Nice to see April playing a bigger part in the story as well (and trying to get the Turtles to try new things)
I really like how they've got Raph as "the tough guy" without the angstrage from the previous cartoon.

people still watchcin this. the end of the new episode had an interresting twitch. looks like this April is gonna be totally opposite of the 80's April.
Hey, speaking of April, I never read the comic. What is comic April like?
Mirage April, Archie April, Image April, Dreamwave April or IDW April?
Generally she's more of a real person, not a helpless damsel in distress like the 80's cartoon… and not a tv news reporter. (In the original she was a lab assistant to Baxter Stockman and did various odd jobs.) In most incarnations she ends up dating/marrying Casey Jones. Who while a crazy vigilante and angry, is a pretty laid back guy. They end up raising an adopted daughter together named Shadow. Never have kids of their own for... reasons that are so complicated and stupid it ruins everything if you hear it, so I'm not going to explain.
Archie April, which was based on the cartoon, still had a reporter job... but eventually grew her hair out, traveled the world, learned how to use a sword and kicked a little butt, dated a guy who could turn into a dragon, and picked up a lesbian sidekick from Japan.
have you ever been around boys. who cares if they got beat up before. right now, they're laughing at donnie. XD
what was the word he used for a female ninja? I forget.
Kunoichi. Just means female ninja. Its a term that shows up in period pieces all the time.
Says the guy that wrote Ninja High School for 10 years.

Damn…Now I'm really curious.
I wonder if Casey will show up in the new show, give Donny a run for his money a bit. >_< Just really hope they don't give Casey the emo cut studios are giving "the bad boys" lately if they do.
Question about the Monkey Brains episode.. Did they pronounce Kunoichi right? They said it "Kuno-Itch", but going by the spelling I always assumed it was "Kuno-Itchy".

According to April's Wikipedia:
In Volume 2 of the TMNT comics, April was attacked and injected by a huge robot controlled by Baxter Stockman's brain (apparently, Baxter having escaped capture, had placed his brain in the body of a robot and sought them out in order to get revenge on April). It wasn't revealed until Volume 4 that April was injected by nanobots that seemed to have caused sterility as well as nearly killing her from the inside. With the help of the Utroms, the turtles sent turtle versions of nanobots to stop Baxter's versions and saved April before they would reach her brainstem. Despite this, April remained sterile.
As for Casey, there's been confirmation he'll be in Season 2 and will be 18 years old:
I asked about Casey Jones on the series, and Nieli replied, “Casey Jones will show up in the second season,” noting he didn’t want to give too much away, but that, “We’ll take our time introducing him.” Casey will also be a high school student, but “Maybe a couple years older – he got held back.”
And Casey Jones isn't Casey Jones without long hair. I don't care if it's 2k3 toon style or IDW comic style long, it just can't be some short spiked-up…thing.

Thanks! That's er, really weird.
Oh they could still keep it long but add the emo bangs, but then he'd look like a Kingdom Hearts character lol.
lol I know your well informed on ninjas and turtles robby. I like it when you dump all these interesting tidbits for us. :)
and wholey freak! the pony episode is up in hours, but I'm STILL looking for a link for the turtles episode. ><
Oddly enough, Ponies made the same "replace face with 80's version" gag as Turtles did this week. Weird.
According to April's Wikipedia:
Oh thank god they retconned it. Nanobot explanation is way less dumb than what they did originally.
Yes. THAT is better than what they were doing.
Thanks! That's er, really weird.
Not nearly as bad as it was though. No, the thing I'm referring to was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse.
Question about the Monkey Brains episode.. Did they pronounce Kunoichi right? They said it "Kuno-Itch", but going by the spelling I always assumed it was "Kuno-Itchy".
It's Japanese. "I" generally isn't stressed in japanese pronunciation, and in most words its pronounced with sort of an "ea" sound. It's still there, still said if you listen closely… but it isn't stressed and its basically quiet.
The "i" sounds like "ea" in "each" and the "chee" is like "cheek."
When spoken quickly, the "ee" part is not or barely pronounced and the whole word sounds like "each."
Note that the pronuncation will change some depending on if the word is on its own or preceding another word… and that the same thing happens to "hachi" (eight) which will vary between "hach" and "Hatchee" depending on the words that follow it. And that "Ni" always sounds like "knee" and never like like "nigh"
Oddly enough, Ponies made the same "replace face with 80's version" gag as Turtles did this week. Weird.
Yeah I noticed that too lol.

