Yeeeessssss. The one I want to win is wiiiinniiiiing!!!!!!!
AP Retro Game Party HD Remastered NG+ - February 2015 - Earthbound
-
-
So long as we get Mugen on playing the game, we are all winning.
-
I'm okay with this, since I'm going to be playing Grim Fandango again tomorrow, anyways, and am just finishing up my current TTYD playthrough.
I've also been going through Anodyne, which gets comparisons to Earthbound, so I may actually have some new things to say about it, haha.
-
Not Earthbound. I love it to death but just finished my second run two weeks ago.
On the other hand I started new files of Paper Mario, SMRPG, and Golden Sun relatively recently. I wouldn't mind Grim Fandango but doubt it's going to win. If I could have nominated something it probably would've been Resident Evil. Just got the ramaster and it's my first time playing through it.
I definitely want to play Suidoken II but it's not available on platforms I own. It sucks PS Classics aren't available on PS4.
-
I'm gonna vote Earthbound, because my progress has been severly halted since the summer. I just beat Frank and I'm kinda stuck. I want to get to Twoson and get Paula.
For me, it's the one cave before Fourside that had giant moles. Some serious grinding was required and I just didn't feel like committing the time. So a second run through could be fun!
-
@Mr.:

Once you get past the third strongest mole it's smooth sailing when fighting the rest of the moles, though.
-

Ah, good to know the whole cave isn't hard. To think if I had just a liiiittle more determination…
Darn, just thought of nominating Mother 3. Nomination for March, then?
Speaking of, Fangamer has restocked their super, super sexy handbook for Mother 3. I got mine a few days ago from funding their kickstarter months ago. Soooo happy~ -

-
Yeah, Mother 3 is something I'm really interested in playing.
-
After playing the second game, I intend to move onto the 3rd game eventually. Was actually thinking about streaming both, but I've since scrapped those plans.
Either way, playing them should be fun. Hope It wins so we can all play it together.
-
Speaking of Earthbound, someone on r/WiiU reminded me that Smash 4 contains a "Masterpiece" of Earthbound. All Masterpieces are relegated to five minutes, though, so you never get to any actual combat LOL
-

