As for the earliers of one piece like everyone i really started loving it around arlong park. Though the turning point had to be sanji's apperence. Man i couldnt live with the tremendous cliffhanger of him holding fullbody. I just had to go find more. And so i did. I found the msn scans. Though i really loved kuro too. He was so badass compared to krieg and buggy.
I love it when I'm right

If manga writing skill was only in how well you could draw, it would begin a cycle of social evolution in which the only mangaka that survive in their buisness are those that draw exactly what the world looks like. But then where is uniqueness? There is none - it's the same rehash over and over again. That's why I love Oda's art style, and always have. It's so unique, almost like an American cartoon. Whereas Naruto really looks like everything else, with the exact same art as, say, Yu-Gi-Oh or even Bleach (don't get me wrong, I kind of like Bleach, just not its artstyle).
Exactly.
I hate it when these guys go on about how bad they think the art is. I personally love the style. But they see it as a different kind of manga so they don't even bother. I asked them what makes the Naruto Style so great. And they said it's the traditional style. I told them that Naruto's style is just cookie cutter and like so many others out there, but they don't listen. I dare them to show me one drawing where a Naruto character shows more expression for a feeling than a One Piece character.
Really to me a manga doesn't revolve around art, but the story. If you took the constant fights out of Naruto what would you have? Nothing. What makes one piece great is that it can still be great without fights in every arc. It revolves around the story and characters. Do you have to have fights to show characters progression? Yes. But it would still work without having so many fights.
I really only liked two fights in Naruto, but with the exception of a few I liked every fight in one piece. In Naruto There are just to many and they all seem similar in some way or another. However in one piece, every character has a different fighting style, so the strawhats have to adapt to every situation, resulting in new attacks and better fights. In naruto the characters just seem to get stronger and use the same strategies over and over.

Cowmakaze: Wonderful.
As for Naruto fans slowly turning: Ahh it's a wonderful thing. I used to be way into converting people like back back in my AnimeX forum days. Since leaving, I've seen so many Naruto fans I used to chat with now turning to the OP fandom. Better late than never I suppose XD

I've got a good friend who also happens to be a biased Narutard. Man I want to haul off and slap him sometimes.
It's ironic- way back in mid-late 2003 I got my first Shonen Jump (my first manga, actually) and I was hooked. I liked all of the manga in it about equally, and none of them really stood out. Fast foreward a year later, and they're hitting the Baratie arc. I was absolutely in LOVE with One Piece. And depite the fact that (if I remember correctly) I'd seen the amazing Haku arc in Naruto and the comparatively (as in compared to the Arlong arc) bland Baratie, and almost equal chapters of each, guess which one I went online and bought the first 120 episodes of?

The day I read the chapter of Sanji's debut, was the day I flipped Naruto the finger.
-
What I don't get…why is it, that once people start to like one thing, they hate everything else? It's like you can like only one thing and must hate anything else...
I love One Piece, Naruto and Bleach, and although recent chapters in both Bleach and Naruto sucked...well, in my opinion, so did early Skypia chapters and almost every arc before Arlong. -
If you took the constant fights out of Naruto what would you have? Nothing.
100% percent correct. OP has proven that the case is that they don't need fights for a good story in Jaya. When Zoro and Luffy just walk away from Bellamy's overglorified gang of punks, a stronger emotion is conveyed in you than if Luffy had pounded Bellamy's face in, like using a chisel to make a statue as opposed to the jackhammer of Naruto.
And Strange_One, I feel your pain. I have a gang of 3 friends I hang out with every weekend, two of whom are big old Narutards and one who likes Naruto, Bleach, and OP, so can't really argue either way. The closest I can get to them liking OP is Zoro, who is an interesting character in his own right. His struggle with his past with the whole Kuina-Tashigi thing, his lack of sense of direction, all of it, make him intersting. But they don't care about that. It's always just "Oh he's cool 'cuz he's got three swords". Yeah, that's cool, I give. And unique. But that's not all there is to him. They also can't stand Usopp because "he's a pansy", one of them can't stand Chopper because "He's useless" and they both can't stand Nami because she's "a skinny bitch" (worst argument ever, I mgiht add). These things frustrate me to no end! I can't stand that they dump on Usopp, who is really the audience's biggest personal link to the Straw Hats, how they hate Chopper, a big old ball of cuteness and uniqueness, and how they can't stand Nami, who is really not only the straight man for many jokes, but a realistic, important character that keeps the rest of the Straw Hats in line.
Whew. Sorry to vent like that. It just burns me up.
Finally, paptschik, that is not the case at all. I like Bleach, it is interesting (if a bit of a Yuyu Hakusho clone at times), and I like Dragonball plenty as well. Keroro Gunsou, the Getbackers, Cromartie High School, these all appeal to me. My vendetta (I apologize for calling it this, but those mentioned above have matured it to this) is against Naruto and Naruto alone, partly because it gets to live in the lap of luxury in the US, with armies of children screaming "OMG! Ninjas!" and liking it just for that reason, when the true epic of our time, One Piece, gets trashed by Americans. I'm beginning to lose faith in American intelligence and culture, when we live in a day and age when explosions are all that catch peoples attention and companies like 4Kids must, to quote the incredibly funny Dub Piece, "replace our hooks with fucking suction cups or some shit".
EDIT: I apologize for hijacking this thread into a "let's raise an anti-Naruto army" thread. That was wrong, as that is not this thread's purpose. That can be discussed somewhere else. Back on topic, I wonder what kind of fans and how many will start migrating to this forum. I certainly hope the non-"omglolroflmaon00bj00gtzpwnz0rd" do. This forum has manaed to maintain a level of dignity unheard of anywhere else.