Er can you point me in the direction of what it would be? I can't handle crypticness!
greg cripes is one of the best mikey's ever. he make him more alive than any other voice actor
Yeah I noticed that too lol.
Er can you point me in the direction of what it would be? I can't handle crypticness!
Yeah, I suppose it's unfair of me to mention it TWICE and then not explain.
Beware. This is incredibly stupid, and I'm relieved that they seem to have retconned it out. (I didn't follow volume 4 too closely, it did too much weird stuff.)
! There was an early issue of Tales of TMNT where Donatello went into basement of April's place and met a tennant named Kirby (obvious homage to comics legend Jack Kirby) who had found a magic crystal that he tied to a pencil, that allowed him to create drawings that came to life. It was an out there crazy story, and a nice one shot, and it ended with the crystal depleted and all the creatures gone and Kirby never heard of again. It was a cool one shot story. Was even adapted into a Target book I think, since I read it there before reading the comic. Very out there, but fine as a weird one-off.
! Jump ahead to some 20 real world years later… and it's revealed that... BEFORE Kirby had that crystal... April's father had the crystal.
! And drew her. (But using a pen, instead of a pencil.)
! And that she is actually a magic pen drawing come to life that aged and acted like a normal human but couldn't have kids because... she is a magic pen drawing.
! Yeah.
! Seriously.
! And they stuck with that origin for a long time.
Really. REALLY dumb.
It was at about that point that I stopped reading the series, after nearly 15 years.

I laughed out loud and my dad gave me a weird look.
reads as well ha ha. ya, that is funny. thanks for sharing
Damn… today episode was great.
! I really like the animation for the Turtles vs. Shredder fight at the end of the episode.
YTV DID A STUPID CRUNCH SPLIT SCREEN/MUTED IT DURING THE BIG FIGHT SCENE, WHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!? Q_Q
Have to make sure I'm home for the replay later tonight, because I need to see this thing.
As for what I did see:
! ~ I sense slightly older fans will try to get their hands on flash powder sometime soon to try out these smoke bombs.
! ~ Knew Bradford and Xever were gonna be mutated the minute I saw the dog and the fish/eel thing show up. But that's okay, because Fishface/Xever going 'help me' was so creepy.
! ~ So the Ooze wasn't meant to be a mutagen, but something else entirely? Interesting concept!
! ~ Don and April bickering, and the guys reactions to it.
! > "How does bait even talk, anyway?!""I know bait doesn't talk back."
"OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHH~!"
! ~ And, y'know. Just Donny and April in general. Darn it show, stop making me ship them!
! ~ Undecided on Mr. O'Neil's sudden moment of badassery being awesome or just odd.
! ~ Have I mentioned how much I love that they show the guys all beaten and bruised when they get their shells handed to them? BECAUSE I LOVE THAT SO MUCH.
ah ha ha ha ha. you might be in my boat tonight Mo. I usually have to wait till monday to get the episode online. D: I'll make sure to upload it when I find it.
hey! lookie lookie what I found! I guess I don't need to wait till tomorrow. Lucky me, and Mo.