The plan is probably to hook people through the glorious soundtrack.
-
The plan is probably to hook people through the glorious soundtrack.
The best part is that the initial part of the game has only ambiance when you investigate the meteor. The best music for the first five minutes is the Name setting screen lol. Maybe the title screen.
-
I now regret voting for Earthbound over Goldensun/Mario RPG (in my defence Earthbound had a huge lead back then so I didn't expect anything to come close to it).
A tip for anyone who's starting again. You should be able to beat the arcade area at level 2-3, and the ant area at 5-6, maybe 4. Simply use PK heal the turn you're likely to die in and you'll heal back up even if your hp reaches 00 first in that turn. I didn't get much further (other commitments) so I'm not sure how long you can abuse it, but it certainly worked for me in those areas.
Also is the weird title a street fighter joke or something?
-
One idea that came to mind since we're doing Earthbound:
At the beginning of the game, you're asked to enter character names and a few other things. Once we start up the game, I think it would be neat for everyone playing to list what they put down.
-
When do we start? I went ahead and named the characters and stuff, but going to wait now till you guys are ready.
!
-
Kits starts a new thread for each one and this play begins with the new month.
Screencapping exactly that is a good idea, though, for those with the capabilities.
-
I was gonna stick with default names for the characters, but was gonna pick things I actually liked for favorite food and my "Rockin'" As Noq called it.
Should I not do that?
-
You can play how you want. It's your play and that's a part of the discussion. I just think it would be fun to share that bit, since it tells a little about your experience right off the bat and it's easy to relate.
-
Yeah, I'll boot up a new thread tonight or earlytomorrow. Hold on to
Elise'syour butts. -
Someone once told me it's funny to name Ness "Jesus" due to how some of the dialog comes out.
-
The sooner to better, since I am itching to start up this run, but want a place to record my incoherent ramblings as they come, before they dissolve into the hot gas that they fundamentally are.
-
Would this finally be the impetus for me to actually play Earthbound!?
…the world may never know...
-
I think I AM gonna entirely stream myself playing the game, so anytime I'm playing and people here wana watch, it'll be up (Twitch saves your streams too, so people can watch later if they like too)
-
And remember
Invest in Orange Kid
-
We can continue existing files, right? (man it's been a while since the last session)
Going off my memory, the menus, and my current restore point on the Wii U…...Ness is Ness, Paula is Paula, Jeff is Jeff, and Poo is Pu. I'm level 6, having just beaten Frank in Onett, and I like the Strawberry flavor menus.
....man, what did I put for the rest?
-
So, I will emulate this game. Galaxy is probably help me setting it all up cuz I'm a noob like this.
I was actually thinking about streaming for fun as it's my first time playing this game and besides googling it earlier have absolutely NO clue what it's about or what's going to happen. As I'm also nowhere near calling myself a "gamer" it might be stupidly hilarious and therefore kinda fun to watch (me being dumb). But as Rin already said she'd love to stream (I always want to write scream, why?) I'm not gonna butt in. My laptop would most likely not be able to handle it anyways. So yeah, I'm looking forward to the game!
-
If you want to stream, nothing wrong with it just because someone else is also doing it.
The more the merrier.
Especially if your playstyle is different. How good you are doesn't matter that much.
Just get a tech savvy friend to help you set it up. It shouldn't take much resources to stream a SNES game, any average laptop + decent internet should be able to do it.
-
Someone needs to do a stream of the huge pain in the ass of getting the 1/128 equipment
Not me, though, mainly because I'll be playing off my Wii U starting Souper Bowl Sunday
-
As creative as it gets.
Edit: Uhh… Is there a way to chance the text speed?
-
I was gonna stick with default names for the characters, but was gonna pick things I actually liked for favorite food and my "Rockin'" As Noq called it.
Should I not do that?Hold the phone … does this mean I finally converted someone to the awesomeness of PK Smash?
Also, just a brief note to everyone: I don't mind that people emulate this game, but if you have a Wii U PLEASE support the game with your purchase.
That is all.As for me, I'm still unsure I'll play it, leaning towards no. I finished my run last year august and was thinking of doing a second run of both Earthbound and Mother 3 at the year's mark. I think it's still too soon.
So I'll just sit back and enjoy streams and provide my commentary ^^ -
I just mean the game doesn't call it "Rockin'" it calls it "Coolest Thing" and you were the one who asked "What did you call your Rockin'?"
-

And that's where the problems start :ninja: haha.

Welp.
Galaxy and I tried to set my stream up but turns out my grafic card doesn't work with the streaming programm. Unless Galaxy finds another way (besides the ones he tried already), no stream for me.So I went ahead and named my charas. I don't even know what their real names are, so...
In honor of galaxy's efforts he's my main guy <3
:3 chrrr.
Now I can't resist and play a bit already~
-
Hmmm, so I was planning to make a new thread, but with this one all retitled and stuff, it doesn't make too much sense to do so. Why not just use this thread for the time being, then when March comes I will officially make a new thread for that game.
-
welp, I just died the first time after my fifth crow XD Should have eaten a cookie I guess~
-
aw man, just when I got to the underworld on my second run
eh, at least more people experience earthbound
Mother 3 fan translation after this? -

