day, something is not clicking with me…
I probably have to get into it from the beginning... -
Tales of series something what I like to play all the time. I use the English text version because I can’t understand Japanese.
-
Played a little bit of the tales of hearts r demo the other day, something is not clicking with me…
I probably have to get into it from the beginning...I've always had problems with similar JRPG demos (ToG, Blue Dragon, etc). I think it's because removing the player's past investment to the characters prior to the point the demo shows off makes it really weird and off-putting. The only demo of that style I've really enjoyed was Bravely Default, because they designed and balanced it entirely to be unique from the full game, and gave you demo achievements that would carry over to the retail version. I wish devs would do that more often.
-
^ Agreed.
On a different note, I don't know why but I can't stand beryls voice at all.

Did sink some time into graces I just got sophie again (first adult chapter).
Tiger Festival was a great joke, and malik seems to be a cool bro.
One of these days I should do a drinking game with asbel for everytime he says protect… -
That reminds me, I preordered Hearts R and put DQ7 in the order too. Guess I'll see that sometime in mid-March.

Be sure if you got the time to post impressions since you may be the only one on this board that has played the ds version, I'd be interested in knowing how they both fare against each other in the pro and con department. On a sidenote, is graces making fun/paying homage(whatever interpretation you prefer :P) of/to final fantasy 13? Just got to the sidequest with fiery joe and his older brother has an afro with some yellow bird stuck in it, which heavily reminded me of sazh.

Considering Final Fantasy 13 came out after Tales of Graces, I doubt it. Maybe there is an earlier origin? Ni no Kuni also has a familiar with an afro and yellow bird in it (Wildwood).

Tales of Xillia - English Trailer;

Do we have a release date for this yet?

June 6th I believe.

Got sucked down the Graces-hole again. Got my 9999 trophy and beat Ramda in under a minute, then on Chaos difficulty (this is my NG2 with 10x exp). Now "all" I have to do is the secret dungeon, optional bosses and the epilogue boss in one minute… plus a couple more artes and completion titles if I still want them.
