The original series is back isn't it, but I thought Disney had canceled Shippuden.

Ok, looked at number of facebook likes to approximate scanlation communtiy size. The largest I saw was manga stream with 458k likes. Now granted, not everyone likes this stuff on facebook and there are a ton of other manga sites. The next largest I saw was manga fox, with 419k likes. If we assume around 200-300 k of those likes are crossover, then we get around 750k likes. THe other manga sites I looked at (mangahere, mangapanda, and mangareader) had at best around 200k likes and those probably crossed over with at least one of the other two sites for the most part. So if we assume that only 1/3 of the community actually contributed to these likes, the scanlation community is still less than 2.5 million. WHich is incredibly insignificant to the grand scheme of things
-
are we really going to judge the fan base on the number of likes on FB?
-
Interesting enough and related to the discussion at hand, THIS ARTICLE says that Dragon Ball has sold "over 230million copies world wide", and that isn't even as much as One Piece has sold in Japan alone according to THIS ARTICLE(which also shows Dragon Ball's Japanese sales). So if these articles are accurate, it seems One Piece has already surpassed Dragon Ball, which is far more popular than Naruto.

What were you basing your judgements on before?

We're not using actuall numbers for this discussion, make up some random numbers that you pulled out of thin air and then we'll talk. lol.

I think it's pretty damn obvious that OP is number 1 in japan and didn't it surpass dragon ball in japan quite some time ago?
@GolD.:

the hole on ace's chest =D

As I said, it's obviously not the full number, but its the best I have and I even tripled the number based on numerous sites. Its an estimate, but I doubt its that far off. And once again, the anime/manga fandom is highly divided as it is. Even Naruto probably isn't actively read and enjoyed by more than half of the fandom, and that's probably being generous

the hole on ace's chest XD
He means that One Piece sales (and by extension popularity) in Japan have already surpassed Dragonball's sales (and popularity) across the whole world, and DB is still way more popular than Naruto. Thus One Piece>Dragonball>Naruto in terms of Worldwide popularity

so do you think that there are only 4-5million anime/manga fans world wide? what about fans who read scanlations in different languages like russian or chinese?

I think these numbers are based on japanese sales.

The way I see it, fans are fans no matter where they are from. Whether every fan lives on one island, or they are equally interspersed throughout the entire planet doesn't matter. So you can add Naruto's world wide fans together, and they still won't be more than One Piece's world wide fans even though Naruto fans may cover more regions.

Oh, of course those exist. But a large portion of those still get it through English sites. That's why sites like AP have people from many different language countries posting on it. I don't know how much french manga sites contribute granted, but unless they contribute a lot I can't see the number being that different

It's like two clubs in school fighting over which has more members.
Club 1: 3 members.
Club 2: 9 members.Student body: 3600 students

if you include japan, I agree. OP's numbers in Japan are crazy.
if we're talking about the rest of the world (outside japan) then DB and naruto are more popular and of course I don't mean that they beat OP in overall sales.

But why do you discount the sheer numbers of Japan just because they are located in one relatively small place? Like I said, people are people. Fans are fans no matter if they all live in the same place or are spread out evenly throughout the world. The total number of fans of One Piece, regardless of where they are from, surpass Naruto's.

I don't discount them at all, just making the rest of the world point.
OP's success is mainly national, I was simply talking about how it fares on the international scene.

Yes it's sucess is mainly national, but guess what: THE SAME HOLDS TRUE FOR PRETTY MUCH EVERY GODDAMN MANGA IN EXISTENCE. One Piece is still one of the most popular manga internationally as well anyways.
-
Using Facebook and English manga sites to determine a series' international popularity is horribly inaccurate.
-