I like the cut of your jib, even if you do think I'm Poo.
–------------------------
First off, for anyone who has played the game before, there's this old (pre-Mother 3) and long (I mean loooooooong) Tim Rogers review of Earthboung that I read for the first time recently, that I think if pretty insightful and a good read for those who have beaten the game in the past. It's certainly gonna influence my perspective this time around. If you want to read it, you can download it [here](https://www.dropbox.com/s/837ojqh74pc13ok/Earthbound Super Review.pdf?dl=0) (it's long, so Purple turned it into a pdf to make reading through it a little easier).
So far, I only got to naming my cast of characters and I already have comments, haha. Setting the scene of my playthrough, my name entry stuff:
[hide][/hide]
My notes on this part of the game:
The absolute first thing you're greeted to when you start the game (after the logos) is static. Then the title card and accompanying music, both of which are really unlike any other part of the game. The first act of the game is to terrorize you with dissonant music and this image of a devastating alien invasion. Its the sort of introduction and framing that old American sci-fi/horror movies once got, which is the clear intention on it. The difference is that that is not a part of Earthbound's character at all. The game is playing with your expectations right out of the starting gate.
I really really love the track that plays when you name your characters, too, which helps dispel any lingering notions that you're playing a traditional game:
[hide]
I absolutely love that audio effect where it sounds like they distorted a sample of Sousa's Liberty Bell march (famously used as the theme for Monty Python's Flying Circus). The piece is really weird and complex for its purpose, but because it's so interesting, it makes the name entry more engaging, which I think was the point.
One thing I noticed that I'm not sure I did before: the dog gets one more character in his name than anyone else! Maybe it's because his name appears less in the game than anything else? Either way, that is one lucky dog.
Overall, I'm pretty amazed at just how overtly weird your introduction to the game is. Things get pretty surreal from here on out, but it's never quite as overt as it is up front.
-
Yay I get to help out at the beginning and then be lazy for the rest of the story
-
I'm gonna give this a try too. The only thing that I know about this game is Ness. Should be fun~
-
I'm chillin in Onett town atm and I'm sad purple(doggy) isn't with me.
Still figuring stuff out and falling for the noob things like buying a bat in the shop and getting a better one 5mins later. hmpf.
There's ONE thing thats really really really bugging me besides my emu crashin sometimes: I get missed hits 5times in a row??? COME ON! makes the battles so much more tedious.
Atm I'm still rly in Awe with the whole world and how colourful and cheerful everything seems.
Also dat Beatles joke!–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Almost forgot.
Oh, Purps.

I stopped playing in the blue cultist town (died and got transported all the way back to Ness' house because I didn't call his dad), so I'll probably resume playing again soon.
-
PFFT.
Should have switched Mugen's and Purple's characters, tho.
On my way to twoson. I've died way too many times so far.
-
I have been feeling like there have been a lot of fleas
-
I am so overleveled that Mr. Carpainter didn't get to hit me at all.