WHOOHOO! skips to last 5 minutes
…Okay, that was awesome.
! Kevin Micheal Richardson is nailing The Shredder's voice, OMG.
! Raph and Mikey took some major punishment in that fight, with getting electrocuted and having a sign fall on them along with the Shredder beatdowns they received.
! Mike gets bonus points for throwing shuriken as he's rolling off the building and getting Shredder tangled up in the chain of his weapon (saving Raph in the process), even if only for a little while. Don, Raph and Leo all got some good hits on him too, but Mike was most impressive overall I think.
! …Wait. Don broke his staff on Shredder, but in the final moments his bo was in one piece again. WHOOPS, MISTAKE!
! I want HQ wallpapers of the Turtles vs Shredder 'comic panel' outline and the 'Turtles hiding in the alley shadows' outline. Please?
lol SILVERBOLT! I've been whining for weeks now about not having access to the episodes till monday buddy. where were ya with that information! ^^
Oh hey! The Turtles are gonna have a float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade on Thursday! I have that morning off, I might actually watch it now…
That is one pretty float!
Just got done watching the latest episode and it was epic. Loved the fight scenes at the end and my favorite part is how much development Donatello is getting. I get the feeling the staff favors him quite a lot.
Actually, I'm really liking the development all of the Turtles are getting. I felt like the last show Raphael got focused on a bit too much, this one still has his more aggressive personality but it's toned down (and even played for laughs) and works better with the others instead of against them.
So true. Although I think Leo may be getting the least amount of development. But it's still better than it had been in the past. Leo I couldn't stand. This is the first time I've kinda liked him. His obession with that show is great.
Those ninja smoke bombs give kind of a Nightcrawler effect!
Donnie and Leo have really been benefiting from this new show; its added depth to their characters that other toons haven't given them.
Donnie's been pretty much overlooked in all the TMNT shows; apart from the second movie and episodes like Same As It Never Was, he's always just been in the background as the quiet techie. In this version he's got a bit more attitude, getting exasperated by Mikey's energy and frustrated with Raph's sarcasm and 'punch first' attitude. He's smart and trying to find his own way to balance fighting with his brain and his fists. His crush on April is just an added scenario for him.
Leo, while not as overlooked as Don, has almost always been played as the straight man to his brothers. Most of the time he's in 'leader mode', rounding up the others. In the new toon though, he's only begun to grow into the leader role, and we have a reason why he takes this role so seriously later on (wanting to be as good as his hero). He's learning he can't be the same kind of leader the Captain is though; he has to find his own way. But he's not letting his duty stop him from having fun. He's still making corny jokes and laughing at his brothers, playing video games and roughhousing with Raph, and fanboying over his favorite TV show.
And we're only, what, 12 episodes into the new show?
love the fights so far and donny is mos def the man. kicking ass with the bo staff and having more to do than just machines. and greg is the Best mikey ever. .
Mikey: you need a tisue
April:no
Mikey:I'll get you a tissue (poof)
Mikey:Poof we're out of tissue
Now I hate when they use rap in openings since in every aspect it's meant to "relate to the current crowd/demographic". It's just dumb and rarely ever works. The TMNT opening is… passable. It's not bad, but it's not great either. It's like the 4Kids One Piece opening where its dumb at first but grows on you the more you hear it. From what I get out of it, it has a nice beat so I just tune out the lyrics and listen to the BGM.