> If you took the constant fights out of Naruto what would you have? Nothing.
Not neccessarily. You'd also have a crapload of angst and melodrama. Add those to fights and it makes for a series that some fans eat up. Need proof? Check our who's been the most popular character (or at least more popular than Naruto) for the past few years in the annual ranking. Sasuke. He's angst, melodrama and fighty-guy all mixed into one. It's not my thing but I can totally understand people being into that. And sorry for the italics but I still can't post normal font when quoting, quotes.

This argument burns me up in so many ways it's astonishing. I can't stand anyone that says this, and it drives me absolutely bonkers. I don't even know where to start.
OK, I lied. I do know where to start. I'll get back to the uniqueness argument. It was Shigeru Miyamoto who said something along the lines of if everyone is striving to make the best graphics, eventually everything will look the same. Then he made Windwaker, which I didn't particularly like, but that is beside the point.
Another mangaka that acheived this goal with all this uniqueness was Akira Toriyama. However, Oda is in a different league, but Toriyama's influence on him is visibly huge. Oda is Akira Toriyama 2.0.
Crap, I went off on a completely unrelated tangent. So sorry. But back to the OP's art argument, I am probably not the best person to be giving his opinion on the matter, considering back when I started playing the games with a Japanese friend of mine I had no idea it was anime. Hell, if I did I would have shunned it, definitely - back then I was under the impression that that stuff was for little kids, like Power Rangers. It was the artstyle that saved OP for me, so I'm probably a little biased in my affection.
Exactly.

Sorry to quoting three large posts but I agree with what was said. I find it so annoying the way Narutards slag off One Piece for what I feel to be petty reasons. The funny thing is, I used to be a cliche Narutard who slagged off One Piece for the most petty things. When I actually bothered to read more than one page of it, I fell in love with the series and realised how little Naruto had without the flashy, DBZ style fights. Hence why I find it so annoying when they do so. I mean Naruto having more well developed characters than One Piece? Well I've read the nine graphic novels Viz have released for both series. All of the OP heroes have had a detailed background shown. Only about three or four Naruto characters have had the same and even then I only slightly remember Naruto's because the others were so lacking in depth. Heck, I once saw a person say he liked Naruto more than One Piece and the main reason for disliking OP was due to the "invincible characters". I don't mean to go into a major debate about it, but surely an "invincible character" would be someone who never looses and never takes damage in battle. Didn't Kuro cause Luffy to loose a large amount of blood, Kreig manage to get in some strong hits and throw him into the sea, Arlong beat the crap into him etc.? Does that really make Luffy an "invincible hero"?

I totally agree with you there.
Anyway in all honesty I don't know how to react to the idea of the Naruto fandom possibly coming over to the One Piece one. While on the one hand it would be nice to see One Piece get a slight boost in popularity over in the west, say it starting to get higher in sales charts, shops stocking more OP books etc., I do hate the "cliche Narutard" and dread to think what it would be like if they start coming to placed like AP.

A much better manga. If there is one reason why I consider some of the recent Naruto chapters (especially everything with those annoying Akatsuki) to be very boring, it's because of the fights…they suck. I love Naruto for every single chapter, without fighting.

That's fine! There is no problem with that. Sometimes stories just click, and we can't tell why, but there's just something about them that we love. I have no problem with you in this case, nor with people that agree with you. However, unfortunately, I think that you are in the minority. (Obviously you know much more than I do about the Naruto fanbase, being part of it, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) My only problem is with those that just like it because there are ninjas, explosions, blood, punching and the like.

Sasuke is just the coolest of all the characters. He's got the revenge/evil streak going. The ladies man going. The cool wire and fire jutsu…etc. What does Naruto have? Rasengen. What about Sakura? Sasuke-kun. What about the others? Seems they're no longer in the manga.
I used to love Naruto back in the days during the chunnin tournament but now it's just been filler after filler, delay after delay.

I apologize, but I don't much like Sasuke just from a character-creation standpoint. It just feels like he (along with several other characters in Naruto) are very cookie-cutter personalities. That's why I don't much like your stereotypical badass, the stereotypical ladies man, etc., because archetypes like these are just quick shortcuts to making a character. Perhaps I have not read enough, but it just seemed to me like Naruto was a complete Goku clone, Sakura was the same old shy girl with a crush on a guy she can never get, and Sasuke was the "don't-touch-me" badass who reeled in all the ladies without even trying.
Being cool does not make a good character. Usopp proves that instantly - we love him because he's funny and stronger than he gives him credit for, he doesn't go around saying "I'm the best and everyone worships me" all the time (well… except around Chopper ). I just don't understand it when people like the same old cookie-cutter badass every time. Even Sanji and Zoro, the ladies man and badass, pull it off differently. Zoro can be very clumsy at times, and isn't really the brightest bulb on occasion. And instead of wooing the ladies, the ladies woo Sanji. These little tweaks and mixups are just enough to make the old archetypes not work, so it's a breath of fresh air.

I was addicted from Kuro's fight… I liked it when Luffy was hypnotized and went crazy. From then on I was an avid One Piece fan.
As for naruto fans, is it a good thing for naruto fans to support One Piece? I think Naruto is a bit too popular for its own good without any real basis >_> runs from narutotards but heh thats my opinion

I remember I first picked up the first book (translated by viz mind you) at my local Walden Books…no idea what possesed me (I think it was because I saw Luffy the first time in some video game manuel in wonderswan). Interested by the character design, I read the book...wasn't too excited the first time. Then I saw the series in Japanese at the Kinokuniya and I was fascinated by the diverse characters that showed up in the future books. I believe Kuro sealed it for me...Kuro was very very neat.