agreed
I just brought up that site because he said naruto isn't even popular among scanlation site fans anymore.
-
Lmao the questions is which one is more popular in the world? And last time I checked, the word "world" means All of the living human inhabitants of earth, meaning thanks to One piece dominating well in Japan with more living human inhabitants reading it than Dragon ball and Naruto, so when you combine all the living human inhabitants of earth who reads Dragon ball, One piece and Naruto, One piece will still have more living human inhabitants of earth who reads it than the other mangas- thanks to it dominating like a King in one particular nation.
-
2-3 volumes of one piece = 1 whole year sale of other manga. damn!
-
if the foreign market isn't as big as you claim, then yeah, OP probably makes more money than naruto, but my point is popularity..not sales.
The Euro-Americas don't even make up 10% of market compaed to Japan in manga.
Your tone of voice is apparant in disbelief of this, but it's the fact.
It's sort of like American Football in the world scene is irrelevant since America itself carries most of its franchise popularity.it is world wide.
OP's success is mainly national, I was simply talking about how it fares on the international scene.
You keep excluding Japan from "the world".
As if there's Japan, and there's the rest of the world.
Have you ever actually looked up what the word "international" means? It doesn't mean "all the other countries except the origin state".
We're not an alien race, and and as far as Japanese medium goes, it's incomparably bigger in the native country. Duh.Since it looks like you're not getting what everyone else are saying, I'll break it down to you.
IN JAPAN: One Piece.
IN THE WORLD (which includes Japan): One Piece. <- Because Japan alone can make up all of the rest of the world as far as manga popularity goes. This is possible because manga is a NICHE MARKET in the entire rest of the world. Although from above posts I fear I may have to define you what a niche market is.Again.
Japan is part of Earth. The World. The International world. We didn't invade this planet from Mars or something.
-
I would hazard to guess that Naruto's fanbase is much larger in Japan than it is in any of its foreign markets. The fact that it is still trumped by One Piece, several times over, in the country where it is most popular, tells me that One Piece is a more popular manga.
-
if we're talking about the rest of the world (outside japan) then DB and naruto are more popular.
Really don't care about who have the biggest but just being a curious prick, on what solids facts do you based this statement ? (that's a real question)
-

An alien WOULD say something like that :ninja:

They always get number 1, Japan is awesome!

why are you so sensitive? I merely meant rest of the world when I said world wide (poor choice of words)
I get what everything else is saying, you guys are just forcing it on me to include japan when my point is simply how it does in other countries excluding japan, i.e how it is seen in foreign eyes.
you don't need to bring up this we're not alien crap, we're part of earth crap, I got nothing but love for japan. :D
edit: no need to further continue this discussion, it was just my opinion on how it's seen in foreign eyes, that's all, we got no foreign numbers to back up anything.
-
I gotta say that naruto and DBz are more famous than one piece not selling , is that satisfied i would heard about one piece if it werent by the internte while naruto and bleach are world wide.
-
you don't need to bring up this we're not alien crap, we're part of earth crap, I got nothing but love for japan. :D
It was a joke dude. A humor tinted with cynical sarcasm.
An alien WOULD say something like that :ninja:
Nonsense. Perfectly capable of earthly greetings. holds up a hand with fingers in shape of a V
-
Last two pages are hilarious.
that's all, we got no foreign numbers to back up anything.
No, we have the numbers. Just for example, two largest comic book markets after Japan, France and USA, respectively sell 200 000 and 10 000 copies of a single volume of Naruto.
It is your choice to ignore them.
-

it's all cool man, as long as no one got offended.

I don't have them, but 10k? wow…that's low.
200k is pretty damn impressive though.
like I said my point was just foreign popularity, not sales since I don't have them.
but let's drop this since it's getting boring.
OP >> all
-
Really don't care about who have the biggest but just being a curious prick, on what solids facts do you based this statement ? (that's a real question)
Well everyone I know knows Dragon ball most of them know Naruto. And if I don't take someone who is pationate with manga, he doesn't know OP. To put another way Dragon Ball and naruto are general culture while One Piece is more about manga's fan.
-
Yup, but that's just personal experience, not solids fatcs.

In that same respect then NBA 2K, Call of Duty, and Madden are general culture in video games while Tekken, Street Fighter, and Assassin's Creed are more about gaming fans.

i think OP falls in general too cause everybody and their grandma watches the anime and buys the merchandise