Made it through my first sanctuary yesterday:
! I can think of few playthroughs of this game in which I actually visited Lier X. Agerate's house upon his request. When I think about it, the beginning of the game is pretty cluttered and all the action takes place around town. By the time you can visit Lier's basement, you're already wrapped up in taking down the sharks, visiting your sanctuary and fighting the police. As a result, I completely forgot that the Mani Mani Statue originated in Onett. That statue plays a big role in the game, so it's amazing how missable of a moment its discovery is. I like how the statue's influence is present, but subtle.
! That's something that I'm really noticing in this playthrough of Earthbound: just how strangely subtle it can be. The game teaches you pretty quickly that weird is the status quo. Everyone has something weird to say or to show you or to do and so, like in reality, it becomes really easy to discount it all as irrelevant. But sometimes there is truth to what these people say, truth that's relevant in-game. At least one townsperson mentions seeing UFOs, but because he's just another NPC saying crazy things, it's easy to write off just like you know every other character would. And that's the brilliance with the Mani Mani Statue scene. It's not a scene, it's just another weird thing that a weird character does. The statue looks suspicious and you can tell that it has some significance, but what's easy to miss is the way that it's already manipulating Lier into being possessive. Maybe he's greedy, maybe that's a character trait. There's no way of knowing that this is what the statue does, but the signs are there, just beneath the obvious.
! When I reflect on the bombastic title card/music at the intro of the game, I think maybe that's what they were going for. The game puts you on guard right from the beginning, making you wait for something else loud and explosive to happen, while meanwhile all these small strange moments slip by without drawing attention. By the time you notice what's happening, you're already shooting lightning at the KKK or flying through the inside of your mind. In this section of the game alone, you were given a quest by an incredibly powerful, yet fragile fly, beat up a gang leader and his weaponized robot, listened to a melody resonating at the site of a giant footprint guarded by an ant and fought the entire police department to prove your strength. Meanwhile, where's the alien attack that the game promised you within seconds of booting it up? It's there, taking the shape of the greed that overtakes a man as he discovers a weird statue.
! Other random gameplay notes:
! -Itoi's frustrations with the video game medium are really clear in Onett. They take the form of a bunch of absurdist or fourth wall jokes littered through the starting area. My favorites have to be the fact that the police are well-known for roadblocks and the dog that gets possessed by the spirit of the game creator to explain shopping mechanics.
! -This is the first time I've played Earthbound that I didn't need to grind to beat Frank. With a combination of conservative healing and lucky critical hits, I took him out around level 5-6 on my first walk into the arcade.
! -On the other hand, because I was so relatively underleveled compared to where I normally am after I beat Frank, it took me three tries to beat the Titanic Ant.
! -Speaking of the ant, someone in town mentions seeing a giant ant around that place in passing. More evidence of the subtlety I was talking about.
! -I love how my names are working out:
! [hide][/hide]
! -Fuck the police -
Ehm guys, quick question…
That bee from the future just said that he isn't up for a foursome with 3 boys. Am I just tired, or am I playing a weird fan translation or so...?
-
I started playing today and enjoyed it so much I decided to recap it here. We'll see if that becomes a thing.
! Main guy Ianto's first order of business is to steal his sister's weapon. His second order of business is to accidentally drop it. Great work so far.
! I go outside to find lots of cops and an eerie atmosphere. Nothing much to do though so I go back home to sleep until a guy hammers at the door. My mother pours salt on my wound by telling me to take a weapon with me. Luckily, my dog accompanies me which is great because I can only deal 1 damage. So Hopper has to do all the heavy lifting. It still doesn't take long until a bird pecks me to death. Defending does nothing!
! Second try goes better. I have to eat my breadroll but I level up and gain a heal spell which makes my way to the meteorite that much safer. My dog abandons me which makes me panic a little because it feels like a boss fight is imminent. Good thing an insect from the future shows up to help against some henchman from the future. Easy fight.
! I bring the neighbour boy to my house and hear my mother say the following: "Pokey doesn't like pasta. TOO BAD!"
Also too bad about the abuse at home, Pokey. :/ Talking to these rich fellas, I am suddenly very aware of the fly buzzing around my head. And…it's dying. Hilariously slowly. Triumphant item getting sound!
! After a random photo session I wander south. There must be a weapon store nearby. Yep, I get a map with a store marked on it. I have to return the map by 2001. No problem at all!
So I get to buy some new equipment which makes me feel much better. I also waste a dollar calling my mom. She's not super excited about it. I accidentally order the Escargot Express, maybe I should not click buttons so fast. I tell the delivery boy that I don't have 18$ for him so no harm done. I'm really digging this whole "exchange $ for goods and services" mechanic though.
! Time to explore the city. Highlights include:
! News about a special girl who lives in another town. She uses magic. Intriguing.
Beating up some Sharks.
A dog possessed by a game designer.
Onett being famous for roadblocks.
! Eventually a guy reminds me of the treasure hunter who wanted to speak to me so I go back there. He lures me into his basement...but it all ends rather anti-climactically. And snakes just drop dead now which is neat.
! I return to town to beat up some Shark members. Then their leader hands my butt to me. Which concludes this session of "Huschel plays Earthbound".
! Quote of the Day: "A monster is guarding Giant Step. I wonder if he's stronger than my wife." -
I accidentally went to Threed before doing the 2nd Santuary.
Oh boy.
-
@Galaxy:
I accidentally went to Threed before doing the 2nd Santuary.
Oh boy.
Same here. On the upside, the 2nd Sanctuary will be easy!
-
Huschy, do those recaps every day! They're really entertaining to read!
So, after losing all my save process, I was already in Twoson, I redid it all. This time faster and without speaking to everyone cuz fuck them.
I have now Nami in my partey, woooho. Eh, I mean Paula of course. I just came back to Twoson.
I rly hate extreme religious stuff so Happy Happy wasn't a Happy place for me.Here's my journey in pictures:
!
Of course Nami has a cat on her house, krr krr :3
so much flattery~
! Happiest moment so far:
Death Counter: 11
Things that really, really pissed me off: NOT ENOUGH STORAGE, too much death. and of course losing my save data and therefore not making much progress today.
But overall this game really is fun to play and I'm glad I started it. All these little details, creepy conversations and awesome random jokes <3~
Other people can describe this shit better than I could :D