damnit now I'm gonna have that OP song stuck in my head. "DREAMIN! DON'T GIVE IT UP ZOLO!" Ugh…
But yes...rap needs to not be in any opening unless it's Fresh Prince.
I think my favorite thing about the Captain "Kirk" is that he slaps someone in every episode.
cyclone, why have you not liked leo before? I'm really curious on your perspective, as leo has always been one of my favorites.
I just finished watching the first 9 episodes of the new series online, and I must say, I like what I saw. I'll specify more on why after I've gotten some sleep, though…
cyclone, why have you not liked leo before? I'm really curious on your perspective, as leo has always been one of my favorites.
I'm not a fan of leaders like how Leo typically was. No sense of humor. Stick to the rules. Automatically "the best." He just wasn't any fun. I never felt he had a rounded personality. I found Raphael and Donny to be more relateable as much as I could relate to mutant turtles that fight crime. They were just more amusing for me than Leo. It sucks cause I really liked his weapons lol.
actually, that really makes sense. I can see where your coming from. I still like Leo though. You are right though, it is refreshing to see him not perfect and have room to grow.
So, first off, I'm not as diehard a turtle fan as some of you guys (especially Robby), but I have watched most of the TV adaptations. I also enjoyed the movies when I was a kid, and even now, since I own copies of the first two and watched them about a year ago and managed to enjoy them. Yeah, stuff like Vanilla Ice and Shredder coming back were cheesy as hell, but the overall experience was still fun. The third movie I haven't watched in a long time, and the last CGI one I haven't watched since it came out in theaters, but both were good. As for the series, I remember watching the 80's one as a kid, the live action one and the '03 one, too. Not all of them complete, mind, given the sporadic scheduling back then, but still enough to make me a big fan.
Now on to the new show: I'm impressed, as I said earlier. Like most of you in this thread, I also scoffed at the notion of a CG-animated series, but not because I outright hate CG series or am a traditional animation purist (I enjoyed Penguins and Jimmy Neutron when I still had cable) but because the style didn't seem to fit the turtles. Still, I'm really liking the end result, especially how much the guys emote and some of the anime-like expressions tossed in.
My favorite turtle is and has always been Mikey, and this show's version is fantastic; a nice balance between playful and badass (kind of like Beast Boy) with a very likable voice. That said, the other turtle's portrayal is also amazing, from Raph keeping a pet turtle, to Donny crushing on April and Leo being a fanboy who emulates a pastiche of Captain Kirk, they're all very affable. Then there's Splinter, who, in my opinion, looks more dignified than any of his other animated iterations (that I can recall clearly); no longer is he a hunched over old man who is exceeded in height by his sons, but a towering, sage-like figure, complete with beard-stroking and a more authoritative voice. Regarding April, at first, I was apprehensive regarding her being a teenager and her appearance, but once I actually saw her in motion properly, I was sold. She's the right mix of cute and sassy, and Splinter offering to train her in the ways of a kunoichi—which, not that I'm by any means an expert in Japanese, they mispronounced—is the icing on the cake. Also, her dad looks like Ron Howard, which is funny to me.
Anyway, this is dragging on a bit, so I'll end it here. I look forward to more greatness from this show…
The CG allows for such a lovely fluidity in animation during the action scenes that I fear would not have been achieved on a 2d animated show's budget (for very long anyway).
So there's a rumor going around that Dante Basco will be the voice of Casey Jones in season 2, despite no one can seem to find a source for this theory outside of the TMNT Wiki site (which is hardly credible).
Personally? I hope it's 100% fake.
Don't get me wrong, I love Dante as a voice actor. He's awesome! He's just…not what I wanted for Casey in the new Nick'toon. I keep trying to imagine Prince Zuko or Jake Long screaming out "GOONGALA!" - which Casey better use in the cartoon, btw - and my brain basically grinds to a halt. Nope. Can't do it, man. Not unless Dante completely shifts his style around for him.
The only way it might be fun is if Dante!Casey and Don become bros, and Casey actually helps him to hook up with April. Because then all the old Zutara fans from Avatar will rage because they were denied again (April's VA also voiced Katara in Avatar)...and yes, I have actually seen the comment of 'Zutara will finally happen!' floating around.
And since we're talking about him, I'll share some Casey from the new IDW comic. Because I love this comic (and IDW!Casey) bunches, and don't get to talk about it much:
! First, a little flashback from the Casey Micro issue (around issue #13):
! And now, Raph's (and our) first meeting with him in #1 and #2
!
!
!
!
!
I forgot how weird they look without out masks on…It'll be interesting to see what they do with Casey. Since I imagine Donny will have jealously issues due to April. April's own attitude as a teen will be a wild card towards Casey at this point I guess. And hopefully they still maintain the Raph Casey friendship.
edit: I hadn't really thought about it before. But when they use the smoke bombs are they using 2 per bamf? Cause the smoke appears again when they pop in the new location.
The new episode was pretty fun.
! Glad to see April being useful. The turtles interactions were fun as always. They really have a nice dynamic. Leo questioning Mikey on where he keeps the balloons cracked me up. Not real issues other than I thought Dog Pound moved like he was wading through pudding. Never really felt like he was getting solid hits.
I was glad to see the turtles pair up a bit differently this ep. I was getting a little tired of Leo/Raph and Mike/Donny almost constantly.

I hear that; it was quite refreshing to see Mikey and Leo work together. Mikey stole this episode, though, thanks to his water balloon pranks (too bad he couldn't nail Splinter, too). As for April, she needs to train harder before putting herself at risk, because her kunoichi skills are those of a novice. Honestly, you don't stand six feet away from someone and expect them not to hear you talking on your cell phone, especially when the leader has a heightened sense of hearing.
I wonder if we'll see an incarnation of the classic van further down the line, or if Donny will just fine tune the go-karts; I could go either way, really…
Also, shouldn't this thread be moved to Western Animation, now that the series has properly started?

I'm guessing we will see the van later since we see it in the opening and it's typically a toy people enjoy having.
I was just wondering about that the other day why there's no separate thread for the current cartoon.
Oh, really? I only saw the opening during the first episode (now I skip it, because I don't care for the song), so I don't recall the van showing up…

They are like head banging in it for a bit.

I love Leo's headbob right before his manga-shot cuts in.
I was just wondering about that the other day why there's no separate thread for the current cartoon.
Cause of the comics. ANd toys.
And it started out as a thread about Nick buying the entire franchise and all its media.
Mostly its because it predates the western animation sub forum and I'm too lazy to move it for a second time.

Are we free to create a thread on our own for it in the sub forum then?
No, because that would be redundant and then they'd have to be merged.
